Coles ‘Down Down' blockbuster not dead yet says brainchild Ted Horton after ACCC wins lawsuit over ‘deceptive' price spikes - but agency economics breaking, attention metrics ‘pseudo science', ad awards still warp industry

Host: Paul McIntyre, Editor-At-Large For the shopping public, Coles’ ‘Down Down’ has stuck like super glue for more than a decade – while loathed by adland’s elite. They’ll be mostly thrilled on what Horton – Down Down’s creator – figures is likely now in a rare and wide-ranging interview and podcast. Think rest and hibernation, not a Down Down burial. Horton ran four winning election campaigns for former Prime Minister John Howard and is characteristically frank on the effect the Down Down campaign had on him and his Big Red agency – it spawned a new shop BRX with co-founders Bridget Cleary and Marty Hungerford - to snap the straightjacket it created for him and Big Red. BRX is now being circled by potential suitors. Horton is the last old adman standing – at 74 he’s seen-off John Singleton and Mojo’s Mo and Jo. And while very uncool today, he remains adamant good jingles etch into consumer memory encoding faster than fancy, award- winning creative. It’s why he still warns on the warping dangers of advertising awards in the lead-up to the international Cannes gongfest in two weeks, proffering an ego-busting encounter with his then boss, Mojo’s Alan “Mo” Morris on why. "While you and all your mates are sitting around in a circle telling each other how good you are, your mum and dad are sitting at home singing my ads,” Horton’s recounts with a dense injection of Mo expletives. He’s never been the same since. But Horton casts wider than jingles and Down Down, to the “pseudo science” of attention metrics, “insecure” creatives and a pause-for-thought observation that the uncool craft of catalogue copywriting in the 80s and 90s has striking parallels to what works in social media today. It’s those craft skills, which BRX has captured, templated and automated, that is now partly why global holding companies and others are said to be circling. Here’s the thoughts - and confessions - of adland’s oldest creative.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Movie of the Year
1971 - Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song

Movie of the Year

Movie of the Year: 1971Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss SongThe Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song PodcastThe Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song podcast brings Ryan, Mike, and Greg to one of 1971's most radical and uncompromising films. Melvin Van Peebles wrote, directed, produced, scored, edited, and starred in this landmark independent work — entirely outside the Hollywood system. The result is a film unlike any other in the bracket. Above all, it challenges every assumption about who gets to make movies, and why. This week, the Taste Buds dig into three major threads: the film as a revolutionary political act, its polarizing form and style, and its complex treatment of sex and gender. Furthermore, they induct a film into the PopFilter Hall of Fame and take on Recast the Podcast. It is a wide-ranging, debate-heavy episode from first minute to last. The Movie of the Year 1971 bracket has produced bold conversations — and this one may be the boldest yet.About the FilmSweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song follows Sweetback (Van Peebles), a Black sex-show performer raised in a brothel. When police use him as a convenient patsy, he fights back — killing two racist cops and becoming a fugitive. He runs south toward the Mexican border. Along the way, the Black community shelters him. Bikers, revolutionaries, and sex workers cross his path. Consequently, the film becomes less a conventional chase narrative and more an odyssey of Black survival and defiance.Van Peebles privately funded the film after walking away from a studio deal at Columbia Pictures. He served as one-man auteur across every department. The film opened in just two theaters in March 1971 — Detroit and Atlanta. Nevertheless, it broke box office records on opening night and went on to gross over $15 million. The MPAA assigned it an X rating. Van Peebles turned that into the defiant tagline: "Rated X by an all-white jury." The Black Panther Party declared it required viewing for all members.Learn more at the Wikipedia entry for Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song and the IMDb listing. The Criterion Collection has released a definitive edition of the film — explore it at Criterion.com. The American Film