It's a feat that needs no introduction. As we approach the 25th anniversary of Tiger Woods' four-major run from the 2000 US Open through the 2001 Masters, a new book from former Sports Illustrated and Golf Magazine editor Kevin Cook unearths never-before-seen nuggets from this historic stretch. Cook joins host Tom Coyne to discuss The Tiger Slam, Cook's moment-by-moment chronicle that features interviews with Stevie Williams, Mark O'Meara, Butch Harmon and many others. They relive the indelible images of the Slam, including Tiger's landslide victory at Pebble and his nailbiting duel with Bob May at Valhalla, but the true treasures lie in details that have remained hidden until now. You'll learn what Tiger said to Phil walking off 13 tee at Augusta, why his team nearly scuttled his “Sportsman of the Year” dinner at the last minute, and which major Tiger played using only one tee. (Hint: It was the same one in which a nude exotic dancer paraded across the 18th green. Try finding that on a YouTube rewatch.) Kevin Cook is a former senior editor of Sports Illustrated and former editor in chief of Golf Magazine. In addition to a long career in the sports periodicals industry, Kevin has also published a number of books, the most well-known of which is Tommy's Honor, chronicling the fascinating life of Young Tom Morris during golf's early years in and around St Andrews. Cook's newest book, The Tiger Slam: The Inside Story of the Greatest Golf Ever Played details Tiger's unforgettable four-major stretch from the 2000 US Open to the 2001 Masters. GOLF Magazine came out with their annual top 100 courses in the United States list this week. We will discuss many of the courses and ask the question... would Augusta National be in the top 10 if it wasn't for the Masters? Pine Valley again is number one on this years list and we will talk about what sets it apart. A pair of Minnesota courses made the list with both Interlachen and White Bear Yacht Club in the top 100. We take a deep dive into which courses we think are overrated and which are underrated. We will talk a little pro golf as well this week as both the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour are winding down their fall seasons and there are tour cards on the line. In Part 1 of Episode 53, I'm joined by Super Agent Leigh Steinberg and Buffalo Dunes Director of Instruction Jason Hase. I'm excited to be joined by one of the most prominent figures in the history of sports and a member of our Thursday Night Tailgate Guest Hall of Fame, Leigh Steinberg. Leigh has been a regular guest for over 11 years, with his first appearance dating back to August 1, 2013. We'll be diving into the massive surge in money within the world of sports, from skyrocketing player contracts to the impact of NIL deals in college athletics. We'll also discuss something that was once unimaginable: sports leagues and teams being sponsored by gambling sites, as well as Las Vegas becoming home to multiple major sports franchises. Leigh is a great friend, and I'm thrilled to have him on the show again. Following Leigh, I'll be joined by Jason Hase, Director of Instruction at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City, Kansas. Buffalo Dunes was recently recognized as the 8th best municipal course in the country by Golf Magazine, and Jason will share what makes the course so special, including the ongoing renovations and the amazing community volunteers helping with the project. We'll also talk about the fantastic junior golf program he's running. Jason will be joining me about 30 minutes into the show, and I can't wait for you to hear from him.
In Part 2 of Episode 51, I'm joined by two of Golf Tips Magazine's Top 25 Instructors, Jon Decker and Tom Stickney, for long-overdue conversations packed with invaluable insights. Jon Decker, the 2015 Southern Ohio Teacher of the Year and Director of Instruction at the Medallion Club, shares stories from his time with legendary mentor Phil Rogers, a memorable encounter involving Rogers and Gary Player, and strategies for overcoming the mental challenges that can sabotage your game. He also gives us a sneak peek into his new book, Fairways to Heaven...One Shot at a Time. Tom Stickney, a Top 100 Teacher by Golf Magazine and a Top 50 International Instructor, brings his expertise to the table as we explore the differences between old-school and new-school teaching methods, the debate between speed training and letting the club do the work, and tips for golfers over 50 looking to increase their driving distance. Tom also offers his take on how to fix the over-the-top swing and shares his perspective on the current state of the PGA Tour.
It's a milestone show, and we thought we would do something fun to celebrate. Instead of a best of, or a highlight show from our 100 episodes, we take on a classic list from one of golf's most respected journalists, with a twist. On multiple occasions, George Peper of Golf Magazine produced a top 100 bucket list of golf events to fill your golf life with. We have modified it slightly to be more relevant to us as Canadians, and we run through the list to see where we stand with it while sharing a few related stories. Jeff Marsh has been en fuego for the entirety of 2023 as I've seen it - but with all great stories, there's a lot more to it. Publishing his first periodic photo journal, "Golf is Art", it was a treat to hear stories that will appear in the book firsthand. Jeff has an unusually deep understanding of the game from a photographers lens having caddied on the PGA TOUR for Ryan Moore, running the caddie program at Chambers Bay, and leading the creative branding for TRUE Linkswear. He has been commissioned by Golf Digest, USGA, Bandon Dunes, Sand Valley, Dream Golf Resorts, Streamsong, Golfers Journal, Linksoul, Vincero Watches, Seattle Seahawks, Chambers Bay, Golf Magazine, 8am Golf, Rams Hill, Pebble Beach and many more. The type of grass used on golf courses plays a significant role in determining the overall playing conditions and aesthetics of the course. Golf course grasses are carefully selected based on their ability to withstand heavy foot traffic, adapt to various climates, provide consistent ball roll, and maintain a visually appealing appearance. There are primarily two types of grass used on golf courses: warm-season grasses and cool-season grasses, each with distinct characteristics and advantages. This week Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine's Top100 Teachers, and co-host John Ashton explain the differences and how to approach playing on each type. Warm-season grasses, such as Bermuda grass, Zoysia grass, and seashore paspalum, thrive in tropical and subtropical climates. They are known for their excellent tolerance to heat, drought, and wear. Warm-season grasses have a dense growth pattern, allowing golf balls to sit on top of the grass, resulting in better ball control. These grasses exhibit excellent recovery after damage and provide a consistent playing surface throughout the year. However, they tend to go dormant and turn brown during winter months in cooler regions. Cool-season grasses, including Bentgrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, and Ryegrass, are predominantly used in temperate regions. They flourish in cooler temperatures and are resilient against low temperatures, making them ideal for regions with cold winters. Cool-season grasses provide a lush, green appearance and exceptional ball roll, contributing to a smoother and faster putting surface. However, they may struggle in hot, humid climates and require more water and maintenance compared to warm-season grasses. The choice of grass type also depends on the specific areas of the golf course. Fairways, tees, and roughs often feature different grass types to cater to their distinct needs. For example, Bentgrass is commonly used on putting greens due to its fine texture and ability to be closely mowed for faster green speeds. Bermuda grass is often found on fairways due to its durability and ability to recover from divots and traffic. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards using a blend of grasses on golf courses. This approach combines the strengths of different grass species, such as the durability of warm-season grasses with the smoothness of cool-season grasses, to achieve optimal playing conditions throughout the year. Ultimately, the choice of grass on a golf course depends on factors such as climate, maintenance resources, and golfer preferences. By carefully selecting and maintaining the appropriate grass types, golf course superintendents aim to provide players with a visually appealing and enjoyable playing experience, while also ensuring the long-term health and sustainability of the course.
Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine's Top 100 teachers, gives you 2 shots to use around the greens today. They are both almost magic when it comes to improving your short game. First is the Hinge & Thump shot, And the second he calls the Firm Handed Scrape. Both of these shots describe the motion used in executing them and both can be used with many different clubs for many different scenarios. But what is for sure is that once you have both of these shots in your arsenal your short game will improve seriously and quickly.
