238: Are You Masking or Fixing The Problem?

Just because it’s a fad doesn’t mean we have to line up and follow the pack, you know that right? We are human beings with the power and ability to reason and question the things that go on around us. By “masking” the problem I am referring to putting a bandaid over a knife wound instead of “Fixing” the problem by going and getting the wound stitched so that it heals properly without further negative consequences (infection, etc.). When thinking about our health and daily body functionality are we putting on multiple bandaids (taking pain killers, calling in “sick” to work, etc.) everyday or are we seeking out solutions (making an appointment with a physiotherapist, chiropractor, massage therapist, dentist, doctor, naturopath, changing eating habits, tracking our food consumption, etc.) to fix the underlying problems? We all have those days! I had one just yesterday. All I did was walk 6500 steps but it sure felt good to get out of the house and do something active for 30 to 35 minutes. Now, I have mentioned tracking or journalling your workouts and your routines in the past. However, another method to see where you are at, or rather to measure yourself is to add time to a particular exercise. This measures your muscle capacity and endurance. If you are great at pull-ups or think that push-ups are easy time yourself performing 25, 50, 100 reps and see how long it takes you to complete the full 100 or other number you choose. We gain fat, lose strength, and our heart and lungs weaken via process: sedentary lifestyle and consuming more calories than we expend...likewise we improve strength, lose fat, grow our heart and lung capacity via process: eating many vegetables, fruits, proteins, fats and minimal simple carbohydrates (ex. Sugar, bread, juice,etc) and expending more calories than we consume in a day. Please do not fall for the stand on vibrators of the world and the easy fat loss pills or strap on electronic pulse pads that claim to “give you abs” -how are you given something you didn’t work for? Maintenance is a critical aspect of regular care for any aspect of life. You have two choices when it comes to taking care of YOU and the THINGS you have: 1) Crisis Management 2) Maintenance Management. Regular maintenance on your vehicle does take a small investment along the way but ultimately allows your vehicle to run longer while fixing the systems that fail due to neglect and “pushing through” will ensure that you go through vehicles faster than you would otherwise need to and also ensures a heftier fee when repair is needed. You don’t need New Years to come around again in order to make changes and improvements in your life. Change today, start now...I mean literally right now. Put down that cigarette and throw out everything associated with smoking and stop now-you’re a non-smoker until you pick up that next cigarette. Set your alarm an extra hour early and drive to the gym or do a home workout video before work tomorrow. Whatever it is for you just start, stop waiting for “a good time”, because there is never a “good time” to change and do something that is uncomfortable for us. I don’t know anything about podcasting, but I just started and plan to get better as I set aside time every day even when there are days (today) that I don’t know what to say and don’t want to record. Have you ever used a gym that you have to scan in for admission? If so, have you ever had the staff member behind the desk pick up the scanner and try to help you scan in? Today I address this issue. I feel that scanning in is an easy task for almost anyone if not everyone that is coming in as a member. I understand there might be an exception with hands full or maybe a child or two so this is the exception. I say these are pet peeves but what they really are is incorrect use of gym equipment...I know I know, some people may not know how to use these things because nobody takes the time to show us how to utilize the gym space and the equipment therein - we are left to our own devices and our own interpretation. However, I’m not letting you or me off the hook because there are pictures on most equipment demonstrating proper use and all of us carry a “smart” phone with us everywhere we go and can conduct our own research and ask clarifying questions in google search until we are confident in taking action.
