Today, macaroni and cheese is the ultimate comfort food, a staple of weeknight dinners, family gatherings, and Soul Food restaurants. Humble though the dish may seem, its history is filled with surprising twists and turns. Renaissance cardinals and popes dined on elaborate pasta-and-cheese concoctions laced with costly spices. In the eighteenth century, wealthy young Englishmen made macaroni a symbol of continental sophistication. Black women, whose contribution has long been overshadowed, played a crucial role in establishing the dish as an American tradition from the nation's founding through the Civil Rights Movement. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese: From Ancient Rome to Modern America (Columbia UP, 2026) by Dr. Karima Moyer-Nocchi is a delectable history of macaroni and cheese, tracing an extraordinary journey of cultural exchange and social change. Karima Moyer-Nocchi reveals the religious, political, and industrial forces that shaped its evolution alongside stories of the unsung figures who crafted the dish as we know it today: enslaved cooks who preserved and adapted traditions, immigrant chefs who introduced new variations, and practical homemakers looking to nourish their families with an affordable meal. She emphasizes the adaptability of macaroni and cheese, which in different times has served as both an indulgence on the elite table and sustenance to those struggling to survive, crossing borders, social classes, and cultural divides. Deeply researched and rich with enticing details, this book uncovers the creativity and resilience that brought a beloved food to our tables. The Epic History of Macaroni and Cheese also shares centuries of recipes—from ancient Roman authors to celebrity chefs, reworked for modern kitchens—that provide a hands-on way to experience the evolution of this iconic dish. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Chef Geoff Davis opened Burdell in Oakland to cook the soul food his grandmothers made — a distinct American cuisine rooted in migration and adaptation rather than Southern tradition. In 2024, Food & Wine named it the "Restaurant of the Year." But it was a 20% service fee at the bottom of Burdell's receipts that recently started a national conversation about labor, class, and whether we've ever really reckoned with the history of tipping.

Are you struggling to keep the noise of life quiet? Imagine tuning an old-school radio, turning the dial through the static until a clear voice finally breaks through. That is the art of cultivating spiritual hearing. In this special MashUp Episode, we are slowing down to quiet the clamor and intentionally tune into the frequency of the Spirit.I'm sharing a deeply personal encounter from 2016 that shifted my perspective forever—the morning Lonnie Frisbee, a key catalyst of the Jesus Revolution, stepped from the unseen realm directly into my bedroom. Sharpening the Axe: Why tool preparation and "getting present" is more vital than the work itself. The Cloud of Witnesses: A firsthand account of an encounter with Lonnie Frisbee and the "agreement" signed in the Spirit. One Faith, One Source: Shifting from "mustering up faith" to resting in the faith of Jesus that already lives within you. Practical Journaling: Why writing it down is a scientifically and spiritually backed gateway to self-confidence and divine clarity.

World renowned choreographer turned actor Darrin Henson joins us for a powerful, culture rich conversation about legacy, purpose, and the Latino influence that helped shape his life and career. Raised in the Bronx, Darrin opens up about growing up alongside Latinos in his neighborhood and how Latino culture, friendships, and community played a lasting and positive role in his upbringing. From early life lessons to lifelong connections, he reflects on the moments that stayed with him and continue to guide him today. Darrin shares behind the scenes stories from working with some of the biggest icons in music history, including Jennifer Lopez, Enrique Iglesias, Christina Aguilera, and the ultimate GOATs Michael Jackson and Prince. He also opens up about being first cousins with Taraji P. Henson and how talent, faith, and perseverance run deep in his family. One of the most jaw dropping moments of the interview is when Darrin reveals why he walked away from choreography at the height of his career, right after winning a VMA for *NSYNC’s iconic “Bye Bye Bye” routine, a dance he owns as his intellectual property. The very choreography later appeared in the film Deadpool, and for which the production had to properly compensate him for its use. Darrin also breaks down his transition into acting, starring in beloved series like Soul Food and The Family Business, along with his evolution into an author and motivational speaker focused on purpose, ownership, and spiritual alignment. This is a must listen conversation about culture, creativity, faith, and knowing when to pivot.
Come sing along with your favorite sixteen-year-old virgins as we eat soul food and then discuss Hair (1979). The nostalgia factor figures into Brandon's love of the film, but with Blake and Jose, it's neither relatable nor memorable. What the world needs more than ever is some beads, flowers, freedom, and happiness. We agree that the film is ripe for a modern up-do.

Tanya Holland—celebrity chef, cookbook author, entrepreneur, and founder of the acclaimed Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland—shares how she brings olive oil into the world of modern soul food. While many don't traditionally associate olive oil with soul food, Tanya embraces it to make her dishes both healthier and more flavorful. From olive oil–based marinades, sauces, and vinaigrettes to sautéing collard greens in olive oil instead of lard or butter, she shows how this ingredient can elevate classic dishes. In conversation with Alexandra Kicenik Devarenne, director of the Extra Virgin Alliance, Tanya discusses the role of olive oil in the soul food kitchen and opportunities for growth within the foodservice industry. She advocates for more restaurants to use high-quality olive oil—especially in salad dressings—and to move away from industrial pre-made options. This video was produced by The Culinary Institute of America as an industry service to the International Olive Council. Then, Carla walks Jessie through her Gingerbread Cake With Snow Sugar, a deeply spiced, ultra-moist loaf that uses the reverse-creaming method for a very tender crumb. She explains why hot water is the secret ingredient, how to make “snow sugar” that won't melt into the cake, and why “sawing” is the only proper way to slice a loaf cake.Click here for Carla's Gingerbread Cake with Snow Sugar recipe.Thank you to Diamond Nuts, California Prunes, and King Arthur Baking for their support. The guys go through some of the best pitches so far. ("Best" is strong.) Then: Conspiracy theories aren't your job. What is? You have heard that Israel k*lled Charlie. Or that Elon is a lizard man. What next? Make sure you're rooted in the God, who never changes, before you think about investigating conspiracy theories (which always change). And then, understand that you will never know. Understand how streaming incentivizes the wildest and craziest takes...and AI has made it a million times worse. Obviously the government lies (MK Ultra? Covid? NSA?). Trust people / churches who haven't lied to you. Internalize the Coca-Cola CEO's words: "The truth is, we're not that smart; and we're not that dumb." One of these isn't not untrue: A Jew rules the world. Birds aren't real. "Hello SASFers -- Happy No Quarter November to all who celebrate! Visit noquarternovember.com for free ebooks all month long."