Institute has also recognized the film's landmark status — read the AFI Movie Club entry here.A Movie Revolution: Van Peebles and the Politics of IndependenceVan Peebles did not simply make a film — he staged a full act of defiance. Studio backing, the ratings system, and traditional distribution were all refused outright. Moreover, he financed part of the production by borrowing $50,000 from Bill Cosby, keeping total creative control throughout. The result was a film the industry could not co-opt, contain, or dismiss. For listeners of any Melvin Van Peebles podcast or documentary, the story of how this film got made is as remarkable as the film itself. The release strategy was equally radical. Van Peebles released the soundtrack before the film — an unusual move at the time — to build word-of-mouth in Black communities without spending money on traditional advertising. The score featured a very young Earth, Wind & Fire. By contrast, Hollywood in 1971 was still releasing social-problem films that sought respectability over truth. Sweetback rejected that approach entirely. Notably, its commercial success proved that Black-led, Black-financed films could find a massive audience without white institutional gatekeepers.Ryan, Mike, and Greg debate what Van Peebles' revolution actually accomplished. Was it the birth of a genuinely new Black cinema? Or did it also open the door for the blaxploitation genre — a category Hollywood quickly co-opted and stripped of its radical politics? Additionally, the Taste Buds ask whether the DIY model Van Peebles pioneered holds lessons for independent filmmakers working today. As a blaxploitation film podcast discussion, this episode goes deeper than genre classification — it asks what political filmmaking actually costs.Form, Style, and Watchability: A Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song Podcast Deep DiveThe film's style is not subtle. Van Peebles employs jagged jump cuts, kaleidoscopic superimpositions, and psychedelic sound design throughout. These choices feel closer to Jean-Luc Godard than to anything playing at an American theater in 1971. However, they also produce a film that polarizes audiences to this day. The Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song podcast tackles this polarization head-on.Some viewers find the style exhilarating — a sustained howl of rage rendered in pure cinematic form. Others find the loose structure and repetitive sequences frustrating. The Taste Buds confront this tension directly. Furthermore, they ask whether "watchability" is even the right standard for a film that never set out to be comfortable or conventional. The soundtrack adds another dimension entirely. Van Peebles composed and performed the score himself, with Earth, Wind & Fire providing the instrumental backing. The music pulses through the film like a second heartbeat. Consequently, sound and image work together to create a sensory experience unlike any other 1971 film in the bracket. Ryan, Mike, and Greg weigh in on whether Van Peebles' formal choices ultimately serve the film's political goals — or occasionally work against them.Sex, Gender, and ControversySweetback's sexuality is central to the film's identity. His sexual power is his primary weapon and his means of survival. Van Peebles frames this as a form of liberation — a radical Black body asserting itself against a system designed to destroy it. However, the film's treatment of women and of queer characters draws sharp criticism from contemporary audiences.Women in the film exist largely in relation to Sweetback's desires. The film includes graphic sexual content, some of it deeply uncomfortable by any modern standard. Moreover, the film's portrayal of lesbian characters is explicitly homophobic. The Taste Buds wrestle with how to hold these contradictions honestly. A film can be genuinely revolutionary and genuinely problematic at the same time. In fact, Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song may be the most complex example of that tension in the entire 1971 bracket.Additionally, the film's opening sequence — depicting a child's sexual initiation — has unsettled audiences for over fifty years. Van Peebles cast his own son Mario in the role. That decision raises serious ethical questions that Ryan, Mike, and Greg do not avoid. Ultimately, the conversation around sex and gender in this film is not a comfortable one — and that discomfort is precisely what makes it essential. This is one of the most challenging discussions in the 1971 film podcast series to date.PopFilter Hall of FameEach season of Movie of the Year, the Taste Buds set aside the bracket to recognize films that define an era. The PopFilter Hall of Fame is not about winning a head-to-head matchup. It honors the films that changed cinema itself — the ones that opened doors, broke rules, and made everything that came after possible. The Hall of Fame carries special weight in this episode. Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song raises the question of what "greatness" means for films that operate outside mainstream critical frameworks. A film does not need to be comfortable, polished, or widely loved to be important. The Hall of Fame exists precisely to honor that distinction. This week, the hosts make their cases for a 1971 inductee. Tune in to hear which film earns the honor — and whether all three Taste Buds can agree on the pick.Recast the PodcastIn Recast the Podcast, Ryan, Mike, and Greg take on one of cinema's great thought experiments. They choose a film and rebuild the cast from scratch — drawing on actors from any era, any genre, any corner of film history. Each host makes their picks. Then the debate begins.Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song presents a unique challenge for Recast the Podcast. The film was defined by Van Peebles' decision to cast himself. Sweetback's blank-faced, nearly wordless presence was a deliberate choice — not a performance in the conventional sense, but a statement. Who could step into that role today? Who has the gravity, the physicality, and the political weight to carry the film's central conceit? The Taste Buds bring their full range of cinematic knowledge to the question. Listen in to hear their picks, the reasoning behind each choice, and where the three hosts inevitably disagree. Why Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song Still MattersSweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was never meant to be easy. Van Peebles built it as a provocation — a film that demanded a response. More than fifty years later, it still gets one. The film's influence runs through Spike Lee, John Singleton, Ava DuVernay, and virtually every Black filmmaker who followed. However, its importance is not only historical. The questions it raises about representation, power, and who controls the means of production are still urgent today.Furthermore, the film's DIY model anticipated the independent film movement by decades. Van Peebles proved that a filmmaker could retain complete creative control, bypass the studio system entirely, and still reach an enormous audience. That lesson has...

A cast that includes a returning Paul Walker, James Remar, Eva Mendes, a pre-Yellowstone Cole Hauser, Mark Boone Junior, Devon Aoki, Ludacris, and Tyrese Gibson starting out as somewhat of a Dom Toretto wannabe before finding his character as the movie goes on! The entry of the series with possibly the least sense of "family," you never realized you could miss Vin Diesel so much! In addition, Alex shares his spoiler-free thoughts on Crime 101, Psycho Killer, and the original Hunger Games quadrilogy! This week on End Credits we go back in time, figuratively and literally! In the review, we will go back to 2008 with two Canadian boys in the sure-to-be classic Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie, and we will take one last ride through Black Heritage Month by honouring a director who is no longer with us (although his films always will be).  This Wednesday, February 25, at 3 pm, Adam A. Donaldson and Peter Salmon will discuss: Black Heritage Month Special: The Movies of John Singleton. In 1991, John Singleton released his first film Boyz in the Hood, and he became the first Black person to get nominated for the Best Director Oscar and the youngest. It was the start of a promising career, one that was cut short when Singleton passed away at the age of 51 in 2019. This week, we wrap up Black Heritage Month by paying tribute to two of Singleton's movies, Poetic Justice and Shaft. REVIEW: Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie (2026). For years, Matt and Jay have done everything possible to get a show at Toronto's legendary Rivoli venue, except for the most obvious. In Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie they hatch their most daring scheme yet as the popular webseries makes the jump to the big screen with big ambitions, and the most faithful homage to Back the Future you've even seen, but can the director of BlackBerry make his cult favourite show (band?) a CanCon blockbuster for the ages? End Credits is on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca Wednesday at 3 pm.

