Label: SGC 001Year: 1968Condition: MPrice: $60.00This is the first release of this much-released single, on the light tan label with no horizontal lines. The single was released again in 1970 on a light green (with some yellow) label. Though the A side is the band's most famous song and was a hit again for Nazz's guitarist and songwriter, Todd Rundgren, in 1973 -- in fact, it was Rundgren's biggest hit and only top 10 single -- my personal fave is the terrific, snarly B side. Rundgren had clearly been listening to the Who, but that's OK: It's a great song and a great sound! That Nazz and SGC thought so, too, is evidenced by the fact that "Open My Eyes" was actually the original A side of the single. As the chart information shows, "Eyes" charted nearly 6 months before "Hello" started up the chart. All in all, this is a nearly Mint copy of a classic single, the first from a Pennsylvania band led by one of the most important figures in American rock'n'roll during the 1970's. Even though he wasn't a consistent hitmaker himself, Todd Rundgren brought a large number of important artists to the studio and became a studio engineer/producer of even higher esteem than as a solo singer/musician. Note: This copy looks new with a drillhole. The sleeve is Near Mint and also has a drillhole. (This scan is a representative image from our archives.)
A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the song Love My Way (and The Psychedelic Furs) in (just under) fifteen minutes. The Psychedelic Furs formed in London in 1977. Led by vocalist Richard Butler and his brother Tim on bass, they are one of the many acts spawned from the British post-punk scene. The band had several hits in their early career. Pretty in Pink was originally released in 1981 as a single from their second album, Talk Talk Talk. John Hughes' 1986 film was named after the song and a re-recorded version of the song was included on its soundtrack.Love My Way was released in 1982 as the first single from their third album Forever Now. Written by the group and produced by Todd Rundgren, who also played marimba, the song featured backing vocals from Flo & Eddie (Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan of The Turtles). Although it scraped into the top 50 in the UK Singles Chart, Love My Way was featured in the 1983 film Valley Girl.It also appears on the soundtracks of the 1998 film The Wedding Singer and the 2006 film Starter for 10. After it was heard in the 2017 film Call Me by Your Name, the song enjoyed a surge in streaming popularity. It was also featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and please do leave feedback if you like what you you have heard.Mathew Woodall
fWotD Episode 2721: New York Dolls (album) Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Wednesday, 16 October 2024 is New York Dolls (album).New York Dolls is the debut studio album by the American rock band New York Dolls, released on July 27, 1973, by Mercury Records. In the years leading up to the album, the Dolls had developed a local fanbase by playing regularly in lower Manhattan after forming in 1971. However, most music producers and record companies were reluctant to work with them because of their vulgarity and onstage fashion as well as homophobia in New York; the group later appeared in exaggerated drag on the album cover for shock value. After signing a contract with Mercury, the Dolls recorded their first album at The Record Plant in New York City with producer Todd Rundgren, who was known for his sophisticated pop tastes and held a lukewarm opinion of the band. Despite stories of conflicts during the recording sessions, lead singer David Johansen and guitarist Sylvain Sylvain later said Rundgren successfully captured how the band sounded live. The resulting music on the album – a mix of carefree rock and roll, influences from Brill Building pop, and campy sensibilities – explores themes of urban youth, teen alienation, adolescent romance, and authenticity, as rendered in Johansen's colloquial and ambiguous lyrics.New York Dolls was met with widespread critical acclaim but sold poorly and polarized listeners. The band proved difficult to market outside their native New York and developed a reputation for rock-star excesses while touring the United States in support of the album. Despite its commercial failure, New York Dolls was an influential precursor to the 1970s punk rock movement as the group's crude musicianship and youthful attitude on the album challenged the prevailing trend of musical sophistication in popular music, particularly progressive rock. Among the most acclaimed albums in history, it has since been named in various publications as one of the best debut records in rock music and one of the greatest albums of all time. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:57 UTC on Wednesday, 16 October 2024.For the full current version of the article, see New York Dolls (album) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Matthew.
