This episode tackles a tricky and often painful topic—one that leaves many couples feeling stuck: how to navigate attraction after betrayal. When trust has been shattered by infidelity, even something as seemingly harmless as noticing an attractive person can feel threatening. In this conversation, Jake Porter and Karla Summey unpack the difference between noticing and objectifying, examine the influence of cultural messages around beauty and desire, and offer guidance on how transparency, communication, and self-compassion can help couples move forward. For anyone who has felt confused, triggered, or unsure how to engage these moments without causing more harm, this episode offers clarity, validation, and a path toward healing.Karla Summey is a certified coach who specializes in supporting individuals and couples in the aftermath of sexual betrayal. With a background in nursing and certifications through the International Coaching Federation (ICF), APSATS, and as a Certified Disclosure Guide Coach, she brings both clinical insight and relational wisdom to her work. Karla is especially passionate about fostering shared reality and guiding couples through the Early Recovery Couples Empathy Model (ERCEM) and the Couple-Centered Recovery model. Her compassionate, honest, and partner-sensitive approach helps couples rebuild safety and trust in the face of deep relational wounds.APSATS.orgAPSATS.org/podcastdrjakeporter.com/breakingbarrierskarlasummey.com/This podcast is intended for educational and entertainment purposes only. This week, a special road trip episode. For the first time, Ozark Highlands Radio visits the legendary Walnut Valley Festival, a four day acoustic music marathon and arts & crafts fair held every September in Winfield, Kansas. Host Dave Smith and OHR producer Jeff Glover sample the menagerie of musical acts we recorded at this incredible event. The annual Walnut Valley Festival, now in it's 53rd season, is one of the oldest and most respected acoustic music festivals in the world. Held at the Winfield, Kansas fairgrounds, more than 30 musical acts will perform on four separate stages, presenting over 200 hours of live music. Also, there is a dedicated contest stage where contestants vie for national and international championships in Finger Style Guitar, Flat Pick Guitar, Bluegrass Banjo, Old Time Fiddle, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Hammered Dulcimer, and Autoharp. There is a juried arts and crafts fair, exhibits by renowned instrument makers and music shops, family activities, a bevy of food vendors, a farmer's market and even a pub! An unusual aspect of Walnut Valley is its campground tradition. Campsites are not reserved and campers line up to claim a choice campsite during the "Land Rush.” Walnut Valley Festival goers often bring their own musical instruments to participate in the sometimes all night campground jam sessions. Bands like Old Sound, that began as "Jam Bands" in the campgrounds, have even been invited to perform at the festival. Ozark Highlands Radio was invited to the 52nd annual Walnut Valley Festival. It was an unforgettable experience and a total success for us, having been able to record fifteen musical acts including: Nathan McEuen; Sally & the Hurts; RUNA; Special Consensus; Chris Jones & the Night Drivers; John McCutcheon; The Rick Faris Band;; Socks in the Frying Pan; Pixie & the Partygrass Boys; A.J. Lee & Blue Summit; Dave Stamey; Old Sound; Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley; Shane Hennessy; and Bing Futch. We also managed to capture the 2024 Championship Finger Style Guitarists performance and the National Mountain Dulcimer Championship.

Let's be honest—rejection hurts. Whether it's the guy who ghosts you, the invite that never comes, or watching someone else get the promotion you prayed for… it stings. But here's the real truth: the most painful rejection isn't when they say no—it's when you reject yourself. In this episode, I'm showing you how self-rejection sneaks in, how it's holding you back, and what to do to stop it. You'll learn how to stop making rejection mean something's wrong with you—and how to start having your own back, no matter what. Because when you accept you, love you, and believe in you? Rejection loses its sting.

In Trump's tax bill, 60% of cuts go to the top 20% (income: $217K+). More than a third to top 5% ($460K+) Households earning less than $51K will see income drop next year. Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages worldwide, but when it comes to energy, there's a lot of confusion about what actually helps and what might be working against you. In Episode 195 of the Real World Nutrition Podcast, Shelley Rael, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, breaks down the difference between coffee, caffeine, and energy, and what you should really know about each. Shelley discusses the pros and cons of caffeine, how much is too much, and why “energy” drinks may not provide the kind of energy you actually need. Shelley explains how caffeine works as a central nervous system stimulant and clears up the difference between stimulant energy and the actual energy your body uses (hint: that comes from food, not caffeine). You'll also learn about caffeine tolerance, side effects of overuse, and when energy drinks can become dangerous. Whether you love your morning brew or reach for an afternoon energy boost, this episode will help you use caffeine wisely to support your health, not drain it. This week, we continue our series dealing with our emotional hurts in a Biblical manner. In this episode, we begin a 4-part discussion on the VERY DIFFICULT topic of sexual abuse.