Grab a seat and a cold drink and lets go back to 2005.—It's time for another session at the Hollywood Hangout. This week, we're heading to the snowy, gritty streets of Detroit to break down the 2005 cult classic, Four Brothers. The show kicks off with Boxman flying solo to set the stage before the rest of the crew brings the heat. Soon after, Smark and the legendary Cheezeman join the fray to round out a panel that's as tight-knit (and occasionally chaotic) as the Mercer brothers themselves. We're diving deep into John Singleton's high-octane tale of vigilante justice. Here's what's on the table:The Movie: We look at the pacing, the action, and whether that 2005 grit still holds up in 2026.The Cast: From Mark Wahlberg's intensity and Tyrese Gibson's charisma to André 3000's cool composure and Garrett Hedlund's breakout energy—we discuss who stole the show. The Message: Beyond the shootouts, what is this movie actually saying? We tackle the themes of chosen family, the weight of a mother's legacy, and the blurred lines between justice and revenge."They're not brothers by blood, but they're brothers by choice."Whether you're a long-time fan of the Mercer boys or you're seeing it for the first time, this episode is a deep dive into why this flick remains a staple of the genre.Check us out on:Every Thursday at 9:30 PM EasternYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@hollywoodhangoutpodcastSpotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1ymX0HRkWB45ja11B2I6fmApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/hollywood-hangout/id1132940251Castbox: https://castbox.fm/channel/4647345?country=usFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/HollywoodHangout/

BK's Blacklist is back, and this time TeaRon and BK revisit one of the most provocative and unsettling films in Black cinema history: John Singleton's Higher Learning.Released over 30 years ago, this controversial cult classic feels disturbingly more relevant today. Set on the fictional Columbus University campus, Higher Learning traps America's most volatile social issues inside a pressure cooker—where race, masculinity, identity, white supremacy, patriarchy, and violence collide with devastating consequences. The film features early performances from future Black Hollywood heavyweights and cultural icons including Omar Epps, Ice Cube, Tyra Banks, Regina King, Laurence Fishburne, Busta Rhymes, alongside Kristy Swanson and Jennifer Connelly. Each character represents a different path through college life, exposing how ideology, insecurity, and power can radicalize young minds.TeaRon and BK unpack Singleton's bold vision, debate whether the film still holds up, and confront the uncomfortable truth at its core: the more things change, the more they stay the same.Does Higher Learning still hit too close to home in today's America—or was it always meant to be a warning we ignored?––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––Follow Us:IG: @tearonworld / @bkwitda4fa4TT: @tearon__ / @bkgostupidFB: facebook.com/UbiquitousBlacksTHRD: @ubiquitousblacks––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––About UBIQUITOUS BLACKS Podcast:Ubiquitous Blacks is an internationally focused podcast that explores similarities and differences of the Black/African diaspora experiences around the world. This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to the gritty mid-2000s with "Four Brothers" (2005), John Singleton's revenge-fueled action drama.Mike Butler has a soft spot for this one; partly out of nostalgia for the early-00s wave of gritty, street-level action movies, and partly because "Four Brothers" still delivers a certain messy charm. The energy, the brother dynamics, and the rough-edged style all hit the way they're meant to.Mike Field, however, isn't buying it. He struggles with Mark Wahlberg's improvisational approach, finds the action too over-the-top to fully suspend disbelief, and thinks the movie's drama doesn't land strongly enough to justify the chaos. What the Mikes do agree on is the standout performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor, who elevates every scene he's in and gives the film a much-needed dose of grounded menace. So is "Four Brothers" a gritty throwback worth remembering, or a chaotic blend of tones that doesn't come together? The Mikes break it all down—brotherhood, bullets, and all.

