It claims it'd also help tackle trans-national crime and climate-related disasters. Former Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says it would be a tough deal to negotiate, but it's feasible. In this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick shares inspiring details from Pope Leo XIV’s historic canonization of seven new saints at St. Peter’s Square – an event that drew 70,000 faithful. Among them were the first saints from Venezuela and Papua New Guinea, including St. Peter To Rot, martyred for defending Christian marriage during World War II, and St. José Gregorio Hernández, the beloved “Doctor of the Poor.” Also canonized was St. Bartolo Longo, a former Satanist turned zealous apostle of the Rosary who built the famous Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. Patrick shares each saint’s extraordinary witness of faith – from the rainforest missions of St. Maria Troncatti to the charitable works of St. Vincenza Maria Poloni and St. Maria del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, who overcame disability to found a religious order.

Friends of the Rosary,Yesterday, in St. Peter's Square, Rome, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed seven new saints, “witnesses who with God's grace, kept the lamp of faith burning.”“They became lamps capable of spreading the light of Christ,” the Holy Father said in his homily.“May their intercession assist us in our trials and their example inspire us in our shared vocation to holiness,” he said.During the canonization Mass, unfolded under a bright Roman sun, the Pope declared the first two Venezuelan saints: St. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, known as “the doctor of the poor,” and St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, a religious sister born without her left arm who went on to found the Servants of Jesus in Caracas in 1965.Among the new saints were also two martyrs. St. Peter To Rot, a lay catechist martyred in Papua New Guinea during the Japanese occupation in World War II, became the country's first saint. To Rot defied Japanese authorities who permitted polygamy, defending Christian marriage until his death.St. Ignatius Maloyan, an Armenian Catholic archbishop, was executed during the Armenian genocide after refusing to convert to Islam. “I consider the shedding of my blood for my faith to be the sweetest desire of my heart,” Maloyan said before his death. “If I am tortured for the love of him who died for me, I will be among those who will have joy and bliss, and I will have obtained to see my Lord and my God.”Among the most well-known of the new saints is St. Bartolo Longo, a 19th-century Italian lawyer who was Satanic before returning to the Church with zeal. After his conversion, Bartolo Longo became the Apostle of the Rosary, dedicating his life to promoting the rosary and building the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii, now one of Italy's most beloved Marian pilgrimage sites. In his homily, Pope Leo XVI said that “what is most precious in the Lord's eyes” is “faith, namely, the bond of love between God and man.”“Our relationship with God is of the utmost importance because at the beginning of time he created all things out of nothing and, at the end of time, he will save mortal beings from nothingness,” the pope said. “A world without faith, then, would be populated by children living without a Father, that is, by creatures without salvation.”In addition to Venezuela's St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, the Italian foundress St. Vincenza Maria Poloni was also canonized. Poloni founded the Sisters of Mercy of Verona and is remembered for her tireless service to the poor, even risking her life during the cholera epidemic of 1836.Pope Leo also canonized St. Maria Troncatti, an Italian Salesian sister who spent 44 years as a missionary among the Indigenous Shuar people in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest. Known affectionately as “Madrecita,” or “little mother,” she served as a nurse, surgeon, and catechist with missionary zeal. The canonization coincided with World Mission Sunday. Before praying the Angelus, Pope Leo XIV, who was once an Augustinian missionary himself in Peru, urged the faithful to pray for today's missionaries.Today, October 20, we celebrate the feast day of St. Paul of the Cross.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! Topics:Boomers, Misinformation, and Market Monopolies: A Weekly ReviewThe podcast opens with the hosts discussing technical difficulties experienced by Joe, the tech guy. They then delve into a conversation about generational differences, particularly focusing on Boomers and their susceptibility to misinformation. They explore why older adults are more prone to believing fake news, attributing it to memory deficits and repetition of information. The discussion shifts to climate change scepticism, where they highlight how individualistic beliefs and a lack of environmental concern contribute to such scepticism. The hosts then address the influence of Amazon's business practices on market efficiency, describing how the platform's dominance leads to higher prices and market distortions. They also talk about a recent defence deal between Australia and Papua New Guinea, examining the strategic motives behind it. The conversation rounds out with criticisms of the Trump