"One of the many wonderful things about working as a speech language pathologist is that you can structure the work that you do based on your circumstances at any turning point of your life. The setting you work in, the kinds of clients your work with, the specific modalities that you offer, can all be created by you. When my son was born I wanted to be home every evening and on weekends, so I structured my private practice to make that happen. Earlier in my career my schedule and client base was quite different, which was ideal for that time in my life. But whatever the structure of my work, the thing that I really love about practicing speech language pathology is my one-on-one time with kids--there's something beautiful that happens in those moments when I am able to use my passion and expertise to help kids that stutter become happy, healthy, effective communicators and help families better understand how to best support their loved one who stutters." Susie Harder, M.A., CCC-SLP is an experienced, licensed speech-language pathologist and Director of Central Valley Stuttering Center in Clovis, CA. She devotes much of her passion to working with children who stutter. She works in private practice and with schools to help support children and provides workshops and consulting-based support to families and school districts. She is also the founder and CEO of Authorable, a program that turns third through sixth graders into authors, creators, and leaders through real book-making experiences.

Send us Fan Mail Nobody warns you about this part of parenting. The kids are older, more independent, and they don't need you the same way they used to — and somehow that is one of the hardest transitions of all. In this episode, I'm sharing Leah Davidson's Building Resilience podcast as part of my Mental Health Awareness Month collaboration with parent coaches. Leah is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Nervous System Resilience Coach, and in this episode, she breaks down why your calm matters more than your advice, how overfunctioning actually creates distance instead of closeness, and what it looks like to parent from regulation instead of reflex. If you have teens or adult children and you've ever felt the pull to fix, rescue, or hold it all together — this one is for you. Leah Davidson is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Nervous System Resilience Coach with over 26 years of experience in brain and nervous system health. She works primarily with women in midlife, helping them understand their changing nervous systems and build resilience from the inside out. She offers small group programs, an online community, international retreats, and an Advanced Training in Nervous System Resilience for coaches and helping professionals who want to go deeper in this work. You can find her here:

Hey Friends~  Many parents think reading begins with letters, flashcards, and sounding out words. But the foundation for reading actually begins much earlier—through listening, sound play, hearing sound patterns, understanding language, building vocabulary, and everyday conversation. So whether you have a toddler and want to give them the strongest start possible… or you have an older child who struggles with reading and you've wondered, “What are we missing?” …this episode is going to shed light on important skills that might need to be fortified. Today, I'm joined by speech language pathologist, Sarah James as she unpacks the building blocks that support reading success and explains what the research actually shows makes the biggest impacts on a child's ability to learn to read. You'll begin to understand how speech and language skills are deeply connected to literacy, and why some struggles may actually begin long before a child ever sits down with a book.   This conversation will likely cause you to see reading through a whole new lens. I speak with Stephanie Harrigan, a certified speech language pathologist with nearly fifteen years of experience working with the neurodiverse population, to talk about selective mutism, feeding therapy and more.Stephanie brings a regulation-first, child-led approach to all of her work, and this conversation is full of concrete examples from her practice, including what feeding therapy actually looks like when it follows the child's lead, how she has worked with selectively mute children, and what she has seen happen to communication when behavioral pressure is removed. We also talk about how to advocate effectively with a school team and what research Stephanie uses when making the case for a non-behavioral approach.Stephanie can be reached at Inclusive Minds Educational Consulting via inclusivemindsllc@gmail.com.Key TakeawaysRegulation Before Skills, Always | 00:07:00 Stephanie describes how her approach across all of her work, whether feeding, Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) speech therapy, or selective mutism, starts with regulation. She references her time at the Center for Discovery, where the entire program was built on the belief that sensory and emotional regulation is the