Rob Couture welcomes two historic leaders of the VFW in this inspiring episode of #StillServing: Commander-in-Chief Carol Whitmore and VFW Auxiliary National President Lois Callahan. Together, they share their personal journeys, their priorities for the year ahead, and their vision for how the VFW and Auxiliary can continue to strengthen advocacy and support for veterans and their families. Whitmore reflects on her decades of Army service, her milestone election as the first female Commander-in-Chief, and her focus on advocacy, service officers, and the POW/MIA mission. This week, the NK News podcast explores the New York Times' recent revelations about a 2019 U.S. Navy SEAL mission on North Korea's coast. The operation reportedly aimed at installing surveillance equipment but went awry, resulting in the death of unarmed North Koreans and raising escalation risks. Mark Sauter, a former U.S. Army soldier with decades of experience investigating POW/MIA issues and covert operations, joins the podcast to explain what allegedly happened, why it may have gone sideways and how these events echo earlier covert U.S. and South Korean infiltrations stretching back to the Korean War. Sauter is the founder and president of the POW Investigative Project and author of “American Trophies.” He has been investigating American POWs for almost 30 years and previously served as a soldier in the U.S. Army, including as a guard post commander at the Demilitarized Zone. Something happened to America — and to American conservatism — in the early 1990s: an unspooling, a coarsening, a turn from substance to symbol and from narrative to fragment; prevailing political myths ceased to make sense or have purchase, and nothing sufficiently capacious or legible emerged to replace them, leaving only a dank, foggy climate of conspiracy, bellicosity, and despair. Victorious in the Cold War, America was supposed to be riding high; instead the whole country was experiencing a crisis of confidence. Why? What happened? And did we ever get over it — or are we still somehow stuck in the "long 1990s?" No one is better equipped to tease out answers to these questions than our great friend John Ganz, whose riveting new book is called When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s. With his characteristic wit and panache, John guides us through a lively discussion of: Sam Francis's middle American radicalism; Pat Buchanan's "culture war" speech; Ross Perot and POW-MIA; Carroll Quigley's influence on Bill Clinton; John Gotti's appeal; and how these figures, and this era, prepared the way for Donald Trump. It's a barnburner, folks! Even though it was a shortened week due to the holiday, we've been here, present and fully available. I mean, I was drunk last night for my birthday and these notes will be somewhat logical so we could only expect the best from the studio crew, right? Today's Daily Discussion Topic was spearheaded by a woman who has a sleep issue (which sounds like us as in, we don't get enough.) Kelly Knipes, a 42 year old woman suffers from parasomnia, which causes her to do things like shop in her sleep, give scammers her financial details and take extra meds (are we sure this isn't Angi?) In fact, this disorder has caused her to spend $3,800 buying a full sized basketball court, cans of paint, playground equipment and hundreds of Haribo candies. While everyone else finds it funny, this is clearly an issue. Well, in Angi's case, this is an exploit as she is going to now start blaming things she spends money on that Jay the Straight gets mad about on this disorder. Still, this was something Angi didn't know about and so it inspired her to ponder a question. What is something the roadies learned embarrassingly late in life? Some examples pulled including things like someone thinking that roadside memorials were actually graves. A 27 year old thought "hump day" was the day people had sex and not the middle of the week. Another didn't realize a quart was a quarter of a gallon. A 53 year old didn't realize Rhode Island was not just an island. Another found out pumpkin spice doesn't taste like pumpkins. Another learned how to say Yosemite and always saying it "yo sem ite." In 10th grade, someone yelled out "I love necrophilia" after learning about necromancy. For the person who didn't know carrot cake was called that cause it had carrots in it, it definitely was not because it had carrot doodles on top. "POW MIA" is Prison of War Missing in Action and definitely not "powmia." Lastly, someone assumed fly fishing was done out of a plane or helicopter. To be fair, this does sound a bit amazing though. Right then, moving on to our own ding dongs. Marris wanted a birthday suit when he was a kid because he thought it was an actual birthday outfit and not swinging dong. Though he is willing to wear his birthday suit for us in studio on his birthday, it falls on a weekend this year (boo!) Marris also once almost killed an allergic friend because he did not know bell peppers were used to make paprika. Mind you, Angi just learned that in that moment so there you go. Speaking of Angi ... I just, this one was special. She didn't realize the last four digits of a Social Security number was your birth order and that it varied by state. This is why she and Jay the Straight have the same last four birth digits (crazy) and then she went and just said them out loud on air.... She also did not realize that hippos were extremely violent until like two weeks ago. Great, now that we're a bit smarter (not really,) let's go to the Request Line and the roadie add-ins. Thomas' always goes to the wrong side of a gas station whenever in a new vehicle and took forever to realize the arrow on the dash pointed to the correct pump side. Kevin didn't realize that every gas station has a green handle for diesel aside from BP which almost led to a costly mistake. Raquel was on a date and trying to be fancy and so she ordered a "virgin" Arnold Palmer. Elizabeth took forever to know that driving with the interior light on is not illegal. Larry has called in to win tickets to things without realizing there was a topic to discuss or a game to play to actually get them aka selective hearing. David knew someone who died from going "cold turkey" and assumed it meant they died from eating cold turkey. If you are looking for more roadie thoughts or have your own, hit up our Facebook group (Angi Taylor Show) and drop us a comment.

