U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Lee Hartley, the assistant adjutant general for the Tennessee Air National Guard, delivers a message to airmen at the 118th Wing in Nashville, TN, on April 5, 2025. The purpose of his visit was to reinforce embracing the warrior ethos mindset as we continue to collaborate, not only domestically, but on the international level, to defend our homeland. Wearing MOPP (Mission-Oriented Protective Posture) gear as the symbol of the Tennessee Air National Guard's commitment to camaraderie, purpose, and the mission set that defines who we are, Hartley said that “we need to be exceptional at adapting fast … we need to be pretty good at going places and figuring it out quickly.” Upholding high standards of excellence to ensure mission success is what drives our ability to pivot and execute. “In our culture, what we encourage when we talk about the expeditionary mindset is commander's intent, and you solve it”, he continues. “We are really good at that.” In an era of increased global volatility and emerging threats, deterrence, readiness and the need to remain agile is paramount. “I have yet to see a top-down solution that will beat grassroots effort when it comes to solving a problem”, he said. “Our airmen are empowered to come up with solutions to the problems they have. All the attention to details and standards that go along with this goes a long way.” Hartley's message resonated with airmen, reinforcing our core values to push us to succeed in future operations. In short: Wherever the mission, we're always prepared to face it - no matter the environment. (U.S. Air National Guard video by Staff Sgt. Yonette)

Whilst sifting through old drives for B-Roll for another video I found this old overhead shot of me working on a Till Brönner transcription from a few years back. Obviously I don't set up the camera and makes videos like this every time I transcribe something, but I do make a habit of transcribing on a regular basis. As my ear gets stronger, the material I'm transcribing tends to change. It's quite rare these days to be transcribing linear ideas for instance as I've done so much of that over the past three decades. I'm more curious now about harmony and chord voicings, and how those might work for orchestration and arrangement purposes when I'm in writing-mode. As you can hear from this very raw voice note made with my phone, I'm focusing on harmonic development for this new album I'm planning to record in Europe later in the year. I'm working towards recording the trio (possibly Jojo Mayer and Tom Cawley) in the south of Germany, and then hopping over to Sofia to record the New Bulgarian Voices on top of the trio right after. Layering elements of Jazz, European folk music, electronic music, and some of my biggest influences from the classical world like Chopin, Brahms, Messiaen, Mahler, Schubert, Ravel and Rachmaninoff, is something incredibly exciting to me. Knowing I have access to some of the greatest musicians, engineers, and studios out there gives me a lot of hope that no matter what we do in the studio, we will make music we love. And when you add in the possibilities a choir could generate… I start to get a real buzz about the project even when we're so many months away. This is a clip from my daily practice routine that I'm constantly documenting to make sure ideas aren't lost. The one recurring melody throughout this improvised clip could end up being the main theme for a choral arrangement for instance. You just never know. That's why I felt compelled to share these three things today. * The transcription clip represents where I'm coming from and the crazy amount of hours I've put into transcription and ear training over the years. * The audio clip gives you an idea of how I'm constantly making short voice notes of compositional ideas. * And the video clip is looking forward to this year's recording projects as I continue to write as much as possible every day, and get used to a new instrument so I'm in the best place possible when the red light goes on to record. As always, be sure to stream the latest album with Mark Turner, John Ellis, Gretchen Parlato, Jojo Mayer, Elliot Mason, Gregoire Maret, and Tim Miller for free wherever you listen to music. NOTE: This is not an official Canon USA show. This is a podcast first and foremost, available in both audio-only or video, and the video is also placed on YouTube. My hope is that by going through all of the AF options one-at-a-time, in extreme detail, you will be able to get more out of the camera system you have. My first show with Rudy Winston, a Technical Marketing Consultant for Canon USA, was back in February of 2022 for "Canon Auto-Focus Explained", so almost exactly 3 years ago. To date, it's still one of the favorite shows that I've done. I find that as photographers our relationship with auto-focus isn't always a great one. It's so easy to say "the camera missed focus", or "it front or back focused". The problem is that's not the case more often than not. Don't misunderstand me, these issues are real - that's why micro adjustments exist. Cameras and lenses are not perfect, and the software that runs anything today can have issues, but focus issues often relate to the end user not having the AF system configured correctly, or not understanding how the system really works. That's how the first show with Rudy came to be, and to say that was popular is an understatement: To date it's had roughly: 453,000 views on YouTube, in addition to all the views in the video and audio-only podcast feeds. But when we recorded that show the R3 was brand new, and it wasn't widely