Support the Podcast North American Waterfowler Apphttps://www.thenorthamericanwaterfowler.com Patreonhttps://www.patreon.com/freelanceduckhunting Episode Description In this episode, Elliott sits down with Chris Jobman for a wide ranging late season conversation that hits everything from weather driven duck movement to why some regions see more bands than others. They talk about the hunt giveaway crew, band stories, and the wild odds of killing two mallard pintail hybrids in the same spot just days apart. They also dig into habitat and food. Millet versus corn. Imprinting birds on a new marsh. Why ducks shortstop when conditions stay warm. Then they tackle the flooded corn debate head on, including the claim that it stops migration and the argument that it is baiting. Chris gives his take and Elliott adds perspective from Kansas and the Central Flyway. To wrap it up, Chris answers a listener question about force fetching a soft dog and why training the owner is often harder than training the dog. The band continued to tour Europe the following year, supporting bands like Bon Jovi , Meatloaf and the Coors and in 1998 began work on their second album "Karmarama" for which Duncan wrote many songs including "Sunburst" which went on to become the band's biggest record. Car Con Carne
Comics aftermarket - flipping, speculating, and celebrating w/ Jon Belonio and Dave Zortea (Episode 1102)

    Car Con Carne

I’ve been reading comics since I was a small child. I’m pretty sure, without exaggeration, that I learned how to read largely because of comics. Like anyone in the hobby, I’d fallen in and out of it through the years. These days, I’m fully back in it, though I’m not terribly concerned with new titles. I’m more interested in back issues, mainly from the formative years of my youth- the so-called “Bronze Age “ between 1970-1985. I’ve been building up my collection with lots of “reader copies” - books that are good for the home library but won’t exactly be paying for any college tuition bills. As I’ve been jumping back in, it’s clear that since I started collecting many years ago, the hobby of collecting has changed a lot, to no one’s surprise. “Slabbed,” or professionally graded and encased comics are very much a factor in modern collecting, making even amateur collectors think of comics less as pieces of a narrative and more as numbers on a 10 scale. I used to - still do - chase missing books and key issues. The chase for books that are only graded above certain numbers is relatively new and kinda gross to me, though I realize that may make me sound like an old man. It’s an interesting time for the aftermarket, and that’s the focus of this episode. Don’t be scared: this one’s not a nerdy deep dive into comic book lore. Instead, it’s about the art and science of collecting, speculation, and the buying and selling of used comics. You don’t need to read comics to listen or watch this episode. Two of my Facebook friends seem to have figured a lot of this puzzle out, and I’ve wanted to pick their brains for a while. Joining me are two guys who never met before recording. First, it’s Jon Belonio. Find him at cstyledog on Instagram, cstyledog_comics on ebay And here’s Dave Zortea. He’s at Zortea.us, Tiki Comics on Facebook Marketplace, and Tikicomicsandmore on ebay. For this episode,we met outside the Half Price Books in Schaumburg - I’m not convinced there are deals to find at Half Price Books, but it made geographic sense to meet there. Discussed on this episode: -Is there money to be made in flipping comics? -Where do you source comics? -What platforms are best for selling?-Should we all pool resources and do a video claim sale together? -Raw vs. slabbed. -The simple joy of having a good “reader copy” ## Car Con Carne is also sponsored by Exploding House Printing. Jupiter looks like it’s wearing zebra stripes. Bands of clouds that run parallel to the equator alternate between bright and dark – zebra stripes. Each one is thousands of miles wide. The stripes are a result of Jupiter’s composition and its rotation. It’s basically a ball of gas – it’s made almost entirely of hydrogen and helium. And even though it’s 11 times the diameter of Earth, it spins on its axis in less than 10 hours. That forces the clouds that top its atmosphere into bands that stretch from east to west. The bands alternate between belts and zones. The belts are darker – probably because they allow us to see deeper into the atmosphere. The zones are topped by the highest clouds. The clouds are made of frozen ammonia, which looks bright white. The belts don’t have that layer. Instead, we’re seeing clouds in the next layer down. Those clouds are made of water and other compounds, which are darker. The stripes are flanked by jet streams that blow in alternating directions. They can roar at hundreds of miles per hour. They keep the belts and zones separated – maintaining the zebra stripes on this giant planet. Jupiter is at its best this week. It’s in view all night, and it shines brightest for the year. It looks like a brilliant star. It’s low in the eastern sky in early evening, and climbs high across the sky later on. The stripes are easily visible through just about any telescope. The pioneers of True Norwegian Black Metal return. Attila Csihar joins The Loaded Radio Podcast to discuss mayhem's seventh studio album, Liturgy Of Death, arriving February 6, 2026. In this visceral interview, Attila reflects on the band's 40-year legacy of church burnings, murder, and the bleak reality of mortality.  