Humans are constantly getting better at fighting cancer. Our understanding of the suite of diseases is more robust, our technology is more advanced, and our public health systems are more efficient. But cancer epidemiologist Professor Karen Canfell says Australia will still see more and more incidences of cancer over time. But Australia’s also on track to become the first country to eliminate cervical cancer, the fourth-most common cancer in women. Karen says that our fight against cervical cancer can teach us how to beat other diseases, too. Crucially, it can also teach us how to help our closest neighbours: cervical cancer is low on Australia’s list of most deadly cancers, and yet it’s at the top of the list in Papua New Guinea. Why would someone who watched one deep-sea mining company collapse go back and try it again? That's the question at the center of this episode, and it's not hypothetical. It happened, with the same industry, some of the same licenses, and the same person at the center of it: Gerard Barron, now CEO of The Metals Company (TMC), one of the most prominent and best-funded companies pushing to start commercial deep-sea mining today. This isn't framed as an accusation against Barron specifically. It's a documented sequence of decisions, and by the end, you can decide for yourself what the motive looks like. Before TMC, Barron was an early investor and promoter behind Nautilus Minerals, a company that pursued seafloor mineral deposits off Papua New Guinea. Nautilus raised hundreds of millions of dollars, including investment from the PNG government itself, before its costs spiraled, it was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange, and it filed for bankruptcy in 2019. Barron reportedly sold his shares years before the collapse, walking away with a return as high as $30 million, while PNG's government and environment were left holding the damage. Years later, people connected to Nautilus, including Barron, regrouped as Deep Green, which became The Metals Company, and picked up exploration rights in the Clarion Clipperton Zone that had once belonged to Nautilus. This episode traces that arc from Adstream to Nautilus to TMC, including TMC's push to trigger the ISA's two-year rule, its more recent pursuit of a US mining permit outside the International Seabed Authority process entirely, and Barron's consistent argument that mining the seabed is less environmentally damaging than mining on land. Whether that comparison holds up, and what it means that the environmental cost of Nautilus's failure barely factors into how Barron talks about it now, is the thread running through the whole story. Takeaways Gerard Barron, now CEO of The Metals Company (TMC), was an early investor and promoter (not CEO) behind an earlier deep-sea mining venture, Nautilus Minerals, which went bankrupt in 2019. Nautilus's projected operating costs of about $70 per ton reportedly grew to about $192 per ton, contributing to its delisting from the Toronto Stock Exchange and eventual bankruptcy. Papua New Guinea's government invested in Nautilus and, according to the country's prime minister, the country spent roughly 300 million Kina (about $72 million USD) on a project later called a "total failure." Barron sold his Nautilus shares years before the company's collapse, reportedly for as much as $30 million, while PNG's government was still invested. TMC, which Barron now leads, is pursuing a US permitting path through NOAA and the Trump administration, outside the ISA process. Long-term recovery data on deep-sea mining damage remains limited; some studies cited in the episode indicate no biodiversity recovery three to four years after mining activity occurred. Barron has publicly compared seabed mining favorably to land-based mining, but a specific biomass figure he's cited in at least one interview is disputed in this episode as inaccurate. Amy Gross was born on Long Island, New York, and received her BFA from the Cooper Union in New York City. After a residency at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, she started a graphic design company, and worked as a surface designer, specializing in textiles, children's products and toy design. In 2000 she moved to South Florida, and fascinated by the subtropical environment and the intricate natural growth there, began making hand-beaded jewelry. Her work expanded to embroidered canvases, then sculpture merging observed natural elements with invented life forms. In 2006, Gross received a grant from the South Florida Cultural Consortium, was the finalist for the Southern Prize in 2019, and received an Artist Innovation Fellowship in 2020. Her mixed media sculpture is represented by Momentum Gallery in Asheville, NC. Selected exhibits include the Craft and Folk Art Museum of Los Angeles, The Minnesota Museum of Art, the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum, the Asheville Art Museum, the Boca Raton Museum of Art, The Bascom Center, and fairs Art Wynwood and SOFA. Her shadowboxes are part of the permanent collection of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and, as part of the Art in Embassies program, installed in the new American Embassy in Papua New Guinea. Her work has appeared in Fiber Arts Magazine, American Craft Magazine, The Washington Post, Luxe Magazine, Create Magazine and the art and culture blogs Colossal TreeHugger, ArtMag and The Jealous Curator. She was featured in an article in the Spring 2016 issue of Fiber Art Now Magazine, and was the issue's cover artist. She appears in three Schiffer Press books, Artistry in Fiber, Sculpture, Dimensional Cloth, Sculpture by Contemporary Textile Artists, and Stitched: Journeys with Birds. On July 6, a Chinese submarine fired a nuclear-capable ballistic missile out of the South China Sea. It likely overflew parts of the Philippines before coming down in waters between Tuvalu, Nauru and Solomon Islands, inside the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone. The 14 Pacific Island countries in whose region it landed were almost entirely skipped in Beijing's notifications. A month later, when Pacific Islands Forum foreign ministers met in Fiji, two of its members held up the response text.Kathryn Paik of the Center for Strategic and International Studies joins