foundation. Without it, she says, everything else crumbles. She uses the analogy of a house: regulation is the foundation, and speech and communication goals sit on top of it. What Child-Led Feeding Therapy Looks Like | 00:18:32 Stephanie gives two concrete examples from her feeding therapy work. One student only ate hot dogs at age sixteen. Rather than introducing new foods directly, she used the student's interest in small figurines to interact playfully with food. Another student loved baking but would not eat what they made, so they baked together and delivered food across campus. Stephanie explains that child-led feeding therapy means finding the child's special interest and embedding it into the work, with no timeline for progress and no pressure toward any specific outcome. Selective Mutism and the Role of Safety | 00:24:28 Stephanie describes working with a kindergarten student who was described by staff as someone who never spoke. In her first session with him, he spoke immediately. She attributes this to the felt safety she worked to establish before anything else. She describes how she uses a total communication approach, honors every form of communication including grunting and hissing, and matches the child's energy rather than bringing high excitement.AAC Is Not a Last Resort | 00:30:29 Stephanie explains what AAC is and pushes back on the common concern that using a device will prevent a child from learning to speak. She draws a parallel to what Casey describes with PDA children more broadly: the issue is often not that the child lacks the ability, but that at times stress and sensory dysregulation are blocking access to that ability. She describes seeing communication expand when sensory needs were addressed first, and frames AAC as one tool in a total communication approach rather than a replacement for speech. How to Work With a School Team as a PDA Parent | 00:48:57 Stephanie's advice for parents trying to collaborate with a school team is to not be afraid to advocate. She says she has never viewed a parent as challenging, and that strong advocacy is not only a parent's right but something she personally appreciates. She suggests sharing resources from a place of curiosity rather than confrontation, asking for the team's expertise, and framing questions as "I found this and I'm curious what you think" rather than leading with disagreement. Hearing aids open the door to sound. But navigating school, talking to teachers, and supporting your child at home is a whole separate journey. We talk honestly about the moment many families don't expect: the hearing aids help, but they don't magically solve noisy classrooms, fast directions, or social chaos in hallways and lunchrooms. Dana breaks down the difference between hearing in quiet and functional listening in real-world environments, plus what “total communication” really looks like at school and at home.A major part of our conversation is advocacy. Dana walks through pushing for a 504 plan, getting denied because Emma was “doing well,” and what it took to reconvene with the right team and the right understanding of how accommodations work. Today, Lara sits down with Paige O'Dwyer, a pediatric speech-language pathologist and mom of two who's on a mission to change how parents think about language and communication—especially when you're watching your child and quietly wondering, “Should they be talking more by now?” Paige helps families ditch the pressure, move away from drills and flashcards, and understand what truly comes before words: connection, shared attention, play, and felt safety. Based in Red Deer, Alberta, Paige supports families through her pediatric practice and her online platform TALK, where she coaches parents with practical, doable strategies that fit into real life—not one more thing to add to your plate. She specializes in early communication, supporting late talkers, and helping parents meet their child exactly where they are—without fear, shame, or overwhelm. In this episode, we talk about how language development has changed, what parents worry about most, and how everyday moments—playtime, mealtime, getting dressed, bath time—can become powerful opportunities for communication and connection. Paige explains why language is about more than words, what parents can focus on right now (even if their child isn't talking yet), and how to support communication in ways that feel natural, calm, and realistic.Whether you're worried about a late talker, feel stuck comparing your child to others, or just want a more confident approach to communication, this conversation will leave you feeling reassured, supported, and empowered. In today's episode, we cover:What “late talking” can look like—and what actually matters most early onWhy drills and flashcards often miss the point (and what to do instead)The building blocks that come before words: connection, attention, and playHow to turn everyday routines into language-rich moments without extra timeWhat to say (and what not to say) when you're trying to help your child communicateHow to reduce pressure while still making meaningful