“Telling Him I Love Him Hurts Him” — Gilgo Killer's Wife, Asa Ellerup's Most Bizarre Statement Yet In this final segment, Tony Brueski and retired FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke turn their focus toward the most emotionally revealing clips from the Peacock documentary, featuring Asa Ellerup's reaction to her husband Rex Heuermann's arrest—and her increasingly surreal statements in the aftermath. Asa says she doesn't want to tell Rex she loves him… because it would hurt him. She defends him against allegations with unwavering loyalty, declaring “he's a family man,” and insists that he never kept anything from her—even while describing rooms in the house she was never allowed to enter. Robin Dreeke walks us through the psychological mechanisms at play: projection, cognitive dissonance, and denial as a survival strategy. He explains why Asa isn't just refusing to believe the evidence—she's incapable of it. To accept it would be to unravel her entire life, her marriage, and the identity she's built around being the wife of a good man. Dreeke also analyzes Asa's body language, defensive responses, and deeply embedded belief system. He argues that Asa's lack of curiosity—and Rex's understanding of that trait—created a “perfect storm” for secrecy and long-term concealment. We also explore the disturbing reality that forensic evidence linked hair from Asa and her daughter to some of the victims. How does Asa rationalize this? She doesn't. She simply... doesn't ask. As the segment closes, we also address the broader forensic and behavioral implications: Was this family environment intentionally manipulated? And what mistakes may have occurred because no one was asking the hard questions? This isn't just about one woman's denial—it's about the terrifying ease with which predators can operate when no one dares to ask why. Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Work hurt is real, and ministry leaders aren't exempt. Whether it's being let go, navigating toxic work environments, or simply enduring deep disappointments, our vocational pain can shape us in ways we never expected—and often never wanted. In this episode, author of When Work Hurts, shares her own journey through work hurt, explores the different ways leaders experience vocational pain, and offers practical and spiritual resources for healing and resilience. THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Meryl Herr shares her personal story of “work hurt” and how it led her to address the topic in her work and writing. Meryl Herr describes feeling disillusioned early in her career when her expectations for work did not align with reality, leading to discouragement and even unexpected job loss. Work hurt occurs when people sustain physical or psychological injuries in their workplace. Meryl Herr categorizes work hurt as stemming from toxic systems, unhealthy cultures, issues of job fit, and personal mistakes. Work hurt can be experienced as disappointment, disillusionment, or devastation, each having different causes and emotional impacts. Meryl Herr notes that people's tolerance for disappointment, disillusionment, and devastation is highly individual. Significant numbers of workers experience work hurt, including burnout, discrimination, and disengagement, as reflected in recent research and statistics. Discrimination and harassment at work affect certain demographic groups more acutely, highlighting systemic injustice and inequity. Meryl Herr stresses the need for individuals to acknowledge and process their work-related pain, rather than internalizing it or transmitting it to others. If people do not transform their work pain, they risk transmitting it as cynicism, projection, or stress in personal and family relationships. Community support, honest conversation, prayer—especially lament—and listening to God are central strategies for healing from work hurt. Meryl Herr encourages practices of discerning God's presence and call, likening vocational discernment to “wayfinding” that requires attention to context, one's gifts, and God's invitation. Being called to a vocation or job does not mean one is exempt from pain or suffering; Meryl Herr and Markus Watson both connect this to biblical examples of hardship in the midst of calling. Pastors play an important role by understanding and addressing the work hurt in their congregations and by providing practical, emotional, and spiritual support. Meryl Herr recommends cultivating “everyday faithfulness,” showing up and doing the daily work set before us as a foundational way to keep moving forward through disruption, loss, and fear.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Meryl Herr:Website – www.merylherr.comDePree Center for LeadershipBooks mentioned:When Work Hurts, by Meryl HerrFalling Upward, by Ruchard RohrRelated episodes:114. Welcome to Parenting Kids and Dogs 101, a limited series podcast for parents who live with kids and dogs, or plan to. I'm your host, Michelle Stern, the founder of Pooch Parenting. I'm not just a certified professional dog trainer and former teacher, I'm a mom too. In each episode of this series, I hope you'll feel like I'm chatting with you, one parent to another, about life with kids and dogs, answering common questions my clients ask me, and giving you simple solutions to make your life easier and safer.I hope you'll subscribe and join me for the whole series, and don't forget to grab the accompanying workbook at https://poochparenting.net/podcastworkbook/Why