Rockshow Episode 204 The TubesThe Tubes are a rock band that formed in San Francisco in 1972. They are best known for their theatrical live performances, blending rock, punk, satire, and outrageous costumes, creating a style that was both eccentric and influential in the late 1970s and 1980s.Founding Members: The band was originally formed by members from two Phoenix, Arizona bands who moved to San Francisco. The core members included: • Fee Waybill (vocals) • Bill Spooner (guitar, vocals) • Roger Steen (guitar, vocals) • Rick Anderson (bass) • Prairie Prince (drums) • Michael Cotten (keyboards) • Vince Welnick (keyboards) • Musical Style: Their music blends rock with elements of punk, new wave, and progressive rock. While their music was solid, they are best remembered for their extravagant live shows that parodied media, pop culture, and consumerism. Their shows were often theatrical, featuring elaborate set designs and costumes, blending comedy, social commentary, and rock music. • Breakthrough and Notable Albums: • The Tubes (1975): Their self-titled debut album included the single “White Punks on Dope,” which became one of their signature songs, known for its irreverent critique of the excesses of Los Angeles youth culture. • Young and Rich (1976) and Now (1977): These albums continued their satirical themes and unique blend of rock and performance art. • Remote Control (1979): Produced by Todd Rundgren, this concept album critiqued television and media culture, marking a shift toward a more polished and cohesive sound. • Completion Backward Principle (1981): This album marked their move towards mainstream success, featuring the hit singles “Talk to Ya Later” and “Don't Want to Wait Anymore.” The band began incorporating more polished pop and rock elements, appealing to a wider audience. • Commercial Success: Their biggest commercial success came with Completion Backward Principle and Outside Inside (1983), which included their most famous single, “She's a Beauty.” This song reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gave the band significant radio and MTV airplay during the early 1980s. • Live Performances: The Tubes were particularly famous for their live performances, which included elaborate, theatrical shows often featuring Fee Waybill taking on various personas, including the infamous “Quay Lewd,” a character representing the decadent rock star lifestyle. • Later Years: The Tubes continued to tour through the 1980s and into the present, though they underwent lineup changes, including the departure of keyboardist Vince Welnick, who later joined the Grateful Dead. While their commercial success waned after the mid-1980s, they retained a dedicated fan base and continued performing live, celebrated for their innovation and influence on rock theater and performance art.Legacy:The Tubes' combination of humor, social critique, and musical innovation made them a unique force in rock. Their over-the-top performances influenced bands like Alice Cooper and later artists in the glam and punk scenes. Despite their often niche appeal, songs like “She's a Beauty” cemented their place in rock history.https://music.youtube.com/channel/UCvi9BIX7PSQcRj-sfBENAnw?si=CdeZZpnO72vcw53Zhttps://youtube.com/@thetubesgroup?si=TfsfJY7v1k0NJd8_https://thetubes.com/https://www.facebook.com/share/ntgwQGjZhzHnAS8M/?mibextid=LQQJ4dhttps://x.com/thetubesgroup?s=21&t=Mzw5de5zsR-SDDbhyzH0Lghttps://www.instagram.com/thetubesgroup?igsh=MXY4dmRyMGR6dGZ6dA==#TheTubes #RockBand#WhitePunksOnDope#ShesABeauty #FeeWaybill#ClassicRock #70sRock #80sRock#newwave #TalkToYaLater#CompletionBackwardPrinciple#LivePerformance #RockTheater#SatireRock #ToddRundgrenProducedPlease follow us on Youtube,Facebook,Instagram,Twitter,Patreon and at www.gettinglumpedup.comhttps://linktr.ee/RobRossiGet your T-shirt at https://www.prowrestlingtees.com/gettinglumpeduphttps://www.patreon.com/Gettinglumpedup

Best known as the current drummer for the band, Tears For Fears, a position he has held since 2010, Jamie is an in demand musician who, at the age of 13 became inspired to pursue drumming after attending a concert by the band KISS. He went on to develop his skills by playing along with the albums that inspired him during his formulative years, mostly in the hard rock and metal genre of the day. At the age of 18, he attended The Percussion Institute in Hollywood, CA, where after studying with some renowned educators, he graduated with honours in 1989. Jamie landed his first professional touring gig with Michael Sweet, of the band, Styper. This began his career as a touring and session drummer. In addition to Tears For Fears, He has had the privilege of touring with a variety of other artists including Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Tommy Shaw, Fee Waybill and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello's solo project, The Nightwatchman. As a musician, Jamie has also begun composing and producing music for television, film, as well as other artists. In our interview, we talk about how important it is to remain committed to your craft despite the many personal and professional challenges you may encounter, why you always need to stay humble and show gratitude even during the challenging times, and also that it is essential for our well being and mental health to always have a creative outlet to express ourselves.
