Join us for episode 495 of the Theme Park Trader Podcast! Guests DESTROY Beak and Barrel & BaseLine Tap House in this week's episode of Theme Park Trader! But first — is table service dining dying at Walt Disney World? With guests now dropping serious money on Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Premier Pass before they even step through the gates, more and more visitors are skipping sit-down restaurants altogether. So is Disney's answer to grab those lost guest dollars... bars and lounges? We dig into why spots like The Beak and Barrel and BaseLine Tap House might be exactly where Disney wants you spending instead — lower commitment than a two-hour ADR, no huge kitchen overhead, and premium-priced drinks with a themed backdrop. Then it's time for the main event: we read the most BRUTAL guest reviews of Magic Kingdom's pirate lounge The Beak and Barrel and Hollywood Studios' BaseLine Tap House. From "a tavern full of disappointment" to complaints about pricing, portions, queues and theming that didn't live up to the hype — nobody is safe. Do you agree with the reviews? Have you visited either lounge? Let us know in the comments!
WB Cedric Jacobson examines why early American Lodge met in taverns or public houses. Using artifacts and historical findings from Hiram Lodge No. 1, New Haven, CT, we'll discuss the role of taverns, how they were more than a bar for a drink but the center points of towns and the primary meeting point for Americans during the Revolution.Show notes and links: Join us on Patreon. This week, Thom Francis welcomes poet, translator, and essayist Pierre Joris. Pierre was the featured poet at the Poets Speak Loud series at The Lark Tavern on September 25, 2006. +++++ Born in Strasbourg, France, and raised in Luxembourg, Pierre Joris spent his life crossing borders—both physical and linguistic. His travels took him across Europe, North Africa, and the United States, experiences that shaped his "nomad poetics," a philosophy that embraced fluidity and rejected rigid boundaries. Over his lifetime, he published more than 50 books, including poetry, essays, anthologies, and translations. His work challenged conventions and opened doors to new literary landscapes. Joris became an integral part of Albany's literary world when he joined the University at Albany in 1992 as a professor of poetry and poetics, a role he held until 2013. There, he was a mentor who encouraged students to experiment, take risks, and find their voices. He brought that same energy to the wider literary community, participating in readings, workshops, and performances that enriched the cultural fabric of the region. Pierre was the featured poet at the Poets Speak Loud open mic series in downtown Albany in September 2006. Pierre Joris passed away on February 27, 2025. Pierre was not just a poet, a translator, or a teacher—he was a force of creativity who challenged the way we think about language and literature. As we say goodbye, we also celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind. His words, his vision, and his generosity will continue to inspire generations to come. To hear Pierre's entire poem with Mitch Elrod from Poets Speak Loud, go to https://soundcloud.com/hvwritersguild/pierre-joris-at-poets-speak-loud-september-25-2006
Tavern Ratters on the Velvet Couch: Decoding the Yorkshire TerrierHost Laura Reeves is joined by Yorkshire Terrier breed legends Gloria Lyon and Lorraine Hayes at the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America National Specialty as they share over 50 years each of hands-on experience, revealing the Yorkie's fierce rat-hunting history, practical grooming hacks and essential training and health tips. The Yorkshire Terrier's Rich History: Though loved today as glamorous lapdogs, Yorkies originated in the 1800s as brave, independent rat and mouse hunters in mines and taverns. That fierce terrier prey instinct and big dog attitude are still alive and well in the breed today.Grooming and Coat Realities: Yorkies grow human-like hair instead of fur, which means they do not shed. However, maintaining a full show coat requires intense wrapping in tissue paper. For companion homes, these experts strongly recommend a cute, low-maintenance pet trim ("cutting them down").Color and Size Unpredictability: Puppies are born black and tan and gradually lighten into their signature steel blue and gold by age two or three. Because genetics are complex, size can be highly unpredictable, and oversized puppies often appear even in carefully planned litters.Training a Feisty Companion: While Yorkies love to follow you everywhere, they are independent thinkers. Successful potty training requires absolute consistency. The experts also emphasize crate training as a safe haven and an essential tool to prevent "door dashing".Essential Health and Longevity: Yorkies live an average of 12 to 14 years. To protect their knees and tracheas, owners *must* keep them at a healthy weight. Toy dog dental hygiene is also critical. When looking for a puppy, verified health tests should focus on the parent club'sCHIC program(eyes and patellas), rather than general genetic kits like Embark, which do not screen for specific Yorkie health risks.
