Send us a textLife in community associations can feel like a pressure cooker—board members navigating tough calls, homeowners facing surprise assessments, and industry professionals managing nonstop demands. The common thread? Stress. In this week's Take It To The Board podcast, host Donna DiMaggio Berger welcomes Dr. Tai Johnson, a specialist in acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine, for a fascinating conversation on how holistic practices—and understanding your body's meridians—can help ease the pressure for everyone.Donna and Dr. Johnson expertly break down the concept of "chi" – the vital energy that flows through our bodies – and explain how blockages created by stressors can be relieved through strategic needle placement. Dr. Johnson reveals how acupuncture shifts us from the sympathetic "fight-or-flight" state (where most of us constantly operate) to the parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" mode where healing can occur. This transition proves particularly valuable for those navigating the complex interpersonal dynamics of community governance.Beyond the needles, the conversation offers practical self-care techniques anyone can implement immediately. Learn about tongue diagnosis (what Dr. Johnson calls a "Chinese MRI"), the significance of ear massage, and how different body pains might reflect specific emotional patterns – lower back pain often signaling feelings of being unsupported-perfect for understanding board-related stress. Dr. Johnson also shares insights from her nonprofit work providing community acupuncture for veterans with PTSD, demonstrating the accessibility of this healing modality. While the tensions of community association living aren't disappearing anytime soon, this episode provides valuable tools to approach them with greater balance and resilience. Whether you're curious about Eastern medicine or desperately seeking stress relief, you'll walk away with practical techniques to incorporate into your busy life. Ready to rethink your approach to wellness? Your meridians might thank you. Conversation Highlights:Common misconceptions about acupunctureThe effect of acupuncture on the nervous systemSpecific acupuncture points effective for reducing stress and anxietyBenefits of acupuncture for sleep quality and mental clarity in leadership rolesAlternative traditional Chinese medicine techniques for stress relief (e.g., cupping, herbal remedies, acupressure)The role of meditation and breathwork in complementing acupuncture for stress managementQuick and actionable stress-relief techniques for those without time for regular sessionsSimple self-applied acupressure points for use during stressful moments like HOA meetings or negotiationsTips on choosing the right acupuncture practitioner for stress relief Related Links:Podcast: Radical Self-Care Can Change the World with Shelly Tygielski, Founder of Pandemic LovePodcast: The Mental Health Challenge with Chris Ayoub, President, RealManage

Reiki seems to be the latest discovery, and we also know that some types of Yoga are considered to have healing qualities. Today, we're going to talk about Pranic healing. This practice was established by Choa Kok Sui, a Philippino scientist, chemical engineer and enlightened teacher. He researched and experimented for twenty years to develop a form of healing that is both astonishingly effective and can be learned by almost anyone. We're going to dig deeper on this topic so I want to welcome back my wonderful friend, Shreya as we discuss, “What is Pranic Healing.” Shreya can be reached on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/theshreyagoyal_/Or email her at: theshreyagoyal1@gmail.com Mention that you heard her on the podcast and you can experience Pranic Healing for only $20. What if the freedom you're craving isn't on the other side of doing more—but of letting go in a way you never have before? In this deeply personal episode, Heather sits down with ceremonial guide and psychedelic facilitator Eddy Tony, the man who held space for her own ceremonies. Heather opens up about why she was initially resistant to psychedelic work, how it found her anyway, and what it revealed that traditional personal development practices never could. Eddy shares his own emotional “dark night of the soul” and how it led him from party culture and burnout to becoming a sought-after guide for transformational healing. Together, they dive into what it actually takes to surrender, the difference between desperation and readiness, and why true leadership requires emotional discomfort. In this episode, Heather and Eddy explore: *How to approach psychedelic work responsibly—and how to know if it's aligned *Why “bad trips” are not actually bad but incredible reflective opportunities *The energetic boundary tools Eddy uses to hold space for deep transformation *The identity shift that happens when you stop outsourcing your healing Healing isn't always logical. Sometimes the most powerful growth happens when you stop managing everything—and trust the deeper work to unfold. Eddy Tony grew up near London, Ontario, in a home influenced by both Catholicism, through his mother, and Buddhism, through his father. As the eldest of three, he developed a deep curiosity about life's big questions but drifted from faith in his twenties. For a decade, he owned a Thai restaurant and a gay nightclub. However, a personal health and lifestyle crisis became a turning point, leading him into the wellness industry and inspiring him to open a boutique fitness studio. As a coach, he witnessed remarkable transformations in his clients. However, the tragic loss of his youngest brother, who fell 17 stories to his death, compelled him to reconnect with his spirituality and explore his inner world more deeply. Eddy embarked on a 2.5-year healing sabbatical, studying Eastern Medicine and