Steve Healis graduated from Cal Poly Pomona with an engineering degree but quickly realized he did not want to be an engineer. Procter & Gamble only hired engineers for their entry-level supervisory positions because engineers would have a better understanding of the technology – BUT they had to find engineers who also had people skills. Steve started as a supervisor in the laundry detergent (Tide, Bold, etc.) packaging department and, after two years, was promoted to warehouse manager. During this time, he learned how to hire, fire, discipline, motivate, and manage professionally. Later, he was recruited by Frito-Lay as the Sales Operations Manager, overseeing distribution facilities and the truck fleet in the Pacific Northwest. His last corporate job was as Sales and Customer Service Manager for Technicolor Videocassette in Newbury Park, CA. They duplicated videocassettes for all the major studios (Disney, Warner Brothers, MGM, etc.), and it was here that Steve learned about corporate sales and customer service. Six years of corporate jobs, combined with his engineering background, prepared him perfectly for business ownership. In 1988, a friend from Procter & Gamble asked Steve to join him in growing his part-time janitorial business. Steve said yes, and in six years, they grew the company from one employee to 50. Seeking more, they split in 1994, and Steve started Avalon Building Maintenance, Inc. with 20 employees. Over the next five years, he grew it to 450 employees, making the Inc. 500 list. Engineers with Steve's degree were known as “efficiency experts,” and he incorporated a limousine as a mobile office, equipped for work on the go. In 2002, Steve was approached to sell his company but declined because key employees would be let go. Instead, in 2003, he sold the company to his top employees with a 50-year royalty agreement. This allowed Steve to create a unique way to sell businesses that gives the seller a lifetime of residual income while enabling employees to buy the business with no money down. He has since helped many other businesses sell their companies this way (PassTheBaton.com). This reduced schedule over the last 21 years has allowed Steve the time and resources to launch various businesses, including an employment agency, a computer company, and a home cleaning company. He has started 25 total businesses with 28 partners, employing over 1,500 people, and recently launched a logistics company that helps people receive, inspect, store, deliver, and install high-end furniture in their new home or office. Steve lost his only daughter to mental illness and got divorced in 2018. In 2021, Steve met Andressa in Brazil, and they got married in 2023. -- Critical Mass Business Talk Show is Orange County, CA's longest-running business talk show, focused on offering value and insight to middle-market business leaders in the OC and beyond. We knew this day would come. The day where we finally talk about the one tech company all others look up to: Apple. The truth is that the behemoth has endured ups and downs to become one of the greatest brands of all time, and all under the leadership of Steve Jobs. So in this episode, we're taking marketing lessons from Steve Jobs based on his biography by Walter Isaacson with the help of our guest, Jotform CMO Steve Hartert. Together, we talk about being insatiably curious about your customers, daring to fail, and exercising your creativity. About our guest, Steve HartertSteve Hartert is the chief marketing officer at Jotform. He's had more than 30 years of B2B and B2C marketing management experience. Prior to Jotform, he was the president of Hartert & Associates, a marketing consultancy that worked with B2B and B2C companies. Steve has been actively involved in marketing internet companies since 1995. He holds a bachelor's degree from Cal Poly Pomona and an MBA from Cal State San Bernardino. What B2B Companies Can Learn From Steve Jobs:Be insatiably curious about your customers. Use their actions and feedback to inform your marketing. Appeal to what drives them and hook them emotionally. Steve says, “Look at how people use your products, your services… look how people use them. Really have a good, solid understanding of that customer's wants and needs. And sometimes they don't know what they want or need until you show them. Dare to fail. Experiment and strive for greatness despite the possibility of missing the mark. Steve says, “Business people and businesses in general pull back the reins because they're afraid of failure for some reason. But failure teaches you how to succeed.”Exercise your creativity. It takes practice stepping outside the bounds of traditional B2B marketing. But creative content makes you stand out from your competitors. Steve says, “How do you get the message out to people to want to now partake in your product or service? You have to be creative to get their attention and keep that attention and then make that product sell and continue to grow.”Quotes*”He just did what he thought needed to be done to create the right. work. And like that message to me is something that we so rarely do in marketing. Which is like, ‘What is the amount of work that needs to happen to create something great?' And so often we say, ‘What is good enough?' And you have to do that, right? You have to do things that are good enough sometimes. But if you want to make something great, you have to do a great amount of work.” - Ian Faison*”You need to sit there and look at the problem you're trying to solve from multiple angles. A lot of times what I have seen in marketing and in other disciplines of business is people sometimes get surrounded by ‘yes' people. They don't want to hear a bad thing. ‘Oh, we're weak in this area,' or ‘We're not good at that.' You need to hear it. Because if you don't address the full 360 around your product or service, to be able to defend it when something goes wrong, you're just walking yourself into a trap. And that's just a big blind spot that a lot of people have.” - Steve Hartert*”[Apple] had about a hundred ideas on this whiteboard. ‘These are great.' And then [Steve Jobs] said, ‘Okay, pick four of them because that's all we can do.' So they ended up having to focus on what products they were going to be working on for the next two or three years. And now you've got such clarity in the focus that you can't make a mistake on what you're trying to do. And that's very important. When companies lose that [focus], they get distracted by shiny things, by the latest trend or something that they could pop out there so they can get the stock price