Ms. Thille’s focus of research and development is in applying results from the learning sciences to the design, implementation and evaluation of open web-based learning environments. Candace currently serves as a redesign scholar for the National Center for Academic Transformation; as a Fellow of International Society for Design and Development in Education; and on the Global Executive Advisory board for Hewlett Packard’s Catalyst Initiative. She recently served on a working group at the U.S. Department of Education to write the National Education Technology Plan for the Obama Administration and currently serves on a working group for the U.S. Department of Education to evaluate of the effectiveness of online courses for secondary students. According to Candace, “Using intelligent tutoring systems, virtual laboratories, simulations, and frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback, The Open Learning Initiative at Carnegie Mellon builds learning environments that support instruction. Or, more precisely, to support the kind of dynamic, flexible, and responsive instruction that fosters learning. As students work through the OLI courses, we use technology to collect real-time interaction level data of all student use. We use this data to create four positive feedback loops: feedback to students, feedback to instructors, feedback to course designers, and feedback to learning science researchers.”
Weimin Li’s teaching and research are centered on applying state of the art geo-spatial technologies in investigating the interplay between natural and human systems in urban context and thus enriching the knowledge base of landscape design and environmental planning. Her current research emphasizes on the relationship between environmental amenities, e.g., urban green settings, and different dimensions of quality of life, e.g., safety (crime), health, and environmental justice, as well as how geospatial technologies can play critical role in such investigations.
Dr. Starkey has authored an introductory organic synthesis textbook, developed online laboratory tutorials, Blackboard online prelab quizzes, and created o-chem lessons for Educator.com. She is also Cal Poly Pomona's Calibrated Peer Review (CPR) administrator and serves on the Chemistry Editorial Board of MERLOT. Her research interests lie in the area of Chemical Education, but she focuses on developing and assessing online learning tools, and developing new lab experiments in the area of Synthetic Organic Chemistry.
George Proctor teaches design, urban design and design methods, utilizing the tools of video game design with both analog and digital techniques; he oversees the department digital curriculum. Professor Proctor has chaired the Association of Computer Aided Design in Architecture Conference, and was on the founding editorial board of the International Journal of Architectural Computing. He maintains his own practice and has served on his local Planning, Design Review and City Blue Ribbon Commissions. He recently designed and constructed his own home. Juintow Lin teaches design and sustainability courses. She created the website toolsfor sustainability.com, an online resource for digital design tools focusing on sustainability. She served as a Research Fellow at MIT and co-edited Sustainable Urban Housing in China: Principles and Case Studies for Low-Energy Design (Springer, 2006). She is LEED accredited and is a principal in FoxLin, a multidisciplinary design firm; their design projects have an emphasis in sustainability and interactivity and have been awarded and published in the US and Asia.
