Es gibt Reisejournalisten, die Länder sammeln. Und es gibt Reisejournalisten, die Menschen sammeln. Uwe Krist gehörte für mich immer schon immer zur zweiten Sorte. Wer, wie wir, viele Jahre über touristische Ziele schreibt, sie filmt oder in Hör-Reportagen verwandelt, lernt irgendwann eine einfache Wahrheit: Die eigentlichen Sehenswürdigkeiten bestehen nicht aus Stein. Sie haben Gesichter. Sie erzählen Geschichten. Sie lachen, streiten, lieben und schweigen. Genau dort beginnt der Reisejournalismus, der mich von Anfang an fasziniert hat – weit entfernt von Hotelrankings, Restauranttipps und den berühmten „Zehn Dingen, die man unbedingt gesehen haben muss“. Wenn ich heute, selber schon fast im Abklingbecken für arbeitsmäßig etwas weniger aktive journalistisch geladene Teilchen, auf das schaue, was als „Reisebericht“ veröffentlicht wird, vermisse ich manchmal diese Art des Reisens. Nicht aus Nostalgie. Sondern weil sie auf einer Haltung beruhte: Erst verstehen, dann erzählen. Vielleicht freue ich mich deshalb so darüber, dass mein langjähriger Kollege und kollegialer Freund Uwe Krist heute Romane schreibt. Nicht, weil er dem Journalismus den Rücken gekehrt hätte. Sondern weil ich darin die logische Fortsetzung eines Berufslebens erkenne, das immer von Neugier, Respekt und genauer Beobachtung geprägt war. Reisen beginnt mit Zuhören Wer Uwe Krist kennt oder ihm zuhört, merkt schnell, dass ihn Italien nie nur als Reiseziel interessiert hat. Natürlich kennt er die Küsten Kalabriens, die kleinen Bergdörfer, die versteckten Trattorien und die großen Plätze Neapels. Aber das war nie sein eigentliches Thema. Uwe Krist in Sorrent – alle Fotos © Brigitte Jedlin Sein Thema waren immer die Menschen. Man spürt auf jeder Seite, dass hier keiner über Italien schreibt, weil er dort Urlaub gemacht hat. Sondern weil er dort jahrzehntelang zugehört hat. Wer so reist, sammelt keine Sehenswürdigkeiten. Er sammelt Begegnungen. Und irgendwann entsteht daraus etwas, das weit über eine Reportage hinausgeht. Ich glaube, genau deshalb überrascht mich sein Schritt zum Romanautor überhaupt nicht. Ein Beruf ohne verdiente Anerkennung Es gehört zu den Merkwürdigkeiten unseres Berufs, dass Reisejournalismus in vielen Redaktionen nie den Stellenwert besaß, den ihm die Leser längst verliehen hatten. Politik galt als wichtig. Wirtschaft als seriös. Kultur als intellektuell. Und Reisen? Das wurde und wird oft als angenehme, aber lässliche Randerscheinung betrachtet. Dabei war guter Reisejournalismus immer viel mehr als eine hübsche Beschreibung von Landschaften. Er war Geschichtsunterricht, Kulturvermittlung, Gesellschaftsreportage und manchmal sogar politische Analyse. Wer ein Land wirklich verstehen will, muss sich mit seiner Geschichte beschäftigen, mit seiner Mentalität, seinen Widersprüchen und seinen Menschen. Vielleicht greifen Leser gerade deshalb seit Jahrzehnten so gern zu Reisegeschichten. Nicht, weil sie nur vom nächsten Urlaub träumten. Sondern weil sie neugierig auf andere Lebenswelten waren. Zwischen Reportage und Roman Heute wird Reisen millionenfach in sozialen Netzwerken gezeigt. Vieles davon ist beeindruckend produziert, unterhaltsam und inspirierend. Daran ist nichts auszusetzen. Aber Begeisterung ersetzt keine Recherche. Ein Sonnenuntergang braucht keine Einordnung. Eine Gesellschaft schon. Der Unterschied zwischen Influencer und Reisejournalist liegt deshalb nicht in der Qualität der Bilder. Sondern in der Haltung. Der eine teilt persönliche Eindrücke. Der andere versucht, Zusammenhänge zu verstehen und verständlich zu machen. Beides hat seinen Platz. Aber es ist nicht dasselbe. Vielleicht ist genau deshalb der Roman manchmal die konsequenteste Fortsetzung eines guten Reisejournalisten. Denn dort darf endlich all das erzählt werden, wofür in einer Reportage oft kein Platz bleibt. Italien nicht erklären – sondern erleben Das beginnt schon mit den beiden Romanen selbst. „Elisabetta oder Das Sterben der Grille“ ist weit mehr als eine Geschichte vor italienischer Kulisse. Es ist ein Roman über Erinnerung, Abschied und die leisen Veränderungen eines Landes, das zwischen Tradition und Gegenwart seinen eigenen Rhythmus sucht. Italien bildet hier keine dekorative Bühne. Es ist selbst eine Figur – mit all seiner Schönheit, seinen Brüchen und seiner Melancholie. Ganz anders kommt „Margherita und die Liebe zum Damenbart“ daher. Schon der ungewöhnliche Titel macht neugierig. Mit feinem Humor und liebevoll gezeichneten Figuren erzählt Uwe Krist von den Eigenheiten Sorrents, von skurrilen Begegnungen und von Menschen, die einem lange im Gedächtnis bleiben. Hinter den kleinen Geschichten verbirgt sich ein tiefes Verständnis für die Mentalität des Südens – für seine Herzlichkeit ebenso wie für seine Widersprüche. Beide Romane verbindet etwas, das heute selten geworden ist: Sie wollen Italien nicht erklären. Sie lassen den Leser Italien erleben. Wenn Literatur zum besseren Reiseführer wird Nachdem ich die beiden Bücher durchgeschmökert hatte, ließ mich eine Frage nicht mehr los: Kann Reiseliteratur vielleicht der bessere Reiseführer sein? Ich erinnere mich, wie gerne ich früher die Merian Hefte verschlungen habe. Diese tollen Geschichten rund um ein Ziel. Alle geschrieben von sehr kundigen und professionellen Kollegen und Kolleginnen. Nach so einem Heft war ich dann viel bereiter für meine eigene Reiserecherche.  