Send us a textFriends of EddieThe second 1x1 feature rounding out Season 14 and, chosen by Jack, the film is THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE (1973). Directed by Peter Yates, whose career TGTPTU is unlikely to cover in a future 4x4 despite having Krull and Bullitt in his credits, TFOEC is an adaptation of George V. Higgins' inaugural novel and notable as a unromanticized depiction of crime in artistic response to The Godfather, the Puzo book and Coppola film each preceding, respectively, the book and movie versions of TFOEC by one year.  Higgins would take issue with the book as his debut novel. The former deputy assistant attorney general claimed to have written and burned 14 novels over 17 years prior to TFOEC and would go on to author over 30 books, both fiction and nonfiction before his fatal heart attack in 1999, but none with the impact of his first. As seasonal guest host Jack points out, nearly all the dialogue in the film is as it is on the page, and the pages are dripping with dialogue that creates the setting and action for this ironic story of “friends” who double-cross and live less than glamorous lives as Irish mobsters and criminals in Boston.  Yates populates the film with faces, faces that we don't see much anymore, distinct faces and every one telling a story, from the titular Coyle plated by Robert Mitchum who earlier in this life reluctantly left the assembly line to be an actor to actor Alex Rocco who starred as Moe Greene in The Godfather and helped Mitchum meet some of his old criminal friends whom Rocco had to leave behind after he (the actor Alex Rocco) was held for questioning in relation to the murder that kicked off the Boston Irish Gang War of the 1960s to James Tolkan before he'd lost his hair a decade prior to portraying Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future movies and Detective Hugh Lubic in the Cannon Films classic Masters of the Universe.  For this episode, everyone did research: Jack and Thomas pair off for book report; Ryan covers the career of Mitchum; and Ken covers Yates and laments how now Hollywood lacks hacks as well as provides a new shaggy dog with The Pals of Charlie Brown. Make sure to wipe your prints clean on this one before listening with a friend. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Bluesky: @goodpodugly.bsky.socialYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!): Podcast: goodpoduglyKen: Ken KoralRyan: Ryan Tobias

In this illuminating episode of the #SiblingsToo podcast, hosted by Nancy Morris, Anais Vanvliet returns to discuss her groundbreaking research on the experiences of non-abused, non-abuser siblings within families affected by child sexual abuse. Anais shares her passion for highlighting the often-overlooked impacts on these siblings, driven by her personal and professional commitment to the subject matter. Nancy and Anais delve into the critical need for more focused research and policy changes to address the gaps in support systems.   Diving deeper, Anais outlines her research's core questions, which explore both the experiences of these siblings and the current service provisions—or lack thereof—for them in Canada, particularly in Quebec and New Brunswick. She highlights the unique challenges and emotional impacts these siblings face, including feelings of isolation and jealousy, and the importance of trauma-informed approaches when engaging with them. Anais also touches on the broader conversation around sibling relationships in the context of family violence, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support systems and policy advocacy.   About our guest, Anais Vanvliet: Anais Vanvliet is a PhD candidate in the School of Social Work at McGill University, focusing on the experiences and support needs of siblings in households where child sexual abuse (CSA) has occurred. Anais brings a unique perspective to her research with her lived experience as a sibling of survivors and her professional background as a trained social worker in sexual violence. Her work aims to enhance awareness, policy, and support systems for siblings affected by family violence in Canada.     Key Takeaways:   *   The sibling dynamic in CSA-affected households is under-researched, leading to insufficient support for non-abused, non-abuser siblings. *   Anais aims to fill this research gap by focusing on these siblings' experiences and potential support needs. *   The impacts on these siblings can mirror those of the survivors, with additional unique challenges like feelings of exclusion. *   Current service provisions often overlook these siblings, highlighting a need for advocacy and policy changes. *   Anais's research seeks to provide data-driven insights to improve awareness and service provision for siblings affected by CSA and family violence.   Notable Quotes:   1.  "All siblings in the household can be deeply impacted by sibling sexual abuse or child sexual abuse generally, even if they're not directly involved." 2.  "There's really no research or very, very, very little on the experiences of siblings surrounding child sexual abuse in a family." 