The Yardbird's Godfrey Townsend is Living a Rock 'n Roll Wet Dream Fourth time IS the charm. After way too many reschedulings, as with all things, this conversation with the Yardbirds' Godfrey Townsend happened exactly when it was intended. Lightning doesn't strike the same spot twice, and this was an electric circus of talk and music perfection. From jumping in at the opening with The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again, to Godfrey's masterpiece of Jeff Beck's, Cause We've Ended as Lovers, from Blow by Blow, which cracked my heart open and left me with goosebumps, in tears… to every single moment in between, this was heaven. I've fostered my share of conversations that have blown my mind; this is amongst the best of the best. For a girl whose moniker was RockGirl back in the day when Godfrey and I met decades ago, this conversation was truly a Rock 'N Roll wet dream. Godfrey not only shares stories with Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Alan Parsons, Mark Farner, Dave Mason, Joey Molland, Todd Rundgren, Howard Kaylan, The Cowsills, Chuck Negron, The Association, Mark Volman… he's played with them all! And his stories and intimate experiences with them left me breathless. And then there's meeting Clapton, his divine private audience with Pete Townshend, his adorable Jimmy Page encounter and impression, meeting Beck! Has any rockin' stone been left unturned? Dammit, I didn't even ask about Mick and Keith! Next time. And there will be a next time. For the two hours of this, I trust there are so many more unmined gems. If rock's your thing, if you lived through the 60s till now, or just dig the music, Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200… hit the play button and hunker down for a wild, fun, and wonderful ride. An inside view from an insider. Consider this the audiobook of Godfrey's sure-to-come bestselling rock memoir. Hachachacha! LOVED IT! In Shaping Sounds, visionary music producer Robert Margouleff shares his stories of pushing the boundaries of musical innovation, art, and technology while helping create some of the most significant and influential music of our time.Beginning on the set of his first film, Ciao! Manhattan, with Andy Warhol superstar Edie Sedgwick, Margouleff captures the tragic beauty of New York's East Village and Warhol's Factory as he discovers a powerful new way to score his movie: the Moog synthesizer. This discovery leads him to meet a studio engineer who would become his long-time partner, Malcolm Cecil, with whom he would collaborate to invent the world's largest analog synthesizer, 'TONTO' (The Original New Timbral Orchestra). Together, Margouleff and Cecil used TONTO to help unleash Stevie Wonder's genius on his era-defining classic albums Music Of My Mind, Talking Book, Innervisions, and Fulfillingness' First Finale. In legendary studios like Electric Lady and the Record Plant, Margouleff became a pioneering producer and engineer for artists like Billy Preston, Jeff Beck, DEVO, The Isley Brothers, and David Sanborn. A true sonic innovator, he was an early adopter of immersive audio and surround, developing new mixing techniques for home theaters that brought some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters to life.Shaping Sounds is so much more than a chronicle of music history. It's a story about creativity, collaboration, and artistic courage. Margouleff interweaves his personal experiences with the teachers, friends, mentors, and influences that shaped him, revealing how empathy and curiosity fueled his life's work. This memoir is a rich and entertaining narrative of a key period in music history that brings readers deep into the world of record and film production and will inspire new generations of music-makers and dreamers.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

S04.E09 - From Page to Stage: Mike Bernard Discusses His Book 'Concert Dates'

Seeing Them Live

Play Episode Listen Later May 24, 2026 33:31

In this episode, Charles sits down with Mike Bernard, a Boston-area author, screenwriter, and playwright who came to writing later in life and hasn't slowed down since. Mike has published eight novels, written a stage musical, and optioned multiple screenplays through prestigious competitions including the Academy Nicholl Fellowship, the Page International Screenwriting Awards, ScreenCraft, and the Nantucket Film Festival. The conversation weaves together music, memory, friendship, and the creative life — all anchored in the gritty, soulful sounds of the 1970s and early '80s. Mike's live music journey begins with a memorable — if reluctant — first show: escorting his grandmother to see Liberace at the Cape Cod Melody Tent. His real musical awakening came when he saw the J. Geils Band at the old Boston Garden as a teenager, an experience he still counts among his best. The blues-driven energy of "House Party" and "Musta Got Lost" made a lifelong impression, and he draws a sharp distinction between that era of J. Geils and the MTV-era band that followed. Other standout shows include Elvis Costello at the Cape Cod Coliseum — where the opening silhouettes under blue light during "Watching the Detectives" hit him like a gut punch — and an extraordinary 1990 benefit concert at Worcester's Clark University featuring Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit, Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and Jimmy Buffett all on the same bill. And for pure comedic gold, Mike recounts the moment a Little River Band guitar pick landed — and stuck — to his bare thigh at the Melody Tent, with zero competition from the crowd for the souvenir. Charles and Mike then discuss Mike's book Concert Dates; a fictional story told in interview form — inspired by Daisy Jones & The Six — that follows six friends who meet at a concert at age 15 and are reunited decades later through a video diary. The backdrop is the Cape Cod Coliseum, a converted hockey rink that hosted an extraordinary run of classic rock shows from 1972 to 1983, including Van Halen, The Clash, Talking Heads, Peter Frampton, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and J. Geils (twelve times). Mike also shares the remarkable story of connecting with photographer Rudy Childs — a previous Seeing Them Live guest — through a Facebook group dedicated to the Coliseum, only to discover that Rudy's candid parking lot photos included a picture of Mike and his own friends from a Clash show. Listeners who enjoy music, nostalgia, and deeply human storytelling will find Concert Dates — and Mike's wider catalog, including Crossing the Sagamore — well worth picking up on Amazon. BANDS: Aerosmith, Black Sabbath, Billy Joel, Bob Seger, Bon Iver, Bonnie Raitt, Don Henley, Eagles (Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Schmit), Elvis Costello, Engelbert Humperdinck, Frankie Avalon, Huey Lewis and the News, J. Geils Band, Jackson Browne, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Buffett, Liberace, Little River Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker Band, Neil Young, Ozzy Osbourne, Peter Frampton, R.E.M., Ray Charles, Seals and Crofts, Sly & the Family Stone, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Four Tops, Tom Petty, Van Halen. Fred Hostetler is an indie artist, American musician, singer/songwriter, and author who has worked with major artists including Johnny Winters, Graham Parker, the Knack, Billy Squier, Jeff Beck, and Grammy award winning producer Jack Douglas. Along with Karen Lawrence he founded the highly acclaimed southern California blues band Blue By Nature. His style, while grounded in blues and Americana traditions,  cannot be defined by a single genre. He won the LA Music Critic Award for Best Singer Songwriter 2019 ...and nominated for Best Video 2019 ‘You Don't Know What You Don't Know' ”  Fred Hostetler's new single ‘A Man in Black' is an interpolated song about a song. "It is about the writer of that song and about a mother pleading with her son: “Don't take your guns to town”. It also refers to Johnny Cash's memorable 1971 album ‘Man in Black' and the powerful statement it made," explains the longtime singer-songwriter with a loyal fanbase and a resume recording and playing with rock luminaries including legendary producer Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, John Lennon), who produced a record by Hostetler's previous band, LA stalwarts, Blue By Nature.  "This is where the American icon, Johnny Cash, the Man in Black returns. He dressed in black explaining “it was for those who didn't have a voice: the poor, the imprisoned, the soldiers sent into war, and the marginalized who lived outside the spotlight,” says Hostetler. "Cash had the audacity to deliver a powerful message about guns to nation obsessed by them. He came to be identified as a truth teller. Bearing these things in mind, a little-known indie artist tries with a little help from an American icon and his sing to cast a glimmer of liight into the dark gloom of the human condition, hopin every day people can return to their lives in peace."https://fredsheartradio.com/

Ep 53: The iconic guitarist and composer talks SatchVai Band, his earliest inspirations, and his plans for the future Hello, music lovers!  Welcome to Why Music Matters, a podcast where we examine the power and influence that music can wield in our lives.  I'm your host, musician and music journalist Jeff Miers. Today's guest is one of the most critically lauded and commercially successful rock guitarists of his generation. Since the 1987 release of his second album, the evergreen Surfing with the Alien, Joe Satriani has been nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and sold more than 10 million albums.  And he did all of this with a body of work that is almost exclusively instrumental. Taking a page from the book of the late Jeff Beck, Satriani blended a penchant for memorable melodies, intense and ambitious arrangements, and considerable virtuosity, in the process, becoming the best-selling instrumental rock guitarist of all time.  For his latest venture, Satriani has teamed with one of his oldest friends and collaborators - another legend, who also happens to be a former student of Satriani's - the great Steve Vai, to form The SatchVai Band. (For our listeners here in Buffalo, NY, you'll have the opportunity to catch this powerhouse in action at Kleinhans Music Hall on Tuesday, May 12.) During our chat, Joe - who also happens to be one of the nicest guys I've ever encountered in the music business - reflected on his earliest musical inspirations, the importance of jazz in the development of his musical imagination, why the SatchVai Band puts a perma-grin on his face, and his passion for the soon-to-be-released first studio album from that band.  Welcome to Why Music Matters, Joe Satriani… Produced by 678Main Studio and Creative Services https://678main.com --- Follow Why Music Matters on social media https://instagram.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://www.facebook.com/whymusicmatterspodcast https://twitter.com/wmmpod

