This month we tackle a topic we haven't talked much about...Forced Retirements. Anthony Napolitano had a very successful career in the high-tech world. Then he was laid off not once, but twice by two big corporations right around when he was 50 years old. That was two years ago, and since then he has plunged into the world of early retirement with great enthusiasm, (which is an understatement.) His friends joke that he doesn't have a "Type A personality," he has a "Type-Anthony personality". Anthony has an analytical mind and devised a personalized Life Retirement Plan. He bases his plan on the four pillars of Health, Mindset, Purpose and Relationships. He even grades himself every year. He was a star baseball player in high school and then went on to play four years of college division 1 baseball at Loyola-Marymount College. So in (un)retirement, Anthony is a natural as a high school coach. He loves being the assistant coach for the girls volleyball team. He also works as a wine educator at a local winery in his tiny mountain town of Julian, CA, just outside of San Diego. He does a little bit of everything at the winery, from picking grapes to hosting wine tasting events. You will love Anthony. He's full of wonder and personality. Although Carl points out that he is the star of the podcast, Anthony clearly steals this month's show. • More about Anthony Napolitano: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anthonynapolitano • Anthony's Blog "For the Napos": https://forthenapos.com • Episode Content: https://pickleballmediahq.com/blog/anthony-napolitano-interview-rorced-into-early-retirement-and-now-a-renaissance-man • Sponsored by How to Retire and Not Die: https://garysirak.com/how-to-retire-and-not-die • Sponsored by Capital Advantage: https://capitaladvantage.com/promotion/retirement-planning-guide • I Used to be Somebody World Tours: https://pickleballmediahq.com/tour/all-tours • Subscribe to I Used to be Somebody newsletter: https://pickleballmediahq.com/contact/subscribe

How could we talk about Naples and not about the pastries? After all, this is why you listen to Only A Bag! After a few thousand years of outside rule, one of the few good things (which is a weird way of saying, "Thanks for leaving behind some of your food when you ruled over us with an iron fist.") that came from it is the introduction of pastries. Graffa from the Austrian krapfen, baba from the French (and earlier Polish) baba, and sfogliatella from the nuns of Conci die Marini and then through a pastry chef who purchased the recipe and the rights to sell it (which is far more wholesome!). And, of course, like any other sweet thing over the course of history, someone looked at it and asked the age-old question, "Yes, but can it also be fried?". With that, we introduce you to the wonderful world of Neapolitan pastries! Il nuovo singolo dell'artista torinese è un inno mistico all'amore come spazio sacro dove rinascere. Secondo estratto dall'album “Una nuova luce sul mondo”.
When President Trump deployed the military to Los Angeles in June, former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano called it an “abuse of presidential power.” Napolitano, who is also the former governor of Arizona, told MSNBC that to federalize the national guard over California Governor Gavin Newsom's objections was “simply outrageous.” During Napolitano's time at DHS, she beefed up border security and increased deportations while also spearheading the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) initiative. Now director of the new Institute for Security and Governance at UC Berkeley, Napolitano joins Commonwealth Club World Affairs to talk about the current administration's border crackdown, criticism of ICE tactics, and what it all means for immigration policy, civil liberties and the economy. We'll also hear from Napolitano, the former president of the University of California, about Trump's efforts to reshape higher education. Learn more about your ad choices. On the evening of November 30, 1989, Linda Napolitano awoke in her lower Manhattan apartment to find herself unable to move. She felt as though she was in the presence of other individuals, then she began to lift off her bed and was transported, as though by unseen hands, out her bedroom window several floors up, before being abducted into an unidentified aircraft. Linda Napolitano is one of countless people who claim to have been abducted and experimented on by extraterrestrials; however, she is one of very few whose abduction was witnessed by nearly two dozen strangers in one of the busiest cities in the world. According to ufologist Budd Hopkins, Napolitano's abduction has produced irrefutable evidence of extraterrestrial life, but more importantly, he believes Linda's case is proof of a larger and more insidious plan to eradicate humanity altogether. The Manhattan Alien Abduction case is among a small number of heavily researched and well-documented cases of supposed alien abduction in American history, but it is not without its critics. In the years following Linda's