We wrap up Family Movie Month with what can best be described as “Carrie” for kids. (With a surprising scoop of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and an important connection to “Scream 2”!) Despite its spooky undertones (and Roald Dahl roots), “Matilda” is also an enthralling coming of age story featuring small legend Mara Wilson, Embeth Davidtz's Icon to the Introverted, Miss Honey, TV royalty Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Best Supporting Jean Speegel Howard and Pam Ferris tearing the scenery from limb to limb as Trunchbull. Brie hogs the mic, and Jules reminisces about making the move from reading-for-decoding to reading for enjoyment. Speaking of enjoyment: Enjoy!

“It's you…it's your special medicine that's helping the people. It's not so much about the tools that you learn or the knowledge that you gain.” Today I have Dr. Leah Taylor with me, who is a dear client of mine, and an amazing professional. She explains part of her journey like this: “From a very young age, I noticed a disconnect between my mind and body. I felt proud of my head, but when I looked down at the rest of my body, I didn't recognize it as my own. My journey home to myself started with live music. Blown apart by the percussive beats of Rusted Root, it was my first spiritual experience and the first time I fully felt alive and integrated in my whole body. I was so intrigued, I pursued a Master's in Somatic Psychology and a Ph.D. in Mind-Body Medicine to learn about how our bodies work in an integrative way and what an experience like live music means for our healing and wellness. Even though I pursued the professional path of a therapist, I always knew my work and my own healing was bigger than what could fit in a small session room. I knew it was the things I did every day, not once a week for 50 mins, that would make the biggest impact on my life.” This is when she decided to come into my world and realized she needed to clear old programming in order to move forward and properly value her work and abilities. Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, has guitar chops that can soothe or rage, with a charismatic swagger as frontman and singer. Based in the sprawling Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, The Sleeping Cliffs is a solo studio project from multi-instrumentalist Todd Glidewell. Combining elements of indietronica, post-rock, alternative, funk, jazz-fusion and ambient electronica, The Sleeping Cliffs produce emotive, cinematic, instrumental songs. Though not boxed in by any one genre, the songs share an undertow of gritty bass lines, layers of guitar, and big rock drums.
Blending influences from around the globe, Pittsburgh's own Rusted Root made their mark on music history with their unforgettable 1992 hit, “Send Me On My Way”. This joyous tune only hit #72 on the Billboard Hot 100, but the song's prominence in movies, TV, and commercials has eclipsed its initial chart performance. This week, we'll dive further into the story and back catalog of Rusted Root to decide if we'd like to hold their little hand or tell them to run. Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with THE ACCIDENTALS!!!!Long before glowing acclaim from NPR and Billboard, packed shows, unforgettable festival appearances, millions of streams, and collaborations with everyone from BTS to Kaboom Collective Orchestra, the journey of The Accidentals commenced in a public high school classroom in Traverse City, MI. As the story goes, concertmaster violinist, Savannah Buist, and cellist, Katie Larson, raised their hands at the request for volunteers to play a music boosters concert and wound up being musical soulmates. As high school ended, Sav and Katie added Michael Dause to the band on drums and began nonstop touring, playing 200+ shows a year at such festivals as Electric Forest, Rocky Mountain Folk Fest, Summerfest, and SXSW, and on stages with the likes of Brandi Carlile, The Wailers, Joan Baez, Arlo Guthrie, Andrew Bird, Martin Sexton, Rusted Root, The Decemberists, and more. Following the 2016 release of Parking Lot EP, Huffington Post touted The Accidentals among its “Sweet 16 of 2016.” Billboard called them “the band to watch.” On its heels, they signed a deal with Sony Masterworks label and 2017's Odyssey rapidly accelerated the momentum.Garnering praise from Yahoo! Music, Pop Matters, Billboard and more, NPR claimed, “[The Accidentals] are some of the most compelling songwriters of our time...they display equal interest in the focused musical forms of indie rock and pop and the expansive potential of orchestral arrangements, jam band open-endedness and impressionistic singer-songwriter expression.”The Accidentals' WebsiteInstagramTwitterFacebookYouTubeSUPPORT THIS SHOW

