A new exhibit called 'the bomb' has opened at the University of New Mexico's Zimmerman Library. The exhibit takes visitors through a series of images, archival footage and film clips documenting the unsettling history and uncertain future of the world's most dangerous machine: nuclear weapons. Paul Mazursky (1930-2014) was a major film director during the 1970s and 1980s. Among his films were Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, Harry & Tonto, An Unmarried Woman, Enemies: A Love Story, and Down and Out in Beverly Hills. He was also a character actor, appearing in several films, including his own. On June 8, 1999, he was interviewed by Richard Wolinsky and Richard A. Lupoff in the KPFA studios while on tour for his memoir, “Show Me The Magic.” His directorial career faded out in the 21st Century, but he still managed to work as an actor, appearing on both The Sopranos and Curb Your Enthusiasm. A Film Director's Tryst with the Cosmic Director Born and raised as a Christian, accepting someone as Divinity in human form other than Jesus, was something very difficult for Mr Gene Massey to digest when he saw Bhagawan's picture on the altar in a Sai Centre in Hollywood, California, more than 40 years ago. However, he felt very welcomed there and was drawn to His teachings, especially the way selfless service from the heart was being practised there. Soon he came to Prasanthi Nilayam and once he had Bhagawan's darshan and interacted with Him in the interview room, he knew he had found ‘The Father' whom Jesus always referred to. From that moment on, he decided to dedicate his life to furthering His mission and travelled extensively to document the beautiful selfless service initiatives of Sai devotees worldwide. In this Satsang, he shares how blessed he feels for those priceless opportunities that Bhagawan has given him over the years and how even now he feels His hand on his heart every single moment.

For director Rory Karpf, a core philosophy is that things are going to change- a lesson learned from years of documentary filmmaking. This flexibility proved invaluable when crafting his indie feature, Grace Point. Adapted from a larger, more ambitious script, Grace Point tells the story of a young man on his way to a remote drug rehab. His journey takes a dark and unexpected turn when he finds himself in a strange town being chased by the locals and his own personal demons. The genesis of Grace Point began with a documentary shoot in a very specific location. Rory and cinematographer Al Francesco were working on recreations in Laurinburg, North Carolina. Al suggested that Rory reimagine the script as a smaller, more intimate indie film, using the town's natural settings. They were able to find every location they needed in Laurinburg and the surrounding area. The rapid 19 day production schedule with 10-hour workdays required working around outdoor shoots and unpredictable Southern weather. With many locations donated, Rory and Al knew they couldn't waste time with reshoots or lose any days to the weather. They dedicated two weeks to detailed location and technical scouting, meticulously planning shots and coverage. Al found the time to be flexible and see compositions when they naturally occurred, like taking advantage of a beautiful foggy morning during the shoot. Rory and Al's background in documentary filmmaking proved to be a significant asset. "One thing I learned with documentaries are things are gonna change," Rory states. "With narrative scripted filmmaking, it could be the actor isn't getting the scene right for whatever reason. We're gonna try something a little bit different, and be open to that working." Al's documentary instincts led him to adopt a "keep the camera rolling" approach, even after "cut" was called, capturing authentic reactions. He also streamlined the process by lighting entire scenes and shooting multiple angles without resetting, and even capturing close-ups and inserts during rehearsals. The collaboration between Rory and Al began at NFL Films, where they honed their skills on sports documentaries featuring prominent figures like Peyton Manning (The Book of Manning) and Snoop Dogg (Coach Snoop). These “follow docs” often involved recreations, which served as mini-movies, providing valuable experience for their transition to narrative filmmaking. Their established network of crew members, producers, and access to affordable gear proved crucial. "It's not a negative for us to have a small crew and make the most of it- that's normally what we do," Al notes. For Rory, the most vital aspect of filmmaking is fostering a positive and enjoyable atmosphere. "Working with Al, he makes the stuff look great, but he also understands how it incorporates in the story," he says. This blend of technical expertise and storytelling acumen is what brought Grace Point to life, proving that even with limited resources, passion and ingenuity can create compelling cinema. Documentary film director Laura Gabbert has made critically acclaimed films that deploy humor and emotion to tell penetrating, character-driven stories about American culture and society. Among her documentaries, Food and Country, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in October 2024. Laura's film, Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles, explores chef Yotam Ottolenghi's collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She also directed City of Gold, which is about Pulitzer Prize winning food writer, Jonathan Gold. A little over three years ago I interviewed Andre Borell, director of Envoy: Shark Cull, a hard-hitting documentary highlighting the archaic shark mitigation systems employed by the Australian government throughout Queensland and New South Wales. Nominated for two Academy Awards and for the National Book Award, Sayles is here to announce his latest novel “To Save The Man”.  He will be appearing at the Gallery Bookstore in Mendocino Village on January 22nd.  Sayles has published 8 novels and a short story collection. “To Save The Man” tells the dual story of the Carlisle Indian School and the Massacre at Wounded Knee.  It juxtaposes the life of Indigenous children who are forced to give up their heritage and the struggles of the Native American tribes who are forced onto reservations and allotments in what was known in the 1800s as The Territory.  Sayles talks about his inspiration for the novel, the hardships Native Americans faced, the prejudice and fear of the white population, and the impact on children.  In his novel, he details the lead-up to the massacre and takes the reader through the moments when the US Army gunned down hundreds of innocent Lakota Sioux.  The story is told through the eyes of Carlisle Indian School students.  According to Sayles, Carlisle was the blueprint for the Indian Boarding Schools that sprung up across the US and Canada causing immeasurable hardship to native populations.

Sam Lewis, who lives in privately rented accommodation in London and has Crohn's Disease and rheumatoid arthritis, shares her experience of asking numerous landlords to make their properties more accessible for her. This practice not only helps in completing drafts faster but also enhances the overall quality of the work. I've learned that when you commit to writing daily, you often exceed that goal, leading to more fulfilling and enjoyable writing sessions. It's a discipline that can transform your creative output. We also discuss the tools I use for screenwriting, like Celtx, which I find invaluable for organizing my thoughts and communicating effectively with my team. The right software can make a significant difference in how we present our stories and collaborate with others in the filmmaking process. Additionally, I touch on the importance of understanding language and linguistics, which can greatly aid in character development. By exploring how language works, we can create more authentic and relatable characters in our scripts. As we wrap up, I share my current interests in music and television, including my newfound appreciation for shows like Grey's Anatomy and The Penguin. These experiences remind me of the value of revisiting the past while also embracing new narratives. The question of when it is time to let go of a dream haunts most creatives at one time or another. Living out our sense of fidelity to a creative vision shifts and changes over time, just as the demands of life shift and change over time. But finding a way forward can be challenging, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Film producer Thomas Torrey has tackled this question in his recent musical drama Long December. Thomas Torrey is a writer/director/producer based in the Southeast. His production company, Bad Theology, has produced three feature films, including the 2017 ride-share thriller FARE, which the Los Angeles Times called “stunning” and Bloody Flicks named as one of the Ten Best Films of the Year; the 2020 mind-bender MINOR PREMISE, which Forbes called “one of the best sci-fi thrillers of the past decade”; and the newly released musical drama LONG DECEMBER, winner of the 2024 One In A Million Award at the Sun Valley Film Festival.
