On Episode 76 of No Rain Date we're joined by Ellen Flynn, accomplished ghost storyteller, historian of creepy local places and dark side enchantress, for spooky tales about eight current or former Lehigh Valley eateries that are believed to be haunted. On Ellen's list are Bethlehem's Colonial era Sun Inn; the former King George Inn in South Whitehall Township; the former Magnolia's Vineyard in Orefield; the former Newburg Inn in Lower Nazareth Township; the Iron Mule along the Delaware River near Easton; Braveheart Highland Pub in Hellertown; The Widow's Tavern and Grille in Stockertown; and the Hanoverville Roadhouse in Bethlehem Township. Each establishment has at least one legend that is unique to it. For example, the ghost of a man named Marvin is rumored to haunt the Widow's Tavern and Grille, where he was once employed. According to Ellen's detailed research, Marvin was found hanging in the inn following a forbidden love affair with a female employee. But was it suicide...or murder?
Last Sunday, we spoke about the July 28 shooting death of 44-year-old Joseph “Joey” Santos in Allentown, PA, at the hands of a South Whitehall Township police officer. This past week, officer Jonathan R. Roselle was charged with voluntary manslaughter. We speak with Manuel Gamiz, crime and breaking news writer for Allentown's The Morning Call newspaper.
Our discussion about self-protection and the law continues in this episode, part 2 in a series of 3. Last week we set the stage, and now Judge Steinberg of Lehigh County, PA joins us. Self-defense is defined as the right to prevent suffering force or violence through the use of a sufficient level of counteracting force or violence. This definition seems pretty straightforward, however, very rarely is that the case when applied to actual situations. You'll learn exactly what constitutes a sufficient level of force or violence when defending oneself, and what would be considered force beyond that level. What if the victim provoked or instigated the attack? Is one required by law to retreat from a violent situation if possible? What happens when someone perceives a threat even if the threat doesn’t actually exist? And what if someone's perception of an attack is subjectively genuine, but objectively unjustified? As you'll hear, we recorded this interview several years ago, yet hadn't aired it yet. After all this time, we had it scheduled to be released this week. The timing is uncanny, as it happens to be very timely information that many people in and around South Whitehall Township (about an hour north of Philadelphia and where our podcast originates) will appreciate because of the recent police-involved fatal shooting on Hamilton Blvd near Dorney Park. By listening to this episode, you'll have a better understanding of why Lehigh County District Attorney Jim Martin has decided to charge the police officer with voluntary manslaughter. On July 28, 44-year-old Joey Santos was killed at Dorney Park in Allentown, PA, after multiple shots from the gun of a South Whitehall Township police officer. Several videos showing the incident were posted on social media, raising questions about how Santos was killed. We speak with Maegan Llerena Muñoz of [Make the Road Pennsylvania](https://www.facebook.com/Maketheroadpa/?ref=br_rs) about Santos' death and why her organization is raising awareness about it. You can read more about [the Santos shooting in The Morning Call](http://www.mcall.com/news/breaking/mc-nws-south-whitehall-fatal-police-shooting-commissioners-20180731-story.html).
We reveal CEE — Commit, Execute, and Evaluate. CEE is another principle Sensei Hoover has developed as a reminder how to go about handling anything that is valued. Obviously, defending one's life is of great importance and value — so is getting that job, improving that relationship, making more money, and getting healthier. These are just a few examples of things we value. Although just because we value something, that doesn't mean we have the tools necessary to see it through. Understanding and implementing CEE will help you achieve your goal(s). We also set the stage for the next 2 weeks when we will have the Honorable Robert L Steinberg on the show. Hear how the state of Pennsylvania looks at our right to self-protection. In the next 2 episodes Judge Steinberg will go into further detail on the castle doctrine, also known as the castle law, which in PA (and certain other states) provides protections and immunities in a person's home and vehicle permitting, in certain circumstances, the use of force (up to and including deadly force) to defend against an intruder. This episode and the next couple are very timely, especially with this past week's police-involved fatal shooting on Hamilton Blvd across the street from Dorney Park in South Whitehall Township. Our podcast, which is heard around the world, happens to originate in South Whitehall. This shooting is making headlines all over. In fact, because of it, #SouthWhitehall is currently trending on Twitter. Was the police officer acting within his right to defend himself? Or was the shooting unjustified and a case of police brutality? That is for the Lehigh County DA and investigators to determine officially. But after listening to this episode, and once you hear the facts involved, you'll have a better understanding of the ruling. Like what you hear?
