Cuba is spiraling into a humanitarian crisis. The country's long-standing economic and political turmoil reached new heights this week as the effects of the Trump administration's oil blockade took hold.The president's targeting of Cuba is part of the administration's broader attacks on the region, where the U.S. kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores earlier this year and has executed more than 140 people in boat strikes.As the U.S. hurtles toward war with Iran and further military action in the Middle East and continues to fund Israel's genocide in Gaza, Cuba is just the latest foreign policy arena where the Trump administration has further ensnared the U.S. This week on The Intercept Briefing, senior politics reporter Akela Lacy speaks with fellow reporter Jonah Valdez about how U.S. foreign policy is impacting the upcoming midterm elections and Valdez's recent reporting on how a new anti-Zionist PAC has associated with influencers that have made statements that are outright antisemitic. Lacy also speaks to University of Miami history professor Michael Bustamante and Andrés Pertierra, a historian of Cuba specializing in post-1959 regime durability, about the crisis unfolding in Cuba.Missing from mainstream news coverage of Trump's attacks on Cuba and U.S. efforts to impose regime change in the region is a recognition of how Trump's policies fit into his attacks on immigrants in the U.S., Bustamante says.“One of the, I think, subtext of why this administration might be keen on government change in Cuba, like in Venezuela, it's not just about being able to plant the flag and say, ‘We buried communism in the Americas. Something that no other president could do,'” Bustamante says. “It's also about, we can deport more people. And we can deport more people. And so how does the Cuban American community react to that? That, I think, is an open question. Something that I haven't seen linked yet to the conversation about regime change, per se.”The Trump administration's strategy is likely to backfire, Pertierra says.“You don't get long-term cooperation stability through fear,” he says. “So I don't think it's actually going to solidify the U.S. position in Latin America. On Christmas Eve 2015, 71-year-old Schertz businessman Henry Manuel Gutierrez, Jr. was found shot multiple times inside his home along FM 3009, near the yard of his company, Bexar Waste. His son discovered him seated in a recliner, partially covered by a blanket, in what investigators described as an execution-style killing.Henry was in the midst of negotiating the multimillion-dollar sale of Bexar Waste to Republic Services at the time of his death. His estate was valued at approximately $14.6 million. An active civil lawsuit alleging a handshake agreement over future sale proceeds added financial tension to an already complex landscape.The home appeared rummaged through. Missing items included cash, his wallet, several Christmas gift cards, a distinctive sterling silver ring, and his white Ford Expedition, later recovered in San Marcos without usable forensic evidence. Some of the stolen gift cards surfaced in Houston days later.Investigators collected shell casings, an unknown fingerprint, and DNA, but no public forensic link has tied any suspect to the crime. Questions arose about the early handling of the scene and the delayed involvement of the Texas Rangers.Over the years, police interviewed roughly 100 individuals connected to Henry's business and personal life. Persons of interest have been identified but not publicly named.In 2022, the case was officially designated a cold case. In 2024, authorities announced a new person of interest developed through renewed investigation efforts. Six teenage boys left a house party in Pickering, Ontario, in the early hours of March 17, 1995, and vanished without a trace. Durham Regional Police settled on a theory almost immediately — the boys stole a boat, went joyriding on the frigid waters of Lake Ontario, and drowned. Case closed.Except it wasn't. Not even close.In this episode, we go beyond the official narrative and dig into the facts that never made the headlines. The details that got buried, ignored, or actively suppressed.We examine why Jay Boyle called his girlfriend at 1:30 a.m. and told her he was coming to her apartment — only to never arrive. We break down the surveillance footage that only captured three of the six boys at the marina, while the other three were never seen on camera at all. We look at evidence suggesting Danny Higgins, the youngest of the group, may not have even been with the others when they disappeared.We cover the two girlfriends who called police at 3:30 a.m. to report the boys missing — and were dismissed. The 36-hour delay before any real search began. The sidescan sonar contract that was lined up and then cancelled by Durham Police without explanation. The "unsinkable" boat that was never found. The gas can that turned up on the wrong side of the lake with no water inside it after nearly two weeks adrift. TW - This episode we drop a few 'f' bombs, and a few other words we would not normally use.  But we are dealing with an act of domestic terrorism that has been concealed by polite history.  We discuss the rRise of Black Wall Street in the Greenwood District of Oklahoma.  How discovering oil in the early twenties brought people of all colors to to the young state of Oklahoma unintentionally creating a community of Black entrepreneurs, lawyers, doctors and other professionals,,This created a segregation and suspicion drove them into the community of Greenwood where they built black schools, black theaters, black hotels and black shops.  Their community was so good and prosperous that even whites would shop there when they could get a product better or cheaper.  However, one night, a young man named Dick Rowland who worked in Tulsa had to use the restroom.  Being black, he couldn't go to the bathroom where he worked he had to go to one of the 'Black Only' bathrooms and the closest one was on the top floor of the nearby Drexler Building.  The elevator was operated by one Sarah Page and as Dick rode the elevator, it shook briefly, causing Dick to wobble, he grabbed Sarah's arm to right himself, and Sarah, not expecting the contact, yelled as she was very startled.  That's it...well Dick left the elebator a clerk saaw him and reported the incident to the police.  Police arrested Roland and Black World War I veterans showed up armed, to prevent the vigilante lynch mob from attacking the jail and lynching Dick.  It was this event that set off the Tulsa Race Massacre...an overnight series of assaults, unreasonable arrests, theft, arson and murder that devastated the district of Greenwood.  And we, along with Carmita from Missing in the PNW and Murder in the PNW, tell this true story from the dark history of America and Oklahoma in this 0h-yeah-this-happened, domestic terror and if-this-doesn't-make-your-blood-boil-nothing-will episode of the Family Plot PodcastBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/family-plot--4670465/support.