Ray Powell and Jim Carouso to explain what Beijing was signaling, and why the Pacific Island Countries couldn't answer with one voice. Thursday, 13 August 2026 Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.”' Matthew 22:4 “Again, he sent other servants, saying, ‘You say to those ‘having been called', “You behold, the ‘brunch, mine' I prepared, the ‘oxen, mine' and the fatted have been sacrificed, and all – readied. You come to the nuptials!”'” (CG) In the previous verse, Jesus continued the parable of the wedding feast, saying that the servants were sent out to those who had been called, but that none were willing to come. He continues now, saying, “Again, he sent other servants, saying.” The word allos is used. It signifies others of the same kind. They were different servants, but they possessed the same characteristics as the first. Their instructions begin with, “You say to those ‘having been called'.” As in the previous verse, the perfect participle is used, indicating those of Israel. They had been called previously, and that calling continued until that day. When they go to these people, they are to say, “You behold, the ‘brunch, mine' I prepared.” This is a new word, ariston. It will be seen a total of three times, once here and twice in Luke. Its meaning is debated. Strong says, “the best meal (or breakfast; perhaps from eri (‘early')), i.e. Luncheon -- dinner.” HELPS Word Studies says, “...(literally, ‘without boundary, designation') – properly, ‘undetermined,' referring to the meal eaten anytime before the main meal (i.e. ‘supper,').” A word that will adequately convey any of the meanings is brunch. Along with that, they are to proclaim, “the ‘oxen, mine' and the fatted have been sacrificed.” Three more new words are seen. The first is tauros, a bull or ox. This is probably etymologically connected to the Aramaic word tor, a bull. That, in turn, is connected to the Hebrew shor, a bullock. One can see the Greek root of Ford's Taraus model car, most of which have been turned into paper clips and razor blades at this point. The second word is sitistos, a fatling. It is derived from sitos, grain. Thus, it is a grain-fed animal purposely raised for such feasts. This is its only use in the New Testament. The third new word is thuó, to kill as a sacrifice. HELPS Word Studies says, “...to kill as a sacrifice and offer on an altar. 2380 /thýō (‘sacrifice') means more than ‘kill' as it also suggests offering something as a spiritual sacrifice.” Along with these things, a note of urgency is given, “and all – readied.” A final new word is seen, hetoimos, adjusted, ready, prepared, etc. It signifies that the necessary preparations are complete to meet an intended purpose. With that noted, imperative words of petition are laid forth, “You come to the nuptials!” One can hear the plea, almost of desperation. “I have done everything for you to join me to share in this marvelous celebration. You gotta come, you just gotta!” Life application: The words of Isaiah 65:2 come directly into focus – “I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, Who walk in a way that is not good.” It is as if the Lord is standing there, pleading with the people with His arms and hands extended. This continued for generation after generation. When Jesus came, the appeal continued to be made. At some point, anyone would say, “This simply isn't working.” This is a truth that has to be considered in the world at large. The Lord, through the gospel, has been pleading with the people of the world to come to Him. But there is one point to consider that cannot be overlooked. In the parable, God sent out servants. This was once active. Jesus commissioned disciples and apostles to go out and spread the word. Now, though active in the sense that we are instructed in the word to send out the message (as in Romans 10), it is also something that is only hoped for in the sense that God doesn't come into our house and say, “Ok, John, you need to go to Papua New Guinea and share the gospel.” Rather, He relies on us to accept that His word is directive in this manner and that we will comply with what it says. It doesn't take any effort to hand out a gospel tract, open your mouth at work to tell associates about your faith, or to live responsibly as a Christian, filled with the joy of the Lord, so that others will see and want to know about what you possess. If you are a saved believer in Jesus, God desires to make His appeal to the people of the world through you. Are you willing to comply with His will? If not, you will stand before Him and give a reckoning of your life. There will be loss in such matters. Don't suffer loss. Be one who is rewarded richly for complying with the will of God by sharing your faith with others. Lord God, help us in the duty we are called to perform in conveying the good news of Jesus to others. May we be diligent in our efforts, carefully and meticulously finding others who need to hear this good news. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

He qualified as a pilot before completing his studies and returning to Australia, where he inaugurated parachute instruction within the RAAF and made the country's first freefall descent from a military aircraft in 1926. The following year, he led a three-month survey flight to Papua New Guinea.Wackett became the RAAF's senior engineer with his appointment as Director of Technical Services in 1935. A wing commander at the outbreak of World War II, he rose to air commodore by 1942 and assumed the role of Air Member for Engineering and Maintenance. He established the Technical Branch as a separate department of the RAAF in 1948, and was promoted to air vice-marshal the same year. Wackett served as Air Member for Technical Services until leaving the military in 1959, having been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Companion of the Order of the Bath. From 1960 to 1968, he was a member of the Australian National Airlines Commission, parent of Trans Australia Airlines. Walking sharks are one of the strangest small predators on the reef: pectoral fins built for crawling across coral flats at low tide, distributions so narrow some species live in a single bay, and a family tree that's still being filled in. In this episode, Andrew Lewin and Dr. David