Most notably, he retained Jan Hammer - famous to the boys for creating the Miami Vice theme - and a jazz/new age legend in his own right. Wilbur Bascomb provides the bass (he's a real allstar on this record though Hammer does fill in on a couple of songs), Narada Michael Walden writes some songs and lays down the beat with Max Middleton returning on the keys to provide the foundation for Jeff and Jan to do their thing. Hearing these two playing off of each other can be intense and I wouldn't call this a rock record but more of a jazz fusion experiment. Led Boots is a heavy starter and while Jeff is happy to let others shine, he standouts extraordinarily on Charles Mingus' Goodbye Pork Pie Hat. Jan Hammer write Blue Wind starts the second side with some funk (provided mostly by Hammer on various machines) and the bluesy, jazzy jams make this record a showcase for getting talent in a room and letting them do their thing. There are no vocals on this album which makes it so surprising that it went platinum in the US. Jeff Beck never chased big fame or success, he chased tone and talent to play alongside. He willingly shares the spotlight and adds his flourishes when asked to but despite the name on the cover, it's very much a jazzy collaboration between some real pros. And he didn't think he could top it - he didn't make another studio album until 1980. In this episode of the LEGENDS: Podcast by All Day Vinyl host Scott Dudelson sits down with legendary drummer Carmine Appice to trace a career that began in the late 1960s and shaped generations of rock drummers. Appice reflects on his work with Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, Beck Bogart & Appice, and long stints performing and co-writing with Rod Stewart, plus decades of session and touring work with artists from Pink Floyd to Ozzy Osbourne. The episode highlights Appice's new Cactus album, Temple of the Blues Part Two, a collaborative blues record featuring more than a dozen guest rock legends and reinterpretations of songs by Howlin' Wolf, Jimi Hendrix and classic Cactus material. Carmine explains his recording process—starting with drums, building demos, and choosing guest vocalists—and shares how the project grew from his love of a little-known blues-rock album. Listeners get insider stories about co-writing global hits like “Do You Think I'm Sexy?” and “Young Turks” with Rod Stewart, and memories of close friendships and encounters with Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Prince and others. Appice also discusses wild early days with Vanilla Fudge, odd management ties, and career highs and lows including with Jeff Beck and Blue Murder projects. The conversation touches on technology, from using AI in videos and song experiments to his stance on streaming platforms, and closes with plans for future Cactus All-Star shows and collaborations with contemporary players. This episode is full of behind-the-scenes anecdotes, songwriting insights, and reflections on a life in rock. Shockingly, Mick Taylor turned in his resignation to The Rolling Stones in late 1974 after the Tour of the Americas had already been booked. That changed the landscape for the band immediately so they shelved plans to make a new release in 1975 and gave us the compilation Made in the Shade. While they enlisted Ronnie Wood to fill in on the tour, they brought in multiple guitar heroes to take a crack at it. Harvey Mandel (Canned Heat, John Mayall) brought funk (Hot Stuff) , Wayne Perkins added some tough southern riffs (Hand of Fate), Ronnie chipped in some reggae & latin rhythms (Cherry Oh Baby, Ney Negrita) and Jeff Beck even showed up to jam for a couple of hours. The end result didn't fit one cohesive style - it was the Stones looking for inspiration from black cultures all over the world, putting their own spin on things. Keith Richards wasn't always reliable so Mick Jagger carried forward with music he loved from all over. And they brought back some of the usual suspects in Nicky Hopkins and Billy Preston. However, Mick and Keith would cross a line with Billy that ruined their relationship forever (and we'll get into that on the show). Some might see it as a mixed bag, lacking cohesion and suffering from weak lyrics. Some Stones fans see it as an adventurous album with beloved deep tracks. Fool To Cry was an international hit but isn't huge in their repertoire so Black and Blue is often