When you think about the Black American experience, soul food is interwoven throughout its fabric. It carries stories and traditions across generations, and marks memories shared with people you love. And through the years, its definition has evolved and even been misunderstood by those who don’t understand its significance. Today, we’re unpacking all of that with Sierra Reece. Sierra is a culinary creator and entrepreneur focused on Black American foodways, soul food, and African diaspora cuisine. We talked about what soul food really means, how she balances tradition with experimentation, and why food can be such a powerful tool for preserving culture and identity. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. This special Mother's Day Mash Up episode brings together the most powerful moments of resilience, legacy, and divine identity from our journey together. Host Kristen Wambach curates a "Spiritually BRAVE" collection designed to bridge the gap between the practical grit of parenting and the supernatural wisdom available to every mother. Featuring a deep dive with Gail Showalter and mystical reflections on generational healing, this episode is a "Monday-morning" anchor for any woman leading her family toward a heavenly horizon.Episode Highlights The Practical Heart (Resilience and Faith): Special guest Gail Showalter shares her transformative journey from a single mother of three to a beacon of wisdom. Discover why asking for help is a sign of strength and how to navigate the "poverty of striving" through prayer and practical gumption. The Redemptive Mother: Kristen explores the "Beyond" posture of motherhood—moving from a place of surviving to thriving. Learn how to conduct a "relationship autopsy" to find healing and set healthy boundaries for your family's future. Rewriting the Family Tree: A look into the transformative power of generational healing. Kristen shares the divine story of "Amelia" (Also shared in her new book HOW GOOD IS GOD!), a 42-generation encounter that illustrates how the Lord can dissolve ancient burdens and restore the "blessing of the work of your hands." The Identity Anchor: Stop defining yourself by natural lineage or performance. This highlight focuses on your "original Genesis"—the truth that you are the most remarkable idea God has ever conceived and are "VALUE able" beyond measure. A "Safe Path" for the Heart: The episode concludes with a collective prayer and a reminder that your value is a "horizon of promise." Whether you are a mother, a grandmother, or a spiritual mentor, you have the authority to change the atmosphere of your home.

What happens when your confidence wanes, and the "sweet gifts" of connection start to turn sour? In this special mashup episode of the Interviewing Jesus Podcast, Kristen Wambach merges two dynamic conversations on the anatomy of trust—both our vertical trust in a "gooder" God and our horizontal navigation of human relationships.Kristen moves from the practical to the mystical, starting with the "Monday-morning" logic of daily habits. Discover why something as simple as making your bed or drinking a glass of water before your coffee builds the self-trust necessary to hear God's voice more clearly. She challenges us to trade the "blame game" for a "detective light," illuminating the paths that lead to trust breaches without losing our peace of mind.Drawing from Proverbs 4:23 and Proverbs 3:5-7, this episode provides a "spiritual investigative journalist" look at: The Beach Ball Effect: Why "sucking it up" blocks the Holy Spirit and how to let your emotions float to the surface for healing. Level 10 Access: Understanding that high-level relational access requires high-level accountability and the courage to set non-negotiable boundaries. The "Gooder" Bandwidth: Why God's goodness is always greater than our current ability to comprehend it. Relying on God's Faith: A paradigm shift from "muscling up" your own faith to resting in the faith Jesus already has in your resurrected identity. Whether you are navigating a stormy sea of a trust breach or standing at the edge of an unknown future, this episode is a compass for your heart. It's time to hoist your sails, shield your heart, and embark on a voyage toward a restorative, "spiritually brave" lifestyle.

Koji Kanematsu, the founder of Onigilly Japanese Kitchen, who shares his nearly 20-year journey of introducing Japanese rice balls to the American market. Transitioning from a background in tech startups, Koji applied a systems-oriented approach to transform a 2008 street cart into a growing franchise brand. The conversation covers his early challenges securing funding as an immigrant, the strategic pivot from urban business districts to suburban shopping centers during the pandemic, and his "Panda Express" vision for making onigiri a mainstream, healthy fast-food staple. Koji emphasizes the importance of balancing data-driven tools with human instinct and selecting franchisees who are driven by a passion for the product rather than just financial gain.10 Key Takeaways Identify a Market Gap: Koji founded the business after realizing he couldn't find the healthy, quick, and affordable lunches he enjoyed in Japan while working in San Francisco. Systems-Driven Scaling: Influenced by his tech background, Koji aimed to create a scalable system similar to Subway or McDonald's from the very beginning. Utilize NPO Funding: As an immigrant with no US credit history, Koji secured early funding through NPO lenders like La Cocina, which prioritized his vision and passion over traditional metrics. Operational Efficiency: The brand uses a centralized manufacturing model (commissary kitchens and co-packers) so individual locations only need to cook rice, simplifying the labor and skill requirements. The Power of Education: Success required teaching American consumers that onigiri is a cooked, handheld "soul food" distinct from raw-fish sushi. Adaptability in Crisis: When COVID-19 emptied the financial districts where his shops were located, Koji pivoted his growth strategy toward suburban shopping centers. Franchisee Selection Criteria: Koji prioritizes "detail-oriented" and "passionate" candidates—often former customers—over multi-unit operators who lack a connection to the brand. Human Instinct vs. Big Data: While the company uses AI traffic tools like Placer.ai, Koji personally visits potential sites for several days to verify the "feel" and traffic patterns. The "Slow" Road to Automation: It took 18 years to build the supply chain and automation necessary to support nationwide expansion because manufacturers often refuse to work with small-scale operators. Mission-Driven Growth: Beyond profit, Koji is motivated by the emotional reward of seeing a diverse American customer base embrace Japanese culture through food.