WISCONSIN MUSIC PODCAST Episode 52 DONOMA Donoma is an eclectic Rock 'n' Roll band out of Kenosha, Wi., refusing to fall under one genre When modern rock band Donoma decided to head back in to the studio to record their third full length album, they decided it wasn't enough to match the success of 2017's “Falling Forward”. That would be fine for many bands as that record gained them airplay on more than 120 terrestrial radio stations and helped them secure direct concert support for the likes of Soul Asylum, Meat Puppets, Candlebox, Tantric, and Rusted Root along with many top billing shows. For this album the band put three simple rules in place. First, to lyrically examine the world around them and to not shy away from stating where they stood. Second, to keep production to a minimum. And finally, to make a cohesive album that re-imagined rock and roll's glory days. On “American Rust”, Donoma burst through expectations. With eight songs blazing through at thirty-four minutes, listeners are taken on a journey through today's America with all of its hopes and dreams and flaws. The album opens with “Rustbelt Tragedy”, a no holds barred tribute to the American worker and ends with “Road Song”, which tells the story of one man's realization that he must fight for what he believes in. Between those staggering bookends, Donoma tackles millennial angst with the punky “Nobody Wants Us”, race relations on “Hands Are Up”, the young dreamer coming to America on the lilting “Maria”, the tour-deforce rallying cry of “Common Man”, climate change on “Home”, and finally an assault on gun violence and the N.R.A. in the chilling “Ballad of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.” Paddy Fineran of Music Matters says that “American Rust” is “delivered with a steely focus on melody, moxie, and mettle with a fair amount of magic thrown in”, and “This is what music lovers have been waiting twenty years for, the return of great rock n' roll.” The Wisconsin Gazette called Donoma, “a group known for its diverse music, eccentric attitude, and outspoken activism.” The Wisconsin State Journal pitched Donoma as, “one of the most eclectic bands in the state.” Wisconsin's top music paper, Shepherd Express added, “The band has an attacking sound, the raw energy of artists in rebellion … Donoma merges influences ranging from punk to Pearl Jam in to a Frankenstew of menace and compassion.” Web www.donomatribe.com Twitter twitter.com/donomatribe/ Instagram instagram.com/donomatribe Facebook facebook.com/donomatribe Music Links: Spotify https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://open.spotify.com/artist/6cXKWDi6xa3TJ0kB3Fdzjw?si=FgsSx8UXSpmQwGwDvvVH4g__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!1CXXR-FmypBPwdWQWQ1u2vJUVeee9QqU-V0klKY8aT8iW1JDOk-chf05NvRqPp3sIqo$ Apple https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://music.apple.com/us/artist/donoma/428096148__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!wAdS-2J1q9nSVNTcfHz8QLpaLQoSGHrxTH6pC-KzgjmhYL5x3ICyHo5Mlmxn9bLKcHQ$ Tidal Donoma YouTube https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://youtube.com/user/donomatribe__;!!Lf_9VycLqA!2y9OdfXDOqN8Br9Ol5fgKCLme1nu0SRWvh0DAfWJJhwriXesp61zdrJIf4B6-amv5E4$ .www.donomatribe.com

Hey Gang! Brent Porche here.. I had the pleasure of speaking with Chris Barron, lead singer, of The Spin Doctors ahead of his show at City Winery Philadelphia on 8/24. We talk about the 30th anniversary of their multi-platinum debut "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" (released August 20th 1991), the filming of the music video for their smash hit Two Princes.. and the whereabouts of that infamous knit hat! We chat about the early days of the Spin Doctors/Trucking Company and rooming with John Popper & Blues Traveler in NYC. We also touch on the Spin Doctors opening for the Rolling Stones on the Voodoo Lounge tour & Sir Keef's "guitar guy". Also, what it was like having their debut album released the week before Pearl Jams's debut, Ten, while on the same record label. And one of my favorites from the chat, among many, was Chris' story about the first time he met Pierre Robert! Chris Barron will be performing live at the City Winery in Philadelphia on Tuesday August 24th 2021 - with special guests Michael Glabicki from Rusted Root w/ Dirk Miller. The moniker "jam bands" had been around for decades before their 90s counterparts in Phish, Rusted Root, and String Cheese Incident brought their own takes out on the road. Athens, Georgia based Widespread Panic draw on the southern sounds of The Allman Brothers Band as well as other guitar heroes like Eric Clapton and J. J. Cale to craft their guitar and keyboard driven sounds. The trick with jam bands, regardless of decade, has always been converting the energy and improvisation of the live performance into a crafted studio product. On 1997's Bombs and Butterflies, Widespread Panic smartly avoids overly long passages for trimmed down and concise songwriting. Drawn together by a love of music and a chance at redemption through our music. Everything we have gone through and overcome has brought us to these moments, this band and this sound. We offer you a taste of hard rock, alternative and metal overtones headlined by our fearless leader Kegan Sessions. We create songs that breathe life into the hearts of all who listen. Forever searching for the next ear to absorb and believe in the messages we project. Accompanied by a decade old pairing (from previous projects apart from Kegan) of Mikel Palm on bass guitar and Adam James on drums, this trio seeks to take over the world of rock music....

Alicia Lynn is celebrating her ninth year as a professional artist out of Pittsburgh. Taking the stage name of Sundae Service in 2019, this entertainer, promoter, producer, instructor has been dancing into blessed friendships across the nation from glittering side show sword swallowers to internationally ranked drag and burlesque kings and queens! Touring music festivals, comic conventions, and every type of Hollyburgh film set, a constant observable trend grew into focus for Alicia Lynn. Fellow artists and activists like jazz chanteuse Phat Man Dee and the prolific Liz Berlin of Rusted Root and Mr. Smalls Theater saw it, too. When Man Dee and Berlin assembled Social Justice Disco in 2016, a culturally diverse activist music project reviving the energy of disco with the power of protest songs, Alicia Lynn would get her opportunities to address her concerns. Her role as a dancer grew to include a seat at the table co-hosting workshops in the spiritual and artistic communities to combat cultural appropriation. Knowing the idea can seem intimidating, we can still respectfully come together to take accountability and learn safely together. These crucial conversations are a vital component to the empowerment and uplift of long suffering, exploited, overlooked communities still oppressed by systemic racism. The goal is always to embrace truth and move with grace to give justice where it's due and promote healing for a future we can all share fully and equally.