There is "heavy," and then there is Mayhem. Sitting across from Attila Csihar for this episode of The Loaded Radio Podcast, the air in the room felt different. You aren't just talking to a vocalist; you are talking to a man who stepped into the center of a literal crime scene and helped forge it into a global movement. Liturgy Of Death (2026) is a merciless record that turns the focus toward the finality of existence. It is dark, fast, and entirely without solace. But to understand where they are going, you have to look at the wreckage they left behind. From the suicide of Dead to the internal war that led to the death of Euronymous, this isn't just music—it's a survival story from the darkest corners of the human psyche. Stick around after the interview for a segment that has been generating a lot of buzz. Host Scott Penfold delivers an incredibly entertaining and in-depth breakdown of the "Bands to Watch in 2026." If you're tired of the same three bands headlining every "new music" playlist, Scott's look at the up-and-coming hard rock and metal acts is the definitive roadmap you need. The band tried to force a new sound—clean vocals mixed with screams—and it just wasn't working. The fix? Stop trying to be a different band and lean into what already fits.Matt ties that directly into shop life: not every shop needs to work on every vehicle type or take every job, and not every person needs to be great at every kind of work. Whether it's building around strong mechanical specialists, strong technical specialists, or choosing a narrower service lane, specializing on purpose can be the difference between surviving and thriving. What you'll hear in this episodeWhy the “do everything” mindset can quietly punish shops (and people)A real example of pivoting back to core strengths (and winning bigger because of it)The difference between mechanical specialists and technical specialists—and why both are hard to findWhy “I can buy the tools” doesn't automatically equal “we can do the work well”Checking ego at the door: success doesn't require being everything to everyoneA nod to “reverse benchmarking”: build your identity around what others don't do wellKey takeaways (shop + career)Specialization isn't weakness. It can be the most rational way to deliver consistent quality.Tools and information don't replace capability. They support it—if the people and processes are there.Staffing reality matters. If you don't have the right mechanical specialist or technical specialist, forcing the work in-house can be painful. You can evolve later. The Café Central, a jazz club located just off Madrid's Puerta del Sol — Spain's "Kilometer Zero" — has been going out of business for more than forty years. And now, it finally might. Opened in the early 1980s during Spain's cultural reopening after Franco's dictatorship, Café Central became a rare kind of space: part jazz club, part café, part public living room. Bands were booked for full weeks — seven nights at a time — a model that favored musical development over turnover, and community over efficiency. It was never a good business. But it was a great room. For nearly thirty years, my father, jazz musician Ben Sidran, and I returned every November to play there. Over time, the ritual turned into a tradition, and the tradition turned into a legacy — not just for us, but for audiences who marked their calendars around those weeks. Café Central also reflected the city around it. For years, Madrid felt quietly provincial — less touristy, more inward-facing than other European capitals. But that changed. Tourism surged. Rents rose. The economics shifted. In 2018, new owners took over the club. The booking model changed. Week-long residencies largely disappeared, replaced by shorter runs and double seatings. The future arrived, whether anyone wanted it or not. And yet, something endured. Café Central wasn't just a place where music happened. It was where relationships formed — between musicians and audiences, between locals and visitors, between generations. It taught us that culture survives not because it's profitable, but because people show up, night after night, year after year. As Café Central prepares to close — or possibly move — it raises a familiar question: when a place disappears, what actually goes with it? The answer, I think, is never just the room. It's the memory of how it felt to be there — and the responsibility to carry that feeling forward. I am Celtic musician and podcaster. We are promoting Celtic culture through Christmas cheer. We want to bring a little magic and joy into your holiday season. If you love