As we celebrate 3 years of the show, we decided to take a look at one of our favorite eras of American film - the 1970's. We're specifically looking at the Vietnam Anti-War Movement as captured by a fictional film and a documentary; Milestones (1975) and F.T.A. (1972). On this episode we discuss Francine Parker's documenatry, F.T.A. (1972). Once again, we're also joined by special guest Jim Miller. As we celebrate Parker's film as well as Jane Fonda's career, Jim helps us to tie together alot of threads: IPC Production Comany - from F.T.A. (1972) to Coming Home (1978) to 9 to 5 (1980) The Spitting Image: Myth, Memory and the Legacy of Vietnam by Jerry Lembcke The propaganda of the POW/MIA flag Jane Fonda's Workout Videos The Rambo film franchise In F.T.A., Parker's camera follows the 1971 anti-war, vaudville-style show as the performers entertain over 64,000 troops stationed in Okinawa, Japan, the Philippines, and Hawaii. A few years ago, Lee Ellis noticed that he and the other POWs who made it home from Vietnam were outperforming the general population in the area of romantic longevity. He looked into the reasons why that might be true, and then he published his findings in a book called Captured By Love: Inspiring True Romance Stories from Vietnam POWs. Happy Valentine's Day.

In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are once again joined by Dillon Nelson with more stories about him and his cadaver dog, Jakoby. Dillon and Jakoby have continued to train and have been called out for searches on missing people. He comes on to tell us some of his most recent stories. The first story Dillon talks about was when he and Jakoby were called out by the Georgia Task Force to search for a missing guy. They started the search based on footage from someone's trail camera. Another call out was requested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (GBI). This was in regards to a missing person. When they got on scene, they came upon pitbulls that were chained up at the house. These dogs were not happy to see Dillon, nor were they too thrilled to see Jakoby. The next story was a search for a missing body that was allegedly buried in and around a chicken coop. Next, we talk about a search for a missing person that had been missing for the last 35 years. Dillon talks about a goal that he has been working toward, getting over to Vietnam to help find some of our POW/MIA from the war. We cut into one more story where he and Jakoby received a letter of appreciation directly from the GBI for a search of a missing person that led to Dillon having to fight a dog and the GBI making an arrest! Episode 99: I'm excited to share with you a special episode of the Kankakee Podcast that I recorded in collaboration with the Kankakee County Museum. The episode is all about Rolling Thunder, a national organization that raises awareness about the POW/MIA issue and helps veterans. During the annual Rhubarb Festival this Sunday, May 21st, a special ceremony for three soldiers who were missing in action in Vietnam and were residents of Kankakee County will take place. To learn more about this organization and the ceremony, I interviewed Dennis "LT", a member of Rolling Thunder Illinois Chapter 1. In the episode, Dennis shares the history of Rolling Thunder and its mission to help veterans and their families. We also discuss the efforts to recover remains of missing soldiers and provide closure for families. Dennis talks about his experience as a Vietnam veteran and the challenges he faced when he returned home. He also shares how organizations like Rolling Thunder helped him and other veterans cope with their experiences. The interview concludes with Dennis expressing his gratitude towards the Kankakee County Museum and Veronica Featherston for their support in organizing the ceremony for the missing soldiers. He encourages people to attend the ceremony and learn about the meaning behind the POW/MIA table that will be displayed. Captured by Love shares the real love stories of 20 Vietnam War POWs. Some had wives who started a movement that changed American foreign policy. Others came home and had to start over, while five single men met the loves of their lives. Despite their unique differences, all these couples have been happily married 40 to 65 years. You'll be swept up into some extraordinary tales such as: • Carole boldly gave her husband's POW-MIA bracelet to John Wayne―he wore it for years! • Pan Am stewardess Suzy wore a bracelet for POW Bill Bailey, whom she did not know. But she prayed for him daily, and miraculously met and married him when he came home. • After eight years in prison, one POW said to his wife in his first phone call upon his release, “Hi Jane. It's Tarzan.” You will laugh and cry when you learn why. Former POW Lee Ellis and love expert Greg Godek take you on a dramatic journey of faithfulness, passion, excitement, resilience, and practical love lessons from these couples.
