One of the ways we bring down all the segulot that come from Birkat HaMazon is by saying it with true feelings of hakarat tov. When a person feels genuine appreciation, the power of his words becomes infinitely greater. When Rabbi Aharon of Belz was younger, he used to stay by a certain butcher. The butcher took such good care of the Rabbi, fulfilling his every request with great joy. Years later, the butcher's daughter suddenly became gravely ill, and the doctors were losing hope. Messages were sent to Gedolim to pray for her, and the butcher specifically asked that a message be sent to Rabbi Aharon of Belz. The messenger arrived by Rabbi Aharon on Erev Yom Tov, when there was already a long line of people waiting to see him. Because the matter was urgent, the messenger was allowed to enter immediately. When the Rabbi heard the news, he was just about to place a cube of sugar into his tea. He stopped, paused what he was doing, and began repeating over and over how much that butcher had taken care of him. He spoke at length about the kindness, the warmth, and the generosity he had experienced. Only when he felt a deep, intense sense of hakarat tov did he give the girl a beracha and pray for her refuah shelema. After Yom Tov, the messenger returned with extraordinary news. The girl had made a complete recovery. He added that they later discovered that at the exact moment the Rabbi had given his beracha, the girl appeared to be in her final moments. But then she related that she had seen, in what seemed like a dream, the Rabbi giving her a piece of sugar to eat while blessing her with the most heartfelt beracha. At that moment, everything changed. Baruch Hashem, she recovered fully. Words said with real hakarat tov are unbelievably powerful. In the first beracha of Birkat HaMazon, we acknowledge that Hashem is the One who gives us our parnasah. We need to understand what that truly means. The Gemara speaks about a Hallel called Hallel HaGadol, the Great Hallel. This is the chapter of Tehillim in which we say "Ki l'olam chasdo" twenty-six times. The Gemara asks why it is called Hallel HaGadol. Rabbi Yochanan answers that it is because it includes the words that Hashem gives food to all of His creations. Hashem, who is exalted beyond all comprehension, who resides in the highest heights, personally comes down and takes care of every single one of His creations, ensuring that they always have what to eat. Hashem does not delegate this responsibility to a messenger. He does it Himself, because He loves us so much. The question is asked: this Hallel mentions so many miracles—creating heaven and earth, the sun and the moon, taking us out of Mitzrayim, splitting the sea, leading us through the desert, defeating Sichon and Og. How can it be that of all these miracles, Hashem giving us food is considered the greatest? The sefer Birkat HaMazon BeKavanah explains that all the other miracles were one-time events. But the miracle of feeding every person and every animal is something Hashem performs every second of every day, from the beginning of time until today and beyond. Hashem is "concerned" that all of His billions and trillions of creations have what they need to live. It is a constant miracle that never stops. They say in the name of the Chafetz Chaim that if a person forgot Al HaNissim in the Amidah, the tefillah still counts. But if he did not say in Modim ועל ניסך שבכל יום…שבכל עת , the Amidah does not count. Missing a miracle that happened once can be excused, but failing to recognize the miracles that occur every single day cannot. Hashem is personally taking care of us at every moment. That is why we emphasize in Birkat HaMazon that Hashem has never made us lacking and will never make us lacking. Once we truly recognize this, only then are we ready to say נודה לך -thank You. Only then can our words of gratitude come from the heart. And the more sincerely we feel that thank You, the more powerful it becomes—and the more blessing it draws down into our lives.

