On this episode of Club + Resort Talks, Rob Thomas speaks with Keith Scioli, Founder of GOLF LIVE. After the loss of a family member, Scioli developed a deep connection to the game of golf that led to the creation of an innovative solution for instructors and students alike. In 2019, Scioli was getting ready to go play in a tournament and developed a case of “the shanks.” Naturally, on a Friday night, at a public driving range, there was not an instructor to be found. Then it hit him; “Why can't I take a virtual golf lesson, now?” Scioli researched “golf instruction” and discovered that 4 million golfers in the United States take an estimated 22 million in-person golf lessons each year. That data turned out to be the lightbulb moment for him and he began to map out his “virtual solution.” Keith sent out 200 cold e-mails to PGA Members about his idea. Out of the 200 e-mails, Keith received two responses. One was from a PGA Instructor in Boston, Allan Belden. His comment? “I have no idea what you are really talking about, but it sounds interesting. If you want a guinea pig, here I am.” COVID-19 hit, and the world of golf instruction shut down. After months, Scioli started getting e-mails from these same PGA pros that had ignored him, “Hey, did you ever build that internet instruction thing?” COVID proved Keith's assumption was correct. Conducting live, remote golf lessons was no longer a crazy idea. In time, GOLF LIVE took form to what it is today; a patented, global solution that has been recognized as a Top Tech Golf Startup to Watch in 2024. · Live, Virtual Video Capture & Replay with Analysis · Customized Multi-Tier Memberships · Automatic Lesson Storage · Video Exchange · One-to-Many Live Stream Capability · A Comprehensive Communication and Business Platform Rob and Senior Editor Phil Keren also discussed a country club starting to use autonomous mowers, a resort that upgraded its food and beverage operations, and a golf course constructing a driving range with Power Tee boxes and Toptracer technology. Kings Creek Country Club in Rehoboth Beach, Del. has rolled out Husqvarna 550H Epos autonomous mowers for their golf course maintenance. The robotic mowers' advanced GPS technology and sensors allow them to navigate the golf course with precision and ensure that every inch of the course is perfectly manicured. There are also environmental benefits: By using robotic mowers, the club will lower carbon emissions and reduce noise pollution. The mowers operate on electric power, offering an eco-friendly contribution to a greener future. Fairfield (Tenn.) Glade Resort in March 2023 hired Bobby Jones Links to manage food and beverage operations. The goal was to improve financial performance and member engagement at Stonehenge Grille and four snack bars. After Bobby Jones Links took over, visitors and revenue increased at Stonehenge, and the member experience improved. “People recognize that the quality of food is better, and the menu offerings are better. It's been a very positive impact,” says Bruce Cox, one of the board members at Fairfield Glade. Windham Golf Course in North Windham, Conn. is reopening with a newly upgraded practice range that's teched out on 16 bays with Power Tee automatic tee boxes, as well as Toptracer's gamified technology. The golf course routing was modified to accommodate the new range, a process that lasted 20 months. “I'm hoping that with Power Tee, golfers go through the buckets quicker and then want to buy another one and also enjoy some of the new food and beverage offerings we've added,” says Tim DeVivo, the course's owner.