First up, we're looking at 2000's Shaft (yep, same name), directed by John Singleton, and starring Hollywood's biggest badass M'Fer, Samuel L. Jackson. In this updated version, Jackson plays John Shaft, the nephew of Richard Roundtree's original John Shaft, this time an NYC detective working to bring the wealthy perpetrator of a heinous race-crime (Christian Bale) to justice. But standing in his way is a vindictive local gangster (Jeffrey Wright)...and a troubled behind-the-scenes production which frustrated many involved with making the movie. Is this Shaft as sexy and cool as the original? Was Samuel L. Jackson the right man to inherit the role? And can a supporting performance be both problematic and still arguably the best thing about the movie? We discuss all this, and more! “One thing I've found in the crime genre is that homicides are always interesting. When somebody's killed, whatever that case may be, it's usually compelling drama. So then it's up to you as the writer to surprise the audience and do things that they didn't think were coming. I've described it like this before: If you can hit the sweet spot of, ‘I didn't see that coming! I should have seen it coming, but I didn't see it coming,' That, to me, is the best writing. It's like, when you got to the end of The Sixth Sense, and you were like, ‘Oh my god, I should have seen that coming!' That was great writing,” says Derek Haas, creator and writer for the show Countdown on Prime.  You may know Derek Haas from the popular NBC procedural dramas like Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and Chicago PD. Now, he's got a new crime drama on Prime called Countdown that tells one twisty crime story over 13 episodes – all written by Haas. Set in Los Angeles, Countdown follows a secret task force who discover a sinister international plot that threatens millions of lives. The show stars Eric Dane, Jensen Ackles and Jessica Camacho as undercover agents all harboring dark secrets of their own.  On this episode of the podcast, we chat with Haas about starting his career as a crime novelist, writing movies like 2 Fast 2 Furious, 3:10 to Yuma and Wanted before making the switch to TV. Haas talks about working with director John Singleton, prolific TV producer Dick Wolf and writing characters that hook audiences. He also shares his advice for writing action sequences that both stun visually and surprise the audience.  “When I think about action sequences, I always go back to Raiders of the Lost Ark. My favorite action sequence of any movie ever is when Indiana Jones has to fight this gigantic Nazi guy, and – in any other movie – that would have been the only thing that's happening. But they put Marion in a plane where she gets trapped because the cover of the plane closes. Then the plane's propellers start spinning. The plane starts spinning, gas is leaking out of the plane, there's other people running by with machine guns. So it's not just, ‘Oh, here's a fight,' it's ‘Here's a fight, but there's eight other things happening at once.' I really try to do that in these chase sequences, because you have seen a million of them. What's the other factors I can bring to it? How can I show you something you haven't seen before? Sometimes it's character, and sometimes, it's the stunt itself,” says Haas.  To hear more screenwriting advice from Haas, listen to the podcast.

Get access to this entire episode as well as all of our premium episodes and bonus content by becoming a Hit Factory Patron for just $5/month.We went exceptionally long on the late John Singleton's undersung period western Rosewood, a film (and filmmaker) whose fingerprints are all over Ryan Coogler's recent box office sensation, Sinners. Rosewood tells the story of an independent Black township in Florida and the barbaric racial violence it faced in 1923, incited by a white woman's false accusation of assault and the Klan-assisted mob that followed. It's believed that over 100 Black citizens were murdered during the attacks, though the true number has never been properly counted.Despite the brutality, the legacy of Rosewood was forgotten—suppressed for nearly 60 years by both those who endured it and those who carried out the violence—until investigators uncovered the truth. That reckoning ultimately led to a 1994 vote in the Florida State Legislature to pay reparations to the survivors and their descendants. In Singleton's hands, the story of Rosewood becomes a rich, downtempo historical epic of properly grave tone; a film that never shies away from the violent realities of Black life in America's south in the early 20th century, the racial animus stoked by class anxieties and lingering slavery era resentments, and the complicity of white audiences and their ancestors in carrying out the violence that shaped our country's past and present. We discuss Singleton's inimitable capacity to juggle the rhythms of mainstream studio moviemaking with the formal radicalism of a Black story told with limited equivocation and compromise, as well as how blockbuster moviemaking primes us for absolution rather than honest reckoning. Then, we explore the rich character work within the film, how Singleton utlizies the embellishments of genre and archetype to root Blackness in a cinematic history linked conspicuously to white supremacy, and the refreshing stroke of having "no good white guys" in the movie. Finally, we relate the film to Coogler's latest, where it achieves a similar filmic mastery as well as where we feel it falls short of Singleton's vision.Read The Rosewood Massacre at Esquire MagazineWatch The 1983 Rosewood Massacre segment from 60 MinutesRead Robert Daniels on Sinners at Roger Ebert....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish.