Approachable but still properly mad. Anyway, Steep Stims is great, playful, emotional, one foot in the past and another in the future, really great work that I think will age really well. Solid work Mr Clark. 6 Emptyset - Dissever - Thrill Jockey Records Amazing new record from Emptyset, feels like they took all the lessons from all the later records and applied it to the earlier ones. Beautiful intense grinding drones, like someone built an installation of Sheer Hellish Miasma and I'm somehow in the room with it. 5 Merzbow, Iggor Cavalera, Eraldo Bernocchi - Nocturnal Rainforest - PAN Full disclosure, Iggor sent this to me, but it's been on my repeated listens ever since. Zen-like terror but incredibly dynamic. One of the best noise releases of the year and I'd go as far as to say a career highlight for each of the members. 4 Various Artists - 30 Years Sonic Groove - Sonic Groove Has it really been 30 years of Sonic Groove? Adam X compiles a collection of outstanding producers for this excellent collection of tracks. Highlights include the mutant acid of Bryan Zentz, the incomparable genius of Mike Parker and the industrial brutality of Statiqbloom. 3 Dopplereffekt - Metasymmetry - Tresor The second Tresor release on my list is the mighty Dopplereffekt. Beautiful, futuristic and unmistakably Detroit. Top 3 don't disagree! 2 Maria Somerville - Luster - 4AD Genuinely shocking to hear an artist on 4AD in 2025 that sounds like what an artist on 4AD sounds like in my head and it's great. Melancholic Ambient shoegaze for a new generation. 1 Coil - Black Antlers - Dais Records Black Antlers is not my favorite Coil album, but it is the one I least expected to be reissued as it was originally a tour only CDR that then got expanded. You could argue that it might not count as a proper Coil album, but who has time for these discussions. Some of the best music ever created. Nick (Disfigure; the one on the right in the pic) Favorites: Kommodus - A Foetal Wolf in Stained Glass - Probably my favorite release from Kommodus. Really awesome auxiliary instruments incorporated here and I like the unhinged melodic leads thrown in on a lot of the songs. It has a punkier tinge to it with the guitar tones and the vocals are equally as heavy Fellwinter - Dark Mediaeval Art - Pure riff-centric Judas Iscariot worship Magus Lord - In The Company of Champions - Epic in every way. I liked this better than the Lamp record this year but M has been writing fantastic black metal for a while and this side project is really refreshing to follow Ultimate Disaster - For Progress . . . - Perfectly written D-Beat in my opinion. Very tight songwriting and the riffs and solos are so well executed Valen - Viarum - I'm a huge Thangorodrim fan and this project has reminded me most of that. This was my go-to Dungeon Synth for some epic game nights this year Enceladus - Demo II - Another great release from this project. I love the half time parts, the more death metal sounding vocals, and just the ferocity of the songs while still being melodic Iron Firmament - Arcane Overspill - Amazing black metal from Washington, a state known for churning out amazing black metal for over two decades. I really love the production on this release, especially the interludes. This band writes amazing riffs and this has been a standout for me in their already exceptional discography Sharp Pins - Balloon Balloon Balloon - I love Power pop, I love Guided By Voices and Sharp Pins delivers on all fronts Occult Blood/Carrion Bloom - Battle Cries of Endless Night - Both sides of this split are fantastic. Put out by Wergild who can't miss lately with their bands/releases Utility - S/T - The hometown heroes! The whole release but especially the first song reminds me so much of Fired Up, one of my favorite CT hardcore bands of all time. Great songwriting and also absolutely on point with the energy and vocals. There's a corner of America where people vanish at a startling rate, where massive searches can turn up nothing, no trail, no remains, no answers. That place is Alaska. In this episode of Backwoods Bigfoot Stories, we head into the shadowed heart of the Alaska Triangle, the vast wilderness between Anchorage, Juneau, and Utqiagvik, to explore why so many disappear and why indigenous stories have warned about forest-dwelling abductors for generations.In the summer of twenty twenty-two, sixty-nine-year-old Mary Dawn Wilson drove her Ford Focus nearly seven miles down the Stampede Trail near Healy, Alaska, a rugged route tied to the Into the Wild legend and notorious for swallowing travelers. With a two-year-old child in the back seat, Wilson pushed her vehicle far beyond where it reasonably could go.When the car became stuck in mud, she made a decision no one can explain. She locked the toddler inside the vehicle and walked deeper into the wilderness, away from the highway and toward the interior.Search teams deployed helicopters, thermal imaging, drones, ATVs, and trained dogs. They located Wilson's personal belongings about a mile beyond the stuck car, proof she kept going. After that, the trail went cold. No footprints. No sign. Nothing. After three days, the active search was suspended. Mary Dawn Wilson has never been found.We zoom out to examine the bigger pattern, thousands of disappearances across Alaska over the decades, many ending in complete erasure. We revisit chilling cases tied to the Alaska