3.  "My work hopefully will help to kind of fill those gaps." 4.  "If someone is missing in the conversation, the conversation is missing." 5.  "The timing is right to do this work because in Canada, we are slowly starting to pay closer attention to siblings in the context of family violence."   Resources:   *   Contact Anais Vanvliet via email anais.cadieuxvanvliet@mcgill.ca for participants interested in her research. *   Mention of the scoping review by Peter Yates and Amy Adams on sibling sexual abuse -https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0145213424004666   Explore the full episode to gain an in-depth understanding of the dynamics of sibling relationships in CSA-affected households and to learn more about the vital research being conducted by Anais Vanvliet. Episode Summary: In this episode of the #SiblingsToo Podcast, host Nancy Morris talks with Dr. Peter Yates and Amy Adams about their scoping review on sibling sexual abuse (SSA), a critical step in consolidating fragmented research on this under-explored issue. By mapping the current knowledge base, their work identifies gaps in research, clarifies definitions, and lays the groundwork for improved understanding and future studies, making it an invaluable resource for addressing SSA more effectively.   Dr. Yates and Amy Adams discuss the complexities of defining SSA, revealing 27 different definitions in the literature and stressing the importance of clear, consistent language to avoid stigma and misinterpretation. They also examine prevalence rates, with adult disclosures ranging from 1.6% to 7%, highlighting the urgent need for increased societal awareness and targeted research. The conversation underscores the limitations of existing studies and calls for more rigorous approaches to fully understand SSA's onset, patterns, and long-term impacts.   About the Guest(s): Dr. Peter Yates: Dr. Peter Yates is a lecturer in social work at Glasgow Caledonian University in Scotland. With a background in working in a specialist service assisting children and young people exhibiting harmful sexual behavior, Dr. Yates has dedicated his research to studying sibling sexual abuse, primarily focusing on cases involving boys abusing their siblings. Amy Adams: Amy Adams is a doctoral researcher at the University of Birmingham, centered on family and sibling dynamics. Her current research delves into the relationships between siblings where one child has caused harm and another has been harmed, providing insight into the complex dynamics within such families.   Key Takeaways: Definition Complexity: The myriad definitions of sibling sexual abuse contribute to challenges in research and interventions, highlighting the need for a universal understanding to improve clarity and response. Prevalence Insights: Existing research reveals significant rates of SSA disclosure in adulthood, underscoring the need for societal acknowledgment and systemic approaches to dealing with such cases. Family Dynamics: The conversation delves into the factors correlating with SSA, emphasizing that it transcends socio-economic boundaries and often correlates with wider family disruptions. Need for Comprehensive Research: The episode stresses the importance of conducting more in-depth studies, including longitudinal research to establish causal pathways and effective interventions. Education and Intervention: Dr. Yates and Adams advocate for educational efforts starting early in childhood to prevent SSA, aiming for holistic family interventions tailored to support every family member affected by SSA.   Notable Quotes: "Because it's such a difficult concept to pin down… what we don't want to be doing is stigmatizing children and children's sexual behaviors unnecessarily." - Dr. Peter Yates "In terms of disclosure, most disclosures come in adulthood, not from children at the time of the incident." - Amy Adams "The idea that some people can touch children's bodies… can include and name specifically brothers and sisters." - Dr. Peter Yates "Sibling sexual abuse can take place in any families from across the socio-economic spectrum." - Dr. Peter Yates "We need more robust and stronger methodologies to make causal or pathway links." - Amy Adams   Resources:   Glasgow Caledonian University University of Birmingham SiblingsToo Podcast: Website AIM Project (Manchester)     Chapters:     0:00 Sibling Sexual Abuse: Understanding, Disclosure, and Stigma 2:55 Exploring Research Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Studies 9:24 Challenges in Defining Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Implications 18:00 Defining Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Research Implications 22:33 Reevaluating Sibling Sexual Abuse and Its Traumatic Impact 25:28 Challenges in Managing Sibling Relationships After Harm 27:30 Understanding Sibling Sexual Abuse and Societal Challenges 31:11 Prevalence and Research on Sibling Sexual Abuse 33:41 Understanding the Impact of Sibling Sexual Abuse 39:22 Understanding Sibling Sexual Abuse Across Diverse Family Dynamics 45:09 Addressing Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Research