Steve Balliet is the Senior Manager of Hershey's US Owned Retail in Hershey, PA. In his role, Steve runs both Hershey's Chocolate World locations, with one in Hershey, PA, and one in Times Square in New York. Steve began his career at Dorney Park as a seasonal supervisor where he found his passion for the business, particularly in leadership. Later, Steve took an opportunity to move to Hershey, where he has been for more than 20 years. In this interview, Steve talks about working for a purpose, from the bean to the bar, and transformational leadership. Working for a purpose “When you think about Hershey, you think about fun, you think about chocolate, and you think about kids.” The Milton Hershey School, founded in 1920 by Milton Hershey, is a boarding school for orphan boys. Currently, the school serves thousands of underprivileged kids from all around the country from kindergarten through 12th grade. The school is funded by the Hershey Company and Hershey Entertainment & Resorts in perpetuity. For Hershey employees, whether they work in the theme park, hotel, factory, or any other business entity, they get to come to work every day knowing that their work serves even more than a profitable business, but that it truly goes to a cause that helps so many people in need. From the bean to the bar “Our stories are rooted in reality and authenticity.” One of the most iconic aspects of Hershey's Chocolate World is being able to take the factory tour, a dark ride that takes riders through the story of how chocolate is made. Steve refers to it as being an immersive experience, as it brings guests into a compelling story that is both educational and entertaining. The factory tour was part of Milton Hershey's vision of being able to showcase how the product is made to demonstrate the high-quality standard that goes into each and every piece of candy. In the 1970s, the popularity of the tour prompted the creation of Hershey's Chocolate World to create the tour as a standalone experience. Over time, the ride has been updated to reflect continual changes to the story; however, the original track layout and ride system remains unchanged. Transformational leadership “My day exists to make my team look good.” Steve refers to himself as a transformational leader and is passionate about developing the individuals in the teams that he supports. Steve defines transformational leadership as taking complex ideas and making them simple so they can be understood and implemented with ease. Transformational leadership also incorporates continuous improvement. Steve stresses the importance of failing fast and learning from mistakes in the interest of growth and continual development. Steve says that you should strive to make the guest experience a little better than the day before. To learn about Hershey's Chocolate World, visit www.chocolateworld.com. Coaster enthusiasts may know Dorney Park as a charming trolley park that grew from a salmon hatchery in the 1860's into a park, then into a theme park. Today, it's known as the home of historic rides like the Whip, some relocated rides from other parks (shout out to Demon Drop and Possessed!) as well as Thunderhawk – an ACE Landmark Coaster plus many other crowd-pleasing attractions. Though Dorney Park has its share of historic rides and thrill rides, it hadn't had a brand new large-scale attraction in quite some time. Until now! Iron Menace is a thrilling new B&M dive coaster that's being built in the location where another relocated ride, the Stinger, used to be. This August announcement took the coaster enthusiast community by storm and created a lot of buzz around Dorney Park. This week, correspondent Bryant Yeager talks to Ryan Eldredge, PR and communications director of Dorney Park about this exciting new attraction and many other great changes coming to the park. In this episode: [01:00] Meet Ryan, learn how he found his way from government work to Dorney Park [05:10] The team explored different options for the space, the dive coaster fit the themed steelyard vision and the space [12:18] The ride will include first of their kind ride elements, the Zephyr will go through the station! [15:49] The extra 5 degrees of drop and no mid-course brake run make Iron Menace unique [19:10] Additional 2024 projects (including food updates) and 2024 opening date [20:51] Thunderhawk's 100th birthday is coming, look for ways to celebrate Follow Dorney Park on Facebook to see construction progress and other announcements. Full Hour | In today's third hour, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by continuing his commentary on the day of media reckoning that has come today, with the firings of both Don Lemon and Tucker Carlson announced by CNN and Fox News respectively. Dom explains why he believes viewers loved Tucker so much, and tells what he believes this spells for the network. Then, Dom talks about another media personality, Bill Maher, who made news over the weekend by asking why major black celebrities refuse to speak out about black-on-black crime. Then, Dom tells that Dorney Park, a Pennsylvania theme park staple in the area, has now limited entrance of teenagers, requiring a chaperone unless certain conditions are met, which he fully supports. Also, Dom reveals a new push by the Biden administration to redistribute wealth by making those with good credit scores cover the bill for more risky borrowers, which Dom finds appalling. As our journey continues in the 2018 season, we had a few local park visits between our Sesame Place trip and our journey out west but we did pick up a few left over coaster credits along the way. In this week's trainwreck of an episode, Timmy is back, and some topics are very loosely discussed. Heavy emphasis on the "loosely." The hosts can't stay on topic for more than a few minutes for this episode, so the conversation derails very quickly and frequently. The second half of the show leads to talking about Timmy's California visit, at least for a short while. This episode is very chaotic, so make sure to buckle up and enjoy this week's show! Today's coaster style ERT is one that everyone loves, and everyone hates, and heck, everyone LOVES to HATE and that is the Vekoma Boomerang model. Yes, these cloned rides are all over the US and even the world but for today we will be discussing and ranking the 13 that we have had the "pleasure" to ride over the past five years. While the stats are all the same, not all boomerangs are created equal. We will be discussing the two at Six Flags New England along with the one's at Six Flags St. Louis, Worlds of Fun, Hersheypark, Morey's Piers, Lake Compounce, Six Flags Great Escape, Kings Island, Dorney Park, Canada's Wonderland, Carowinds, and Six Flags Darien Lake. Some are inverted, some are modernized, and some are even 200 ft tall. Some might even be a new credit (looking at you Jolly Rancher Remix).