overlooked in their catalog. As it turns 50 we are getting better acquainted with Black & Blue and include a little overview of the 40th anniversary edition (which was released just months from its 50th annivesary). In an industry long dominated by men, Rock Camp has quietly become a place where women thrive creatively, collaborate fearlessly, and take the stage alongside the legends they admire. The camps also offer 'Women's Only', and 'Songwriting' camps too.Beyond the campers, Rock Camp has been equally meaningful for the artists themselves. The late Jeff Beck called the camp “the best way to give back” after everything music had given him. Roger Daltrey says in the documentary Rock Camp that the experience reminds him of what it felt like when he was just starting out. Gene Simmons has said he wishes Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp existed when he was coming up so young artists could learn directly from the legends. The Rock Camp story has resonated deeply in popular culture, with appearances and coverage spanning The Simpsons, Billions, Saturday Night Live, The Today Show, and Pawn Stars. The documentary ROCK CAMP is currently available for free on Amazon, YouTube, and all major streaming platforms. The Rock Camp podcast continues to spotlight unforgettable stories from artists and campers alike. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Sir George Martin was the Beatles' extraordinary producer and the most acclaimed and celebrated music producer of the rock era. No one comes close to Sir George for the innovation and sheer perfection of his body of work. It's almost an accident that he worked with the Beatles. Before meeting them he was in charge of EMI's Parlophone label where he produced comedy and novelty acts like Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan. His introduction to the Beatles only came about after they were rejected by 17 other record labels. When he brought them in for an audition he was not very impressed, but he was intrigued by their energy and charisma. Sir George has said that in the beginning he was the master and they were the students, but in time this role reversed and they became the masters and he the student. This transformation was due to the genius of Lennon and McCartney and their constant pushing him to create more and different sounds and effects. It's beyond discussion that the Beatles would not have been the Beatles without George Martin. From convincing Paul to use a string quartet on “Yesterday”, to his slowed down then sped up piano solo on “In My Life”, to his creation of a circus swirl on “Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite”, to his seamless combination of two takes at different speeds and different keys on “Strawberry Fields” - he truly was the 5th Beatle. He went on to produce a host of other artists and hits including Jeff Beck, the Mahavishnu Orchestra, America and Gerry and the Pacemakers. In his career, he produced 30 number-one hit singles in the UK and 23 number-one hits in the United States, winning six Grammys. Think about how lucky we were that fate brought together the Beatles and Sir George Martin. Together they changed the world. —----------------------------------------------------------- The Follow Your Dream Podcast:Top 1% of all podcasts with Listeners in 200 countries! While it would be easy to categorize the work of OTIS as Southern Rock, being from Kentucky, their musical background is much broader. In addition to being guided by the classic rock giants of the 1960s and 70s era, the members of OTIS draw inspiration from true greats—people like Muddy Waters, Leadbelly, and the artists of Motown—to create their own unique rock and roll sound. With Boone Froggett on guitar and vocals, John Seeley on bass, Alex Wells on guitar, and Dale Myers on drums, the members of The Otis Band are staying connected to their Kentucky roots. Growing up around traditional instruments like piano, fiddle, and guitar instilled in them an appreciation for country-rock, bluegrass, gospel, and folk music. Kentucky's rich musical heritage led them to discover the Rock and Blues heroes that continue to influence the bands original material. After releasing Tough Times: A Tribute to John Brim,—Former Chess Records Blues Recording Artist— in 2014, OTIS joined Cleopatra Records in 2017, with the release of their second album Eyes of the Sun. A chance meeting with ZZ Top's Billy F. Gibbons led to the legend listening to Otis and becoming a fan—even handing their albums off to the likes of Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck! Four songs from Eyes of the Sun were also included in the soundtrack of the 2020 film Street Survivors.OTIS has a new track out called I'm Wicked part of a forthcoming album out sometime in 2026!For more on the band checkout their website! https://theotisband.com