What if humanity's quest to control nature has led us to a precipice of both technological triumph and ecological disaster? Join us on a journey from the ancient practices of foraging and controlled burning to the modern complexities of mechanized agriculture. We uncover how early agricultural methods created both stability and fragility, and how our evolving belief in dominating nature has woven itself into the fabric of modern society and historical texts. As we navigate the tangled web of market forces and agricultural practices, we question the effectiveness of capitalist logic in solving environmental crises. We'll explore the historical context of sustainable farming, the disruptive influence of fossil fuels, and the commodification of agriculture. Reflecting on insights from the Substack article "Capital and Growth," we challenge the idea that markets are self-correcting and consider moving more elements out of this system to better address ecological and social issues. Finally, we reframe the narrative around global food production and hunger, highlighting the real culprits behind food shortages. By examining the inefficiencies in resource allocation and the unsustainable nature of continuous population growth, we emphasize the need to respect natural limits and foster biodiversity. We share thought-provoking perspectives on sustainable agriculture, cultural significance of food, and the inherent boundaries that shape our existence. Tune in to rethink our relationship with nature and agriculture, and discover a path to true sustainability.Gunnar Rundgren is a critical thinker with vast experiences from more than 100 countries in the world. He has worked with most parts of the organic agriculture sector since 1977, starting on the pioneer organic farm, Torfolk. He has been engaged as a consultant by NGOs, the government, private companies and intergovernmental organisations such as OECD, UNEP, UNCTAD, the World Bank and the FAO. Gunnar is the initiator of several organisations for organic agriculture in Sweden, including its main eco-label KRAV (www.krav.se) where he was the director for the first eight years. He served as the first President of the Accreditation Programme Board of the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) 1992-1997. He Rundgren was an IFOAM World Board member in 1998 and the IFOAM President during the period 2000-2005. In 2002 he was a founding board member of the ISEAL Alliance. He has published several books related to organic farming. In 2010, he published a book about the major social and environmental challenges of our world, Tradgarden Jorden, which was translated into Japanese in 2012 and is now published in English. He also co-authored the book Jorden vi Ater, published in 2012, about the challenge of feeding the world's population in a sustainable way. Rundgren was awarded an honorary doctorate in Science at the Uganda Martyrs University 2009. The same year, he was appointed a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.Follow Gunnar on his Substack HERE.

Grupperne: Beatles, Sailor, The Score, 1975, Saga, The Drums, Suede og Chase Atlantic.

Lahtelaisen Speedo Masters Finlandin uimari Tommy Rundgren voitti Euroopan mestaruuden masters-uinneissa 50 metrin vapaauinnissa viime viikolla. Rundgren ui ensi vuonna 55-59-vuotiaiden sarjassa. Seuraavat masters-uintikisat olisivat MM-kisat Japanissa vajaan vuoden päästä elokuussa uinnin yleisen sarjan MM-kisojen jälkeen. Sitten olisivat vuorossa MM-kisat Qatarissa. Lahti on ainoa suuri kaupunki, josta puuttuu kunnon uimahalli 50 metrin altaan kera. Kilpailujen järjestämisen lisäksi tässä on mielestäni on kyse kansanterveydestä. Uinti on ainoita laji, joka sopii nivelvaivaisillekin. Kaipasin päättäjiltä nyt rohkeutta ja päätöksiä rakentaa uusi halli, vaikka omalla rahalla Ranta-Kartanoon, Rundgren lopettaa. Kuuntele haastattelu, jossa Rundgren kertoo, miten kilpaurheilijan treenaaminen on muuttunut iän myötä!
