Your speaking pace is an important key component of engaged, entertaining communication. Mastering your speaking pace and knowing when to slow down versus speed up is important in ultimately communicating your message clearly. I've said it before but it's not what you say, but how you say it that is important. Practicing this skill is helpful to communicate certain ideas and knowing which ideas are best delivered slowly or fast is helpful to your listener. Loudness, Pitch and Length are the trifecta of engaging speech. Mastering each of these suprasegmental aspects of English communication presents a speaker with the capability to communicate nuance and command attention. Without it, you may be understood in content but the delivery may be lackluster, monotonous and ultimately fall on deaf ears. These aspects of English communication are not consistently discussed in language learning schools to the degree that I think is necessary as compared with grammar and it can communicate (even unconsciously) lack of confidence. EP22 - Native English Speaker Learns Hard-to-Pronounce Words

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2019 7:59

Stumbled upon 31 Commonly Mispronounced Words and figured it would be helpful to hear a native English speaker struggle, think and learn pronunciations of words. A key insight is that native English speakers aren't crippled by the incongruencies between a word's pronunciation and its spelling. Non-native English speakers focus very heavily on this mismatch and at times, are paralyzed by it rather than being able to move on. Native English speakers will naturally encounter new words that they have never heard before. As the language adopts new words, there will naturally be new words or old words that become popular. Native English speakers will extract the value by hearing the pronunciation and associate it with the visual representation of the word, but are NOT crippled by any mismatch that occurs because there is ALREADY an acceptance of exceptions to the spelling. Being comfortable with that mismatch is the key to being comfortable with English. In this episode, I ruminate over a recent journal article read about Pakistani-English and the frustrations associated with English language learning centers in Pakistan. Many of the raised concerns are factors that are not even directly related to the techniques or processes in teaching English, but based on the socio-cultural standing of the learners and country. Although I have concerns with the methodology of the investigation, the qualitative sentiment that the author communicates is palpable and establishes some potentially detrimental concerns with predictable repercussions. While prepping for a client session focused on the Canadian R sound, I figured I might as well document my prep and explain several ways to achieve the R sound. Furthermore, in Canadian English, the sound is made using a stiff or tense tongue. It is not relaxed and flapping against the roof of your mouth like the trilled R sound that is present in other languages. Without a model to appropriately imitate or follow, learning a native English accent can be a challenge because the speech patterns and nuanced prosody are lost or not fully communicated. EP06 - Two approaches to accent modification: Traditional and Functional

Sharing my thoughts on how to approach accent modification and what are two ways to approach the issue. by better having an understanding of how to approach accent modification as a whole, you can better understand the impact of approaching accent modification in one way or another. The traditional method builds a foundational understanding of sound production, manner of articulation, and placement to ensure you have an understanding of the sounds involved. The other method is to choose functional words you use on a daily basis and targeting those specific sounds and words to ultimately alleviate frustrations in communication that currently impact your communicative success. EP05 - The Big Picture: Understanding How to Think About Accents

Without an understanding of the big picture and how to view accent learning, learning an accent or even evaluating your own accent can be difficulty, at best. There are fundamental building blocks and prerequisites to understand how speech production and sound work before you can learn a new way of speaking. Many times, clients approach learning an accent with the individual sounds but don't have a greater appreciation for HOW they can change their mouth shape to alter their speech sounds. Without a strong understanding of the basic skills, consistent and reliable changes can be hard to master and further frustrate clients along their journey of self-improvement. If you missed the discussions on mouth anatomy and the international phonetic alphabet, check out my last two episodes. They are pretty content heavy but worth the listen! Before we can talk about English pronunciation, we need to better describe sounds and systematically categorize them based on criteria. Otherwise, it becomes an impossible he heard vs. she heard subjective debate. Having a better appreciation of what is involved in sound production (using the learned mouth anatomy from the last episode), better facilitates an understanding of what mouth parts are involved in what sounds. In this episode, I talk about the basic anatomy involved in making sound. Although the content is not specific to accent learning or English learning, it is an important fundamental aspect to learning any sound production in order to better understand WHAT is moving when you change sounds. If you don't have control of WHAT is moving, then issues regarding HOW and WHEN they need to move becomes harder. Check out my instagram for an accompanying image of the mouth anatomy. Many times, clients will have a vague idea of what they want and what they expect from accent consultation services. They want to get better but better is such a vague concept and very subjective. There are 3 concepts that need to be discussed to better qualify and compartmentalize peoples' wants and desires: 1) Accentedness 2) Speech Intelligibility 3) Ease of Comprehension By better grasping how these are interrelated and prioritizing them, you can better understand and focus your efforts on what matters to you. It'll also re-frame what you want into a more understandable, realistic and measureable goal.