Do you know someone eyeing their retirement accounts to fund their nonprofit dreams? We need to talk! In this episode, I'm joined by Jeff Beck, a wealth advisor at COE Financial Group, to tackle a listener question that had me equal parts fascinated and horrified. Real Listener Question: "My partner has a traditional IRA with about $100,000 in it. Can she invest that money in my 501(c)(3) without penalties? Do we need to set up a for-profit company for her IRA to invest in first? Are there IRS rules against her investing in something I founded and run?" Jeff and I dig into the mechanics of IRAs, self-directed accounts, and what the IRS actually allows when it comes to retirement funds and charitable giving. Spoiler alert: nonprofits DO NOT have shareholders so you can't "invest" in them and get a return! There are some serious red flags here, both on the legal side AND in this interpersonal relationship. What You'll Learn: Why you can't really "invest" in a nonprofit How giving to a nonprofit can benefit an individual's tax position What a self-directed IRA is and what you get to do with it One legitimate way to donate your IRA funds to a nonprofit tax-free Why getting "returns" on your contribution can put a nonprofit's tax-exemption at risk How you can financially hurt yourself when you're starting a new organization Bottom line: Using your (or your significant other's) retirement fund to set up your new business is probably NOT a good idea. Protect yourself, protect your partner, and please, let that IRA grow. What makes something truly *intelligent?* Is a rock an agent? Could a perfect simulation of your brain actually *be* you? In this fascinating conversation, Dr. Jeff Beck takes us on a journey through the philosophical and technical foundations of agency, intelligence, and the future of AI.Jeff doesn't hold back on the big questions. He argues that from a purely mathematical perspective, there's no structural difference between an agent and a rock – both execute policies that map inputs to outputs. The real distinction lies in *sophistication* – how complex are the internal computations? Does the system engage in planning and counterfactual reasoning, or is it just a lookup table that happens to give the right answers?*Key topics explored in this conversation:**The Black Box Problem of Agency* – How can we tell if something is truly planning versus just executing a pre-computed response? Jeff explains why this question is nearly impossible to answer from the outside, and why the best we can do is ask which model gives us the simplest explanation.*Energy-Based Models Explained* – A masterclass on how EBMs differ from standard neural networks. The key insight: traditional networks only optimize weights, while energy-based models optimize *both* weights and internal states – a subtle but profound distinction that connects to Bayesian inference.*Why Your Brain Might Have Evolved from Your Nose* – One of the most surprising moments in the conversation. Jeff proposes that the complex, non-smooth nature of olfactory space may have driven the evolution of our associative cortex and planning abilities.*The JEPA Revolution* – A deep dive into Yann LeCun's Joint Embedding Prediction Architecture and why learning in latent space (rather than predicting every pixel) might be the key to more robust AI representations.*AI Safety Without Skynet Fears* – Jeff takes a refreshingly grounded stance on AI risk. He's less worried about rogue superintelligences and more concerned about humans becoming "reward function selectors" – couch potatoes who just approve or reject AI outputs. His proposed solution? Use inverse reinforcement learning to derive AI goals from observed human behavior, then make *small* perturbations rather than naive commands like "end world hunger."Whether you're interested in the philosophy of mind, the technical details of modern machine learning, or just want to understand what makes intelligence *tick,* this conversation delivers insights you won't find anywhere else.---TIMESTAMPS:00:00:00 Geometric Deep Learning & Physical Symmetries00:00:56 Defining Agency: From Rocks to Planning00:05:25 The Black Box Problem & Counterfactuals00:08:45 Simulated Agency vs. Physical Reality00:12:55 Energy-Based Models & Test-Time Training00:17:30 Bayesian Inference & Free Energy00:20:07 JEPA, Latent Space, & Non-Contrastive Learning00:27:07 Evolution of Intelligence & Modular Brains00:34:00 Scientific Discovery & Automated Experimentation00:38:04 AI Safety, Enfeeblement & The Future of Work---REFERENCES:Concept:[00:00:58] Free Energy Principle (FEP)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_energy_principle[00:06:00] Monte Carlo Tree Searchhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Carlo_tree_searchBook:[00:09:00] The Intentional Stancehttps://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262540537/the-intentional-stance/Paper:[00:13:00] A Tutorial on Energy-Based Learning (LeCun 2006)http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-06.pdf[00:15:00] Auto-Encoding Variational Bayes (VAE)https://arxiv.org/abs/1312.6114[00:20:15] JEPA (Joint Embedding Prediction Architecture)https://openreview.net/forum?id=BZ5a1r-kVsf[00:22:30] The Wake-Sleep Algorithmhttps://www.cs.toronto.edu/~hinton/absps/ws.pdf---RESCRIPT:https://app.rescript.info/public/share/DJlSbJ_Qx080q315tWaqMWn3PixCQsOcM4Kf1IW9_EoPDF:https://app.rescript.info/api/public/sessions/0efec296b9b6e905/pdf