Triangle, including the nineteen seventy-two disappearance of House Majority Leader Hale Boggs and Alaska Congressman Nick Begich, whose plane was never recovered despite one of the largest search operations in American history. We examine the case of Gary Frank Sotherden, whose skull was found years later with bear tooth marks but little else, no clothing, no gear, no explanation for how he ended up so far from where he was supposed to be.We consider Thomas Anthony Nuzzi, the traveling nurse last seen with an unidentified woman who has never been located, both of them vanishing into the Alaskan night without a trace. And we look at Michael LeMaitre, a marathon runner who vanished during a major, heavily monitored event on a mountainside crowded with other competitors and spectators, disappearing in broad daylight despite sophisticated search technology that should have been able to locate any warm body on that mountain. Alaska Native traditions carry their own explanations for these disappearances, stories of entities that mimic, lure, and take. The Tlingit speak of the Kushtaka, the land otter man, a shapeshifter said to imitate voices and faces to draw victims away from safety. The Yup'ik tell of the Hairy Man they call Miluquyuliq, a powerful forest presence that watches travelers from the treeline with an intensity that goes beyond mere animal curiosity. And the descendants of Portlock speak of the Nantinaq, a predatory figure so feared that locals ultimately abandoned their entire town rather than remain in its territory. By nineteen fifty, every resident had fled, leaving behind homes and livelihoods, choosing displacement over whatever stalked them from the surrounding forest. We also touch on modern reports, including sightings documented by the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization across Alaska, encounters with massive bipedal creatures covered in dark fur that emit strange vocalizations and watch humans with unsettling intelligence. These accounts span decades and come from experienced outdoorsmen, truckers, hunters, and others who know the difference between known wildlife and something else entirely.At the center of this episode lies an unsettling question that may never be answered. What made Mary Dawn Wilson walk the wrong way, into the deep, after leaving a child behind? She was no naive tourist. She knew the Alaskan wilderness, had lived in remote areas, understood the dangers. Yet something compelled her to drive down that haunted trail, to keep going when any sensible person would turn back, and finally to walk away from her stuck vehicle in the opposite direction of safety. Did she experience a medical crisis that impaired her judgment? Did the wilderness itself disorient her?Or did she see something, hear something, follow something that called to her from the trees?The Tlingit have always warned their children about the Kushtaka's ability to mimic familiar voices, to appear as loved ones, to promise help while leading victims to their doom. The people of Portlock knew something was hunting them long before they abandoned their homes. And Mary Dawn Wilson, walking deeper into the Alaskan interior on that July afternoon, may have encountered whatever it is that has been taking people from this land for longer than anyone can remember.Mary Dawn Wilson was four feet ten inches tall, weighed one hundred sixty pounds, and had gray hair and blue eyes with a small scar on her left ear. She was wearing a floral dress and a cream-colored kuspuk with green flowers when she disappeared. Her case remains open. December 31, 2025 - Season 16, Episode 71 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Wednesday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right into talking about the latest news concerning Pittsburgh Steelers as they start preparing for their Week 18 home game against the Baltimore Ravens. We also discuss what Tomlin had to say about the possible return this week from injuries of OLB T.J. Watt (lung), G Isaac Seumalo, and WR Calvin Austin III (hamstring). Tomlin talked about the limited usage of WR Roman Wilson in Week 17, so we discuss his answer on that topic. We also talk about what Tomlin had to say about the usage of TE Pat Freiermuth and TE Jonnu Smith, both in Week 17 and moving forward into the regular season finale against the Ravens. Former Steelers WR Hines Ward once again failed to be named a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalists this past week, so Alex and I discuss that news. We go over what might be needed moving forward to at least see Ward named a finalist in the coming years. Alex and I begin our weekly recap of the All-22 tape of the Steelers' last game, the Sunday afternoon road win against the Cleveland Browns. We start on the offensive side of the football and spend a lot of time discussing the play of several individual players. We review, in detail, the play of QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling against the Browns. We also make sure to focus tighter on the final three offensive possessions the Steelers had against Cleveland. After thoroughly discussing the offensive tape from Week 17, Alex and I then do the same when it comes to the defensive side of the football. We discuss the Steelers defense having a good game overall after a shaky start in the contest, which resulted in the Browns jumping out to a 10-0 lead.
