Senior doctors will be walking off the job in May, looking for a 12 percent pay rise. The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists announced a 24-hour strike would take place starting on May 1. It could affect 4300 planned procedures or first specialist appointments - and up to 4300 radiology appointments. Association executive director Sarah Dalton says claims specialists make more than $300,000 dollars a year are wrong. "It's probably closer to $240,000 - which still sounds like a lot, right? But we have to think about what senior doctors actually do." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Half of the Government's $400m savings target has come out of Heath NZ in the form of contractors and consultant spending. The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Executive director Sarah Dalton says isn't happy about the cuts. "This seems flagrant in terms of taking the short-term option, not looking a little bit further down the road," she said. LISTEN ABOVE. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There are fears public health doctors are losing their ability to speak freely. They're being told they need permission before speaking out on regional issues which could impact public health. Health Minister Simeon Brown says he's fed up with them giving advice on things like fast-food. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Executive Director Sarah Dalton told Francesca Rudkin Brown is overstepping. She says there are widespread concerns of attempts to silence doctors – to stop them speaking up on public health and patient safety issues. The Government's being accused of having no vision for the struggling health sector. The Health Minister's announced $20 million dollars to hire 50 senior doctors, and $10 million for senior specialist nurses and allied health professionals. The Nurses Organisation says the funding is only a 0.2% increase in investment for nurses. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Executive Director Sarah Dalton told Mike Hosking she doesn't want to rain on the parade, but she doesn't think it achieves anything. She says it's disappointing, given the report released last year that states New Zealand is short by 1,700 doctors and GPs. Dalton says nothing that has happened since has referred to that data or tried to address it in any concrete or tangible way. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Patients referred for hospital treatment aren't even making it onto waiting lists. RNZ's obtained part of a letter to a GP from an orthopaedic clinic that confirms some referrals are being knocked back. It says the decision's forced on them by a lack of resources to let them see all referred patients within the limits of Ministry of Health waiting time targets. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists executive director Sarah Dalton says she thinks they're trying to inject some realism into the situation. "I think the point they're making is that if they put someone on a waiting list like that at this time, that person is never going to make their way up." Health New Zealand is expecting its financial deficit for the past financial year to be near a billion dollars. The agency's released its report for the June quarter. Earlier in quarter three, a $299 million surplus was forecast - but the preliminary financial result for the year to the end of June is a $934 million deficit. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Executive Director Sarah Dalton told Ryan Bridge services and departments are going to be dealing with significant cuts. She says some of it will impact staffing levels, and some the ability to implement digital solutions that'll make staff and systems more efficient. Have you been caught out by a tax bill from Inland Revenue? Many Kiwis on salaries at the end of this financial year have tax to pay, with some owing thousands of dollars. Employees on parental leave seem to be the hardest hit, with one teacher saying she owes IRD two thousand three hundred dollars, despite being on maternity leave. As Matthew Hutching reports, in the midst of a cost of living crisis it's a extra expense most can ill-afford.