progressMeet our guest:Paige O'Dwyer is a pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist and the creator of TALK, an online coaching platform designed to make speech and language support more accessible for families. Hey Friends~ *SPECIAL EPISODE* Podcasthon Highlighted Charity:  Small Steps in Speech with Amanda Charney-Berardi. If you're a parent, caregiver, or professional who's ever worried about a child being misunderstood… if you've wondered whether listening, play, and connection really matter as much as we say they do… or if you believe that every child deserves support—not just the lucky ones—then this episode is for you. Today's conversation is part of Podcasthon, a worldwide charity event where thousands of podcasts come together during one week to release special episodes in support of causes that matter deeply to them. The ability to express ourselves through speech remains one of the most important ways we communicate. It’s at the root of how we connect, understand each other, and even how we explore our own identities. From childhood, we learn that what we say and how we’re able to say it can impact how we move through the world. Speech pathologists help those of us who experience challenges in expressing our thoughts and processing language. And as important as this work is, there are still disparities in who receives care. This week we're excited to welcome Dr. Dawn Ellis, a Speech-Language Pathologist, advocate, and educator whose journey led her to a career helping children, families, and communities communicate with confidence. In this conversation, we explore language development, identity, and how communication intersects with mental health, particularly for Black women and families. About the Podcast The Therapy for Black Girls Podcast is a weekly conversation with Dr. Joy Harden Bradford, a licensed Psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, about all things mental health, personal development, and all the small decisions we can make to become the best possible versions of ourselves. What if speech challenges, jaw pain, mouth breathing, or even poor sleep weren't just isolated issues — but nervous system signals? In this week's episode, I sit down with Denise Lowe, Speech Language Pathologist, to explore the powerful connection between oral function, nervous system regulation, and whole-body health. We unpack: • What myofunctional therapy actually is • Why tongue posture, swallowing patterns, and breathing matter more than you think • The hidden signs parents often miss in their children • How jaw tension, clenching, and grinding connect to stress physiology • What Neuro Emotional Technique (NET) is — and how it helps regulate subconscious stress patterns • Why addressing both structure and nervous system function changes outcomes This conversation goes far beyond articulation. We talk about sleep quality, TMD, chronic tension, airway development, communication struggles, and the emotional patterns that can quietly drive physical symptoms. If you or your child experience mouth breathing, speech delays, clenching, jaw pain, chronic tension, or sleep disruption — this episode will open your eyes to a deeper root-cause lens. Because healing isn't just mechanical. It's neurological. It's emotional. And it's functional. Podcast Offer Denise is offering a $99 initial Neuro Emotional Technique session when you mention this podcast. Offer valid through March 28th, 2026. If you have been curious about nervous system work but didn't know where to begin — this is a beautiful entry point. March 23: 10-Day Blood Sugar Reset And if this episode sparked curiosity about the nervous system's role in metabolism, inflammation, or stress — my 10-Day Blood Sugar Reset kicks off March 23rd. Blood sugar dysregulation affects: • Mood • Hormones • Sleep • Energy • Inflammation • Cravings • Nervous system stability This guided reset walks you through simple, strategic changes to stabilize glucose, calm stress physiology, and reclaim metabolic resilience. She was diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum in 1999. Most of her career has been spent in school-based practice. Susan has been a keynote speaker and presenter at various conferences. Susan developed the Neuro-Strengths Based Support for Autism Framework, which comes from her personal experience as an autistic individual and professional experience as an occupational therapist who worked with autistic clients. She grew up trying to “be like everyone else;” she succeeded in masking but at the cost of never developing a sense of “self,” which led to symptoms of post-traumatic stress. When she was finally diagnosed in my early 50s, I learned that there were other options for how to think and behave, which radically changed my life for the better. "The excitement that the kids feel when they are seeing you... and they know today's session with Ms. Luba and they can't wait to see you." - Luba Kaplan When a child enters the medical system, parents often meet many specialists beyond doctors and nurses, including Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP). These