Welcome to Music Connects People, the podcast where we talk to the people and artists that bring people together through music. This episode is one from the archives, an interview with Micky Dolenz, the drummer and vocalist of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame deserving but not yet inducted Monkees. This is from November of 2014 so some of the material will be dated but Micky’s take on his relationship with his fans fits right in with the theme of this podcast. As for the interview, it was one that was used as a reason to terminate a job I held at a local YMCA as executive director. Micky’s manager called me at work and since I did not recognize the number I answered it thinking there may have been a family emergency. In my termination papers they cited Micky Dolenz by name, and that I took the call and conducted the interview during my regular work hours, even though I was a salaried employee and conducted the interview during my lunch hour and off-site.One other little tidbit, for some reason I was convinced that I had read somewhere that Henry Winkler grew up in Niagara Falls NY. That is not the case, and I still have no clue how that fake fact popped into my head. Of course Micky cleared up a few rumors in this episode, so it all worked out.I want to give special thanks to my friend and Monkee fan Peggy Barringer. She is the one I reference twice. I also have a second interview that I conducted with Micky that I will likely use for my other podcast- NIght and Day.Please email any comments to thom@caroniamediagroup.comThe theme music in this episode is from Forget the Elephant.

Singer- songwriter Kasim Sulton is best known for his stint in Utopia along with Todd Rundgren, Roger Powell and Willie Wilcox. The addition of Sulton to the Utopia lineup in 1976 added a powerful singing voice that helped define the band’s sound as they evolved from a proggy collective to a tight four piece unit.Sulton provided the lead vocals for the band’s biggest commercial hit, “Set Me Free.” The band built a loyal following of Utopians during their ten years together, an era that produced eight studio albums and saw the band criss-cross the country every year.In 2017, Sulton formed Kasim Sulton’s Utopia, for a series of sold-out shows featuring songs from the classic four piece lineup of the band. Kasim is bringing the shows out again, this time with Gil Assayas on keyboards, who toured last year as part of Todd Rundgren’s Utopia.Kasim’s work goes well beyond Utopia, and includes session and live work with Meat Loaf, Cheap Trick, Hall and Oates and Meat Loaf, just to name a few.Kasim continues to perform with Todd Rundgren, and finds time to record and perform solo material. When it comes to bringing people together, Kasim is one of the most accessible and fan-friendly artists around. A Facebook group, This must be love, named after an early solo song follows his career, and Kasim often interacts with fans, doing live Facebook events and video updates from the road on his own page.To contact the host: email thom@caroniamediagroup.com
This week’s episode features a conversation with Chris Vos of The Record Company. Formed in Los Angeles in 2011, The Record Company has quickly established themselves as one of the best live bands around. The three-piece band combines the sounds of great American blues and punk bands. They have truly forged a unique sound that has already brought together a strong fan base. I was introduced to The Record Company by my sister Kathleen, and in 2018 we were able to connect in Atlanta Georgia and catch an amazing live performance from the band. Even though my sister and I live 900 miles apart, the music of The Record Company brings us together. When we went to see the Record Company in Atlanta my good friend Jack and I flew down to Atlanta from Buffalo and saw the show with my sister, brother-in-law, my niece and her fiancée and my friend Jack. In addition to being a great performer, Chris Vos is clearly a humble and introspective musician. He loves his fans, his band and the fact that he is grateful for what he does. I hope you enjoy this interview along with some selections from The Record Company’s latest album.