A North Shore Hospital is opening - without the staff or money to care for extra surgery patients. The two-storey Tōtara Haumaru has eight surgical theatres, an endoscopy suite and 150 beds. But Health New Zealand delayed its opening in April, saying it hadn't determined an operating budget, nor staff to run it. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Chief Executive, Sarah Dalton, says problems won't ease anytime soon. "They'll say it's not a freeze, but it's as close as you can get without seeing ice. So recruitment has really slowed down and money is very tight." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
There's hopes today's Budget will go some way to addressing staff shortages in the health sector. The Budget's release comes amid strike action from both junior doctors and blood workers. Sarah Dalton from the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists told Mike Hosking that it'll take an extra $1.8 billion just to keep the health system ticking over as it is. She said that they would love to see funding tagged specifically to staffing increases, to ensure it goes where it needs to. Dalton told Hosking that there's plenty of services who need more staff, and the employer agrees, but they're not willing or able to do anything about it. On this week's episode of the RealTrending podcast, we welcome Michael Repka, the CEO and managing broker of DeLeon Realty, a Palo Alto-based brokerage with a unique business model of salaried agents. In this conversation, Mike and Tracey talk about DeLeon's brokerage model and its place in the market post-NAR commission lawsuit settlement, as well as scalability and sustainability of the salaried agent model. They also talk about what the future holds for buyer's agents and what agents need to do to demonstrate their value to consumers. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: DeLeon Realty is structured differently from traditional brokerages, with all agents being salaried and the commission going to the buyer's side. Value-added services, such as providing legal and contractor support, can set a brokerage apart and offer additional value to clients. The recent NAR settlement may lead to the emergence of new business models and services. Buyer's agents may need to demonstrate their value and offer unique services to justify their commission. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman almost stuck to her promise of keeping the interim Budget free of any “spectacular announcement”. But, at the same time, she tried to strike a fine balance between welfare and fiscal prudence. The budget speech was peppered with a number of people-friendly announcements, like the housing scheme for the middle class. And it also promised to bring down the fiscal deficit to 5.1% of GDP in FY25. So is this Budget more than interim? Find out in the first episode of today's special show on interim Budget. This is what experts have to say about the interim Budget. Now let us see what Business Standard's own crack team thinks. They offer us sector-wise analysis of this Budget statement. Let us see if it ticks all the right buttons. The government's aggressive fiscal targets set bond markets on fire. Yields on 10-year government securities fell as much as 10 basis points after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced lower-than-expected fiscal deficit and borrowing numbers. So, will the government's fiscal gliding path provide the necessary balm to bond, and in turn equity markets? Salaried class, meanwhile, was a bit disappointed as the FM kept the rates unchanged. But they can now pin their hopes to the full Budget which will be tabled in July. And at about 58 minutes, it was perhaps the shortest budget speech by Nirmala Sitharaman. But it certainly carried a punch. Listen to this episode of the podcast for a few important numbers which got newsmakers attention and more.

There's a raft of reasons behind senior doctors and dentists walking off the job today. Members of the Association of Salaried Medical Specialists will strike for two hours from midday after rejecting the latest offer from Te Whatu Ora. Former Executive Director Ian Powell told Mike Hosking that there are staffing shortages, stress, and burnout, along with a pay freeze and seeing the value of their incomes decline. He says they feel like they've been taken for granted for too long, working in insufferable conditions with no pipeline ahead to get out of it, and something has snapped. Staffing issues at Palmerston North Hospital's emergency department are reaching extremes. Earlier this month, the department's clinical lead wrote to Te Whatu Ora to say they're at risk of not being able to provide an emergency medicine service. Association of Salaried Medical Specialists Executive Director Sarah Dalton told Mike Hosking that it's an issue still affecting many hospitals, and means patients aren't through in a timely way. She says it's fundamentally a resourcing issue, and the system is breaking after decades of negligence. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Doctors Sara and Lisa talk to talk to Dr Mary Cheshire who is the GP lead on the NHS England Fellowships for Greater Manchester GPs. As she explains, this is a fairly informal fellowship done over 2 years offering different types of courses and support that essentially consists of a paid CPD session a week and a range of CPD events to facilitate this. The course runs a qualification in coaching people can sign up for and are offered Mentors. Completing a quality improvement project is encouraged, whether that is small or large and there are opportunities for support for this along the way. At the moment this is available for newly qualified GPs and those up to 2 years after CCT who are in Salaried or Partnership posts. There are other types of Fellowships - we mention the Health Education England GP Fellowships and GP Nurses Fellowships briefly, see details below. The trucks will be among 50,000 Next Generation Delivery Vehicles from Wisconsin-based Oshkosh Corp. - Maloney referred to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday. The congressional watchdog said the postal service used a gas price that is almost $2 per gallon less than the current national average price of gas. - The Postal Service is moving forward over objections of the Biden administration with its $6 billion plan to purchase as many as 165,000 mail trucks over the next 10 years, with up to 90% of those running on gasoline instead of more climate-friendly batteries.