Ebert are joined by Jess Blakeway, a PhD candidate at the University of the Sunshine Coast, whose research on the distribution, ecology, and biology of walking sharks (genus Hemiscyllium) in Papua New Guinea has already led to a new species discovery. Jess walks through her path from volunteering with sea turtles in PNG to noticing a walking shark outside its known range, emailing shark scientist Christine Dudgeon out of the blue, and eventually joining her as a PhD student. That relationship led to the description of Hemiscyllium dudgeonae, or Dudgeon's walking shark, named in honor of her supervisor. Jess and the hosts also dig into why these sharks have such tiny, non-overlapping ranges, how researchers tell nearly identical-looking species apart using color pattern, genetics, and geography, and the ongoing mix-up between "zebra sharks" and "leopard sharks," which turn out to be the same animal at different life stages. It's a fun, detail-rich conversation about what it actually looks like to find a new species in the field, what happens after that moment (specimen collection, museum deposits, taxonomic description), and what Jess has planned for her postdoc research. Takeaways: Papua New Guinea and northern Australia are home to all 10 known species of walking shark, each with a highly restricted range shaped by deep-water barriers, freshwater outflows, and shallow-water habitat limits. Outcrop Silver reported high-grade results from the Morena and Aguilar targets at its Santa Ana silver-gold project in Colombia. Asante Gold updated the mineral inventories at its Bibiani and Chirano mines in Ghana, reporting a combined 4.6 million ounces of measured and indicated resources, plus 1.8 million inferred ounces. Osisko Gold reported drilling from the Proserpine target, seven kilometres southeast of its Cariboo Gold deposit in British Columbia. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2 ESV). In the fourteenth chapter of John, Jesus told His followers He was leaving them to prepare a place for them and that He would return and take them with Him so that they would always be with Him. He called this place that He was preparing a mansion with many rooms, and, in my understanding of Scripture, Jesus might’ve downplayed it a little about what truly awaits us in this place He’s preparing for us. I wonder if we really think about His promise to return, and if what awaits us in heaven is really impacting our lives and our longings. I once heard an author and speaker say that our frustration—at heartache, pain and suffering, struggling to attain perfect love, and even striving for a more fulfilling relationship with God—is to be expected because “this life on earth is not the way it was supposed to be. Our former address was Paradise.” When my husband, Hugh, visited the remote jungles of Papua New Guinea several years ago, he observed something peculiar and wonderful about the Iteri people. These tribesmen, in a church established years earlier by American missionaries, were a people obsessed with heaven. When my husband—an American man who was schooled in the knowledge of the Scriptures—came to speak at the little Iteri church, the natives bombarded him with questions, but not about doctrines or dispensations, interpretations, or translations. They wanted to know more about heaven. Lon, the American missionary to the Iteri people, attempted to explain to my husband the people’s particular obsession with eternity. Because the Iteri people dealt with so much suffering, saw so many of their loved ones die, and had such a high mortality rate there in the jungle, the life to come was all they really cared about. When I heard that, I thought about how it must touch our Creator’s heart to know that, somewhere in this world, some of His loved ones truly long to be home. Intersecting Faith & Life: When my husband recounted the Iteri’s questions to me, my heart grieved over my own contentment with this earth, to the detriment of my longing for heaven. Why isn’t heaven all I think about? Why do I not long more to be in the presence of my Savior, to be away from the pain and the temporary and the often meaninglessness of this world, and to be complete and whole, and by His side as I was created to be? In what ways have I grown too comfortable in this world and forgotten that my real home is in heaven? What cheap substitutes for heaven have I settled for? In Colossians 3:1-2, we are instructed, as followers of Christ, to seek the things above—in heaven—where Christ is, and to set our minds on things above, not on things that are on earth. And in Matthew 6:19-20, Jesus said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.” Those are commands and exhortations to be eternally minded, to be preoccupied with heaven, and to set our hearts and our desires there for the health of our souls, for proper order of our values, and for our inexplicable joy. Oh, to have a longing to be with the Maker of my soul… to long for Him as much as He longs for me. It’s clear to me today that my longing for Heaven is directly proportionate to my longing for Christ. Lord, give me a longing for the day I will be in perfect communion with You – no distractions, no other loves to steal my heart away, just You and me. For eternity. Two weeks ago, a PLA Navy submarine in the South China Sea test-fired a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile that flew 7,300 kilometers before splashing down in the South Pacific. The launch drew sharp criticism from several Pacific Island countries, whose leaders argued that it violated the region's longstanding identity as a nuclear-free zone. To be clear, the test did not violate international law or established norms. The United States, France, and other nuclear powers have conducted similar missile tests in the Pacific for decades. Even so, Zhang Denghua, a senior research fellow at the Australian National University's Department of Pacific Affairs and CGSP's non-resident fellow for the Pacific, argues that the launch could erode Beijing's hard-earned influence in the region. He joins Eric to discuss the strategic implications of the test, China's intensifying competition with traditional powers in the Pacific, and why Taiwan remains such a potent issue for Beijing in this part of the world.