Formed in London in 1969, Uriah Heep released their fourth and (to this point) most successful album, Demons and Wizards in May 1972. This album would also see the debut of what is considered the classic lineup of Uriah Heep as bassist Gary Thain and drummer Lee Kerslake joined vocalist David Byron, guitarist Mick Box, and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter Ken Hensley to form the group for this album. While the album cover and title suggest medieval fantasy, Hensley has stated that it was just a collection of songs, not a concept album. It is hard to deny the prog rock feel, however.Uriah Heep is considered a forerunner of hard rock, heay metal, and progressive rock. They have developed quite the cult following over the years, having released 24 studio albums, 20 live albums, and 41 compilation albums.Roger Dean created the cover art, as he did for a number of prog rock groups including Yes and Asia. The name Uriah Heep comes from a character from Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield"Brian is featuring this album. Friend of the show Bill Cook joins us in Bruce's place for this episode. The Wizard Former bassist Mark Clarke and Ken Hensley wrote this song, the opening track to the album and the first single released from the album. The lyrics are about a wanderer who meets "the Wizard for a thousand kings." It would be the first Uriah Heep song to be made into a video.Easy Livin'The second single off the album would be the only one to chart in the United States, making it to number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Surprisingly it did not chart in the UK. This is a common cover for party bands, though it was intended to be taken ironically.Circle of HandsThis is a deeper cut from the album, starting strong with the Hammond Organ. With lyrics like "Circle of hands, cold spirits' plan, searching the land for an enemy," it is hard to not see a thread of fantasy running through the track.Rainbow DemonThis track leads off side 2 of the album. "There rides the rainbow demon on his horse of crimson fire. Black shadows are following closely on the heels of his desire." This slow anthem continues with the strong organ work and combines it with a fuzzy guitar sound. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sitting Pretty (from the motion picture "Cabaret") Liza Minnelli and Michael York starred in this movie based on the Broadway show. STAFF PICKS:I Saw the Light by Todd RundgrenRob's staff pick was the lead-off track from Rundgren's third album, "Something/Anything?" and was placed there via inspiration from Motown's history of putting the hit songs first. Multi-instrumentalist Rundgren wrote the track in 20 minutes and credits the use of stimulants like Ritalin for his prolific songwriting at the time. Run Run Run by JoJo GunneBill Cook brings us a shuffle beat number by Los Angeles based JoJo Gunne, a band formed by Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes after they left the band Spirit. "We're all just papers in the wind." Sweet Hitch-Hiker by Creedence Clearwater Revival Wayne presents an underplayed swamp rock song from CCR. This is off their last album with John Fogerty. A restaurant called the Greasy King is referenced in the song, and that restaurant is in El Cerrito, the home town of the band members.Baby Blue by BadfingerBrian finishes off the staff picks with a song from an album produced by Todd Rundgren. Badfinger was the first group signed to The Beatles' Apple Records. This is the last top 40 hit in the US for the group. COMEDY TRACK:Troglodyte (Cave Man) by The Jimmy Castor BunchThis is a funk novelty song hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is the introduction of a character called Bertha Butt, who would recur in other songs from the Jimmy Castor Bunch.

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Todd Rundgren is in a class all his own. Whether scoring Top 40 hits, playing all of the instruments on his albums or wildly experimenting with musical genres, Rundgren is continuously pushing the boundaries of creativity. That ethos and ingenuity can be found in his numerous solo albums from the 70s to present day, with his band Utopia and as a record producer for musicians like Patti Smith, The Psychedelic Furs and MeatLoaf. The trailblazing Rundgren is also a pioneer in computer technology and multimedia – creating the first color graphics tablet, first interactive album and first interactive concert tour. Todd Rundgren tells Alec how he pulls off making the music he wants to make, how he almost changed careers to become a computer programmer and how psychedelics helped him rethink music completely. On the heels of our conversation with David Wild regarding Ringo Starr's Time Takes Time album, which turns 30 this year, we went a bit deeper. (As if David's great interview with Don Was in that same episode wasn't impressive enough....)Former Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers drummer Stan Lynch (a talented producer and songwriter himself) had the pleasure of co-writing a song for the Ringo album called "Don't Know a Thing About Love." He got on the phone to share his memories of writing the track with Richard Feldman, enlisting Sheryl Crow to sing on the demo and lots more.Stan has new music on tap for release this year from The Speaker Wars and also, The Chefs, his band with Dan Baird, is readying a second course (read: second album).