available. So I used my R5 for the menu examples in that show, and while we did talk about the AF settings unique to the newer R3, I almost immediately had people asking for an updated video. Since then, we've seen the R6 Mark 2 and the R5 Mark 2 come out, and again, lots of people have requested an update to cover all of the newer Auto Focus features. My thing is, it doesn't make sense to do a video specific to each camera model, there's too much overlap, so I wanted to wait until the R1 had actually been released - and it was in November of last year, it started hitting stores in Nov of 2024. So today, we are going to do basically the same thing that we did 3 years ago, we're going to go through all of the AF menus, and describe every single command and option for you in detail. For this show I am going to use the new Canon R1 for the menu examples, which needs a little explanation. When I used the R5 last time I had some people complain that I was using a body out of their price range, while others complained I wasn't using the R3. So, let me try to explain my decision making process… The higher end bodies have features the lower end bodies don't - but they also have most, if not all, of the features on the lower end bodies - so to cover as many settings as possible, spanning bodies in all price ranges, the best choice is the higher end body, which today is the R1. Unfortunately, I don't own an R1… so a HUGE thank you to Canon USA for getting me one to use for this show. Now, if you're not a Canon shooter.. DON'T RUN AWAY! While we are using the Canon EOS R1 for the examples today, whatever brand you use: Nikon Sony Panasonic Etc Most of today's cameras will have some equivalent to the settings we talk about… AF option names will change between brands, and even between models in the same brand, some may be more or less granular, or in different places in the menus EVEN for the same brands, but understanding these AF concepts will still help you get the most out of your camera, regardless of the brand. One last disclaimer: I also had some people comment on the last video that they wished I had inserted some B-Roll showing the features in action through the viewfinder, so you could see the AF moving and changing for something like a person running, or a bird in flight etc. Thank you to everyone that made suggestions, but again, with this video, I have made an intentional choice to not do that. There's a few production reasons for that choice, but the biggest thing for me is that I want this video to be as generic ...

In today's short episode of “Highly Recommended”, I'm here to tell you it's time to try a poetry video project! Harness students' excitement over the creator economy and the survival of TikTok and get them interpreting poetry through a medium that only keeps getting MORE relevant to communication today. First things first, let's talk mentor texts. There are some VERY cool poetry videos online that take their interpretation in wildly different directions. I suggest taking a look at Amanda Gorman's “Earthrise,” Ada Limón's “A Poem for Europa,” and Rudy Francisco's “Complainers,” which I'll link for you in the show notes. As students watch, have them sketchnote ideas for CRAFT moves. What do they notice about the combination of talking head shots vs. B-Roll? Is their background music? How did the producer make cuts and transitions? How does the video bring out the meaning of the poem? How about the audio? Once students have started to warm up to this idea of interpreting poems through video, it's time for them to choose a poem of their own to interpret. Now you could easily make this a project to help them dig deep into a famous poem of their choice, OR you could let them record and create around an original piece of their own, depending on your goals. They should print up a script of their poem which they can annotate with ideas for visuals and how they will want to read the poem aloud. Parallel to their written script, they'll want to do some storyboarding, sketching out the order of their film clip videos. Now there are two free platforms I'd recommend for this project. Vocaroo, which we've discussed many times, is perfect for recording the audio easily and snagging the MP3 file. Then they can upload it to Canva, which will allow them to combine photos, videos, and audio of their own with photos, videos, and audio available on Canva. This is the most technical part of the project, so I've made you a little tutorial video for how to put together a video in Canva (which I'll link in the show notes). While there will be a learning curve on learning to put together a video, it's a learning curve well worth trekking. This would be a great starter project leading toward video options on future choice boards, documentary projects, PSA projects, and other types of video projects in your class or department arc. Inside Canva, your students will be able to sequence text slides, video clips, and photos to create a visual sequence that represents their interpretation of the poem, and overlay it with their audio recording of their script. They can even add music at a low level behind their voice in different sections if they wish. If you've been waiting for the right moment to get your feet wet with video, let this be your sign that YOU CAN DO IT! It's OK to launch a project without total confidence in the tech. Your students may just know a lot about this and be able to help each other and you, and there are not many tech problems out there that a quick tutorial search on YouTube won't fix. I've seen some wonderful student work from the poetry video project, and so can you!
