Well I hope everyone had a nice Christmas or whatever you do or don’t celebrate. As an aside, we got a nice e card from Rachel, thanks! So Christmas itself was excellent. Christmas Eve dinner was great. Jon really loved the stuff he got from everyone, but especially the stuff that Doug Slater sent him. Really out, you made his day. The letter was really nice too. Then Maddie got sick, which sorta sucks. Isabelle’s sister has a toy store, so this is her busy time. We’re both sorta out of it, it’s that time of year. I got Isabelle a scroll saw for Christmas because I’m awesome.

The new Netflix documentary “Wild, Wild Country” delves into the strange world of the Rajneeshees, a religious group that moved to Oregon in the 1980s and clashed with local townspeople. The documentary reveals plenty about those tensions, but left us hungry for more detail about everyday life at the Rajneeshee Ranch. Writer Melissa Locker tells us about the group’s cookbook, Zorba the Buddha. Then Maddie talks to chef and restaurant owner Tanya Holland about the challenges of opening a restaurant as a black woman. Bonus: Tanya plays Gross or Tasty—drawing from her time as a judge on Iron Chef.
Has anyone ever teased you about your size? On today’s episode, we talk all about fat shaming—and we hear from two amazing writers who try not to internalize all the messages about the importance of being skinny. First up, writer Lindy West, author of the book Shrill and many pieces about body image, including one for The Stranger called “Hello, I Am Fat.” Then Maddie interviews Samantha Irby, who writes the blog Bitches Gotta Eat, and has a hilarious new collection of essays called We Are Never Meeting in Real Life.
Good day, and welcome to our regularly scheduled podcst about Greece. This one was like the Italy one really, were to begin, where to stop. Well we began of course with the ancients, and Isabelle began by talking about Greek tragedy. Well those Greeks were certainly tragic, I mean really tragic. People say TV is sensationalist, check out some old plays if you want real sensationalism, then Jon woke up.... Isabelle talked some about Herodotus, a Greek historian, generally regarded as the father of modern history, well the study of it anyway, the Jon woke up. Then we talked about the importance of Greek philosophy, then Jon woke up.... Eventually Dave talked a bit about the conflict between Greece and Turkey over Cyprus, and a bit about Greek food. Then Maddie called on the phone... In the end we had to pull the plug, though we did enjoy this one a lot. I hope the volume levels are a bit better this time. Thanks to Rachel and AmHam for twittering us throughout the recording. Greece is ranked 46th by the International Ice Hockey Federation. Then Jon woke up... Next time it is off to Algeria! Then Jon woke up.
