He was young, ambitious, and heir to one of the most powerful families in American history.  But Michael Rockefeller wasn't chasing money, politics, or prestige.  He was chasing meaning… Art. Culture. A sense of connection that no trust fund could buy. In 1961, the 23 year old Harvard graduate vanished off the coast of what is now Indonesia - just moments after saying he thought he could make it to shore. He was never seen again. Officially? They say he drowned.  But in the decades since, a darker theory has emerged - one that leads you deep into the swamps of New Guinea, into a culture misunderstood, and into the unsettling possibility…. That Micahel didn't die in the water.  He made it to land. And what happened next has haunted the Rockefeller legacy - and captivated the world - for over 60 years. Our regular podcast has catered principally for racing fans since its introduction seven years ago. This week we break the mould by presenting an interview with Royce Simmons OAM who reached dizzy heights in his footballing career as both player and coach. From the time of his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2022, Royce hasn't left a stone unturned in keeping himself fit enough to pursue every avenue in raising money for dementia research. His results have been inspiring. The celebrated hooker played in 238 games for Penrith between 1980-1991, ten  for the NSW Blues and another ten in the green and gold of Australia. Every time I run into Royce at a sporting function I'm reminded of the fact that he should be a guest on our podcast. I issued an invitation at a recent Panthers charity luncheon and he graciously accepted.  Royce talks about his current state of health and the success of the “Royce's Big Walk” initiative which has raised thousands of dollars for dementia research. He talks about his recent hosting role at a Saturday afternoon Panthers initiative called “Royce's Race Day”. Members and guests got to enjoy the best in food and drinks, good fellowship and the opportunity to chat with one of Penrith's favourite sons.  Royce talks of his love of a dabble but doesn't rate himself as a successful punter. The Penrith Hall Of Famer talks of early life in the Lachlan Valley township of Canowindra where he developed a liking for the Rugby Union code. Royce talks of his hard working parents and his siblings - two sisters and one brother. He reflects on a move to nearby Gooloogong when his father George purchased the local butcher shop. He brings up the subject of Cocky Raider, a champion pacer of the late 60's and early 70's who was trained in the town by Jack McWilliam. Royce was just ten or eleven years of age but hasn't forgotten the impact Cocky Raider had on the 500 residents of Gooloogong.  Royce looks back on his subsequent move to the big smoke and trial games for St George and South Sydney.  He hasn't forgotten an unexpected approach from the Penrith Club generated by a recommendation from Parramatta star Barry Rushworth. To make it all come together Royce had to play two trial games in twenty four hours. Many have forgotten that Simmons played lock forward in his first year with Penrith.  The former champion hooker talks of the radical changes in the scrum feed. He looks back on his unforgettable debut for the NSW Blues in 1984.  Royce says he lost the job to Benny Elias in 1985, but returned the following year to get “Man Of The Match” in Game 1. His form in the 1986 State Of Origin series earned him a spot in the Kangaroo squad to play three tests against NZ. He was the first Penrith product to play for Australia. Later in 1986 Royce toured with the Kangaroo side in a six test series against Papua New Guinea, Great Britain and France. He didn't get a break that year. Royce talks about his seven years as captain of the Penrith side, a role he took very seriously. He looks back on Penrith's clash with a very strong Canberra side in the Winfield Cup Grand Final of 1990.  Perhaps Royce Simmons is best remembered for his two try contribution to Penrith's first ever premiership win in 1991. It was his final appearance as a player, and one he'll never forget. Royce takes us through the circumstances under which his “double” eventuated. The OAM inductee takes us through his coaching days which began with the St Mary's first grade side but soon escalated to loftier heights. On returning to Australia Royce was invited to take over the role of Panthers coach from the departing Phil Gould. Royce looks back on seven happy years as assistant coach of the Wests Tigers under the leadership of Tim Sheens. The former Penrith legend was gobsmacked when an offer came for him to coach the famous St Helen's Club in England. It didn't work out quite as well as Royce had hoped. He pays tribute to his wonderful family - wife Liane, children Kirk, Britt, Carly and Demi and special mention of seven grandchildren. Royce acknowledges the administrative talents of Brian Fletcher who recently announced impending retirement from his role as Panthers Group CEO.  I've never forgotten the Network Ten coverage of the 1991 Winfield Cup Grand Final. It was Penrith's first premiership, and an unforgettable swansong for one of the club's greatest sons. Royce Simmons remembers the greatest day of his playing career on this week's podcast.