But he was surprised that he’d never heard of Tony before. In this episode we learn more about Erik’s teaching methods, how he encourages all his students to use the PerfectMotion App (episodes 771 & 772), and refutes many of the old wive’s tales that golfers are convinced are their own downfall. We’re on the countdown to celebrate 800 episodes of the Golf Smarter podcast on July 6, 2021. The Birdies & Bourbon team had a blast chatting with Pete Kelbel on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas, golf in Michigan and more. Pete Kelbel is a 3rd generation professional golfer, following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both of whom had distinguished careers as teaching professionals. From a very early age, Pete accompanied his dad to Harbor Point Golf Club where he would help out around the course with jobs such as picking up balls from the range and washing golf clubs. After a spell as a caddy, Pete started playing with ‘sawed-off’ clubs and by the age of 14 shot his first even-par round. Pete joined the Professional ranks whilst still at college and successfully completed his PGA Apprenticeship. Initially based in South Florida an opportunity arose at Walloon Lake Country Club in Petoskey, Michigan. After several years going back and forth between Florida and Michigan, Pete finally settled in Michigan and has now been the professional at Walloon Lake for just over 30 years. In addition to his full diary as a Teaching Professional, Pete is very passionate about junior golf and coaches both the girls and boys teams at Harbor Springs High School, taking great pride in their performances at school and then at college. Pete also writes for WomensGolf.com in which he analyses the swings of the top LPGA players. Walloon Lake Country Club Walloon Lake, located just to the South West of the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan in the United States, has a long and rich history. The Walloon Lake Country Club was established in 1904 with an initial 9 hole configuration. In 1925 the golf course was expanded to 18 holes after the purchase of adjoining land. In 1990, after finally securing approval from the members, the golf course expanded once again. Today, the 18 hole course provides an excellent test of golf with well-tended fairways and fast greens, with terrific views of Walloon Lake and the surrounding countryside. A regular visitor to the Club is the 8-time major winner Tom Watson, who as a youngster used to play at the club when his family spent the summer months at Walloon Lake. The Watson Cup, the annual invitational golf tournament at Walloon Lake, is named in his honor. In addition to the golf course, the Walloon Lake Country Club also offers: Professional Golf Lessons with Pete Kelbel Professional Tennis Tuition and 4 tennis courts A varied activity program for children including swimming and sailing Information from golfingherald.com. After a few months hibernation, The Golf Insiders is back kicking off Season 8 with show host Holly "G" Geoghegan and special guest Jay Golden, Winter Pines Golf Course in Winter Park, Fla., and PGA Instructor. Holly and Jay recap the week in golf that saw Jason Day win the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship and Tony Finau capture the Puerto Rico Open at Coco Beach. This week is the Shell Houston Open followed by the season's first major championship, The Masters. This week is the first of 5 majors on the LPGA, it's the ANA Inspiration. Will Perry, Founder and Creative Director of EVVUS is also in the studio this week. Will is going to be "ramping" up the social media platforms at The Golf Insiders. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, is the season's first guest. Holly asks Bob about Jason Day's back-to-back wins on the PGA Tour. Bob said it was a little strange that a couple weeks ago Day was asked about his slow start on the Tour this season. Next thing you know, he wins back to back events and everything is changed. Now it's six wins in his last 13 starts. Even though he almost withdrew from the WGC due to back issues, he gutted it out and won. Bob said that it sets up for a great Masters next week. Holly talked about Jordan Spieth and the naysayers comparing this year to last year and Jordan's response was that I already won this season and didn't last year. Last season Spieth lost in a playoff the week before the Masters and he went on to win it. Jay asks Bob about Spieth's putting this year so far as compared to last year, especially from 20-30 feet. Strokes gained tee to green last year was near or in the top 5 on the PGA Tour, so putting wasn't the only key last year. Bob feels that Jordan isn't striking the ball as well so far this year consistently as he did last year. Holly asks Bob about this format at the WGC compared to last year. Bob doesn't like the fact there are so many matches on Friday that really didn't matter. He thinks it might be better if there were more double elimination matches in the first couple of days. Once you get to Saturday, if good players have survived match play, then it's good TV. Holly asks Bob who he thinks really would benefit from going into the Masters and do well for the rest of the season. Bob said Spieth, Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed. But Bob feels the Rory McIlroy really needed to play this week to get in form for the first major. Jay asks Bob if there is any updates on Tiger Woods? Bob said no and he doesn't realistically think Tiger will not play in the Masters this year even though he has not shut the door and said No, he won't play. Holly tells the listeners about The Golf Auction hosting its annual global online auction that runs through April 10, 2016. Numerous memorabilia and collectibles will be auctioned off during this 10-day auction. This year's online auction will feature a number of finds of great historical significance. They include championship-used golf balls from Arnold Palmer's 1958 Masters win and Cary Middlecoff's 1955 Masters win, along with Ben Hogan's 1951 U.S. Open win and Ed Furgol's 1954 U.S. Open triumph. In addition, the Middlecoff and Furgol balls are autographed, and Middlecoff's also bears an inscription to Ralph Hutchison, the legendary golf pro who from 1947-1971 was the 18th green announcer at Augusta. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in from Rancho Mirage, California, the site of the ANA Inspiration, formerly the Dinah Shore. Holly and Steve talk about Lydia Ko and the success she's had so far this season. Steve said that Lydia said that she doesn't remember hitting the ball better than she is now. She used to "over cook" some of her drives and now she doesn't. Holly said that there is only one American in the top 10 on the money list so far this season, Stacy Lewis. Holly G asks Steve about Lewis and how she seems now since she recently go engaged. Steve thinks that inside the ropes he thinks she will do fine this year. Steve and Holly also talk about Michelle Wie who turned pro 10 years ago. Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in from the Shell Houston Open. Todd says that this is a big week for Jordan Spieth, who recently lost his #1 ranking to Jason Day. He says that Spieth has been playing well, but not great like he was before when he had his number one ranking. Holly talks with Todd about who might win the Masters. Jason Day, Adam Scott, Jordan Spieth will be talked about a lot this week prior to the Masters and Todd thinks that is a good thing for McIlroy who needs the green jacket to complete his career grand slam. Todd also feels that Phil has a really good shot at winning the Masters this year.

