One after another, products "created in China" have evolved into global fashion trends. The record-breaking auction of Labubu for over 1 million yuan in Beijing on Tuesday has thrust Pop Mart, a "blind box" toy company, into the spotlight. In some business analysts' eyes, the evolution of Pop Mart is essentially a story of transitioning from a "product-centric" to an "ecosystem-centric" mindset. While other toy manufacturers are still competing on production efficiency, it has already been constructing a complete ecosystem loop covering IP incubation, content production, retail channels, and user communities. The quirky Labubu, along with the debut of DeepSeek, a low-cost, open-source large language model, and the animated blockbuster film Ne Zha 2, have paved the way for exploring new cultural communication channels internationally. The digitalization of industries and the industrialization of digital technologies are not only about catching up, they are also about dialectical thinking, which has enabled China to maintain a healthy growth. From Confucius' "learning and constantly practicing what is learned" to Chinese philosopher Wang Yangming's "unity of knowledge and action" in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Chinese philosophical ideas emphasize pragmatism, the theory of practice, which is different from European rationalism that focuses on regulating development and developing within regulation. In the film Ne Zha 2, Ne Zha's phrase that "My fate is in my own hands, not in Heaven's" is in line with the breakthrough achievements in AI by China, represented by Deep-Seek. Chinese researchers are breaking through the US-led technological blockade and writing an Eastern story of intelligence. Showcasing the depth of Chinese civilization, Deep-Seek embodies a cultural foundation that relies on human efforts rather than divine intervention. The Chinese language, with its 3,500 commonly used characters, has been outperforming English, which constantly invents new words, leading to soaring learning costs for large language models. Unlike Western capital-driven models, DeepSeek focuses on minimizing costs. Liang Wenfeng, a computer science teacher at Zhejiang University, established the hedge fund with classmates, using AI technology to achieve significant returns. Within the evolving multipolar framework, DeepSeek's emergence has necessitated critical examinations of algorithms' governance framework, triggering constructive discussions on equitable technological development in the global digital ecosystem.Chinese companies should realize the importance of tailoring technological talents to suit national conditions, much like the Chinese saying, "Those who live near mountains, live off the mountains; those who live near waters, live off the waters." While some argue that China's global reach is limited compared with that of the US, more Chinese enterprises can create more products that transcends Chinese culture and acquire global cultural traits. This shows technologies developed by China can be adapted to different national contexts without the need for hegemonic dominance.

To the best of my knowledge, Kris Schultz is the second“merch slinger” I've met that went on to pursue a lyrical life as a troubadour in her own right. My first experience was with Texas songwriter Kayla Ray as she first visited KC slinging merch for Jason Eady. I love Kris' trajectory…. check this out. Growing up in Topeka, Kansas, Kris was obsessed at an early age with the country songs of heartbreak and loss on the jukebox at a bar she visited regularly with her parents. At an early age, she showed promise in several sports, especially the field part of track and field eventually accepted a scholarship to throw Javelin at Kansas State University, where she majored in Radio/Television Journalism. While competing in the Texas Relays during her college career, she fell in love with Austin, TX. And soon moved there with only a box of books & CDs, a small stereo, and a bag of clothes. She walked into the city-ran Austin Music Network TV channel, asked for an internship, and soon was spending her days proof-checking videos of local music and taking in every note. But she still hadn't thought of playing music herself. After years assisting musicians as merch slinger, roadmanager and van driver, but never playing or singing herself, Kris eventually acquired a guitar and began writing songs. She released her full-length album, Standard Issue Heart, inOctober 2021, has played such legendary venues as The Saxon Pub and Cactus Café in Texas, toured in the Midwest, Southwest and Southeastern US, has been featured in the live performance series “Songs In Places.” Kris recently found herself in the Heartland and we connected to make an appearance on the Tasty Brew Music Radio Show happen. As most beer enthusiasts know, hops play a vital role in the brewing process. The cone-shaped flowers impart distinct aromas that help distinguish, say, a pilsner from a pale ale. Oregon is one of only three states, along with Washington and Idaho, that commercially grows hops. Oregon and Washington are also the only two states that have their own USDA-supported breeding programs to develop new varieties of hops. But only Oregon can lay claim to the Strata hop, a variety that was bred at Oregon State University and released in 2018. Nearly all Strata hops today are being grown at just nine family farms in the Willamette Valley. But this quintessentially Oregon hop is about to get a lot more exposure thanks to Oregon Homegrown, a statewide beer collaboration launching on May 23. For two weeks, more than 20 Oregon breweries will showcase the flavor versatility of Strata to create an array of beers, from a Vienna lager to a hazy IPA to a fruited ale. Jeff Alworth is a journalist, author of several books on beer and the executive director of Celebrate Oregon Beer, a nonprofit he created last year that’s organizing the event. Gayle Goschie is a third-generation hop farmer and the co-owner of Goschie Farms in Silverton. They join us to share more details about Oregon Homegrown and what makes Strata hops so special.

When Dennis Nyback died in 2022, the Portland film archivist and programmer had amassed a collection of thousands of reels of films, whether they were black and white cartoons, 1960s-era commercials or educational films shown in classrooms. Nyback would share his eclectic finds through curated screenings at independent movie theaters not only in Portland, but also across the U.S. and Europe. As reported by Oregon ArtsWatch, Nyback’s friends and fellow cinephiles faced a daunting challenge after his death to track down and sort through the thousands of mostly 16mm reels of film he left behind. That effort evolved into The Nyback Archive, with a group of volunteers working to catalogue Nyback’s collection and eventually make it available for public viewing and study. The team leading this effort began sharing some of the gems they’ve found through monthly theater screenings, like the “16mm Nyback Showdown” between dueling projectionists on May 6 at the Clinton Street Theater. Joining us to talk about the value of preserving analog film in our digital age are Greg Hamilton, a film curator and co-founder of The Nyback Archive, and filmmakers and curators Ioana Cherascu and Garrett Schroeder. Hamilton organizes screenings of films from the archive through his Psychotron Afterschool Special series, while Cherascu and Schroeder curate films from the archive and other acquisitions through their Astral Projections series shown in Portland and beyond.