If you believe anything that I say, please believe these topics of discussion: stomping in through the dirt door, admiring all of our booty, coming to count and value belts, sliding down the pole, yearning for the home port, turning that bottle upside down, being a good-for-nothing husband, buying crystals from a crystal lady, seeking dad's back door, having night-water on standby, realizing Mom has no name, forcing the mystery woman to meet my dad, and "just testing" someone with the threat of death. There's nothing wrong with drinking with friends after a hard day's work. 00:00:00 Trade In Value 00:01:55 Intro 00:03:01 Pirate Isle Underground 00:14:26 Pirate Isle Underground - Second Level 00:17:43 Tavern 00:28:41 The Rest Of Pirate Isle Underground 00:33:44 Dyne's Office 00:43:31 Real Net 00:47:23 Outro Patreon: patreon.com/retroam Bluesky: @retrogradeamnesia.bsky.social YouTube: www.youtube.com/@RetrogradeAmnesia E-Mail: podcast@retrogradeamnesia.com Website: www.retrogradeamnesia.com

West Chester native Chris Nelms has been passionate about video games for as long as he can remember, and from an early age, he knew he wanted to create games of his own. After earning his degree from Millersville University, Chris began his career working on games for small studios. Along the way, he also built a career as a full-time streamer on Twitch. Drawing on those experiences, he eventually set out to create a game of his own: Monster Tavern. Monster Tavern is the winner of Best Deckbuilder from TooManyGames Indie Showcase in 2026.The game is a roguelite deckbuilder where drinks are your weapons and monsters are your guests. Draft your deck, build powerful combos, and try to survive three chaotic weeks behind the bar. KISS was well known for their image, the characters, and the merch. But behind the makeup and pyrotechnics, Ace Frehley brought the fire. Ace was the secret weapon: a Bronx-bred, unschooled guitar slinger whose wild bends, dinosaur vibrato, and pentatonic mayhem gave KISS songs their teeth. No formal lessons, just a Les Paul through a Marshall on ten, loose picking, and pure feel. He didn't just play solos—he sang through the guitar. America's 250th Anniversary is a chance to celebrate the traditions and rituals that have impacted out country, like - the American pub. From the nation's earliest days, even before the official draft of 'The Constitution', taverns have been a place where ideas are exchanged, and communities and friendships have been built. Now, the American 'watering hole' has been facing some obstacles with younger generations drinking less, and having little interest in face to face interaction. FOX's John Saucier speaks with Jon Taffer, Executive Producer of Bar Rescue', owner of 'Taffer's Tavern', and creator of 'Taffer's Browned Butter Bourbon', about the importance of the first American pubs, and why soccer fans from around the world have fallen in love with them. You guys ready for this one? Dr. Dre didn't just have a great run in hip-hop… he reshaped the entire genre three separate times in less than thirty years. First, as the driving force behind N.W.A. He helped take raw, unfiltered gangsta rap out of the streets of Compton and slam it onto the national stage. Straight Outta Compton, an actual FBI warning letter — the whole thing was a cultural explosion. Then, after leaving N.W.A., Dre basically invents the G-Funk sound. The Chronic, Snoop Dogg, laid-back Parliament-Funkadelic grooves mixed with hard street edge. Suddenly that West Coast vibe took over radio, took over the charts, and defined the entire mid-90s. And just when you think he's done? Late ‘90s Dre starts Aftermath, signs this skinny white kid from Detroit named Eminem, and opens hip-hop up to a whole new generation of fans. Then comes 50 Cent, Kendrick, and the business empire that turned him into a billionaire. Three different eras. Three different sounds. Three different ways he changed what hip-hop could be. So today we're asking: Is Dr. Dre the most important man in hip-hop history? This one's a banger. Let's get into it. Episode Playlist Check out this week's Episode Playlist. Live from the patio at McCray's Tavern on the Atlanta Beltline, Jason Longshore breaks down a statement 2-0 win for the USA over Australia that locks up a Round of 32 spot with a group match still to play. He walks through how both goals went in, an own goal forced by Folarin Balogun and a header from Alex Freeman confirmed after a lengthy VAR review, plus the underlying numbers behind a performance that didn't miss a beat without an injured Christian Pulisic. Madison Crews joins from her own watch party to give her read on the win, postgame clips from Mauricio Pochettino cover what he's seen from Freeman and Ricardo Pepi, and Jason checks in live on Scotland vs Morocco, where Ismael Saibari put Morocco in front. Plus, previews of tonight's Brazil vs Haiti and a near elimination match between Türkiye and Paraguay that could shape the rest of Group D, the USA's projected path through the knockout rounds, and the 3-4-3 to close out the show.
In his new book The Public House in Central Europe: Inns, Tavern, and Alehouses in Cracow during the Jagiellonian Dynasty (Lexington Books, 2024), Peter Dobek takes us into the daily life of the medieval tavern in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Cracow. This is the ‘Golden Age' of Poland Lithuania and the crepuscule between the Medieval and Early Modern Periods. The taverns were the public space where different categories of people mixed: travelers, merchants, diplomats, clerics, prostitutes, gamblers, and rogues. This book a time machine: Dobek writes social history as attentive and detailed narrative. We learn about the economy of the petty entrepreneur, the special roles of Jews in medieval Poland, the gray areas where prostitution and gambling thrived. Dobek's prose is lively, his research impressive, and his conclusions important. Peter Dobek is a scholar of medieval Europe particularly medieval Poland with a focus on public houses (inns, taverns, and ale houses). He received his PhD from Western Michigan University in 2019. In addition to other publications, his book is the Public House in Central Europe. Learn more about your ad choices.