How does a private prayer pillow encounter in Corvallis become a recorded document in the Library of Congress? In this "Mashup" episode, Kristen Wambach revisits the raw, emotional "first fruits" of her spiritual journey. Through a rare archival transcript of her first book release, we witness the "rabbi trails," red Converse All-Stars, and "Twinkie" communion that started it all. This isn't just a look back; it's a masterclass in the growth of a vision. Kristen bridges the gap between the scribbled notes of The UnFinished Book and the global authority found in her latest release, HOW GOOD IS GOD!. Experience the evolution of a spiritual investigative journalist and discover that your "small" beginnings are simply the first chapter of a divine sequel.Episode Takeaways The Power of the First Fruit: Understand the spiritual law of "first mention" and why dedicating your initial victories to God creates a "bubble" of grace for everything that follows. Decoding Spiritual Symbols: From the "Conversation All-Star" red shoes to the "Rabbit/Rabbi Trail," learn how God uses personal, even "goofy" symbols to anchor deep identity and calling. The Evolution of a Vision: Witness the transition from the internal "Gates" structure (Hell, Pew, Pulpit, Heaven) to a "Beyond" posture that prioritizes hope and redemption over doctrine. Outcome-Focused Activation: Experience the "Monday-morning" logic of the Barrel and Gondola activation—a practical path to exchanging wilderness debris for divine resources. A Special Invitation: Step Into the "Beyond"If the echoes of this first book release stirred a hunger in you, then the journey is just beginning. We are officially inviting you to step out of the "unfinished" and into the fullness of the Father's heart. How Good is God! is now available. This isn't just a sequel; it is a practical path featuring raw stories, prayer, and simple activations designed for the seeker, the entrepreneur, and the spiritually brave. Move past the "gates" and into a reality where heaven isn't a destination, but your current atmosphere."Brokenness was always supposed to reveal the cream center." — Kristen Wambach

Pastor Caleb Schafer, the Lead Pastor at Redeemer's Church, begins a series on the SEVEN profound I AM statements of Jesus found in the gospel of John. March 22nd, 2026 | 3.22.26 Category: Bread, Eternal, Satisfied
It can be an incredibly painful philosophical pill to swallow and believe that life is actually, despite appearances, happen for and through us. But if you are able and willing to reflect a little…it is a pill of empowerment. An opportunity to find, appreciate and utilise the positives from any situation. Even if it is just to know more accurately what it is we don't prefer as apposed to what we do prefer. For every day is “Judgment Day” and never before in human history have we been so acutely aware of the scope and depth of human potential for “good and evil”. We are going through foretold apocalyptic times where everything is being revealed and nothing can be hidden for long. So it is on both a global and individual level we are being squeezed to reveal what we are truly made of. A great purge of toxicity coming to the surface to be faced and healed. A strong invitation to reflect and act upon who we truly are and what we truly love, value and trust when gentle push comes to aggressive shove. We too are facing of our own strong squeeze or invitation. Early February we were served a letter of unaffordable rent increase or 2 month ‘break-clause' to leave our home. We decided that it was our own Universal Letter, to choose a path that in all honesty we'd been discussing and toying with for a long while. A path of travel, adventure and the search for our own real home. We love much of our life. The people in it, the work we do, time with family and friends and everything we've created here over the last 20-50 years. It's not a case of ‘this is wrong' - move, but more a, something isn't quite flowing and we are being called elsewhere. We have an abundance of skills, experience, love and connections, however for some reason finances have been incredibly challenging since the pandemic and we have not quite find our true alignment and flow. Therefore, with our quest for adventure, for beauty, for diversity, we are heading off on our own adventure. In a way it is not the start of our adventure but just the next chapter of us practicing finding our joyful moment to moment momentum. Our rough dream is to take ‘Soulhub on Tour' and create ‘Restoration Hubs' around the world for those who feel overwhelmed by the world, to come and find rest and restoration with us. As yet we are unsure of where the wind will take us…but we hope that you will follow our journey and perhaps be inspired to invite a little adventure into your own lives. We'll be out of our flat from 19 May, and hope to remain near Richmond with friend/housesitting until mid-late summer. Whilst we honour our commitments here including Dance Al Fresco. In the meantime we'll be selling off