abduction, a dramatic story has unfolded, pitting skeptics and believers against one another in surprising and deeply personal ways.Thank you to the Amazing Dave White (of BRING ME THE AXE PODCAST) for research and writing assistance!ReferencesHopkins, Budd. 1996. Johnette Napolitano was born on September 22, 1957, in Los Angeles, California. From a young age, she showed signs of being musically gifted—learning songs by ear and absorbing the sounds of everything from show tunes to soul. Her powerful voice and introspective writing would later become the soul of a band that defined a piece of the alternative rock era. But long before that, she was a quiet observer of the world, turning emotion into melody and poetry. In the early ‘80s, Napolitano co-founded the band Dream 6 with guitarist James Mankey. By 1986, they had changed their name to Concrete Blonde, thanks to a suggestion from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. It was a perfect fit: hard and soft, beautiful and brutal—just like their music. Johnette's voice, smoky and commanding, cut through the clutter of the decade's pop polish. The band quickly developed a cult following with their blend of post-punk edge and lyrical depth.Concrete Blonde broke into the mainstream with their 1990 album Bloodletting, which captured the darker tones of Napolitano's songwriting. Its hit single “Joey”—a heartbreak anthem about addiction and love—became a signature track, reaching the Billboard Top 20. With its aching delivery and confessional lyrics, “Joey” made Napolitano a powerful voice for emotional realism in rock, and Bloodletting earned gold certification. After the band's initial breakup in 1994, Napolitano didn't slow down. She formed the duo Pretty & Twisted, collaborated with punk icon Holly Vincent in Vowel Movement, and later pursued solo projects. Her solo work—especially the Sketchbook series and the 2007 album Scarred—showcased her knack for raw storytelling, shifting between haunted ballads and fierce rock with the same honesty that marked her earliest work.Concrete Blonde reunited several times over the years, releasing Group Therapy in 2002 and Mojave in 2004, both reflecting a matured sound while staying true to their roots. They toured again from 2010 to 2012, reigniting their bond with longtime fans. Napolitano's performances during these years were filled with the same fire that first drew listeners in—proof that her voice, both literal and artistic, remained as vital as ever.Life in the Desert and Creative LegacyToday, Napolitano lives in Joshua Tree, where she rescues horses, creates visual art, and continues to write music on her own terms. She's contributed songs to film soundtracks and occasionally releases new work, often quietly and independently. Fiercely original and unapologetically herself, Johnette Napolitano has never chased fame—only truth. And in doing so, she's built a body of work that resonates deeply with those who've loved, lost, and lived out loud.@ConcreteBlondeOfficialWebsite.com

For many warehouse companies and distribution centers, dealing with logistics, and facilities, and workforce development can be a challenge. That's where The TAC Group comes in. “We're a supply chain operations consulting firm,” Grace Napolitano, the company's principal and business development executive, told the CBIA BizCast. “We are focused on operational excellence within distribution and fulfillment centers.” Napolitano and her husband Zack started the company in 2023 after he spent his career working with FedEx and other distribution companies. That experience included working with companies to implement new management systems. “He really kind of fell in love with that area and working with different companies to help with their operational excellence,” Napolitano said. “He had so much care for the people that worked for him. He really cared about what their life story was, not just how they could perform for him and for the operation.” Napolitano had a background in business operations, sales and marketing. She previously worked in the media industry including as publisher and lead national ad director for the Chicago Sun Times. “So, I said, ‘If you trust what I can do, I trust what you can do,' and The TAC Group was born,” she said. Napolitano said the company focuses on helping businesses with third-party logistics, facility layout and design, leadership development. But she said they are most proud of their labor optimization programs. “We're very passionate about making sure people enjoy coming to work and not just being kind of like a racehorse being whipped go faster, go faster,” she said. She added their goal is to give them “the why behind what we're doing.” She highlighted the high-paced environment of working in a distribution center. “Distribution is a grind,” she said. “It's 24/7—it's multiple shifts. There are reports coming in at 3 am, there are holidays being missed, there's birthdays being missed. “With The TAC group, it's really our focus to connect with the frontline workers on a personal level.” Napolitano