administration's authoritarian moves, especially in the context of handling Venezuela and domestic unrest. The podcast concludes with a lighter note on Barron Trump's tech-savviness as described by Donald Trump.00:00 Introduction and Technical Difficulties02:11 Boomers and Generational Differences05:17 Political Shenanigans in Australia11:07 Climate Change Skepticism28:15 Amazon's Market Dominance43:59 Debating Bernie Sanders' Electability46:12 Australia-Papua New Guinea Defense Deal47:57 China's Influence in the Pacific55:12 Fluoridation and Public Health56:34 Trump's Authoritarian Moves01:12:53 Venezuela and U.S. Foreign Policy01:15:43 Trump's Legacy and Future01:18:39 Podcast Wrap-UpTo financially support the Podcast you can make:a per-episode donation via Patreon or one-off donation via credit card; orone-off or regular donations via Paypal orif you are into Cryptocurrency you can send Satoshis. As a geographical agriculturist, I have focused on food production around the world, but also on being faced with predatory action. These stories relate such events in my life. Some are humorous and some are educational. my Peace Corps experience provided the spark that led to this series of adventures and observations. Farming strategies vary tremendously around the world, from my home farm in Colorado to those in Brazil, Sudan, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique. The picture depicts a Sudanese feast, where various food items are laid on an outstretched tablecloth on the ground to serve men dressed in formal attire. Only the men are eating and when they are sated the women come to eat what is left over. Notice the only the right hands are touching the food. The left hand is considered foul and would contaminate the food.

This is part 2 of my conversation with Dr. Michael Muthukrishna. What really drives human progress? What is innovation, and why is innovation not just a feature of modern society but a law of life? How do energy, cooperation, and culture shape the way we create new ideas? These are ideal questions with which to launch our new podcast season on the beauty and burdens of innovation, and I can't think of anyone better suited to address them than my guest today.Dr. Michael Muthukrishna is joint Professor of Economic Psychology at the London School of Economics and Professor of Psychology at NYU (from January 2026). At LSE, he is also Affiliate of the Data Science Institute and STICERD Developmental Economics Group. Michael is co-founder and Technical Director of The Database of Religious History (religiondatabase.org), founder of the LSE Culturalytik project (culturalytik.com), London School of Artificial Intelligence (lsai.org.uk), and Center for Human Progress (humanprogress.center), Research Lead of Cities, Culture, and Technology at the African School of Economics' Africa Urban Lab (aul.city), and Scientific Advisor at the AI startup Electric Twin (electrictwin.com). Michael's research applies an evolutionary framework to understand human cooperation, tackling key topics, including: the barriers to cooperation, particularly how different mechanisms of cooperation (such as family ties versus impartial institutions) can potentially undermine each other; the impact of cultural differences on psychology and behavior; the processes of social learning; and how these learning processes drive innovation and cultural change. His research and interviews have appeared in outlets including CNN, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Scientific American, PBS, Vice, Newsweek, Time, New York Magazine, Nature News, Science News, The Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian. Michael's research is informed by his educational background in engineering and psychology, with graduate training in evolutionary biology, economics, and statistics, and his personal background living in Sri Lanka, Botswana, Papua New Guinea, Australia, Canada, United States, and United Kingdom. Today, I'm beyond thrilled to introduce someone who is not only a missionary hero of the faith, but a personal friend and role model, Anna Russell.Anna is a seasoned missionary who, alongside her husband Jason Russell, has served the people of Papua New Guinea for an incredible 25 years. She's a mother of five, a teacher, a soul winner, and a living testimony of what it looks like to faithfully abide in Christ through the decades. One of the many things I love about Anna is the beautiful balance she carries: a quiet strength wrapped in humble submission. Whether you're sitting across the table from her or reading an update letter from their time on the mission field, you sense the presence of a woman who truly walks with God. I treasure every moment I get to spend with her.Over the years, the Lord has used Anna and her family in mighty ways. They've started 13 churches across Papua New Guinea. Their ministry has seen incredible transformation stories, like Brother Eddie, Brother Aaron, and Brother Busman. All once lost in addiction, now saved, discipled, and pastoring churches themselves. One of the most exciting ministries they're involved in is CRE, Christian Religious Education, a public school outreach that brings Biblical teaching to children weekly, sowing seeds that are already bearing fruit. And yes, for those wondering Anna's favorite local dish, its coconut sago stick with hot milk tea and deer stew.Today, we're going to hear about Anna's journey, the ups and down of the mission field, and how she continues to find strength in abiding with Jesus—every single day. You are going to be encouraged by the heart and life of Anna Russell. So, are you ready to be encouraged and equipped to abide in Christ? Let's get into the heart of today's episode.RESOURCES:By Searching - Book by Isobel KuhnIn the Arena - Book by Isobel KuhnTEAM:Podcast Facilitator - Mrs Tammy Goddard Host - Jennifer BeilSocial Media Director - Lisa Grubb Music Coordinator - Lindsey Osgood Resource Promoter - Connie MarrujoFOLLOW US:InstagramFacebookWebpageYouTube