our belongings, so if you can help share those, buy them then please do give them new homes. TO TRUST IN LIFE ITSELF In today's podcast conversation we start as we mean to carry on… sharing openly and honestly about what it's been like, and how we are with things right here and now. Our plan is to stay open, present and trusting what is calling us. So please we kindly ask that you dance with us between the known and the unknown. As always, we'd love to see and hear from you along the way. Hear about your Soul Places, Soul People, Soul Food. There are ways you can be involved if you'd care to be, otherwise, enjoy the observations…HOW TO GET INVOLVED:* Share our Soulhubbers Podcasts (eg. This episode)* Support us and our work via GoFundMe* Share and connect us with your ideas of things/people/places you think we'd love and are worth sharing with the world. * Come join us at our WalkIn…DanceOut Retreats (Ireland 13-16 Oct. Or Northumberland 26-29 Nov 2026) or tell others about it* Book Therapeutic Coaching sessions with us online. * Express an interest in our Restoration Hubs (Likely to be Spain in Sept, Costa Rica in Winter, and South Africa early 2027).* HOME SALE - Buy or share our homely goods from upholstered armchairs, wardrobes to mugs and soaps - Link to photos here. Please do message us if something catches your eye. We'll be updating it as a live library as we put more on, and remove the sold items. We're open to donations of all sizes to our GoFundMe for the goods. Today, macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food, a staple of weeknight dinners, family gatherings, and Soul Food restaurants. Humble though the dish may seem, its history is filled with surprising twists and turns. Renaissance cardinals and popes dined on elaborate pasta-and-cheese concoctions laced with costly spices. In the eighteenth century, wealthy young Englishmen made macaroni a symbol of continental sophistication. Black women, whose contribution has long been overshadowed, played a crucial role in establishing the dish as an American tradition from the nation's founding through the Civil Rights Movement. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese: From Ancient Rome to Modern America (Columbia UP, 2026) by Dr. Karima Moyer-Nocchi is a delectable history of macaroni and cheese, tracing an extraordinary journey of cultural exchange and social change. Karima Moyer-Nocchi reveals the religious, political, and industrial forces that shaped its evolution alongside stories of the unsung figures who crafted the dish as we know it today: enslaved cooks who preserved and adapted traditions, immigrant chefs who introduced new variations, and practical homemakers looking to nourish their families with an affordable meal. She emphasizes the adaptability of macaroni and cheese, which in different times has served as both an indulgence on the elite table and sustenance to those struggling to survive, crossing borders, social classes, and cultural divides. Deeply researched and rich with enticing details, this book uncovers the creativity and resilience that brought a beloved food to our tables. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese also shares centuries of recipes—from ancient Roman authors to celebrity chefs, reworked for modern kitchens—that provide a hands-on way to experience the evolution of this iconic dish. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Chef Geoff Davis opened Burdell in Oakland to cook the soul food his grandmothers made — a distinct American cuisine rooted in migration and adaptation rather than Southern tradition. In 2024, Food & Wine named it the "Restaurant of the Year." But it was a 20% service fee at the bottom of Burdell's receipts that recently started a national conversation about labor, class, and whether we've ever really reckoned with the history of tipping.

Kasey Jernigan (Choctaw) interviewed and observed Choctaw women over a period of years about food and their relationships to it. She documents what she learned in those observations in her new book, “Commod Bods: Embodied Heritage, Foodways and Indigeneity”. The book uses federal food and nutrition assistance as the jumping off point for an exploration of individual perceptions of food and colonial influences on Native health outcomes. A quaint eatery in Arizona's Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is attracting attention over and above the dozens of other frybread stands that dot reservation roadsides across the country. The Stand was just named one of USA Today's 2026 Restaurants of the Year. It's built by the same person who makes the frybread dough and serves the soup in a decidedly rustic setting. Author, poet, educator and legal scholar Marique B. Moss (Photo: courtesy M. Moss) Marique B. Moss explores her Black and Indigenous identity in her poetic memoir, “Sweetgrass and Soul Food”. She is among the Native people offering support to Minneapolis residents in the wake of the expanded immigration efforts from her space, Mashkiki Studios.