Deshalb würde ich auch oder gerade heute die Frage beantworten mit: Ja. Nicht, weil sie die besseren Adressen kennt oder den schnellsten Weg zur nächsten Sehenswürdigkeit weist. Sondern weil sie den Blick verändert. Nach einem guten Roman gehe ich anders durch eine italienische Gasse. Ich sehe nicht nur Fassaden. Ich frage mich, wer hinter den Fensterläden lebt. Ich höre Dialekte bewusster. Ich verstehe Gesten besser. Ein Reiseführer zeigt den Weg. Ein Roman zeigt den Menschen, der mir unterwegs begegnen könnte. Und genau darin liegt seine Stärke. Der schönste Luxus eines Reisejournalisten Manchmal stelle ich mir vor, wie Uwe Krist heute irgendwo auf einer Piazza in Kalabrien sitzt. Kein Aufnahmegerät mehr auf dem Tisch. Keine Redaktion, die auf den Abgabetermin wartet. Kein fester Umfang, keine Zeichenvorgaben. Nur Zeit. Vielleicht ist genau das der größte Luxus, den sich ein Reisejournalist nach einem langen Berufsleben wünschen kann: Geschichten endlich so erzählen zu dürfen, wie sie erzählt werden möchten. Nicht in 8.000 Zeichen. Sondern mit all den Farben, Stimmen und Zwischentönen, die ein Roman zulässt. Der Journalist muss sich an die Fakten halten. Der Romanautor darf den Wahrheiten folgen. Und manchmal liegen diese Wahrheiten näher beieinander, als man denkt. Warum ich optimistisch bleibe Vielleicht ist das die schönste Erkenntnis, die ich aus Uwe Krists literarischem Weg mitnehme: Guter Reisejournalismus verschwindet nicht. Er sucht sich neue Formen. Mal heißt sie Reportage. Mal Podcast. Und manchmal eben Roman. Wenn wir wissen möchten, wo der schönste Strand liegt oder welches Restaurant montags geöffnet hat, kaufen wir einen Reiseführer. Wenn wir verstehen möchten, warum ein Land seine Menschen prägt – und seine Menschen wiederum das Land –, dann greifen wir vielleicht besser zur Literatur. Denn Reiseführer erklären Orte. Gute Geschichten erklären Menschen. Und erst aus beidem entsteht eine Reise. Ich habe lange überlegt, wie ich mich den Büchern von Uwe annähern soll hier auf meinem WASMITREISEN Blog und in meinem Reiseradio. Natürlich könnte ich den klassischen Weg gehen, mir Fragen ausdenken und Uwe einladen zu einem Interview vor dem Mikro. Daran ist überhaupt nichts verkehrt. Wahrscheinlich wäre es ein sehr munteres Gespräch geworden. Und sehr authentisch. Weil, was kann näher an die Gedanken eines Autoren kommen, als seine eigenen Worte? Aber dann dachte ich mir: warum nicht mal was anderes, jetzt, wo im neuen Podcast Hype nun wirklich kein Mangel mehr besteht an Interviews oder Plauder-Talks zwischen zwei Menschen. Kann da nicht der gute alte gebaute Hörfunk-Beitrag, so, wie ich es Anfang der 80er Jahre gelernt habe beim WDR, eine Renaissance erleben? Erst eine Tiefenanalyse von Text und Quellen, dann ein grobes Script und dann ein Zweier-Studiogespräch mit verteilten Rollen. Eine gesprochene Quintessenz ohne Schnörkel, aber mit Erkenntnis und Unterhaltungswert…. Das Ergebnis möchte ich Ihnen gerne ans Herz legen. "We're selling 6 or 7x the House Lager than we are of the top-selling IPA in that taproom right now."   Hendler shared insights into the World Cup-driven boost at the company's Night Shift taprooms and beer gardens and how they prepared their brands (Jack's Abby, Wormtown, Masshole Light and Sloop) to stand out in the trade during this high visibility time.   In the Boston area, hosting the World Cup and thousands of spectators who have come to support their teams has been a boon for the hospitality industry, particularly beer distributors and breweries.   "On the ground, the atmosphere has been fantastic. People have been showing up, people are having a great time, and they're drinking a lot of beer as it goes on," Hendler said. "There's been so much talk in beer about winning occasions that are beyond what the beer occasion has always been, and the industry still obviously needs work to do on that, because the World Cup, unfortunately, won't last for 365 days a year forever. Attracting former residents back to Louisville — boomerangs, as they're known — could potentially be a way to increase the city's population.