Todd Rundgren is a multi-talented musician who has made a name for himself both as a solo artist and a visionary music producer. Rundgren's crowning achievement though was producing Meatloaf's album Bat Out Of Hell, which is to this day one of the highest-selling albums of all time. In addition to recently being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rundgren has been busy working on a new album of collaborations called Space Force with artists like Sparks, Rivers Cuomo, and Ben Folds that'll be out later this year. On today's episode we'll hear a conversation Rick Rubin had with Rundgren just weeks before the start of the pandemic. They talk about why he was the only producer who would work on the debut album for Meat Loaf, who just recently passed away. Todd also talks about engineering the third album for The Band when the group was in the midst of turmoil, and why he always turns off Taylor Swift's music. Todd Rundgren has a long and storied history of musical innovation throughout his storied career. In addition to producing a slew of famed records from Meat Loaf, XTC, and The New York Dolls among others, Rundgren is responsible for pioneering the notion of the one-man band via his music, producing and performing every facet of his projects. This has extended to his embrace of new technology, having created several of the first interactive records to have ever existed. In spite of their revolutionary technology, these records were not always well-received. Two in particular from the 1990s, though featuring innovative CD-ROM features to be played on a Windows PC, were largely lambasted by critics as having strayed too far away from Rundgren's signature sound. These records; 1993's No World Order, and 1995's The Individualist are routinely ranked by fans and critics at the bottom of Rundgren's extended discography, and would be his final studio release until 2004.On a new episode of Jukebox Zeroes, Lilz and Patrick are joined by Lilz' own brother Glenn Martin to give a listen to The Individualist, a record the siblings Martin have a strange familiarity and history with. Join them for all manner of discussion regarding Rundgren's over-abundance of ideas, and unfortunate rap sections.#WeAreNormalNow#ShutUp!Local Music Feature: John Powhida International Airport - "Vaguely Like Rock & Roll"

– TV-pucken är första steget in i Svenska Ishockeyförbundets elitförberedande verksamhet.

Despite the fact that Berlin would be considered the standard for early 80's European new wave, the band actually originated in the Los Angeles area. The band had no actual connections with Berlin, but chose the name to make them seem more European and exotic than their own Orange County. Pleasure Victim is Berlin's second studio album and the one that was their breakout success. The group was formed after lead singer Terri Nunn put an advertisement in a musicians magazine that read, “Girl singer looking for a weird rock group.” The other members of the band for this album were John Crawford (bass, synthesizer, vocals, and primary songwriter), David Diamond (synthesizer, guitar, vocals), Daniel Van Patten (percussion), Chris Ruiz-Velasco (guitar), and Ric Olsen (guitar). Ron Learned plays drums on the opening track for the album.Berlin reveled in controversy, being banned on several radio stations for the lyrics from their second single, "Sex (I'm A...)" and reaping the benefits of the publicity that ensued. Rumors about Nunn's underage appearance in Penthouse also boosted the bands notoriety (the rumors were eventually confirmed).Terri Nunn had a career as an actress before joining Berlin, and briefly left the group to continue acting. She auditioned for the part as Princess Leia in "Star Wars" in 1976, losing out to Carrie Fisher for that role.Berlin was influenced by groups like Fleetwood Mac, Jefferson Airplane and David Bowie, and their synth-driven new wave sound is a time stamped icon of the early 80's.Pleasure VictimThe synth-driven title track was the first single released from the album. The song is about a woman who has finally found the person she wants. “You're the passion in me. You've broken down the system. You're the vision I see - a pleasure victim.”Sex (I'm A...)This song is the second single released, and the one that really propelled the group's success. Although many radio stations banned the song, it was a staple of dance clubs everywhere. The song describes a variety of sexual role-playing the woman undertakes. Crawford and Nunn sing this as a duet.MasqueradeThis track is a deeper cut, but still gets some airplay on 80's oriented radio. You really get a sense of Terri Nunn's vocal quality in this tune. The song itself tells of the travails of the singers and bands trying to make it in the music industry. The MetroThe third single from the album was a big hit on both radio and MTV. John Crawford wrote this song about a reverie on a Paris metro after a breakup. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“Ain't Nobody's Business” by B.B. King (from the motion picture “The King of Comedy”)This movie was a satirical comedy, but was a flop. However, it produced a great blues cover from King. STAFF PICKS:Dirty Laundry by Don HenleyBrian's staff pick features former Eagles drummer and vocalist Don Henley on his debut solo album after the Eagles had broken up (or as we would learn in the 90's, took a 14-year vacation). It is a scathing indictment of the media. “Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here. I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear. Come and whisper in my ear. We love dirty laundry.”Der Kommisar by After the FireRob brings us a cover of a song originally recorded by Falco in German. After the Fire was started by Yes keyboardist Peter Banks, and evolved from a prog rock band to a new wave outfit. The song lyrics have a spy theme, chronicling a couple trying to avoid the police. The repeating German line translates to “Everything OK, Officer?” This single US hit became a hit after the band had disbanded. What About Me by Moving PicturesBruce's staff pick features a group popular in Australia which was essentially a one-hit wonder in the States. Songwriter Garry Frost was inspired to write the song when he was working with autistic children in his day job, and watched a small boy not being noticed waiting at the lunch counter one day on his lunch break. Forever Now by The Psychedelic FursWayne's wraps up our staff picks with a fast paced and much deeper piece from a “second British Invasion” group. It is about being in the moment and not wanting the time to end - "Let it stay forever now." Todd Rundgren was producer and a guest musician on this album, and the "wall of sound" approach has Rundgren's imprint. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:(Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth by MetallicaA surprisingly early instrumental by the band that would come to define thrash metal in the years to come closes out this episode. This is off Metallica's debut album.
Label: SGC 001Year: 1969Condition: M-Last Price: $18.00. Not currently available for sale. Here's a beautiful copy of the third pressing of this classic single. Though the A side is the band's most famous song and was a hit again for Nazz's guitarist and songwriter, Todd Rundgren, in 1973—in fact, it was Rundgren's biggest hit and only top 10 single—my personal fave is the terrific, snarly B side. Rundgren had clearly been listening to the Who, but that's OK: It's a great song and a great sound! That Nazz and SGC thought so, too, is evidenced by the fact that "Open My Eyes" was the original A side of the single when it was first released in 1968. As the chart information shows, "Eyes" charted nearly 6 months before "Hello" started up the chart. Note: This copy comes in a vintage Atlantic/Atco/Cotillion Records factory sleeve. It has Near Mint labels, and the vinyl has only some light scuffs. The audio grades Near Mint with hardly any surface noise and no distortion on the B side but a bit more surface noise on the quiet A side.
Today we discussed the importance of inspiration and creativity in any creative field as well as the difficulties involved when inspiration runs dry which happens to all artists of any kind and how to find it again. We also oddly end up discussing architecture and how all of this stems from the biospirit.
Today in a sequel to the Soul of Art with Aethelwulf today we continued that conversation. Discussing the spiritual and cultural significance of art. Various styles, various types, including animation, sculpture, and more. Art is a way of manifesting the divine in physical form. This was an important one in this Hiatus Special.

