17: Episode 17- The Model Swing with Biomechanics Expert and Founder of ModelGolf Dr. Ralph Mann

In this episode we are joined by Dr. Ralph Mann, a former Olympic hurdler and world record holder with a Ph.D. in biomechanics. Dr. Mann also co-authored the book, "Swing Like a Pro" with Fred Griffin.  Dr. Mann became interested in biomechanics 40 years ago as a way to become more competitive in world-class athletics. Looking for any edge to improve his performance in the 400-meter hurdles, he analyzed film of the world's best hurdlers and found a way to incorporate what they were doing into his performance. As a result, Dr. Mann set a world record during the U.S. Olympic Trials in 1972 finishing in 48.4 seconds and took home the silver medal in the 400mH at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. In 1983, Dr. Mann founded CompuSport International, the forerunner of ModelGolf, in which he would use his technology to come up with the perfect swing. To do this, Dr. Mann filmed the swing of more than 120 players at high speed -- including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman and Davis Love III. The frames were then digitized to get their best swing characteristics. Thus was born the Model Pro.

Never underestimate the importance of a good setup as this will "set" the stage for most everything that happens, good or bad, in your swing.  Often times, golfers tend to overlook their setup to focus on generating power in their takeaway or speed in their downswing. This unconcious neglect will ultimately lead to everything you don't want to happen, programming your body to facilitate poor swing mechanics that are very difficult to retrain and hugely problematic. When this occurs, we are placing our body and overall physical wellbeing at risk for chronic pain/injury(s) to develop. And like anything that becomes chronic, the road to recovery will most times take up to a few months to even a year before one will even be able to step back onto the course or hit a ball! Listen to this episode as Dr. Napolitano, "The Golf Doc," PGA Professional Jon Decker, and golf media superstar Ted Odorico discuss the proper way to set yourself up for success in the swing through a powerful combination that every golfer must possess to execute the highest level of performance- technique and skill!

A Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Griffin teamed with CompuSport International and Dr. Ralph Mann to create the first science-based curriculum program based on high-speed video and computer graphics in the golf instruction industry. The SwingModel video teaching system has become a staple of the Academy, which was recognized by Golf Magazine as one of its Top 25 Golf Schools in America. This dedicated passion for research based instruction is what sets Griffin apart from other programs. In fact, he and Dr. Mann have spent years together and as a result have completed scientific research on all aspects of the game from full swing, putting, pitch and run, pitching and bunker play. A regular on Golf Digest’s Best Teachers in Your State list, Griffin has served on the National PGA Presidents Council and National PGA Teaching Committee and spoken at four PGA Teaching and Coaching Summits.