Indigenous healing practices. In 2019, he established a private home practice in Toronto, offering an urban retreat that supports individuals through mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical challenges. His journey has been guided by passion and purpose, and he considers it a true blessing to do this work. Eddy looks forward to supporting those who seek healing and transformation. Join us as we dive into the fascinating mind of Dr. Neil Theise, a pathologist and professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, whose groundbreaking research spans from the discovery of the interstitium to the study of complexity theory and consciousness. In this episode, Dr. Theise shares with Dr. Lorne Brown his insights from his book, "Notes on Complexity: A Scientific Theory of Connection, Consciousness, and Being," discussing how the interstitium acts as a bridge between different healing paradigms and how complexity theory explains everything from biology to human behavior. We also explore how quantum physics, consciousness, and interconnectedness are deeply woven into our understanding of health and well-being. Key takeaways: The interstitium is a crucial fluid-filled network throughout the body, linking different healing systems. Complexity theory reveals the interconnected nature of life. Our consciousness may be intrinsic to the structure of the universe. Eastern and Western medicine have more commonalities than differences when viewed through the interstitium. Embracing unpredictability is vital for adaptability in life and health. Dr. Neil Theise Bio: Dr. Neil Theise is a medical doctor. He is a pathologist as well as professor of pathology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Through his scientific research, he has been a pioneer of adult stem cell plasticity and the anatomy of the human interstitium. Dr. Theise's studies in complexity theory have led to interdisciplinary collaborations in fields such as integrative medicine, consciousness studies, and science-religion dialogue. In this episode, Dr. Evan M. Rabinowitz, the founder of the Yao Shan Center for Chinese Medicine in Washington, DC, joins us for a conversation about acupuncture for menopause symptom treatment relief, the importance of treatment for the individual, how the body is an ecosystem and how holistic & Eastern medicine focus on addressing and balancing the entire system rather than just a single problematic issue.Acupuncture as a medical practice has existed for thousands of years and it used to be the predominant healing practice, yet the Western world still sees it as “alternative medicine.” Eastern medical practice is more than just sticking needles and mixing herbs together. Underneath lies a worldview that all living things are connected and that everything has its own course and cycle. This perspective brings a holistic approach to health and medicine, recognizing that changes in one part of the body or the external environment can cause seemingly unrelated symptoms. Dr. Rabinowitz has been in clinical practice for over 25 years, is a professor at Daoist Traditions College of Chinese Medical Arts in Asheville, NC and a lecturer at Georgetown University School of Medicine's Integrative Medicine Program in Washington, DC. He's the former Director of Chinese Herbal Medicine at the Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), where he helped create the University's Masters and Doctorate programs in East Asian Medicine during his eight-year tenure. He also taught and supervised Chinese herbal medicine at the Academy for Five Element Acupuncture in Gainesville, FL. He is a graduate of the George Washington University (B.A.), Traditional Acupuncture Institute (M.Ac.) and Maryland University of Integrative Health (D.Ac.). Dr. Rabinowitz maintains an active teaching schedule, offering continuing education for practitioners online and in-person across the US and internationally.Dr. Rabinowitz's goal is to see each person as unique and whole, and offer to them individualized, compassionate care for both chronic and acute pain. He has specialty training in gynecology seeing a broad range conditions throughout the lifecycle, including painful or irregular periods, fibroids and cysts (including PCOS), endometriosis and menopause related issues. In this episode, Dr. Rabinowitz discusses:The history and definition of acupunctureEastern medicine's approach to and treatment options for menopauseUnderstanding menopause from a holistic, empowering perspectiveFinding and receiving individualized treatment by a qualified, licensed practitionerDr. Rabinowitz also shares an empowering perspective for women: since puberty, our bodies have been working to sustain and bring new life. With menopause, our body's energies and systems shift to sustain and nourish just our own life. This is an important and significant time for a woman, and there's a unique power that comes with it.Tune in to this enlightening episode to gain a deeper understanding of acupuncture and how Eastern medicine offers a holistic, empowering approach to managing menopause and overall health.Connect with Dr. Evan M. I met SoeYun during the 2024 That's What She Said (TWSS) rehearsals. She was well spoken and full of good advice and thoughtful observations. Then came the humor. Her storytelling was second-to-none, sandwiched with takeaways and pearls of wisdom. Listen as this now midwesterner explains how she went from Seoul, Korea to the tiny town of Tolono! She retells what is was like for her family to immerse themselves into a majority white community, her "kicking a**" dad doing martial arts in the local park, being a certified acupuncturist in the Eastern Medicine modality as well as a hospice nurse within the conventional Western Medicine system, Florida living and finding love in an unexpected person in an unexpected place.
