The Yardbird's Godfrey Townsend is Living a Rock 'n Roll Wet Dream Fourth time IS the charm. After way too many reschedulings, as with all things, this conversation with the Yardbirds' Godfrey Townsend happened exactly when it was intended. Lightning doesn't strike the same spot twice, and this was an electric circus of talk and music perfection. From jumping in at the opening with The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, to Godfrey's masterpiece of Jeff Beck's, Cause We've Ended as Lovers, from Blow by Blow, which cracked my heart open and left me with goosebumps, in tears… to every single moment in between, this was heaven. I've fostered my share of conversations that have blown my mind; this is amongst the best of the best. For a girl whose moniker was RockGirl back in the day when Godfrey and I met decades ago, this conversation was truly a Rock 'N Roll wet dream. Godfrey not only shares stories with Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Alan Parsons, Mark Farner, Dave Mason, Joey Molland, Todd Rundgren, Howard Kaylan, The Cowsills, Chuck Negron, The Association, Mark Volman… he's played with them all! And his stories and intimate experiences with them left me breathless. And then there's meeting Clapton, his divine private audience with Pete Townshend, his adorable Jimmy Page encounter and impression, meeting Beck! Has any rockin' stone been left unturned? Dammit, I didn't even ask about Mick and Keith! Next time. And there will be a next time. For the two hours of this, I trust there are so many more unmined gems. If rock's your thing, if you lived through the 60s till now, or just dig the music, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200… hit the play button and hunker down for a wild, fun, and wonderful ride. An inside view from an insider. Consider this the audiobook of Godfrey's sure-to-come bestselling rock memoir. Hachachacha! LOVED IT! Godfrey Townsend Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wed, May 6, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET Streamed Live on my FB, YouTube & LinkedIn
This week, one of classic rock's most recognisable voices — singer, guitarist and songwriter Mark Farner, founding member of Grand Funk Railroad. With more than 30 million records sold worldwide, 16 gold and platinum albums and a string of massive hits including “I'm Your Captain,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “The Loco-Motion” and “We're An American Band,” Grand Funk Railroad became one of the biggest rock acts of the '70s. But in this deeply personal conversation, Mark reveals there's far more to his story than stadiums and success.Mark opens up about his childhood in Michigan and the devastating loss of his father when he was just nine years old. He shares how his family's Sunday gospel gatherings, filled with bluegrass music, harmonies and love, became the foundation for both his spirituality and his future career in music. He also talks about his Cherokee ancestry on his mother's side and the powerful influence spirituality had within the family from an early age. You'll hear the extraordinary story of how a young Mark experienced what he describes as a life-changing spiritual moment while watching evangelist Billy Graham on television — a moment that would shape the message and direction of his music for decades to come.Surprisingly, music wasn't Mark's first dream. He had originally planned on a future in football until injuries forced him off the field. That setback led his mother to rent him a guitar and arrange lessons, unknowingly setting him on the path that would eventually change rock history.Mark takes us through the early Michigan band scene, including his time with Terry Knight and the Pack alongside future Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer. He explains how the frustrations of struggling bands, freezing road trips and failed tours eventually led to the formation of Grand Funk Railroad with bassist Mel Schacher. One of the highlights is Mark's vivid recollection of the band's breakthrough appearance at the Atlanta Pop Festival, where three unknown musicians from Flint, Michigan stunned a crowd of 185,000 people and instantly realised their lives had changed forever.Mark also reflects on the unique musical identity of Grand Funk Railroad, explaining how the band's roots were grounded more in soulful R&B than traditional blues or heavy metal. He discusses wanting audiences to dance, feel joy and experience connection through the music. The conversation dives deeply into the creation of the band's most iconic songs. Mark reveals the remarkable spiritual experience that inspired “I'm Your Captain,” describing how the song arrived almost fully formed during a semi-conscious moment in the middle of the night after praying for music that could truly reach people's hearts. He also shares incredible behind-the-scenes stories about recording “The Loco-Motion,” including how producer Todd Rundgren spontaneously decided the band should record the song after hearing them casually singing it outside the studio.Throughout the interview, Mark speaks passionately about the emotional connection between musicians, instruments and songwriting. He explains how specific guitars and keyboards inspired entire songs and albums, including E Pluribus Funk and “Mean Mistreater.”Mark also discusses:The pressures and excitement of massive success in the '70sGrand Funk Railroad being labelled “the loudest band in the world”The unexpected breakup of the band in 1976His Christian music careerCharity work Family life, marriage and staying grounded despite fameWhy spreading love and positivity remains his greatest missionWarm, funny, spiritual and refreshingly honest, Mark Farner proves himself to be far more than simply a rock star. This is an uplifting conversation about resilience, creativity, faith and the enduring power of music to bring people together. If you love classic rock history, candid artist interviews and the stories behind timeless songs, this is an episode you won't want to miss.