Earth.fm curator Melissa Pons was recently invited to attend Endless Fields 2025, as one of seven sound artists-in-residence at Portugal's Estúdio Yucca, in the Algarve by the Ria Formosa lagoon. This inaugural edition of Endless Fields, organized by Anna Clock and Stefano Arrigoni, was funded by the Department of Applied Social Sciences at the School of Science and Technology (FCT), NOVA University, Lisbon, Portugal, and co-organized by its participants. Local facilitation was by Raquel Castro - curator, producer, film director, and former president of the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology - and Ivo Louro, PhD Candidate in History, Philosophy and Heritage of Science and Technology (at FCT NOVA), and “occasional” sound artist. During the residency, which involved collective listening and recording, sound performances, jams, and an open day, Melissa conducted interviews with her fellow participants. These conversations form the basis of a new two-part episode of Earth.fm's Wind Is the Original Radio podcast. This, the first part, features Ivo, Iddo Aharony, a composer of electronic and acoustic music and environmental and multimedia compositions, and Xavier Velastín Vicencio - self-described sound designer, composer, technologist, and whale lover. Ivo Louro - who is studying the acoustemologies of Aeolian instruments, examining how they have been used not only to make music from the wind but also to monitor and forecast weather in both scientific and traditional craft settings - discusses: How his lifelong interest in environment, ecology, and science began in childhood, but that it was a university class on acoustic pollution, taken during his environmental engineering training, which opened a new world that linked sound and environment. Later, reading David Toop's Haunted Weather: Music, Silence, and Memory prompted him to begin making field recordings and engaging with sound theory - starting with R. Murray Schafer's The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World and, later, the work of ethnomusicologist Steven Feld, whose field research with the Kaluli people of Papua New Guinea's Bosavi rainforest culminated in the 1991 album Voices of the Rainforest How his research accidentally led him to wind-driven Aeolian instruments. This includes resonators attached to the sails of traditional Portuguese windmills, which cause them to “hum and howl and [generate a] complex drone”, allowing millers to anticipate weather shifts while also producing a kind of music that accompanied their long, solitary hours. For Ivo, these sounds also resonate with personal memories and family histories, echoing rural soundscapes once common across the Portuguese hills Estúdio Yucca's location being “almost like an oasis, [but also] very much just a tiny nook inside an area fraught with environmental issues and pressures”, citing the intensive farming and wastewater production associated with the touristification of the Algarve The connection between field recording and travel, and the environmental impacts of that travel, which has led Ivo to mainly make “field recording[s] around the city [...] [to] avoid going out into the country” How soundscape recordings can make “the world completely change” by engaging with unfamiliar species such as crabs: “put a small, sensitive microphone on the sand and [you'll hear] a full world”. Iddo Aharony is a creative musician and listener who continuously explores the myriad intersections of sound, environment, culture, and technology. His body of work spans a wide variety of instrumentations, media, and interdisciplinary collaborations, from a fully-staged opera to various experimental projects utilizing live electronics, created in collaboration with visual artists, theater directors, scientists, and other musicians. He currently lives in Colorado Springs and is Associate Professor of Music Technology at Colorado College. He talks about: His interest in the way that sounds from our environment can be engaged with in unexpected ways, or how they can surprise listeners The way gradually moving from not really listening to what was around him, to an increased engagement with it, “felt like a door that kept opening more and more” How living in an economic structure that is built around attracting people's attention means that listening to whatever environment in which you find yourself is a wonderful way to be in the world without thinking in terms of functionality or productivity: a small, quiet act of rebellion against that attention economy His fascination with sound since childhood, when, while playing guitar and piano, music was Iddo's “most private place”, where he was able to most fully be himself. And how music's emotional resonances acted as