President Joe Biden was set to make a historic tour through the Indo-Pacific over the next week, becoming the first sitting U.S. President to visit Papua New Guinea, an island state that declared a national holiday for his arrival. But negotiations over the debt limit back home forced the President to cut his trip short, and he'll return to Washington immediately after the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan. Debate over the debt ceiling could not be postponed, the White House said, with as the U.S. closes in on the day it will run out of cash. Biden's cancelled visits would have taken place at a time of growing concern about China's expanding military and economic influence in the region, and on the heels of G-7 discussions about competition with China and the war in Ukraine. Can the U.S. reassert itself as a leader on the international stage if it can't take care of business at home? The New Yorker staff writers Susan B. Glasser, Jane Mayer, and Evan Osnos analyze America's global standing and the G-7 summit in this week's roundtable discussion.

Walking Kokoda Track with ONLY HALF a Pelvis & Cultivating Resilience | Adam Kellerman (2021)

In this episode from Season 1 (2021) we have Adam Kellerman joining us. Adam is quite frankly a remarkable human being. The reasons I invited him on as a guest become evident as I detail his bio, which essentially becomes some of the story he walks us through. This includes surviving cancer as a young teenager, having half of his pelvis removed, going on to play professional wheelchair tennis which included two Paralympic games in London and Rio, he was ranked #8 in the world and #1 in Australia, but after a pivotal point in his career, he winded up doing charity work in Africa and in Australia, and somehow went on to stop using his wheelchair, and ended up on a grand journey to hike the very well known, and very challenging, Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. On top of that, his life is intertwined with practices that cultivate a well-rounded approach to holistic health and wellness, which we explore throughout his story, including his connection to ceremony, ritual, facing death, honouring the sacred, connecting with nature and more. He's now a motivational speaker for schools and businesses and he speaks to the importance of building resilience, overcoming adversity and thriving through change, he mentors cancer survivors, people with chronic pain, and young adults, alongside teaching standing meditation and Calligraphy Qigong, amongst all the other roles he slips and slides into, like we all do. It was a real pleasure to sit down and weave in and out of Adam's own Birdsong and I trust you'll find value in our dialogue to carry with you on your own path forward.   EPISODE NOTES: Healing your life emotionally and physically after bone cancer Tapping into and taking control of your own healing power Some of the pillars of Adam's healing journey Healing trauma on a cellular level Learning lessons from pain Choosing life in the face of pain and darkness Understanding why life, the blessings and the challenges, are a gift Embracing the challenge and opportunity of COV-19 The sharing of wisdom The simple magic of rituals The healing power of connecting with your spirit   TIMESTAMPS: [4:00] Opening the Container: Adam opens the circle with a reminder to bring our focus back to the breath [8:27] Adam's current mission: Walking for the Age of Ability...AFTER removal of his right hip [10:00] Recovering after a bone cancer diagnosis [14:18] Taking charge of your healing [18:32] Adam's support network during his journey [27:00] Dealing with trauma on a cellular level (Lessons from Adam's masseuse) [35:00] Dealing with (instead of running from pain) [58:25] Musings on choosing life [1:00:00] All of life is a gift [1:06:28] The challenge (and opportunity) in the COV-19 crisis [1:12:00] Confronting the Uncomfortable & Learning [1:19:00] Dealing with the Lessons of Pain [1:21:00] Rituals [1:26:00] Healing spiritually [1:32:37] Closing the conversation

Grant Walton, Associate Professor at the Crawford School of Public Policy (Australian National University, speaks to Dan Hough about his research on corruption in Papua New Guinea (PNG). A key focus for Grant has been to explore what people understand by corruption in PNG and how this compares to Western understandings of the term. The disconnection between the two has implications for how we approach messaging on countering corruption which risks being ineffective or even backfiring if it does not account for local understandings. Grant also outlines the formal state anti-corruption institutions in place in PNG, leading to discussion on the appropriate roles for external actors in supporting these institutions. Like the prophet Elijah in the Old Testament, many times we as followers of Jesus who seek to make His name known, find ourselves crying out to God “I have had enough Lord”. Learning how to find God in our trials and to trust His loving faithfulness to refine us is a necessary part of our journey. Though sometimes difficult to share openly, the failures, disappointments, and hard times are important in the life of a global worker. Most often, just as in Elijah’s life in I Kings 19, the beauty and majesty and power of God meet us in these times. Sharing from her personal journey in medical missions as a general surgeon in the Middle East and in Kenya, Dr. Carol Spears will explore ways from scripture to find hope and beauty in the desert experiences of missionary service. The scripture is I Kings 19

Matthew 9:9-13, 35-38 // Jesus tells us that the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Not only are we to pray for the Lord to raise up laborers for the harvest, we should not be surprised when the Lord calls us to participate in his harvest. This was the case of Dr. Ryan Pennington, director of Refugee Language Project, and his family, who were called to the Ma Manda people of Papua New Guinea to provide the Scriptures in their own language. As the director of Refugee Language Project, Ryan and his team work with refugee communities every day to provide translation services, education, and many other services to serve Amarillo's diverse refugee populations. Ryan tasks us to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send laborers to this harvest - will you pray, and if God calls you to serve, will you serve? Our mission is to declare the gospel of Jesus Christ with our words and display the gospel of Jesus Christ with our lives to our neighbors and to the nations.