It is with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode honoring the passing of another guitar hero giant whose riffs were mighty enough to support Lemmy: Phil Campbell. In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For the past six decades, artists the world over in every artistic medium have used Eno's strategy while attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2026, nihilistic, nerdy nimcompoops and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential theme of their upcoming forty-seventh episode. What happens when a studio prodigy locks himself in a room and decides to play literally every instrument himself? You get Todd Rundgren's sprawling 1972 double album, Something/Anything?. It's an audacious, chaotic blend of perfect power-pop, blue-eyed soul, and bizarre studio experiments. This week, the Random Album Generator serves up a 25-track masterclass in pure musical ego and undeniable genius.Inside This Episode:First Half Reaction: This is a massive double LP, so we're splitting it right down the middle at the end of Disc 1. If you're listening with us, pause after track 13, "Slut." Jeremy and Jon react to the sheer ambition of Rundgren acting as a one-man band, tackling the flawless pop of "I Saw the Light" and the lush, layered ballads.5 Fast Facts: We uncover the insane logistics of tracking every instrument alone, why "Hello It's Me" is actually a cover of his own teenage band, and the hilarious spoken-word studio games Todd hid in the mix.Second Half & Final Thoughts: We flip to Disc 2 and discuss the wild tonal shift of Side 4, where Todd finally brings a full band into the studio for a live, unpolished jam session. The Verdict & Standout Tracks: Narrowing down 25 songs to just 3 standout tracks is brutal, but Jeremy and Jon make their picks. Is this double album a no-skip classic, or does it desperately need an editor?Join the Polyphonic Press Community: Love collecting classic vinyl or have a definitive pressing of Stand! you want to talk about? We love the Tubes around here so we're breaking one of our rules of not dipping into bands we've already covered on the show. There's a very good reason for this. Drummer Prairie Prince is a lot more than the Tubes' drummer. His long and storied career includes Todd Rundgren, Chris Isaak, Brian Eno, Jefferson Starship, Journey, David Foster and tons more. Prairie just released his first solo album, Colors and Passions, which is more of an ambitious art project than a collection of songs. Inspired by a 1966 album by jazz/spoken word artist Ken Nordine, the album is poetry and spoken word pieces about colors put to music as only an artist like Prairie can do. He joins us this week to discuss the creation of the album and to share stories from his long and diverse career. He's one of a kind. Come closer… the shadows grow restless. This week on the Scary Spirits podcast, Greg presses onward in his relentless crusade to review every Hammer Horror film, dragging the 1966 cult nightmare The Witches, starring the chillingly composed Joan Fontaine, out from beneath layers of dust and dread. Your hosts Karen and Greg peer deep into this unsettling piece of classic British horror, unraveling its curses, quiet menace, and creeping atmosphere—where evil whispers instead of screams. As the discussion darkens, so does the glass, with a specially prepared “Voodoo Doll” cocktail fueling the descent into the occult. Expect brooding analysis, shadow‑soaked commentary, and a slow burn of supernatural unease as folklore, fear, and film history entwine. This is Hammer Horror at its most insidious—subtle, sinister, and steeped in doom. Pour carefully, listen closely, and remember… some spirits are better left undisturbed. Just like the opening match on a wrestling show has the important role of setting the tone, the main event has the important role of ending the show on a strong note. Not every wrestler can be a main eventer, but the ones who prove they belong are the ones who stay in that spotlight. The same can be said for the closing track on an album. Not every song works as an album closer, but the ones that do stand the test of time. On this episode, Andrew and returning guest JoJo Remy (Voices of Wrestling) play a selection of their favorite album closers, mostly classics but a few modern ones as well. Artists played include Todd Rundgren, The Raconteurs, The Who, Superorganism, UFO, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Pink Floyd, Muse, David Bowie, and many more. The lights are bright and everybody is listening, because it's time for the main event!Theme song: "Hemispheres" by Silent PartnerBluesky: @MusicoftheMat / @justandrew / @jojorunsAll VOW podcasts, articles, previews, and reviews: VoicesofWrestling.comJoin the VOW Discord to discuss Music of the Mat and other shows/topics: VoicesofWrestling.com/DiscordDonate to Music of the Mat and other VOW podcasts: VoicesofWrestling.com/DonateOur Sponsors:* Sign up and get 10% off at BetterHelp: https://www.betterhelp.comAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