Match play competition between the USA and the International squad begins Wednesday night with Korea being 13 hours ahead of the USA in time. Jay Golden, Winter Pines Golf Course in Winter Park, Fla., and PGA Instructor, calls in to the show to talk about one of his students on the Web.com Tour earning his PGA Tour card for the 2016 season. Jay is the swing coach for Rob Oppenheim who suffered heartbreak in the 2014 Web.com Tour Championship finishing 26th and just missing his PGA Tour card by one spot. This year Oppenheim finished in the final spot, #25, and was the last player to earn his Tour card for the 2016 PGA Tour season. He was 28th when he finished and got in his car with his family and left. His phone started going crazy with all of the texts he was getting saying Congratulations, "You're No. 25." So he turned around and drove back to the golf course. Jay said that Rob is 35 and never quits. A Rollins College grad, Oppenheim lives in the Central Florida area. Jay has been working with Oppenheim for years now. Jay also caddied for Rob for half of the tournaments this year which is invaluable is a dream as a coach, Golden said. Jay said watching Rob hit on the driving range and then watching him play in the tournaments and how he reacted under pressure really helped Jay be a better coach for Rob. Jay's advice is that if you are going to be great at one thing in golf, be a great putter and then also be good at chipping. Mike Quinn, Managing Director Swingclick and former Sunshine Tour player in South Africa calls in to talk about South Africa and their golf programs. Mike said the weather is nice year round, the golf courses are great, and the competition is very tough and those are some of the reasons why the South Africa turns out several great players. Mike and Holly talk about some of the top South African players on the Tours now. Ernie Els, Louis Oosthuizen, Brandon Grace, and others. Holly also asks Mike about how match play is different than stroke play? Does it benefit the International Squad? Why do you think that the USA does so well in the Presidents Cup as opposed to the Ryder Cup? Mike talks about Swingclick a swing training aid that helps with your rhythm, timing, tempo with an audible click at each of the three major points of your swing: backswing, impact and follow through. Australian Dean Hernden, professional caddie for LPGA player In Gee Chun who won the 2015 U.S. Women's Open, calls in live from South Korea to talk about the President's Cup among other things in golf. Dean is an Orlando resident. He said that an advantage for the US team is that they know one another a lot better than some of the International players do. There are 5 rookies on each team. Holly asks Dean about Jason Day a fellow Australian. Dean said that Jason is a very humble guy. Steve Eubanks, Global Golf Post, calls in to wrap up the hour of intelligent golf talk. Holly asks Steve about the President's Cup and the players on each team. It's never 1, 2 or 3 players on your team that cost you the tournament, it's the 9th, 10th and 11th players on each team. Holly reads what Jordan Spieth said recently about the differences between the Presidents Cup teams and the Ryder Cup ... it seems that there is a bit of a difference in the USA's team rooms for the Presidents Cup as compared to the Ryder Cup teams. Spieth said that the US is confident and somewhat cocky in the Presidents Cup setting and not as relaxed for the Ryder Cup. Steve and Holly talk about South Korean PGA player Sang Moon Bae who is playing in his last event has to take a break and serve his time in the military as do all South Korean men.
