“There is something in us,” nature writer Jay Griffiths says, “that detests the tepid world of net curtains … the chloroform world where human nature is well schooled, tamed from childhood on, where the radiators are permanently on mild and the windows are permanently closed.”   Lost with her life and desperate to escape the confines of the modern world, Jay set out on a journey to explore the world's wildest places. She would explore ice, earth, water, fire and air. It would take seven years and all her savings. She would sing with cannibals in the highlands of West Papua, drink ayahuasca with shamans in the amazon. She explored the frozen arctic with Innuits and the fire desert with the aboriginals of the Australia.   Through her travels Jay learned the wisdom of the indigenous people that call these elements home. She discovered how they shaped their culture and beliefs, and in time how they shaped her too. She was seeking wildness. She was following her ‘feral angel', listening to its call to take flight and reconnect with the wildness inside her.   This episode is the original interview I did with Jay a few years ago. The documentary ‘Adventure' episode is about 100 episodes back in the feed. Check out it out on Apple, Spotify or wherever you get your show.  I'm re-running the original interview now for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it's an amazing chat, and I had to cut so much good stuff out to make the documentary. And secondly, it's Native American Heritage Month and although Jay doesn't spend time with Native Americans, her story is about learning how indigenous people connect with the wild in ice, earth, air and fire.    This is a story for anyone that's ever crawled up the walls, stared out the window and dreamed of escape. This is a call to the wild.   Highlights include: ·   Take ayahuasca with shamans in the Amazon ·   Walk naked and alone into the frozen wilderness of the Arctic ·   Trek the highlands with the freedom fighters of West Papua, one of the most remote and least-visited places on earth ·   Have dinner with cannibals ·   Find out how to apply the wisdom of the wild in our own life   Jay's book of this adventure is called ‘Wild: an Elemental Journey'. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of nature writing I have ever read and couldn't recommend it highly enough. Her latest book ‘Why Rebel?' is awesome too. More derbies. The energy around today's Phoenix v Auckland FC derby points to one thing: the A-League has got it right with the introduction of a second NZ team to their competition. Which begs the question, why aren't there more in other Australian competitions where New Zealand has a stake? The answer, I presume, would be something like “it's an Aussie comp, you're lucky to have one team there, sit down and shut up”. Which is understandable, because it's true – what's in it for Australia? Eyeballs? Jersey sales? Broadcast rights? More sponsorship dollars? Stiffer competition? Basketball and rugby league are plainly the targets here, as both sports already have a Kiwi presence in Aussie leagues – the NBL and the NRL. The Breakers were the gold standard for a while and with the accelerated growth of the game here and the undeniable global reach of the game, this should lean into another franchise in NZ. The NRL is screaming for another New Zealand team. The powers that be over the ditch appear to have zero interest in further expansion though. To say the NRL have little or no respect for NZ league is an understatement. They'd rather set up camp in Papua New Guinea. The federal cash sweetener is the only obvious reason as to why they would, nothing else makes sense. Also, the NRL hate us, and have shown time and time again that lip service is all they are capable of. So it'll never happen, in either league. Big Bash? Netball? Unlikely, but it won't stop me dreaming of a day where the excitement around today's A-League derby is replicated in other sports. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The market took a beating on Wednesday, led by large cap artificial intelligence-related stocks on the back of heavy losses by tech stocks on Wall Street overnight amid investor concerns of an A-I bubble. MOFA still in talks with Estonia over opening reciprocal offices Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung says the government is still in talks with Estonia on the "name and legal status" related to setting up reciprocal (互惠的) representative offices. Speaking during a legislative hearing, Lin said the ongoing talks are focusing on issues such as the title of the representative offices, their legal status, and other concerns related to diplomatic immunity and privileges. The statement follows reports that the government is hoping the office will follow the formula of its counterpart in Lithuania, called the "Taiwanese Representative Office in Lithuania." However, Estonia is reportedly insisting on using the title "Taipei" due to concerns about a backlash from China. DPP claims 'most' people oppose opposition pension proposals The D-P-P legislative caucus says a recent survey shows a majority (多數) of people oppose bills proposed by the K-M-T to end annual cuts to civil servant pensions. The survey was conducted by the D-P-P. According to D-P-P lawmaker Wu Si-yao, it found that 59.7-per cent of respondents supported continuing pension reforms initiated by the D-P-P in 2016, while only 31.7-per cent thought they should be stopped. Wu says stopping reforms will exacerbate inequality between active and retired workers, civil servants and workers receiving labor, farmer and national pensions. The K-M-T legislative caucus has placed the bills at the top of its priority for the current legislative session. Philippine Typhoon Death Toll Rises Philippine officials say the death toll from flooding and damage caused by Typhoon Kalmaegi has risen to at least 114. Kalmaegi moved away from western Palawan province into the South China Sea before noon Wednesday and was heading toward Vietnam. A view Australia's recent military alliance with Papua New Guinea could be the springboard for a wider 'Pacific Eyes' alliance. Australian think-tank Lowy Institute's proposing an intelligence sharing agreement between us, Australia, PNG and Fiji to counter China's influence in the region. It claims it'd also help tackle trans-national crime and climate-related disasters. Former Defence Minister Wayne Mapp says it would be a tough deal to negotiate, but it's feasible. He says Australia's alliance is about sharing more intelligence and cooperating more, like this proposed deal. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of The Patrick Madrid Show, Patrick shares inspiring details from Pope Leo XIV’s historic canonization of seven new saints at St. Peter’s Square – an event that drew 70,000 faithful. Among them were the first saints from Venezuela and Papua New Guinea, including St. Peter To Rot, martyred for defending Christian marriage during World War II, and St. José Gregorio Hernández, the beloved “Doctor of the Poor.” Also canonized was St. Bartolo Longo, a former Satanist turned zealous apostle of the Rosary who built the famous Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii. Patrick shares each saint’s extraordinary witness of faith – from the rainforest missions of St. Maria Troncatti to the charitable works of St. Vincenza Maria Poloni and St. Maria del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, who overcame disability to found a religious order.