this music, if it makes your heart lift, please remember that it exists because real people make it. Bands. Songwriters. Musicians who pour years of their lives into learning their craft, writing songs, rehearsing, touring, recording, and sharing something meaningful with the world. Most of the Celtic musicians you hear on this podcast aren't getting rich. Not even close. Streaming pays pennies. Radio exposure doesn't pay the rent. For many artists, the only reason they can keep making and releasing music is because listeners like you choose to support them directly. That support matters more than you might realize. Buy an album. Grab a pin or a shirt. Back a Kickstarter. Become a patron. Show up to a show. Even shar ea song with a friend. Those small acts of generosity add up. They are often the difference between an artist making another album… or quietly fading away. So if there's a band you love on this podcast, support them. If there's a song that moved you, support the people who made it. Supporting small and indie music isn't charity, it's how this music survives, grows, and keeps finding its way into our lives. Thank you for being part of that. Now… let's get back to the music. 28:56 - Marc Gunn "Let's Have a Celtic Christmas" from Celtic Christmas Greetings 31:04 - Rathkeltair "In The Bleak Mid Winter" from Something Good for Christmas 34:07 - Reilly "Bells Over Boston" from Kick Ass Celtic Christmas 38:22 - Celtic Women, Sean Griffin "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" from Nollaig – A Christmas Journey 40:46 - THANK YOU FOR SPREADING CHRISTMAS CHEER! "Here's the story of a lovely couple Who are in a cool band they call doubleVee Allan & Barb Vest went on a podcast To discuss bands that are family. Here's the story of a groovy podcast, Hosted by two guys named Uncle Gregg and Brett They were diving deep through all the records Mostly classic alternative Til the one day when the Lads met the Vests And they knew it was much more than a fad That this group must somehow form a top five list That's the way we do it on Only Three Lads Only Three Lads Only Three Lads That's the way we do it on Only Three Lads!" That's right - the focus of this week's episode is on bands containing siblings, married couples, cousins, etc.  Coincidentally - actually, it's totally NOT a coincidence - our Third Lads today are the Oklahoma-based married couple, Allan & Barb Vest, who make up the band doubleVee.  Allan was previously primary songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for one of the best left-of-center indie pop bands of the early 2000s, Starlight Mints, who released four albums during the first decade of the new millennium.   Barb's history notably includes writing, hosting and producing the nationally syndicated film soundtrack radio programFilmscapes, as well as editing a music webzine and performing with various bands.  Together as doubleVee, Allan & Barb have crafted some astounding and wildly inventive music - the highly recommended debut concept album The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider in 2017, the 2019 EP, the 2022 record Treat Her Strangely (containing "Your Love Is It Real?" as heard on the hit Netflix series Wednesday), and now the newly released EP Periscope At Midnight.  The music of doubleVee is a wonderful and beguiling thing - comfortingly poppy but with plenty of strange twists, turns and detours along the way.  Cinematic music with a keen and often whimsical eye for storytelling, doubleVee's songs are beautiful and orchestral, but leaves you with the unsettling feeling that something grotesque may be bubbling underneath the surface.  Thanks to Howard Wuelfing for the introduction and coordination! From Shakespeare's 'band of brothers' speech to its appearances in numerous films, Agincourt rightfully has a place among a handful of conflicts whose names are immediately recognized around the world. The Battle of Agincourt, fought in 1415, is famous for the decisive role of the English and Welsh longbowmen, who—despite being significantly outnumbered and exhausted—decimated the heavily armored French nobility with volleys of arrows. This unlikely victory was profoundly important because it not only paved the way for King Henry V to be named heir to the French throne via the Treaty of Troyes, but it also demonstrated the waning dominance of the medieval knight in warfare.Today’s guest is Michael Livingston, author of “Agincourt: Battle of the Scarred King.” We go back to the original sources, including the French battle plan that still survives today, to give a new interpretation, one that challenges the traditional site of the battlefield itself. The English victory at Agincourt on October 25, 1415, was a result of strategic brilliance, terrain advantage, and the devastating effectiveness of the longbow, combined with French tactical errors. Henry V’s smaller army, roughly 6,000-9,000 men (mostly longbowmen), faced a French force of 12,000-36,000, including heavily armored knights.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
