Brian Madden, from VMware's EUC Office of the CTO, hosts this podcast about end-user computing.
On this episode, Brian & Gabe welcomed Tom Campbell, a VMware staff engineer (also from Ohio like Brian & Gabe!) who walked us through how he approaches VMware Horizon design projects. This podcast is great for people like us who have been working with Citrix since the 1990s but who haven't really dug into Horizon. What's the same? What's different? What's important to know? In this episode, we discussed: How real is the non-persistent desktop today, and how real is the ability to give a non-persistent desktop a persistent look and feel? How do you manage OS image sprawl? How VMware Horizon Instant Clones work, and how they're different from the older Linked Clones technology. How applications are managed, including when to use App Volumes, ThinApp, and/or native installs. How user profiles are managed in modern times, including how VMware Dynamic Environment Manager (DEM) is used and why it is different than traditional profile management. How VMware's Blast remoting protocol works, and what Blast Extreme Adaptive Transport (BEAT) works. How to be successful with Horizon designs and deployments Differences and similarities to Citrix. Overall it was a great conversation and our hour flew by! We will definitely invite Tom back in the future!
In this episode, we invited Naveen Pitchandi, VMware's product management lead for all things Apple. Our conversation covered: Apple TV, and tvOS management. (Really Gabe and Brian were just impressed that was a thing!) Mac and macOS management in the enterprise, including history, the community, and how that's evolved over the years. iPhone / iOS 13 user enrollment. iPadOS and differences & similarities to managing Macs and iPhones. Earlier this month, Gabe was at Microsoft Ignite in Orlando while Brian was at VMworld 2019 in Barcelona. We covered all the EUC announcements from Barcelona on the last show, so this week we're digging into the various EUC announcements Microsoft made at Ignite, as well as what they mean for VMware. Specific topics included: What exactly is Microsoft Windows Virtual Desktops (WVD) How VMware Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure will soon support the features of Windows Virtual Desktop. An overview of Microsoft's "App Attach" technology & announcement (based on FSLogix technology which is where Gabe worked when Microsoft acquired them last year). Microsoft's surprising announcement about comanagement as a destination, and the combination of SCCM + Intune which will be called Microsoft Endpoint Manager (MEM) moving forward. VMware's announcement about a feature version of Workspace ONE UEM for Microsoft Endpoint Manager customers. How VMware Workspace ONE UEM for Microsoft Endpoint Manager will work and integrate with MEM. Of note this week is we did not have any retractions to announce from our prior show. (We're unsure if that means we're getting better or simply no one is listening.)
Now that both VMworld 2019 US and Europe editions are over, Brian & Gabe sat down to discuss all the EUC-related announcements. (And holy cow there were a lot!) Here's what we discussed on this episode: Employee Experience announcements Intelligent Hub Virtual Assistant VMware AirLift 2.0 Day 0 / Candidate Experience Intelligent Hub Intelligent Hub multifactor authentication HID Integreation / Intelligent Hub Passport New integrations with Jira, BMC Remedy, and PagerDuty (in addition to existing ones, ServiceNow, etc.) Workspace ONE Privacy Guard (with SDK) VMware EUC Zero Trust initiative Risk Analytics (Device Risk Score & User Risk Score) Trust Network is now GA New Trust Network partners using ingest APIs: Zscaler, Wandera, Zimperium Workspace ONE Intelligence for consumer apps Workspace ONE Intelligence automation connector Workspace ONE Smartfolio Appdome integration (no-code mobile apps powered by WS1) Windows 10 enterprise app repo (powered by Liquit) Baseline auditing for Win GPOs and MDM policies More Okta integrations Horizon:Cloud-based control plane Image service Monitoring Management Console API App Volumes 4 Workspace ONE for Microsoft Endpoint Manager (We'll discuss this in-depth in the next show where we cover the Microsoft Ignite announcements.) This week on the Definitely Not Official VMware EUC Podcast, guest Jon Towles joins Brian Madden and Gabe Knuth. Jon is known as "Mobile Jon", blogging at mobile-jon.com and tweeting via @m0bilej0n. Jon has been a mobile architect for a long time, and the conversation today was awesome, touching on: How Jon made the transition from retail store manager to enterprise mobility architect. How "mobile people" can pick intentional topics to learn about to advance their careers. Why Jon loves VMware Identity Manager and hates the name change to Workspace ONE Access. Where VMware Workspace ONE Access really shines. What "real" single sign-on (SSO) is, and how it's more than just having one username and password to remember. Why it's important to have your own website. (hint: It's the your portfolio!) The fact that Brian is not, as it turns out, able to part the Red Sea. The importance of understanding the back-end architecture of how the things you're building really work. What Jon is most excited about for VMworld 2019 next week. If you don't know Jon, you really should check out his blog. Here are some of the articles & posts we mentioned during the show: VMware Boxer’s new FastSync tech could usher in a better third-party email experience The Life of a Mobility Engineer The fictitious case study designing VMware Workspace ONE for a real (fake) customer (*must read)
The band is back together! In this episode, Brian Madden welcomes Gabe Knuth to VMware. They discuss what Gabe's been up to since the two of them worked together three years ago. Gabe talks about his time since leaving BrianMadden.com, including his role doing product marketing for FSLogix and what it was like working at a company that was acquired by Microsoft. They also discuss Gabe's new role a VMware—doing product marketing for VMware Horizon Cloud—and what's happening with VMware and EUC in general. BTW, at the end of the podcast, the sound fades out in the middle of Gabe talking. I don't know why, I guess I was just rusty at the process. :) But we were wrapping up anyway.
Brian Madden speaks with VMware's Jason Roszak, a product manager leading up how VMware Workspace ONE manages and secures Windows 10 clients. In this podcast, we talked about: Windows 10 Modern Management What you can do with it, and its out-of-the-box limitations Modern Management versus legacy management like Microsoft SCCM How VMware Workspace ONE extends the Windows 10 Modern Management limitations Windows 10 Autopilot (Out Of Box Experience / OOBE) Windows 10 device security, without ownership or domain joins Comanagement / Coexistence, where VMware Workspace ONE can live side-by-side with SCCM