Amon Düül II - Kismet (1978) From Wikipedia: Amon Düül began in 1967 as a radical political art commune of Munich-based artists calling themselves, in part, after the Egyptian Sun God Amon. The word Düül originally had no intended meaning. The commune attained underground popularity for its free-form musical improvisations, performed around the happenings and demonstrations of the youth movement at the time. The commune had a liberal attitude to artistic freedom, valuing enthusiasm and attitude over artistic ability, and as a result, band membership was fluid; anyone who was part of the commune could be part of the group. They issued a declaration: "We are eleven adults and two children which are gathered to make all kinds of expressions, also musical."[5] A faction within the commune was more ambitious, conventional, and musically structured than the commune society overall. This led to a split within the collective, and in September 1968 they performed at the International Essen Song Days—Germany's first underground festival—as two groups, "Amon Düül" and "Amon Düül II", at the suggestion of drummer Peter Leopold. Amon Düül engaged in exuberant open-ended experimentation that at times equaled their psychedelic rock equivalents in countries such as the USA or Brazil (e.g. [Ed: The vastly better] Os Mutantes), with a focus on political activities. The members were close to Kommune 1 in Berlin and boasted, for a time, a prominent member in the model and activist Uschi Obermaier. Amon Düül signed a contract with the firm "Metronome Records", and continued for seven years with varying degrees of success and in various guises. They wound down in 1973 after releasing four official albums (and a posthumous fifth), though all except one were recorded at the 1968 sessions for their debut. Apparently, the man responsible was producer Peter Meisel, who released the albums without the band's approval in an attempt to capitalize on the success of Amon Düül II. The LPs are these days regarded as unique, if unessential, records in the history of German rock. In contrast, their Paradieswärts Düül album featured a pastoral, folk-influenced sound. The name 'Amon Düül' was trademarked by Chris Karrer and Peter Leopold of Amon Düül II, meaning that re-issues of Amon Düül's albums required to license the name from them. Like so so so so so many acts of the day, Amon Düül started out with a pure, sincere (if unlistenable) concept and ended up doing disco. Carole King - Disco Tech (1978) And ended up doing disco! During the nadir of her career, Carole King recorded with a band named Navarro, which co-wrote this dreck. They themselves put out two albums in the later '70s and faded away. Carole King returned in the video era with a song called "City Streets" which, to my ears, sounds so trite and overproduced that it literally means nothing. Her fella at the time died shortly after this was recorded. That's him on the cover. Hello People - Future Shock (1974) Hello People - Destiny (1974) Hello People - Creego (1974) Two versions. One produced by Rundgren, and the other (somehow...better) recorded at home with fine TEAC equipment. With the rock-steady guidance of Todd Rundgren and the big break of being asked to team up with TEAC to show off the possibilities of new reel-to-reel home recording technology, it seemed like a match made in heaven. Bowie. Alice Cooper. Peter Gabriel. Mime Rock was due. Alas, it was not to be. I am the proud owner of both of these records, and I feel very, very alone. And yes, they cover "Just One Victory". From Discogs: "Recording demonstration; from microphone placing, editing, balancing, channeling, terminology, sound recording & effects. One full-length song in this recording, it was not recorded inside a Studio; instead, it was fully recorded in someone's house to demonstrate the flexibility of the TEAC multi-track tape record. Many clear examples of what it takes to record a song, all the potential obstacles that come with making a song using all analog instruments. Home recording tips; recording at home with the 3340-S multi-track tape recorder can offer many of the important elements of the studio experience without the bill. No experience required; you have the opportunity to work ideas in private and to experiment with your own sounds, and learn what you need to know at your own pace. Recording music, like making music, is fun as it is challenging." Daddy Dewdrop - Nanu Nanu (I Wanna Get Funky Wich You) (1978) His big hit was "Chick-a-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)". This is a mawkish attempt at a cash-in. Deftly combining the Mork and Mindy zeitgeist with the Disco zeitgeist, he somehow creates something unlistenable and cheap. His website claims he wrote a song for Ringo Starr. Or