said that workforce retention is a significant challenge for distribution centers. She said when workers leave for a different company, it costs an average of $8,000 to replace and train them. “If we could just put that investment into coaching and training the managers to work with their frontline workers, to make them feel like they're part of the organization, that they're valued and that they matter—that really will help the businesses keep jobs here in Connecticut,” Napolitano said. Napolitano said a big part of their work is to train managers to work with and support their employees. She added many of those managers were previously frontline workers themselves, and don't necessarily know how to coach and guide other workers. “We're giving them that skill set to be great leaders and great managers of the next generation of managers and executives,” she said. T&D World's Faces of the Future department highlights up-and-comers in the line trade. For this week's episode, we are highlighting Vincent Napolitano, an apprentice for Ameren Illinois and a competitor at the International Lineman's Rodeo. To prepare for the International Lineman's Rodeo in 2024, he trained with other apprentices to take practice tests and test his skills alongside the journeymen on the training grounds. In the future, he wants to stay out in the field, and he says the crews he works with are like a family. Send us a textWarning: This episode may cause sudden urges to buy wine, a vibrator, and a ticket to the nearest small town. We're getting down with Stephanie Napolitano author of Fall from Grace and baby, it's not just the characters who are getting emotionally wrecked and absolutely railed. We talk missionary magic, pool table filth (yes, that scene), and why dirty talk is a love language. Stephanie spills on writing while her life was falling apart, letting her characters finish inside (and out), and why there's zero room for shame in a steamy love story.Come for the trauma. Stay for the trench coat. You've been warned.FYI...We get into:
Linda Napolitano afirmó haber sido secuestrada por extraterrestres en su departamento de Manhattan en una noche oscura. Su relato, repleto de detalles perturbadores, generó controversia en el ámbito OVNI, especialmente porque la apoyó uno de los principales ufólogos de la época. Supuestamente hubo testigos del secuestro, pero sus nombres nunca se revelaron. Hasta el día de hoy el caso se mantiene como referente en estudios de abducciones.
Kinsella on Liberty Podcast: Episode 457. I had been meaning to talk to my old friend Sheldon Richman, of the Libertarian Institute and TGIF column, about his own IP Odyssey, as he's always been great on this issue, (( My IP Odyssey; as quoted in “Your failed business model is not my problem”; Sheldon Richman, “Patent Nonsense," IP Debate Breaks Out at FEE. Others, e.g. Richman, The Articles of Confederation Versus the Constitution. )) and many others. At the same time I had been talking to André Simoni of Brazil about some questions he had about applying my/Rothbard's title-transfer contract theory to some questions he had about interest payments on student loans and other contracts, usury, and so on. I had thought of talking to André and Sheldon separately but decided to combine them, partly because I confused André's topic with a discussion I had also been having at the same time with Galambosian Brian Gladish about IP and Galambos. (( On Galambos, see the following. On Gladish, see the next note. Galambos and Other Nuts; The Galambosians strike back; “Around this time I met the Galambosian.”; Was Galambos an IP Thief?; Galambos the Crank; Shades of Galambos: Man tries to copyright his name; Rothbard and Galambosians. )) Libertopia, San Diego, Oct. 11, 2012: Anthony Gregory, Kinsella, Roderick Long, Sheldon Richman. (I may talk to Gladish later about Galambos and IP.) (( Gladish on Galambos at ASC; his comments at: Have You Changed Your Mind About Intellectual Property?; Galambos and Other Nuts; Mises on Intellectual Property; Why Objectivists Hate Anarchy (Hint: IP). )) We touched on a number of topics; see the summary of our discussion points by Grok, below. https://youtu.be/7vrIz8cv2Bw Of relevance: Stephan Kinsella, “The Title-Transfer Theory of Contract,” Papinian Press Working Paper #1 (Sep. 7, 2024) Napolitano on Health-Care Reform and the Constitution: Is the Commerce Clause Really Limited? and On Constitutional Sentimentalism (re Richman's point about the interstate commerce clause); see also his comments about federal tax power in Randy Barnett's “Federalism Amendment”–A Counterproposal; and related posts The Walmart Question, or, the Unsupported Assertions of Left-Libertarianism Ep. 382 Sheldon Richman Says Corporate Isn't a Dirty Word, Bob Murphy Show Four questions for “anti-capitalist” libertarians (Carpio)/Is Capitalism Something Good? Sheldon writes "TGIF" weekly, rooted in his Freeman editorship (late 1990s-~2012-13). 2:19 - 9:14: Sheldon, officially retired but freelancing, rejects "left-libertarian" as a tribal label (early 2000s usage),