Friends of the Rosary,Yesterday, in St. Peter's Square, Rome, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed seven new saints, “witnesses who with God's grace, kept the lamp of faith burning.”“They became lamps capable of spreading the light of Christ,” the Holy Father said in his homily.“May their intercession assist us in our trials and their example inspire us in our shared vocation to holiness,” he said.During the canonization Mass, unfolded under a bright Roman sun, the Pope declared the first two Venezuelan saints: St. José Gregorio Hernández Cisneros, known as “the doctor of the poor,” and St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, a religious sister born without her left arm who went on to found the Servants of Jesus in Caracas in 1965.Among the new saints were also two martyrs. St. Peter To Rot, a lay catechist martyred in Papua New Guinea during the Japanese occupation in World War II, became the country's first saint. To Rot defied Japanese authorities who permitted polygamy, defending Christian marriage until his death.St. Ignatius Maloyan, an Armenian Catholic archbishop, was executed during the Armenian genocide after refusing to convert to Islam. “I consider the shedding of my blood for my faith to be the sweetest desire of my heart,” Maloyan said before his death. “If I am tortured for the love of him who died for me, I will be among those who will have joy and bliss, and I will have obtained to see my Lord and my God.”Among the most well-known of the new saints is St. Bartolo Longo, a 19th-century Italian lawyer who was Satanic before returning to the Church with zeal. After his conversion, Bartolo Longo became the Apostle of the Rosary, dedicating his life to promoting the rosary and building the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary in Pompeii, now one of Italy's most beloved Marian pilgrimage sites. In his homily, Pope Leo XVI said that “what is most precious in the Lord's eyes” is “faith, namely, the bond of love between God and man.”“Our relationship with God is of the utmost importance because at the beginning of time he created all things out of nothing and, at the end of time, he will save mortal beings from nothingness,” the pope said. “A world without faith, then, would be populated by children living without a Father, that is, by creatures without salvation.”In addition to Venezuela's St. María del Carmen Rendiles Martínez, the Italian foundress St. Vincenza Maria Poloni was also canonized. Poloni founded the Sisters of Mercy of Verona and is remembered for her tireless service to the poor, even risking her life during the cholera epidemic of 1836.Pope Leo also canonized St. Maria Troncatti, an Italian Salesian sister who spent 44 years as a missionary among the Indigenous Shuar people in Ecuador's Amazon rainforest. Known affectionately as “Madrecita,” or “little mother,” she served as a nurse, surgeon, and catechist with missionary zeal. The canonization coincided with World Mission Sunday. Before praying the Angelus, Pope Leo XIV, who was once an Augustinian missionary himself in Peru, urged the faithful to pray for today's missionaries.Today, October 20, we celebrate the feast day of St. Paul of the Cross.Ave Maria!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. Please give us the grace to respond with joy!+ Mikel Amigot w/ María Blanca | RosaryNetwork.com, New YorkEnhance your faith with the new Holy Rosary University app:Apple iOS | New! The picture depicts a Sudanese feast, where various food items are laid on an outstretched tablecloth on the ground to serve men dressed in formal attire. Only the men are eating and when they are sated the women come to eat what is left over. Notice the only the right hands are touching the food. Michael's research applies an evolutionary framework to understand human cooperation, tackling key topics, including: the barriers to cooperation, particularly how different mechanisms of cooperation (such as family ties versus impartial institutions) can potentially undermine each other; the impact of cultural differences on psychology and behavior; the processes of social learning; and how these learning processes drive innovation and cultural change. His research and interviews have appeared in outlets including CNN, BBC, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist, Scientific American, PBS, Vice, Newsweek, Time, New York Magazine, Nature News, Science News, The Times, The Telegraph, and The Guardian. The boys are back for another episode of The Journos! Adam Peacock is joined by Michael Chammas and Danny Weidler! Chammas was just in Papua New Guinea for the Prime Minister's XIII game and explains the NRL's and the local government's plans for how they will accommodate players and their families. It's much grander than you think! Whilst Chammas goes into detail at how much money the players will be making... and guess what?... It's a lot more than you think!!! The Ashes are right around the corner and neither Chammy or Weidler are keen to spend a month on tour together! Willie Peters is the name on everyone's lips! So when do we expect him to be in the NRL? Jarome Luai's already playing some mind games with the Wests Tigers around his contract clauses but could the club also be forced to part ways with young gun Jahream Bula? The Dragons had the feel good story of 2025 with Cody Ramsey, who dodged potential death to get his career back on track! But the homegrown talent rejected the club to stay to sign with the Sydney Roosters... how did that even happen? Weidler revealed his list