As a geographical agriculturist, I have focused on food production around the world, but also on being faced with predatory action. These stories relate such events in my life. Some are humorous and some are educational. my Peace Corps experience provided the spark that led to this series of adventures and observations. Farming strategies vary tremendously around the world, from my home farm in Colorado to those in Brazil, Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique. A gallon of gas costs about twice as much in California as it does pretty much anywhere else in the United States. He read a lot of youth fiction starting at 10 years old, but as a teenager, had a voracious appetite for nonfiction. In his 20s he discovered a few wonderful fiction writers, but has still kept mostly to nonfiction through the decades.His first books were Willard Price's Adventure series and Gerald Durrell books on real-life animal collecting. He also read detective and war stories (Biggles) and lots of travel accounts and travel guides.Robert Louis Stevenson was a favorite—Treasure Island, Kidnapped—and later discovered that Stevenson was a very good essayist too. John also enjoyed Rudyard Kipling's Kim.The ancient Greeks left a great impression on him: Herodotus (The Histories) and Thucydides (The Peloponnesian War)In his early 20s he started reading proper literature:Anna Karenina, Dr Zhivago, George Orwell, and Joseph Conrad. He loved Peter Hopkirk's The Great Game series featuring colorful adventurers and spies in exotic locations. In his early 30s he discovered Raymond Chandler and in his 40s H.P. Lovecraft.For books on Asia and East Asia, he started reading about Burma in the late 1980s, and early 1990s, and Mongolia in the mid-1990s, and increasingly China and Taiwan, and even some works on Japan.Some well known book titles that made an early impression were Lost Horizon by James Hilton, Burmese Days by George Orwell, The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck, and Jonathan Spence's China books. Also books on Asia by Maurice Collis.Amy's ReadingAs a child, Amy remembers reading Black Beauty (Anna Sewell, 1877), Walter Farley's series The Black Stallion (1941), and a book called Ponies Plot (Janet Hickman, 1971). She loved all the required reading for school (some books now banned): English literature such as Graham Greene's Brighton Rock, Shakespeare's plays, and lots of Roald Dahl, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and James and the Giant Peach; and American authors John Steinbeck (1930s–1950s), J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye (1951), Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1850), Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh (1964) and A Separate Peace (1959) by John Knowles. The rate of women who die during childbirth is alarmingly high in parts of the Pacific.  According to World Population Review, the rate of maternal mortality in Papua New Guinea is 192 deaths in every 100,000 live births.  That's compared with a country like Australia, which is just three in every 100,000 births. The reasons for these deaths vary from geographic barriers and lack of medical services to cultural barriers.  However, measures are being taken to address this limitation and help save the lives of women in the Pacific. Sistas Let's Talk host Natasha Meten speaks to Marshall Islands health secretary Francyne Wase-Jacklick, Stevie Merino-Mesa from the Birthworkers of Colour Collective and midwife Cherolyn Polomon who started a Whatsapp group for hundreds of Papua New Guinea's health workers to collaborate about maternal health.

 “There is something in us,” nature writer Jay Griffiths says, “that detests the tepid world of net curtains … the chloroform world where human nature is well schooled, tamed from childhood on, where the radiators are permanently on mild and the windows are permanently closed.”   Lost with her life and desperate to escape the confines of the modern world, Jay set out on a journey to explore the world's wildest places. She would explore ice, earth, water, fire and air. It would take seven years and all her savings. She would sing with cannibals in the highlands of West Papua, drink ayahuasca with shamans in the amazon. She explored the frozen arctic with Innuits and the fire desert with the aboriginals of the Australia.   Through her travels Jay learned the wisdom of the indigenous people that call these elements home. She discovered how they shaped their culture and beliefs, and in time how they shaped her too. She was seeking wildness. She was following her ‘feral angel', listening to its call to take flight and reconnect with the wildness inside her.   This episode is the original interview I did with Jay a few years ago. The documentary ‘Adventure' episode is about 100 episodes back in the feed. Firstly, it's an amazing chat, and I had to cut so much good stuff out to make the documentary. And secondly, it's Native American Heritage Month and although Jay doesn't spend time with Native Americans, her story is about learning how indigenous people connect with the wild in ice, earth, air and fire.    This is a story for anyone that's ever crawled up the walls, stared out the window and dreamed of escape.