After the success of 1973's We're an American Band Grand Funk Railroad (or simply Grand Funk) maintained producer Todd Rundgren for their 1974 album Shinin' On. Although it gave them another number one song with their cover of "The Loco-Motion," it didn't measure up in quality to the predecessor. The signs of the upcoming burnout were there but they still managed to produce a decent album. TrulySignificant.com talks to the creators of the rock opera- A Man of Fortune. The team of Wooten, Murphy, and Clark debut the rock opera, “A Man of Fortune,” The opera is a passion project 50 years in the making - Originally conceived by Jeff Clark (formerly of Austin-based 70s rock band Too Smooth) in the 1970s and early 1980s, “A Man of Fortune” began as a deeply personal songwriting endeavor, telling the story of performer Max Million, who, at the height of his career, meets event coordinator Lisa. Their brief but meaningful encounter sparks a journey of self-discovery for Max after he collapses during the encore and is hospitalized. Clark tapped his friend Brian Wooten, (who has played with White Heart and currently plays with Trace Adkins), to produce and play guitar on the opera and Darin Murphy, (a staple in the Austin music scene with credits that include Skyrocket, Lennon (Musical on Broadway), HeartByrne, Pepperland Players work with Todd Rundgren and Christopher Cross) to sing and embody the role of Max Million on the opera.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/success-made-to-last-legends--4302039/support.

Happy Halloween!Don and Dude get into the spirit with a pair of albums by artists who turned makeup, mystery, and myth into musical identity. Some masks conceal, others reveal . Produced by Todd Rundgren, this debut revs with glitter, grime, and chaotic charm. David Johansen, Johnny Thunders, and company blend garage grit with lipstick-stained theater, creating the blueprint for punk attitude and glam-metal swagger alike. Songs like "Personality Crisis," "Trash," and "Jet Boy" turn confusion and defiance into style itself.Ghost – Meliora (2015) From Sweden's cathedrals of doom comes a band that made Satanic spectacle strangely sublime. Led by Tobias Forge under papal disguise, Ghost's breakthrough record polishes metal into something divine and disturbingly singable. Meliora fuses heavy riffs, orchestral touches, and choirlike harmonies to explore faith, absence, and false salvation. The Grammy-winning "Cirice" leads the sermon, while “He Is” and “Deus in Absentia” bring haunting grandeur to a godless world. Welcome to the kick off of Transmissions' new season with your host, Jason P. Woodbury, after a wonderful summer mini-series from Tyler Wilcox, All One Song: A Neil Young Podcast. We first encountered this week's guest, New Zealand songwriter, actor, and composer Bret McKenzie, as one half of the indie pop/comedy duo Flight of the Conchords in the mid-2000s. But did you know that before that, he was a member of one of New Zealand's most popular reggae party bands? "Just for context, reggae music in New Zealand is kind of rock music in America or maybe even country," McKenzie says. "Outside Jamaica, New Zealand has the highest sales of Bob Marley records in the world. And it's the music you hear playing in the background when you're out." Since then, he's gone onto composer for film and TV projects like The Simpsons, The Muppets, Spongebob Squarepants, and more, and in 2022, he released Songs Without Jokes via Sub Pop Records. Inspired by vintage Los Angeles pop, the record showcased McKenzie sans obvious jokes, but not without levity and good humor. His new album, Freak Out City came out on August 15. Bolstered by vintage electric piano and groovy and psychedelic touches, it finds McKenzie expanding his Nilsson-esque palette with touches of Steely Dan, JJ Cale, and Todd Rundgren. McKenzie joins us on Transmissions to discuss the rabbit holes of modern life, cutting the record with studio legends like Leland Sklar, the Conchords specific brand of comedy, and shares details about his proposed Emmet Otter reboot with Ed Helms. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.
