The Future of the European Tour and its schedule with John Huggan

The Shotgun Start

This Friday episode begins with some reaction to Phil's indignant tweets about the news of the USGA rule on driver length, and a not-so-subtle threat at his own PGA Tour for adopting it. Then Brendan and Andy are joined by European correspondent for Golf Digest (among many other things), the legendary John Huggan to discuss a variety of topics from across the pond. First, they ask John about his close friendship with and memories of Renton Laidlaw, the voice of the European Tour who died this week. Then they banter on the “strategic alliance” and what it means for the Euro Tour, its players, and its future schedule. Europe's Ryder Cup future, both the roster and its captains, is discussed. They close with some wildly amusing tales about John's playing days. There's plenty of historical and big picture thoughts on the game mixed in as well so many thanks to John for his time.

519: How to make your Business Adaptable

Hey y'all, Brent Perry here with Business on Purpose. The question on the table today, how to make your business adaptable? And I guess before we dive into this question we have to take a small step back and ask ourselves… What does it mean to be adaptable? And is it important that we are building a business that is in fact adaptable?  An article written by Martin Reeves in the Harvard Business Review cited that Adaptability is the new competitive advantage for businesses.  “Instead of being really good at doing some particular thing, companies must be really good at learning how to do new things.” They go on to describe some characteristics of companies that are willing to adapt.  “Those that thrive are quick to read and act on signals of change. They have worked out how to experiment rapidly, frequently, and economically—not only with products and services, but also with business models, processes, and strategies.” As I am recording this, the 43rd Ryder cup of Golf is underway! It's a fun golf event played every 2 years between the US and the European team. An article in Golf Digest had this to say about the Ryder Cup,  “One of the reasons many—most—players crave playing in the Ryder Cup is because it is unique in that you are playing for your teammates, for your country... It isn't, as Koepka points out, just about you. In the week-to-week tournaments that go on around the world, including the four majors, you succeed or you fail. Period. It is why golf is so difficult mentally. It's all on you. But the Ryder Cup is different. At the end of the weekend, individual records really don't matter very much. All that matters is the team result.”  The best Ryder Cup teams in history have all been able to adapt.  If you and your company are going to be able to adapt, you have to be ready to adjust to new conditions.  But how do we do that? I am glad you asked that question. We have ideas on how you can become a company that doesn't get left behind as you continue to adapt to the ever-changing environment.    Evaluate your competitors' strategies and products Utilize a wide range of resources Collaborate with employees Test new product adaptations without fear of failure Utilize technology, virtual environments, and online communities Utilize your business coach   Thanks for listening.  If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our Podcast, and/or our YouTube channel.

The Women's British Open is this weekend at famed Carnoustie so we brought in a true Scotsman, John Huggan, to talk about it. An up-front caveat, though, we spend more time discussing golf at large than we do Carnoustie, because in John's words, there's just not that much going on. So come for Tron and Randy discussing news of the day in the first part of the episode, and stay for John Huggan discussing his wider thoughts on the game of golf in the second part. You can find John writing at Golf Digest, and on twitter @johnhuggan. Enjoy!

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 18, 2021 is: parry • PAIR-ee • verb 1 : to ward off (something, such as a weapon or blow) 2 : to evade (something, such as a question) by an adroit answer Examples: "Sevilla forward Youssef En-Nesyri had a clearer opportunity midway through the first half but his header was blocked by a low save from Spain keeper Unai Simon, who thwarted the Moroccan again before half-time, parrying his shot and then scurrying back to prevent the ball from trickling over the line." — ESPN, 3 May 2021 "When someone referred to Whan as 'Boss,' he parried, 'Not yet.' But he was just being literal. Whan's first day as CEO was still a few weeks away, but the announcement on Feb. 17 that he would take the job had already sent a bolt of lightning through an organization that dates to 1894…." — Alan Shipnuck, Golf Digest, 9 June 2021 Did you know? Parry (which is used in fencing, as well as in other applications) was borrowed from French parer, meaning "to ward off" or "to avert," and may specifically have come directly from the plural imperative form of that word, parez. The French likely borrowed the word from Italian parare, meaning "to prepare, adorn, avert, shield, keep out." That word's source is Latin parāre, meaning "to supply, provide, make ready," an ancestor to many familiar English words, among them prepare, repair, emperor, separate, and apparatus.