that Ringo covered a song of his. That song, "I Wanna Be Santa Claus", was co-written by Mark Hudson, who was the lead singer of The Hudson Brothers, who POACA will remember as the bearded fellow on The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show, which aired on Saturday mornings, from September 7, 1974, to August 30, 1975. Chuckie Margolis!!! Ahahahah..... The brothers released "serious" albums throughout the '70s. Donny and Marie - I Want It Back (1978) From the movie Goin' Coconuts, which is a graphic retelling of the Dresden bombing. Graphic. Franki Vallli - Save Me, Save Me (1978) From the album titled, "...Is The Word". Let there be no mistake. He had lots of momentum. Pretty good shelf-life for a '60s singer. His career was revitalized in 1975 with "December, 1963 (Oh, What A Night)" and "Who Loves You". I like Frankie Valli very much. You hear his voice and you know. I think of all the crooners from back then, he deserves his revivals. It didn't hurt to have Barry Gibb behind you in 1978. In a sense, they were contemporaries from different places. And he was in "The Sopranos". If after one listen you can't tell who wrote this, you are in the wrong place. Off with you!!! Gnidrolog - Snails (1972) No one mentions Gnidrolog when they are listing good prog bands. Believe me. I was swimming in the prog for a good decade, and not one soul mentioned them. If I were to compare their two albums to any other artists, it would be Octopus-era Gentle Giant or Gong. I really like them. They didn't last long, but I think their productions were nice. Especially... Gnidrolog - Social Embarrassment (1972) Members Colin Goldring (vocals / guitar) and Stewart Goldring (guitar / vocals) went on to form Pork Dukes, and either ironically or to satisfy a hunger for, you know, the Zeitgeist, made the lyrics base and the music basic. One album and no one cared. Jay Traynor - Love Is In The Air (1978) Jay Traynor of Jay and the Americans tries to jump onto the Disco train by covering the 1977 hit by John Paul Young. Look carefully at the composers. Kitty and the Haywoods - Disco FairyLand (1978) Kitty had a long recording history as a background vocalist for such acts as Curtis Mayfield. She was also a member of The New Rotary Connection after Minnie Riperton departed Rotary Connection. Kristie and Jimmy McNichol - Hot Tunes (1978) It was "Little Darlings". Little Nell - Fever (1978) Too much cocaine will make the dancers dance to everything. Lenny McDowell - Locomotive Breath (1978) And what better way to bring another award-wanting episode to a close than to play a flute version of "Locomotive Breath".
Artists are curious creatures. Many of them are restless souls who constantly obsess over their art and think a lot about the finished product, often for years after it has been released to the public. I would guess that Pablo Picasso would probably look at a work of his from decades earlier and immediately begin thinking of ways to change it to reflect his current self, as artists are want to change themselves over time just like the rest of us. Well, in music, sometimes artists are afforded the opportunity to bring up a piece from the past and reimagine it as something completely different, often for personal reasons. Thankfully many of these reimaginings are quite excellent and Pal O The Pod Jeff Axelrod joins to help us count down our favorites. On episode 4 of Past Prime, Matty (reluctantly) and Steve (religiously) buckle up for the legendarily wild, bloated, melodramatic, 1993 smash "Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell." Written and produced by mad-scientist, Jim Steinman, and performed by his inimitable Frankenstein, Meat Loaf, the album is the sequel to 1977s triumph, "Bat Out of Hell." Steve is an elite Steinman-ologist while Matty has avoided this album for decades, in part because of Steve's devotion, which briefly bordered on addiction. The duo discuss how Steinman / Loaf music was born from the same seed as "Born to Run" and how the campy soap opera was decidedly intentional for Steinman but may have been less so for Meat Loaf. They sumo wrestle with the length and girth of the album and whether the "Rundgren cut" would have been better. Ultimately, however, the two middle-aged friends have to respectfully agree to disagree. Steve finally admits that he likes gold toilets and that this is his diamond-crusted gold toilet. And Matty admits that he loves Ben & Jerry's "Vermonsters" but that this sounds like a Vermonster topped with a Vermonster. In a touching moment, Steve agrees that he would be open to a shorter edit of the album and Matty apologizes for "yucking Steve's yum." To read more about Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell," check out the full essay at Past Prime.
