In this episode, we talk with Dr. Tim McMahon, the director of Dept. of Defense DNA Operations, about how DPAA partners with the Armed Forces Medical Examiner System's DNA Identification Laboratory to use DNA as one of the most important lines of evidence with which we make identifications of the missing.
Video Story from a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) recovery mission in Papua New Guinea, September 10, 2024. This mission sought to recover missing personnel from World War II, of which there are approximately 72,000 unaccounted for.

DPAA personnel worked together with short term individual augmentees from U.S. Army and Air Force units; 1st and 10th Cavalry Regiment, 91st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 786th Civil Engineering Squadron, 86th Dental Squadron, 606th Air Control Squadron, 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs, 52nd Medical Group. All mission personnel combined their knowledge and skills to advance progress in achieving the fullest possible accounting of missing personnel during the more than 60-day recovery mission. There are approximately 72,000 missing personnel from World War II in the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the Republic of Ireland and the surrounding European and Mediterranean area.