I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week is our annual updates episode, and we'll also learn about an animal suggested by Emerson. But first, we have some corrections! Nicholas shared a paper with me that indicates that marsupials actually evolved in what is now Asia, with marsupial ancestors discovered in China. They spread into North America later. So I've been getting that wrong over many episodes, over several years. Måns shared a correction from an older episode where I mentioned that humans can't get pregnant while breastfeeding a baby. I've heard this all my life but it turns out it's not true. It is true that a woman's fertility cycle is suppressed after giving birth, but it's not related to breastfeeding. Some women can become pregnant again only a few months after giving birth, while others can't get pregnant again for a few years. It depends on the individual. That's important, since the myth is so widespread that many women get pregnant by accident thinking they can't since they're still feeding a baby. Warblrwatchr commented on the ultraviolet episode and mentioned that cats can see ultraviolet, which is useful to them because mouse urine glows in UV light. Finally, Llewelly pointed out that in episode 416, I didn't mention that fire ant venom isn't delivered when the ant bites someone. The ant bites with its mandibles to hold on, then uses the stinger on its back end to sting repeatedly. Now, let's dive into some updates about animals we've talked about in past episodes. As usual, I don't try to give an update on every single animal, because we'd be here all week if I did. I just chose interesting studies that caught my eye. In episode 402, we talked about snakes that travel in unusual ways, like sidewinders. Even though I had a note to myself to talk about the brown tree snake in that episode, I completely forgot. The brown tree snake is native to parts of coastal Australia and many islands around Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. It's not native to Guam, which is an island in the western Pacific, way far away from the brown tree snake's home. But in the late 1940s, some brown tree snakes made their way to Guam in cargo ships and have become invasive since then. The brown tree snake can grow up to six and a half feet long, or 2 meters, and is nocturnal, aggressive, and venomous. It's not typically a danger to adults, but its venom can be dangerous to children and pets. The government employs trained dogs to find the snakes so they can be removed, and this has worked so well that brown tree snake population is declining rapidly on the island. But that hasn't stopped the snake from driving many native animals to extinction in the last 75 years, especially birds. One of the things scientists did in Guam to try and protect the native birds was to place smooth poles around the island so birds could nest on top but snakes couldn't climb up to eat the eggs and chicks. But before long, the snakes had figured out a way to climb the poles, a method never before documented in any snake. To climb a pole, the snake wraps its body around it, with the head overlapping the tail. Then it sort of scoots itself up the pole with tiny motions of its spine...

Have you ever wondered what happens when cutting-edge network technology meets the rugged frontlines of wildlife conservation? In this episode, I sat down with Sophie Maxwell, the driving force behind the Connected Conservation Foundation, to understand how digital infrastructure and real-time data are changing the odds for endangered species and local communities across more than a dozen countries. Sophie walked me through the journey from a desperate battle to protect rhinos in South Africa's Sabi Sand Nature Reserve to a global blueprint now safeguarding elephants, gorillas, and countless other species in landscapes as remote as Namibia and Papua New Guinea. She explained how early experiments with network connectivity, sensors and satellite imagery grew into robust systems that give conservation teams live visibility across vast, rugged reserves — the same technology helping rangers detect poachers before they strike, monitor ecosystem health, and manage human-wildlife conflict more intelligently. This conversation shed light not only on the hardware and software powering this revolution but also on how it uplifts the people living closest to these protected places. Sophie shared how Cisco's Networking Academy is training a new generation of protected area technicians, offering communities meaningful careers that keep vital technology running and wildlife safe. It's a story that flips the usual narrative of technology replacing people and shows instead how it can amplify human impact where it's needed most. Looking ahead, we discussed how advancements in AI and satellite imaging could unlock an even sharper understanding of changing landscapes, climate impacts, and species migration patterns, driving better conservation decisions at scale. For Sophie, what surprises her most isn't just the power of each new tool, but the way combining them turns data into actionable insight, trust and resilience for ecosystems and local people alike. If you've ever doubted that networks and sensors could help save a rhino or an elephant, or questioned whether technology can truly serve nature rather than exploit it, this episode will make you think again. What role do you see for digital innovation in addressing our planet's most urgent environmental challenges? Join the conversation and share your thoughts.

Let's be honest. Teaching and learning have changed somewhat over the years, but schools as institutions can still “feel” very similar to how they did when my grandfather was a school superintendent back in the 1940s. So what are some ways we can reimagine school? It takes a real visionary to think outside of this rigid box, wouldn't you say? Our guest on this episode, educator and author Paul Halford, is one such visionary. Paul guides us through his perspective on reimagining schools.Paul Halford has worked in education for over 50 years including 35 in management. We are back with part two of Prion Diseases or Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies. Kuru is a TSE/Prion disease that has affected the native people's of Papua New Guinea during the last century or so. I don't want to spoil just how it came about, but it does involve some taboo--and thankfully no longer practiced--funerary rites. The Australians who were observing and studying them just after WWI discovered the Fore people there were dying out quickly (the women and children especially) of some strange illness that led them to shake and tremble violently, become confused, and even laugh deliriously before dying. There native peoples had long believed it to come from sorcery, but the Australians and an American physician with many a flaw to discuss here were not content with such an answer. Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) was identified in patients in the early 20th century and the symptoms were similar to other diseases now known to be prion diseases: dementia, hallucinations, stumbling, falling, loss of coordination, death. This seemed to be spontaneous and that was that. Then Europe's cattle began to show signs and symptoms that were alarming. They too loss their coordination, became agitated, held their heads strangely, fell over, and died. Cows who were ill were slaughtered and their meat and tissues made it into the food chain. In Cows, the illness was identified as Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), though some journalists referred to it as "mad cow" disease. While the government agencies tried to keep it a secret to avoid the meat economy from going under, humans became infected via the ingestion of BSE infected meat. This illness in humans was identified as variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease and it caused chaos and panic among those who had been buying and eating beef. America would face a similar battle with similar government agency actions and there are some (scientists included) who have begun to believe that CJD is never sporadic but likely always related in some way to infected meat. Let's see why they think as much. Finally, we need to discuss what is happening to deer, especially here in North America. Chronic Wasting Disease showed up in Colorado in deer in the late 1900s (1970 onward) and it has since spread to elk, moose, reindeer and other such animals throughout the US and Canada. These animals are dying of a prion disease that likely jumped from sheep as Scrapie into deer as CWD. How could this have happened and what could it mean for the future?Thank you to all of our listeners and supporters!
