This show is inspired by the podcast Other People’s Pockets and seeks to bring transparency around what SLPs are being paid. Salary stagnation continues to be one of the issues plaguing SLP careers and is worsened by companies preying on new grads who are unaware of what to expect or how to negotiate an appropriate wage. This podcast seeks to arm SLPs with the knowledge they need to increase their own pay, thus elevating our field as a whole.

"We need a union!" is often one of the first rallying cries when SLPs get together to bemoan the pay problem in our field. But are unions the answer? Meet "Marie" who shares what it's like to work in a state largely dominated by unions that get SLPs "stuck on a teacher pay scale." We also discuss licensing gatekeeping and the fact that multiple state, interstate, and national licenses are perceived as required for this profession when other professions only require a state license.THANK YOU to our sponsors for this podcast: Phonological and Articulation Children's BooksEmail us hello@otherslpspockets.com. SLPs are often employed by companies who do not understand the value that SLPs bring to the bottom line (not to mention to the humans that they serve). How do we ditch our imposter syndrome, know our worth, and communicate that worth clearly to our employers? How can this translate to better working relationships, more respect (for ourselves and from others), and better pay? There is an invisible force shaping our day-to-day jobs. It's the force that is dictating 80%+ productivity requirements, mandated group therapy sessions, unethical billing, and reduced staff ratios. It's the group of people who are actively working to extract as much profit as possible as fast as possible from healthcare facilities. It is known as private equity and it is hurting all SLPs. What is it, how is it affecting our jobs and our patients, and how can we stop it? These are all questions we explore with Matt Parr and Michael Fenne of the Private Equity Stakeholder project in this bonus "hot pockets" episode of Other SLPs' Pockets.Link: The Private Equity Stakeholder ProjectLink: Therapists for People Over ProfitEmail us hello@otherslpspockets.com.