#$@% yeah, it's another ^#%* episode of Only Three Lads! And it's Uncle Gregg's $#!@-tastic birthday, and he'll ^@$& if he wants to! This week, we use a lot of four letter words...but it's not nearly as tawdry as you think. We're covering songs with four letters in the title. Plus: Uncle Gregg is unemployed! Fee Waybill's #*@%! Vampelephants! Our O3L Spotlight Artist of the Week is Nottingham, England's Peter Hall. In a modern musical landscape that uses a term like "bangers," Hall revels in melodic indie rock that reminds listeners of what true songcraft can be. His new mini-album, About Last Night, is out now on Subjangle: https://peterhallmusic.bandcamp.com/album/about-last-night From this release, we play the stunning "For Love."

Today I sit down with another San Francisco Bay Area legend Mr Fee Waybill of The Tubes. Growing up in the 70's in the Bay Area I was lucky to see some incredible live music. 1 band that really blew my young mind was The Tubes. The first time I saw them I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing. White Punks on Dope was a San Francisco Anthem and I was on board. Over the years I would go on to see this band many times and I was always fascinated with the lead singer Fee Waybill. He is such an electric frontman and I feel like this band is massively underrated. Do yourself a favor and dive into their music. Start with my favorite record Remote Control. Go see The Tubes live this summer. This episode is brought to you by https://www.manscaped.com use the code delray20 for 20% off and free shipping. Your one stop shop for all your Man trimming Goods.

On this episode of The Fred Minnick Show, musician, actor and producer Fee Waybill joins in. Waybill was front man for 1970s-1980s hitmakers The Tubes and also worked with artists such as Toto, Richard Marx and Bryan Adams. He also has appeared on television and film, including a cameo in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure." He sits down with Fred to talk about his diverse career, getting back to touring, the band's reputation for being over the top and, of course, he tastes some bourbon. Whiskeys tasted: Chapin and Gore Vintage (06:10) 291 Colorado Whiskey (19:33) Barrell Bourbon 15 Year Old (53:14) Diplomatico Rum (1:06:00) EPISODE SUMMARY Fred and Fee talk about a wide variety of things, such as: They start with the Chapin and Gore whiskey from the 1970s, which is around the time when The Tubes were just bursting onto the music landscape. Fred gives Fee a quick education on what bourbon is versus whiskey. Fee talks about performing in the early days, telling the story of his stage manager Chopper always having a joint rolled and ready for him when he walked off stage. When he started drinking, it began with Jack Daniel's. These days, it's single malt Scotch whisky. Fred asks about Fee's on-camera chemistry with David Letterman. Turns out Fee knew Letterman's girlfriend, who was a huge fan of The Tubes. They move to the 291 Colorado Whiskey, and Fee immediately exclaims, "Oh, it's hot!" But his taste buds quickly acclimate. Talk turns to the inability for artists to make money from streaming. "The only way we can make money these days is by live performance and selling merchandise," Fee says. Of course, the pandemic wiped out most of that income. Fee talks about the timeline of The Tubes, which broke up in the 1980s, but got back together in 1994. They're still together, although they haven't played a live show since January 2020, thanks to covid. Plans are in the works for live shows later this summer. Fee recalls when the band "ruled" San Francisco, back in the days when they would put topless girls onstage to dance during shows. In Kansas City, they had to play under a $10,000 "obscenity bond." But fee insists there was no truth to the rumors of live sex onstage. He talks about meeting Richard Marx and about recording the Tubes' hit "She's a Beauty." The two became good friends, and Fee has written many songs with him. Much of their work culminated