Interview with Michael Murphy, Executive Chairman of South Pacific Metals Recording date: 22nd September 2026South Pacific Metals Corp. (TSXV:SPMC, OTCQB:SPMEF, FSE:6J00) is a Papua New Guinea-focused gold-copper explorer built around a straightforward thesis: hold ground on the same geological structures that have already produced some of the world's most significant gold-copper mines, and let proximity to proven systems reduce exploration risk relative to greenfield ground.The company's four projects sit within three established PNG mining districts. Kili Teke, acquired from Harmony Gold in 2023, is located roughly 40 kilometres from Barrick's Porgera mine and carries an NI 43-101 Inferred Resource of 237 million tonnes grading 0.24 g/t Au and 0.34% Cu, containing 1.81 million ounces of gold and 802,000 tonnes of copper (effective November 2022). Management argues this resource significantly understates the system's scale, since it is trimmed to roughly 650 metres from surface and excludes several higher-grade targets identified in historical and recent sampling including skarns returning up to 27.5% Cu at surface and an alkalic gold target with soil anomalies to 9,390 ppb Au. Drill-ready targets at these excluded zones are expected by the end of October 2026.Osena and Anga sit on the Kainantu Transfer Zone, the same structure hosting K92 Mining's high-margin Kainantu operation. Drilling at Osena's Megabe target has already returned high-grade intercepts, including 8 metres at 8.95 g/t Au (with 5 metres at 12.46 g/t Au inside that), and four step-out holes have extended the mineralised structure to over 300 metres of strike in roughly ten weeks since the first discovery hole, a pace Executive Chairman Michael Murphy pointed to directly. Four additional holes at the nearby Ontenu Central target are complete, with assay results still pending.May River, the company's fourth project, sits approximately 15 kilometres from PanAust's Frieda River deposit, one of the world's largest undeveloped copper-gold projects, and hosts historical drill intercepts including 19 metres at 11.47% Cu and 2.17 g/t Au.Management brings relevant credibility to this positioning. Murphy previously spent 12 years on the board of Torex Gold, which he built from a small shell company into a producer now valued at more than $4 billion. The board also includes Alex Davidson, formerly EVP of Exploration and Corporate Development at Barrick Gold, and CEO Timo Jauristo, a 40-year mining executive with senior roles at Goldcorp and Placer Dome.On the financial side, Murphy told Crux Investor that a financing of roughly $20 million backed by several established mining-sector institutional funds was in its final stages at the time of the interview, intended to fund the current work programme through year-end 2026. A hospital that looked dirty helped Dr. Stephanie Taylor question what a healthy environment actually is. While working in Papua New Guinea, she expected poor infection outcomes amid cracked concrete floors, limited gloves, and conditions that seemed far less sterile than American hospitals. Instead, patients often did surprisingly well. That experience helped send Taylor, a Harvard-trained physician, back to school for a master's in architecture—and toward a career studying the largely invisible relationship between buildings and human health. In this conversation, she explains why dry indoor air can weaken our natural defenses within minutes, why eliminating microbes isn't necessarily desirable, and how humidity, ventilation, building materials, and even dogs can influence the microbial environments that surround us. Taylor makes the case for treating human health as a measure of how well a building performs—and for moving medicine further toward prevention. Why would someone who watched one deep-sea mining company collapse go back and try it again? That's the question at the center of this episode, and it's not hypothetical. It happened, with the same industry, some of the same licenses, and the same person at the center of it: Gerard Barron, now CEO of The Metals Company (TMC), one of the most prominent and best-funded companies pushing to start commercial deep-sea mining today. This isn't framed as an accusation against Barron specifically. It's a documented sequence of decisions, and by the end, you can decide for yourself what the motive looks like. Before TMC, Barron was an early investor and promoter behind Nautilus Minerals, a company that pursued seafloor mineral deposits off Papua New Guinea. Nautilus raised hundreds of millions of dollars, including investment from the PNG government itself, before its costs spiraled, it was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange, and it filed for bankruptcy in 2019. Barron reportedly sold his shares years before the collapse, walking away with a return as high as $30 million, while PNG's government and environment were left holding the damage. Years later, people connected to Nautilus, including Barron, regrouped as Deep Green, which became The Metals Company, and picked up exploration rights in the Clarion Clipperton Zone that had once belonged to Nautilus. This episode traces that arc from Adstream to Nautilus to TMC, including TMC's push to trigger the ISA's two-year rule, its more recent pursuit of a US mining permit outside the International Seabed Authority process entirely, and Barron's consistent argument that mining the seabed is less environmentally damaging than mining on land. Whether that comparison holds up, and what it means that the environmental cost of Nautilus's failure barely factors into how Barron talks about it now, is the thread running through the whole story. Takeaways Gerard Barron, now CEO of The Metals Company (TMC), was an early investor and promoter (not CEO) behind an earlier deep-sea mining venture, Nautilus Minerals, which went bankrupt in 2019. Nautilus's projected operating costs of about $70 per ton reportedly grew to about $192 per ton, contributing to its delisting from the Toronto Stock Exchange and eventual bankruptcy. Papua New Guinea's government invested in Nautilus and, according to the country's prime minister, the country spent roughly 300 million Kina (about $72 million USD) on a project later called a "total failure." Barron sold his Nautilus shares years before the company's collapse, reportedly for as much as $30 million, while PNG's government was still invested. TMC, which Barron now leads, is pursuing a US permitting path through NOAA and the Trump administration, outside the ISA process. Long-term recovery data on deep-sea mining damage remains limited; some studies cited in the episode indicate no biodiversity recovery three to four years after mining activity occurred. Barron has publicly compared seabed mining favorably to land-based mining, but a specific biomass figure he's cited in at least one interview is disputed in this episode as inaccurate. Amy Gross was born on Long Island, New York, and received her BFA from the Cooper Union in New York City. After a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, she started a graphic design company, and worked as a surface designer, specializing in textiles, children's products and toy design. In 2000 she moved to South Florida, and fascinated by the subtropical environment and the intricate natural growth there, began making hand-beaded jewelry. Her work expanded to embroidered canvases, then sculpture merging observed natural elements with invented life forms. In 2006, Gross received a grant from the South Florida Cultural Consortium, was the finalist for the Southern Prize in 2019, and received an Artist Innovation Fellowship in 2020. Her mixed media sculpture is represented by Momentum Gallery in Asheville, NC. Selected exhibits include the Craft and Folk Art Museum of Los Angeles, The Minnesota Museum of Art, the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, the Asheville Art Museum, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Bascom Center, and fairs Art Wynwood and SOFA. Her shadowboxes are part of the permanent collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and, as part of the Art in Embassies program, installed in the new American Embassy in Papua New Guinea. Her work has appeared in Fiber Arts Magazine, American Craft Magazine, The Washington Post, Luxe Magazine, Create Magazine and the art and culture blogs Colossal TreeHugger, ArtMag and The Jealous Curator.