professionals are vital members of the healthcare team, doing more than just helping with speech. SLPs, as Luba Kaplan explains, also explains how they look at every area of the child's development to ensure children are being fully supported. In this episode, we introduce Luba Kaplan, a passionate SLP, Oral Myofunction Therapist, and mother of three who is the visionary behind Kidology. Celebrating 10 years in private practice, Luba has made it her mission to bridge gaps in access to therapy. She even created the Therapy Bus—a half-size school bus that travels to families who can't leave home or have transportation issues. About Our Guest: Luba Kaplan, SLP Luba Kaplan is a Speech-Language Pathologist and Oral Myofunction Therapist. As the founder and owner of Kidology, she has built a practice that offers a multidisciplinary, team approach to therapy, including Speech, Occupational, Physical, and Behavioral services. Luba is driven by a deep passion for helping families achieve change and is dedicated to cancer research in honor of her mother, Angela, who worked in oncology research for 25 years. Luba on Social Media: TikTok, Instagram, Facebook: @KidologyInc (KIDOLOGYINC) YouTube Channel: Find Kidology's content on YouTube Key SLP Insights for Medical Parents Luba shares crucial advice for working effectively with a Speech-Language Pathologist: Build Strong Rapport: Share everything that is going on in your child's life, even seemingly small struggles like a supermarket meltdown. The more the provider knows, the more they can help. Look for a Global Approach: Seek a provider who utilizes a multidisciplinary, team approach and is willing to screen for or refer to other needed services (OT, PT, behavioral services). Early Intervention is Key: Don't wait or assume your child will simply "grow out of it.". Addressing issues sooner, not later, can put your child ahead. Ensure Family Alignment: Everyone in the child's life (parents, grandparents, etc.) must be on the same page with the therapy goals to ensure the proper foundation for progress. Otherwise, therapy won't work. Trust the Independent Session: While parental presence is key in a hospital setting, giving your child space to learn independently in a non-threatening environment allows them to develop their own voice and thrive with the therapist. Stay Committed: Stick with the therapy program even when you think your child is "okay". Commitment is essential for your child to be better off post-program. Episode Timeline Highlights 00:00: Introduction to the role of a Speech-Language Pathologist. 01:00: Introducing Luba Kaplan, the visionary behind Kidology and the innovative Therapy Bus. 02:30: Luba's passion for change and her personal connection to cancer research. 06:00: Tips for parents on finding an impactful provider and the necessity of sharing full history. 09:30: Navigating the system and the need for a team approach in therapy. 11:00: Strategies for carryover at home: portals, homework, and getting the whole family on the same page. 15:45: The difference between presence in an acute trauma setting (hospital) vs. a non-threatening environment (therapy clinic). 19:30: The growth of Kidology: from one suburban office to two central clinics with play gyms. 22:00: Final takeaways: the importance of commitment and not delaying intervention. “We don't need to work on decoding because students have access to assistive technology and accommodations.”“We don't work on word-decoding in high school.”“Working on reading in high school is too little too late.”If you've ever heard any of these arguments, you're not alone. Unfortunately, beliefs like these do students a huge disservice. That's why in this conversation, I share a clip from my interview with Tom Parton, an SLP with a long-career of experience in secondary education, as well as literacy advocacy work. Tom Parton is a private Speech Language Pathologist in Normal, Illinois. He retired after 35 years of public-school practice. Tom is President of Everyone Reading Illinois and is a member of ERI's Legislative Committee. Tom has presented on autism and language/literacy topics at local, state, and national conferences. Tom participated in the ISBE Reading Instruction Advisory Group and Teachers of Reading Certification task forces. He is currently a member of the ISBE Dyslexia Handbook revision team. He is past-president of the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association and is ISHA Honors Committee co-chair and a member of ISHA's Leadership Development Committee. Tom is the 2024 chair of the American Speech Language Hearing Association Committee of Ambassadors. In my commentary and the clip from the interview, you'll hear discussion on:✅ Why providing access to technology alone won't solve access issues if kids lack adequate reading and spelling skills. ✅ Why accommodations and modifications aren't a substitute for reading instruction, even in secondary school. ✅ The impact of word-decoding on activities of daily living. If you're serving students in secondary school, you won't want to miss this episode.