a gateway to emotions that he couldn't otherwise express - leading to the realisation that “the whole world has that potential [for] emotional resonance”. Xavier Velastín Vicencio is a performance and sound artist whose practice spans live art, sound design and composition for theatre, sound installations, sound for video games, sound poetry, algorithmic composition, and digital instrument creation. His work often focuses on utterance, agency, the environment, technology, and the physicality of sound. Xavier is a resident of the Pervasive Media Studios, Bristol, and is currently on a research fellowship with the British Library's Eccles Institute, in London, England. With Melissa, Xavier speaks about: How the ‘liveness' and ‘presentness' of the body and the voice “relate to [...] larger questions about bodily autonomy and agency” His obsession with whales and their songs, which began with his realization that the recordings we generally hear have either been edited to make them audible for us, chosen to fit our idea of how whale song ‘should' sound (avoiding any sounds that are too uncomfortable or challenging), or overlaid with “plinky-plonky” New Age piano music. All of which led to his Edinburgh Festival Fringe show [whalesong]: “a sound play about the noises and voices in the sea [...] [and] a love song to cetaceans”, which was used whale song as an organizing structure His excitement about system design and how organic processes can be embodied within technological systems The pleasure of getting to spend time with other sound artists, as opposed to sound designers whose interests lean towards engineering and the results of sound design: “You know, I'm not that interested in plugins and equipment and [...] how many tracks your REAPER session has [...]; I'm interested in [...] effective moments.” We hope that you enjoy this episode. If you'd like to connect with the participants, you can do so here: Iddo and Xavier. And keep an ear out for part two - coming soon!

It's so big, honestly, it's just ridiculous: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have suggestions from Oz, Sam, and Brody, with some interesting mammals! Let's start with Brody's suggestion, the wallaby! It's been a while since we talked about the wallaby, which is an adorable marsupial closely related to the kangaroo. It's native to Australia and New Guinea, although not every animal that's called a wallaby is actually part of the family Macropodidae. One thing everyone knows about kangaroos, which is also true for wallabies, is that they hop instead of running. Their hind legs are extremely strong with big feet, and in fact the word Macropodidae means big feet. The animal hops by leaning forward and jumping, with its big hind feet leaving the ground at about the same time, and landing at the same time too before it bounces again. Its big tail helps it balance. We talked about the wallaby last in episode 390, so let's learn about some species of wallaby that we didn't talk about then. For example, the spectacled hare-wallaby. It's a small species that's common in northern Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. It's active at night and is mostly solitary, so unless you're wandering around at night you might not have seen one. It's called the spectacled hare-wallaby because it has orange-colored fur around its eyes so that it looks sort of like it's wearing glasses. The rest of its fur is brown, gray, and golden. Its ears are small and its tail and hind legs are very long, with short little front legs. It's very cute. The spectacled hare-wallaby prefers sandy or stony areas, like dunes and shrubland, where it can find lots of plants to eat but can easily hop away if it spots a predator. It's smaller than a domestic cat, but it can travel incredibly fast when it wants to. If you live along the eastern part of Australia, you might have seen the swamp wallaby, also called the black wallaby because it's mostly dark gray or gray-brown in color, often with a white tip to the tail. It's stocky and much larger than the spectacled hare-wallaby, almost three feet tall, or 85 cm, when it's sitting up. It doesn't just live in swamps but also likes forests and other areas with lots of places to hide. Unlike the spectacled hare-wallaby, it's not that fast and can't always outrun potential predators, but it's good at hiding because its fur is so dark. Most wallabies are grazers, meaning they mainly eat grass, but the swamp wallaby is a browser. Instead of having grinding teeth to break down grass, its teeth are sharper for cutting through plant material like bushes, shrubs, and ferns. The swamp wallaby will even use its front legs to pull branches into reach so it can eat the leaves. Wallabies are marsupials, meaning the babies are born extremely early by our standards, crawl into the mother's pouch and clamp onto a teat, and continue to develop in the pouch. Wallabies usually only have one baby at a time, but the mother swamp wallaby has two babies in its pouch almost all its adult life. The swamp wallaby has two uteruses, and a few days before the first baby is ready to be born, the female comes into estrus again, meaning she's ready to mate. By the time her first baby is born, she's already pregnant with her second baby. When the second baby is born, the first baby is old enough that's it doesn't spend all the time in the pouch—but by then,