Your Child Might Accidentally Hurt or Provoke your DogIt's important for parents to understand normal behaviors in kids that accompany different developmental stages. Kids are curious and want to explore "what happens if"We need to react calmly and move our child away.Next, we need to explain why we do or don't do certain things, and then use management to prevent dangerous or unkind interactions in the futureNatural consequences could include having less access to the dogIt's also important to identify if your child is afraid of your dog or uncomfortable around them and is asking for more safe space (by kicking at or swatting at the dog) How can I teach my children to respect and interact safely with our dog?Model the behavior you want your kids to demonstrateMost dogs don't like to be hugged - so don't hug your dog in front of your children. Even if YOUR dog likes to be hugged, your children will treat all dogs the way they treat yours.Eye contact is threatening to most dogs, so don't kiss your dog on the nose in front of your kids - this is how a lot of bites to kids happen. Again - even if your dog is okay with this, it puts your child's vulnerable face too close to the teeth of other dogs.Set some ground rules such as never bothering a dog when they are eating, chewing a bone or sleepingUse safe zones for both your kids and dogs, where they know that they will not be approachedInvite dogs to you for petting instead of approaching themNotice dog body language and talk about it often - point out if your dog is showing signs of stress so your kids can learn to recognize themThank you for listening! It's tempting to tell a lie—especially when it makes life easier, avoids conflict, or earns approval. But what happens when we allow small lies to become habits in our families? In this episode of Family Vision, Rob and Amy Rienow continue their series on the Ten Commandments with a deeper look at the ninth commandment: “You shall not bear false witness.” They share personal stories of "white lies," explore how environments normalize deceit, and offer biblical encouragement for parenting kids who lie. From fake IDs to fudging a child's age for a discount, this conversation uncovers how truth-telling is foundational to trust and love in the home. What You'll Learn in This Episode: - Why lying is often motivated by fear, shame, or the desire for approval - How “small” lies can create lasting damage in relationships - Parenting strategies to lovingly confront dishonesty without shame - Why full confession—not partial—is the only way to rebuild trust - How to keep communication open and be a “safe place” for truth Featured Resources: Visionary Family Events — Learn more: https://visionaryfam.com/events Visionary Family Community — Connect with families around the world committed to passing faith to the next generation. At Hope Bridge, two of our biggest priorities are supporting single moms and engaging the local church. But bringing those two things together isn't always simple. In this episode, we're discussing a sensitive but important topic: church hurt—specifically, how it affects single moms. This conversation is not meant to overgeneralize or place blame. We are incredibly grateful for the many churches we partner with that do amazing work to support families. At the same time, we also want to honor the stories of single moms who have felt excluded from ministries, overlooked for leadership, or disconnected from small groups. Sometimes, the hurt comes through unsolicited advice that, while well-intended, causes pain. Other times, it's not about what's said—but what isn't. The absence of acknowledgment or representation can leave single moms feeling invisible.God created us for community. Even when that community has caused hurt, the need for connection remains. We talk about the importance of continuing to seek out healthy church spaces, even after past wounds. Sometimes, God meets us most powerfully outside of a traditional church setting—but we have to be seeking Him. Church is meant to be a place of restoration, hope, and belonging. In this conversation, we explore how we can help the Church reflect that vision more fully—especially for single moms.Episode Highlights: Single Moms Church Hurt Church Community How to pursue healing Single Moms Program at Hope Bridge Find More on Hope Bridge:Check out our Single Moms Program July Empower U Registration Schedule Coffee with Mel!Link for Friendly Faces/Spiritual DevelopmentSingle Mom Connection Form Visit Our Website Follow us on InstagramFollow us on Facebook Foster Our Community Instagram

This message is from our "Ecclesiastes" series. In the book of Ecclesiastes, Solomon sets out to discover if “life under the sun” is truly worth living. He goes on a journey throughout the book and finds himself originally declaring that everything under the sun is meaningless. Solomon is overwhelmed with the truth that death is coming for every person, and that nothing worked for, earned, or pursued seems to have any lasting value. It's not until Solomon starts focusing on things “beyond the sun” that he recognizes life's true meaning and purpose. He ultimately discovers that the whole purpose of man is to enjoy life and all its blessings, to live by faith, and to prepare for eternity by fearing God and keeping his commandments. Crosspoint City is one church in multiple locations and we exist to relentlessly pursue those far from God to help them know and follow Jesus. There are few things more