Today on Filmmaking Conversations, I speak to film producer Sarah Potter. When the Lotus Blooms: a story of acute survival is a powerful documentary project that has been left to Naperville resident Sarah Potter after her filmmaker husband, Scott, passed away unexpectedly in July 2020. A routine endoscopy had triggered severe pancreatitis for Scott, and after months of treatments and stays in the hospital, he died from complications associated with his condition. This project has become Sarah's salvation in a time that could have been very difficult. She had been initially hesitant to become a part of the project, yet when her husband's mentor reached out to her, she had an idea; the film was to focus on bringing awareness to Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM) and explore the parallels of finding purpose and personal loss.Through the support of her family, friends, and community, Sarah has been able to take this project and run with it - providing her with a new passion and helping to support her two children, aged 7 and 3. Scott's compassion and dedication to the children suffering from AFM has been the film's driving force, and Sarah is sure that her late husband would be proud of her mission.W: https://afmfilm.com/the-teamAlso, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: https://www.kweli.tv/programs/the-people-of-brixtonDamien Swaby Social Media Links:Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/filmmaker_damien_swaby/Twitterhttps://twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5EauthorWebsitehttp://filmmakingconversations.com/If you enjoy listening to Filmmaking Conversations with Damien Swaby, I would love a coffee. Christian churches are found on virtually every corner across the African world, from the continent to its expansive diaspora, and their role in the affairs of Africans have long been called into question. How did a foreign religious practice gain so much influence across Africa, and why are millions of Africans devoutly following the religion even at the expense of their own indigenous practices? How do the legacies of enslavement and colonization inform Christian thinking, and how do these legacies influence the neo-colonialism of the African world today? How do other religious or spiritual practices, like Islam or Voudou, fit into this historical arc?Actor, director, and producer Onuora Abuah helps us make sense of all this and much more in this conversation. "I'm a huge Black dude, I'm strapped... leave me alone so I can enjoy the people I love." -- Dante Powell One of the good things about yielding your life and sanity to the road/ comedians/ comedy for a couple of years is that it has allowed me to become a bigger fan, to become a better fan, to become a deeper fan. I met Dante a couple of years ago at the Bird City Comedy Festival and it gave me an opportunity to experience his art over a timeline as it has rapidly evolved. Put another way: this guy has gotten really good, really fast. I hate the phrase "good vibes only" with all of my being but be warned, there are truly despicable amount of good vibes in this episode. Dante Powell, where do we even start. Okay, he is a stand up comedian. Good start. He is based in Des Moines, Iowa but grew up in Bernice, Louisiana. His work has been featured on SiriusXM radio, NPR, and kweliTV. His comedy album “The Squirrels Get Fat” debuted at #1 on the iTunes/Amazon comedy charts. What else is there? Oh, he has been a regular at many of the comedy venues you frequent. Clubs, bars, theaters, he does them all! Thank you for reading this bio.