up for the next quarter. And so they just kind of bob and weave rather than pushing through on a forward path and saying, ‘We're going to do this and it's going to be tough to get there, but we need to do it.'” - Steve HartertTime Stamps[0:55] Meet Steve Harter, CMO at Jotform[3:14] Exploring the Genius of Steve Jobs Through Isaacson's Biography[5:36] The Art of Perfection: Lessons from Steve Jobs[9:45] Marketing Insights and the Pursuit of Excellence[15:07] Crafting Content with Precision: A Marketing Deep Dive[23:07] Strategic Focus and Innovation: The Apple Way[26:22] Unlocking Marketing Success: The Power of Focus[28:43] Steve Jobs' Legacy: A Lesson in Creativity and Control[31:07] Marketing and Creativity: Connecting the Dots[36:18] Jotform's Marketing Strategy[39:57] Content Creation: Telling Stories That Resonate[46:34] Advice for Crafting a Winning Content StrategyLinksRead Steve Jobs by Walter IsaacsonConnect with Steve on LinkedInLearn more about JotformAbout Remarkable!Remarkable! is created by the team at Caspian Studios, the premier B2B Podcast-as-a-Service company. Joining the show this week is someone who rejects normality in his pursuit to disrupt the hospitality industry, and who uses hospitality as a tool for preservation. Please welcome to the show, Author of the book “More Escapism”, and Director of Bensley Studios, Bill Bensley!Bill sits down with Host Dan Ryan for an enlightening conversation on the intersection between hospitality and conservation. Bill shares the importance of understanding the natural site you're building on, the benefit to training a local talent pool, and how his paintings build houses. Bill also shares some of the work the Shinta Mani Foundation has done including building over 150 houses and 1800 water wells, and funding local conservation projects. Takeaways: Hospitality involves sharing the deep knowledge of a place through architecture and design. A good project should always reflect the culture and the environment in which it is based. While much of hospitality is focused on sharing new experiences, it also needs to be focused on protecting the local environments. Through the revenue generated at a hotel, conservation programs should be put in place. Understanding the idiosyncrasies of natural sites is key to successful projects. Embracing and respecting Mother Nature's beauty is crucial in landscape and architectural design.Budget is a key component of any project, and when clients come in with big dreams, balancing those two desires can be tricky. To alleviate this, strong communication allows you to educate clients on what can realistically be achievedThe best way to learn about a site is to physically  spend time there before you start designing. By sketching on site, you get new perspectives and up close details that may not be accounted for on a first pass render. If you are building a hotel in an area with a limited talent pool, training local citizens is a strong strategy. This approach both develops a local workforce for the hotel, and offers local communities the chance to learn new skills and find employment. Quote of the Show:“Even though I'm a pretty darn good architect, no matter what I put on that site, it's never gonna be as good as what Mother Nature has already given us.” - Bill BensleyLinks:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/billbensley/?hl=en LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bill-bensley-336984b3/ Website: https://www.bensley.com/ Website: https://shintamanifoundation.org/ Book Link: https://thamesandhudson.com/more-escapism-hotels-resorts-and-gardens-around-the-world-by-bill-bensley-9780500024683 Shout Outs:04:20 - Shinta Mani Wild: https://shintamani.com/wild/ 07:50 - Cal Poly Pomona: https://www.cpp.edu/ 08:05 - Intercontinental Danang: https://www.danang.intercontinental.com/ 08:06 - JW Marriott Phu Quoc: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/pqcjw-jw-marriott-phu-quoc-emerald-bay-resort-and-spa/overview/ 08:08 - Rosewood Luang Prabang: https://www.rosewoodhotels.com/en/luang-prabang 15:57 - Capella Ubud: https://capellahotels.com/en/capella-ubud 18:31 - Coleman: https://www.coleman.com/ 23:29 - Shinta Mani Mustang: https://shintamani.com/mustang/ 23:58 - Conde Nast: https://www.condenast.com/ 25:27 - Hôtel de la Paix26:40 - Park Hyatt Siem Reap: https://www.hyatt.com/en-US/hotel/cambodia/park-hyatt-siem-reap/repph 28:58 - MOCA Bangkok: https://mocabangkok.com/about-us/ 31:58 - Shinta Mani Foundation: https://shintamanifoundation.org/ 37:32 - Baker Furniture: https://www.bakerfurniture.com/ 38:04 - Restoration Hardware: https://rh.com/us/en/ 38:18 - Jim Thompson: https://www.jimthompson.com/en 38:39 - High Point Market: https://www.highpointmarket.org/ 44:36 - Jim Thompson House: https://jimthompsonhouse.org/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419

This poll shows Congressman Adam Schiff leading in the campaign for what was Dianne Feinstein's Senate seat, with 25%. Then Congresswoman Katie Porter and retired baseball star Steve Garvey are tied for second with 15% each, followed by Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee at 7%, and a collection of other candidates combining for 6%. Undecided is actually leading this race, because 29% don't know yet which candidate they'll vote for, so there's plenty of time for these numbers to shift quite a bit before the March 5 primary.

Alumni Update Series, where we check in with our alumni to see how they're doing, celebrate their accomplishments and reflect on the lessons they learned from the program. Denia Angelino is a Class of 2021 alum. Denia Angelino is a daughter of undocumented immigrants, a first-generation Latina graduate of Stetson Law, and a California barred attorney. At seven months pregnant, Denia started her first semester of law school, and she experienced what it was like to be both a part-time and full-time student while taking care of her daughter. Following graduation, Denia took the California Bar Exam in July '21 and passed on the first try. Denia was admitted to the California Bar in January '23 and now practices landlord/tenant habitability law as a first-year associate, where she works on cases for tenants in Los Angeles, CA, who live in the same rough neighborhoods Denia grew up in. Denia is also a content creator who mentors the next generation of diverse women lawyers. Aside from lawyering and mentoring, Denia is also a volunteer assistant coach to Cal Poly Pomona's Mock Trial team. Currently, Denia enjoys living in San Diego, CA with her husband, six-year-old daughter, and their dog Mila.