of awards for 2025 but the other boys give him a hard time for his efforts in trying to be an AFL reporter earlier in the week! Today, I'm beyond thrilled to introduce someone who is not only a missionary hero of the faith, but a personal friend and role model, Anna Russell.Anna is a seasoned missionary who, alongside her husband Jason Russell, has served the people of Papua New Guinea for an incredible 25 years. She's a mother of five, a teacher, a soul winner, and a living testimony of what it looks like to faithfully abide in Christ through the decades. One of the many things I love about Anna is the beautiful balance she carries: a quiet strength wrapped in humble submission. Whether you're sitting across the table from her or reading an update letter from their time on the mission field, you sense the presence of a woman who truly walks with God. I treasure every moment I get to spend with her.Over the years, the Lord has used Anna and her family in mighty ways. They've started 13 churches across Papua New Guinea. Their ministry has seen incredible transformation stories, like Brother Eddie, Brother Aaron, and Brother Busman. All once lost in addiction, now saved, discipled, and pastoring churches themselves. One of the most exciting ministries they're involved in is CRE, Christian Religious Education, a public school outreach that brings Biblical teaching to children weekly, sowing seeds that are already bearing fruit. And yes, for those wondering Anna's favorite local dish, its coconut sago stick with hot milk tea and deer stew.Today, we're going to hear about Anna's journey, the ups and down of the mission field, and how she continues to find strength in abiding with Jesus—every single day. You are going to be encouraged by the heart and life of Anna Russell. So, are you ready to be encouraged and equipped to abide in Christ? Let's get into the heart of today's episode.RESOURCES:By Searching - Book by Isobel KuhnIn the Arena - Book by Isobel KuhnTEAM:Podcast Facilitator - Mrs Tammy Goddard Host - Jennifer BeilSocial Media Director - Lisa Grubb Music Coordinator - Lindsey Osgood Resource Promoter - Connie MarrujoFOLLOW US:InstagramFacebookWebpageYouTube

It's so big, honestly, it's just ridiculous: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we have suggestions from Oz, Sam, and Brody, with some interesting mammals! Let's start with Brody's suggestion, the wallaby! It's been a while since we talked about the wallaby, which is an adorable marsupial closely related to the kangaroo. It's native to Australia and New Guinea, although not every animal that's called a wallaby is actually part of the family Macropodidae. One thing everyone knows about kangaroos, which is also true for wallabies, is that they hop instead of running. Their hind legs are extremely strong with big feet, and in fact the word Macropodidae means big feet. The animal hops by leaning forward and jumping, with its big hind feet leaving the ground at about the same time, and landing at the same time too before it bounces again. Its big tail helps it balance. We talked about the wallaby last in episode 390, so let's learn about some species of wallaby that we didn't talk about then. For example, the spectacled hare-wallaby. It's a small species that's common in northern Australia and parts of Papua New Guinea. It's active at night and is mostly solitary, so unless you're wandering around at night you might not have seen one. It's called the spectacled hare-wallaby because it has orange-colored fur around its eyes so that it looks sort of like it's wearing glasses. The rest of its fur is brown, gray, and golden. Its ears are small and its tail and hind legs are very long, with short little front legs. It's very cute. The spectacled hare-wallaby prefers sandy or stony areas, like dunes and shrubland, where it can find lots of plants to eat but can easily hop away if it spots a predator. It's smaller than a domestic cat, but it can travel incredibly fast when it wants to. If you live along the eastern part of Australia, you might have seen the swamp wallaby, also called the black wallaby because it's mostly dark gray or gray-brown in color, often with a white tip to the tail. It's stocky and much larger than the spectacled hare-wallaby, almost three feet tall, or 85 cm, when it's sitting up. It doesn't just live in swamps but also likes forests and other areas with lots of places to hide. Unlike the spectacled hare-wallaby, it's not that fast and can't always outrun potential predators, but it's good at hiding because its fur is so dark. Most wallabies are grazers, meaning they mainly eat grass, but the swamp wallaby is a browser. Instead of having grinding teeth to break down grass, its teeth are sharper for cutting through plant material like bushes, shrubs, and ferns. The swamp wallaby will even use its front legs to pull branches into reach so it can eat the leaves. Wallabies are marsupials, meaning the babies are born extremely early by our standards, crawl into the mother's pouch and clamp onto a teat, and continue to develop in the pouch. Wallabies usually only have one baby at a time, but the mother swamp wallaby has two babies in its pouch almost all its adult life. The swamp wallaby has two uteruses, and a few days before the first baby is ready to be born, the female comes into estrus again, meaning she's ready to mate. By the time her first baby is born, she's already pregnant with her second baby. When the second baby is born, the first baby is old enough that's it doesn't spend all the time in the pouch—but by then,
