Progressively Older

Liz Cheney's great crime against the Republican Party is her refusal to turn her back on the truth. While Lindsey Graham thinks she doesn't understand that her position will hurt the Republican Party, the truth is she does. She has bigger fish to fry. She's trying to save the country.

The next year or two may determine the very survival of the American Experiment. Dozens of cases that will define who we are and what we stand for will reach the courts and determine the future direction we choose as a republic.

Winning is the new losing. Don't think so? Democrats have the House, the Senate and the White House and they are shackled by the filibuster and are in great danger of losing everything at the mid-term elections, thanks to anti-American tactics by the Republican Party. Sadly, there may be nothing anyone can do about it.

A day does not make a lifetime. It doesn't make a country. But it could make a start.

These three reasons came to me this week. What reasons are compelling to you? Why are you a progressive, or what is keeping you from becoming one?

Compromise becomes a legacy when it becomes what you are known for. Not for principles or an actual ideology, but for being ready, willing and able to toss that all aside for the short end money. When a country begins its journey with the Three-Fifths Compromise you just know there is trouble ahead, and it has dogged us for our entire history. The Civil War wasn't a war at all, it was just one battle in a struggle that continues for the soul of our country. Today's headlines scream that out.

The Republican Party has now descended to a point that all they have left is fear. They fear Trump, both his staying in the party and his leaving it, and they fear voters as they try to minimize their numbers. Fear is also the only policy they have to sell. They have no vision for the country to aspire to, only different types of people to fear and hate.

The Democratic majority in the Senate is so tiny it doesn't even exist. It is dependent on a tie-breaking vote by the Vice President to tip the scales, and that is if all lines hold! Joe Manchin showed how vulnerable the Democrats are to the whims of any one of them. Hobbies are even better when you are getting progressively older. If you're retired or think you might get there one day, one of the gifts of that is time. Is there something you have loved to do your whole life but didn't get enough time to do it? Is there something you wanted to do but work, kids, house and other responsibilities got in the way and you just never got around to it? Do it now! Pick up a guitar, a paintbrush, a crochet needle and try it. You're not too old, you're just in time! It seems clear that Merrick Garland will be our next Attorney General. The irony is that the same people that prevented him from consideration for the Supreme Court will vote to confirm him as A.G. The hypocrisy in the GOP just continues with no end in sight.

Rush Limbaugh is dead. This was the day that cancer was the good guy. The damage one man can do to a nation can no longer be overestimated. His influence on low information people came to its inevitable climax on January 6th, and the rise of the extremist right wing can be directly connected to his invention of a genre of broadcasting that was copied and expanded on the back of Ronald Reagan's elimination of the Fairness Doctrine. He was the first to cynically take advantage of the new freedom to foment hatred through the lowest common denominators of human behavior. Where we go from here is toward a struggle for decency, and Rush was one of the greatest obstacles to achieving that end. He is gone but the damage has been done and reproduced a hundred fold. in one way Trump was right to give him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, as a President Trump would have been impossible without Rush blazing the path. The second annual impeachment trial is now underway. Today the constitutionality of the proceeding was argued but now the fun begins. Will the GOP rally around the populist wing of the party or will they split apart at the seams? Beware of false prophets! These guys are racking up huge numbers on YouTube channels and they trade on the fears that people bring to the table. This recent crop of prophetic voices are, even the day before the inauguration, promising four more years of the Trump presidency to those who are terrified of the browning of America. Your fear is their prophecy. Don't be fooled. Older people are targeted as victims for every kind of scam one can imagine. Be skeptical, and don't think God is always gonna make you happy.