in a Fee Waybill solo album. The Barrell Bourbon is broken out, but Fee admits he's "Pretty much done already." The high-proof Colorado Whiskey tends to do that. Then Fee starts talking about Pavarotti and a duet he did with James Brown. Pavarotti sang his part in Italian, and the Tubes ended up performing a parody of it. Fred goes to the subject of Fee's acting career, and Fee says he is "obsessed" with making it to Broadway. Specifically, he wants to play the part of the King in "Hamilton." He then tells the story of being cast as Frankfurter in a production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Fee's dog Daisy makes a brief appearance. They go to the final pour, Diplomatico rum. Fee picks the Barrell Bourbon as his favorite of the session. It's rare to meet a hero. I have been a Tubes fan and, subsequently, a massive Fee Waybill fan by default since I was old enough to understand their music and subversive nature. They were a cosmic force, built in the 60's and unleashed on the world in the 70's. They had it all. Musicianship, showmanship, and crazy bonkers attitude. There was no stopping them.Interviewing Fee was a dream and if I have anything to say about it, the dream will continue another day soon. For now, you'll have to be satisfied with what I got until I get more. From the late 70s til the mid 80s Jerry drummed for Peter Gabriel AND Hall and Oates at the same time! When those gigs came to an end he joined up with the Indigo Girls for a while. Along the way he recorded with the likes of Paul McCartney, Tears For Fears, Robbie Robertson, Fee Waybill, Sarah McLachlan, Los Lobos, Cher, John Mayer, and a bunch of others. Jerry is one of those brutally honest interviews and we hear amazing stories about all of these people, as well as the many things he's working on today. This one's another instant classic. The Tubes were revolutionary for their time, mixing rock music and theatricality in a way few others were doing. At the center stage stood Fee Waybill, one of the greatest frontmen in rock history and one of the most fascinating entertainers ever. Though the Tubes staged legendary performances, they didn't garner any hits until the early 80s when they teamed up with a young David Foster and released singles like "She's a Beauty" and "Don't Want to Wait Anymore" that still get played today. Unfortunately, with success came a splintering in the band. In this conversation, Fee candidly talks about what brought the band down, how he got them out of debt, and what he did after it ended, which included collaborating with best friend Richard Marx just as his career launched into the stratosphere. There are also acting jobs, a property management career, a Tubes comeback and the craziest David Bowie story you'll ever hear. There's no one like Fee Waybill. He's as good as it gets! http://www.thetubes.com/
From his humble beginnings in Nebraska, to working his way into a band as a backing vocalist, to fronting the band that eventually became The Tubes, Fee Waybill was born to entertain. But being the front man in the band wasn’t just about singing the tunes. The Tubes live performances were an extravaganza of bondage, simulated sex, chainsaws, phallic props, smashing televisions, and often partially nude dancers and band members. Not only were The Tubes pioneers of incorporating theatrics and shock value into their live shows, but they were also a band of brilliant musicians. Their early albums were a fusion of rock and jazz that were comparable to Zappa and incorporated lyrics that satirized pop culture, politics, religion and even sexual taboos. They garnered a cult following, but didn’t have a major hit on their hands until they connected with producer David Foster in 1981. Together with Steve Lukather, the Tubes scored their first major hit “Talk To Ya’ Later” and two years later topped its success with the even more successful “She’s A Beauty.” But as mentioned before, Fee is a man of many talents and he’s here to tell us all about them.