and Prevention 51:04 Challenges in Disclosing Sibling Sexual Abuse Within Families 56:39 Challenges of Disclosure in Adulthood for Childhood Trauma Survivors 58:52 Risks and Rewards of Sharing Personal Struggles 1:00:15 Understanding Non-Verbal Disclosures of Child Sexual Abuse 1:02:26 Early Education and Prevention of Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:05:45 The Challenge of Establishing Clear and Consistent Definitions 1:07:29 Defining and Understanding Sibling Sexual Behaviors and Abuses 1:11:27 Global Research Gaps in Sibling Sexual Abuse Studies 1:16:29 Exploring Whole Family Interventions for Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:21:28 Family Education as a Tool for Abuse Prevention 1:24:39 Addressing Sibling Sexual Abuse Through Broader Societal Responsibility 1:27:11 Increasing Research and Public Discourse on Sibling Sexual Abuse 1:34:57 Scoping Review on Sibling Sexual Abuse: Methodology and Future Directions 1:38:29 Sharing Open Access Research on the SiblingsToo Podcast

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we talk about the movie star. The person who if you looked up “movie star” in the dictionary there would be a picture of him. Robert Redford!  Today we talk the esteemed career of the quintessential movie star. Our B-Sides include: The Hot Rock, The Great Waldo Pepper, Havana, and The Last Castle. Our guest today is Blake Howard, podcast producer, host, and really good guy. Check out One Heat Minute Productions for everything new and relevant in Blake's world.  We discuss a million things, from why The Hot Rock is so hard to find, to the airplane stunts in The Great Waldo Pepper, to why Havana doesn't work. There's an investigation into the politics of The Last Castle, a brief celebration of Lena Olin, and a quick rave for Jordan Harper's searing short story “My Savage Year.” Additional topics include that upcoming City of Hope release, why Peter Yates is “slow vibes central,” why great screenwriter William Goldman knew why The Great Waldo Pepper underwhelmed at the box office (from his book Adventures in the Screen Trade), and how exactly the A-Side The Natural literally looks like nostalgia. Finally, we mention why Raul Julia didn't take a credit on Havana, we reference that superb Scott Frank New Yorker profile, proclaim ourselves defenders of Hollywood Homicide, and discuss the end of Redford's career. What is expressionism? A school? A movement? A philosophy? At the end of this episode, Phil and JF agree that it is, above all, a sensibility, one that surfaces periodically in history, punctuating it with occasional bursts of frenetic colour and eruptions of light and shadow. Whenever it appears, expressionism challenges our tendency to divide the world up into neat quadrants: mind and matter, subject and object lose their legitimacy as they start to bleed into one another. Prior to recording, your hosts agreed to focus on two pieces of writing: Victoria Nelson's The Secret Life of Puppets and a recent Internet post on eighties and nineties American films entitled "Neo-Expressionism: The Forgotten Studio Style." Though focused on a number of films, the conversation includes forays into the world of the visual arts, literature, and music. Support us on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/weirdstudies). Peter Yates was quietly one of the most interesting film directors of his time. His seminal 1967 British train-robbery film 'Robbery' got him noticed for the job directing Steve McQueen in 1968's 'Bullitt'.  In that film, Yates turned in a car chase frequently mentioned as second only to the iconic one filmed by Billy Friedkin in 'The French Connection'. By 1973,  Yates was in Hollywood, working under a three-picture deal with Peter Bart and Robert Evans at Paramount.  Two of those didn't work out. The third turned out to be 'The Friends of Eddie Coyle', which is one of the very best 70's crime films, one of the very best Boston-set films ever made, and features Robert Mitchum's very best performance amid a wonderfully constructed neo-noir shot entirely on location in a series of blue-collar and working class Boston spots. In this episode, I talk about 'Robbery', 'Bullitt' and 'The French Connection' and how they compare and contrast to 'The Friends of Eddie Coyle', an underappreciated little masterpiece of the sort Peter Yates specialized in throughout his career.

The Top 100 Project

Bullitt is famous for its car chase (an action scene that many movies have tried---and usually failed---to equal or surpass), but this police thriller has got so much more going for it than just that. As for this being called an action film, well, it's actually more of a murder mystery. Steve McQueen is his trademark Mister Cool, but his romance with Jacqueline Bissett also gives him humanity. It's not like the beautiful actress gets to do much more than that though. Bullitt's biggest problem, however, is that there are some confusing plot turns that don't always make sense. All those topics are discussed in Ryan's solo show that focuses on one bad weekend in the heart of San Francisco.