painful than hearing God say no. Especially when we’re pleading—not for riches or success—but for healing. For hope. For our child. We fast. We pray. We believe. We speak life over the situation. And still, the miracle doesn’t come… at least not the one we hoped for. In this special Best Of archive episode from two years ago, we revisit a deeply moving conversation that is just as relevant today as the day it aired. This story is evergreen, because the struggle to understand God’s will in seasons of sorrow is one we all face—especially as parents. My guest, Andy Howard, knows that struggle intimately. When his firstborn daughter, Payton, received a devastating diagnosis at Dallas Children’s Hospital, Andy’s world collapsed. The weight of that moment spiraled into a four-year battle with depression. But God didn’t leave him there. In this first installment of our two-part conversation, Andy shares how God met him in the most unexpected and intimate ways in his darkest valley. You’ll hear: How Andy and his wife navigated a life-altering diagnosis The gut-wrenching process of accepting an answer from God that wasn’t what they prayed for The tender message God spoke to Andy in the midst of the heartbreak Why suffering doesn’t mean God has abandoned us—and how beauty can truly rise from brokenness Next week, we’ll hear Part 2, where Andy shares the redemptive turn in his story, how Payton is doing today, and how we as the Church can come alongside special needs families with compassion and strength. This episode will speak to the places in your heart that still carry questions. It’s a sacred story you don’t want to miss. Let’s Stay Connected! To see video clips from this conversation, as well as powerful quotes and encouragement for your parenting journey, connect with me on Instagram and Facebook. For updates on each new podcast episode and free resources like: Scripture songs Bible verses to pray over prodigal children A topical index of Scriptures for prayer ...be sure to subscribe to my website. A passionate advocate for mental health awareness, Andy has personally walked through the valley of depression—at one point tipping the scales at 345 lbs. as he tried to cope with family trauma through food. But God had more in store. Together with his wife Tiffany, Andy has lost over 350 lbs. combined and co-founded a transformational health coaching business called Taking Back My Life, helping thousands reclaim physical and emotional wellness. Andy is the host of the When Words Don’t Come Easy podcast and author of a book by the same name. In this episode, I speak with Matt about his evolution as a therapist, researcher, and founder of New Harbinger Publications. Originally trained in Gestalt therapy, Matt transitioned to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) after discovering its effectiveness in addressing his own anxiety—and its ability to offer more structured tools for change. From there, his work expanded into third-wave CBTs like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), especially as he sought to support clients experiencing complex emotional challenges, trauma, and persistent distress that weren't always responsive to traditional CBT protocols. We discuss the development of a transdiagnostic and precision-based approach to therapy, centered on identifying specific mechanisms such as emotional and cognitive avoidance. Matt explains how treatment can be tailored using interventions like emotion exposure, mindfulness, and cognitive diffusion to address each client's unique coping profile—an approach supported by his work on the Comprehensive Coping Inventory. Matt also talks about the founding and mission of New Harbinger Publications, which pioneered the self-help workbook format grounded in evidence-based therapies. He shares insight into their newest tool, Therapy Assist, a digital resource for therapists to assign skills-based, diagnostic-specific homework. We delve into his clinic's current research on trauma treatment, including the effectiveness of combining ACT with EMDR and written exposure therapy. We also explore how trauma manifests physiologically and emotionally, and why traditional approaches often fall short when addressing complex PTSD, dissociation, or early attachment trauma. Matt reflects on integrating coping skills into ACT—an often debated topic—and describes his efforts to bridge therapeutic models like Schema Therapy and ACT. We explore how these integrations can support trauma clients in choosing value-based responses over automatic, schema-driven reactions. Throughout the conversation, we reflect on the growing movement toward precision therapy—individualized, mechanism-targeted, and empirically grounded. Dr. McKay's work continues to shape how therapists understand suffering and resilience, and how they can empower clients with the tools to navigate both. Dr. Matthew McKay is a clinical psychologist, professor at the Wright Institute, founder of New Harbinger Publications, and author of research and over 40 books on CBT, ACT, trauma, and emotional healing, including Mind and Emotions, The Relaxation and Stress Reduction Workbook, and Emotion Efficacy Therapy. He cofounded the Haight Ashbury Psychological Services agency in 1979 and served as its Clinical Director for 25 years and is currently the co-director of the Bay Area Trauma Recovery Clinical Services (BATRCS). Matt's interests extend to writing poetry, fiction, and music, and he has a published novel and two books of poetry.
