This week on 'Good One', instead of a traditional deep dive interview, comedian Jay Jurden joins Jesse to unpack the biggest comedy news story happening right now – the Riyadh Comedy Festival; Why giant checks warp choices, what “free speech” really means when a contract bans criticism, and the difference between performing in a country and performing for its rulers. Jay talks personal safety as a queer comic, the soft-power calculus behind overpaying American stars, and why “come back safe—then we clown you” is the longstanding rule. Jeffrey Biegel is a Spectacular Concert Pianist. He's a Grammy winner and has a remarkable back story. At age three he was barely able to hear or speak, in fact he could hear only vibrations, until he had corrective surgery. This so-called 'reverse Beethoven' phenomenon is at the heart of his commitment to music. In 2025 he premiered three new works including one by Melissa Manchester. In 2021 he premiered a work in honor of former Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He's worked with conductors JoAnn Falletta and Lucas Richman. He received high praise from Leonard Bernstein who called him “a splendid musician and a brilliant performer." Beware the Slippery Slope We talk about the two sides of the Israel/Gaza war and how the media has covered what is happening. What we are told is not always correct or complete, and without seeing the big picture, it is difficult to make an accurate assessment. This is true for the wars that have occurred, the experimental gene therapy they called a "vaccine", and even what happened with George Floyd. We have to be willing to question everything. If killing someone in war is OK, then it can be a slippery slope to other bad acts. We can choose to glorify violence and destruction or we can choose to focus on peace and care. Small acts of kindness can have a larger impact than you might expect. Essentially, it comes down to "Do what is right", especially when no one is looking. That's how you can make the world a better place! Do wives kill their husbands? Some do! and Episode 114 profiles a few who definitely didn't honor their vows.First, Benton tells the tale of Omaima Nelson and the murder of her husband Bill, and Anna gives us the details of Susan Wright, who stabbed her spouse 193 times. Then, the two watch a classic episode of Forensic Filles, profiling the black widow, Stacey Castor. Our TV doc this week is Forensic Files Season 14: Episode 7, "Freeze Framed".
Anthropologist Dr. Bill Schindler went from dangerous wrestling weight cuts to unlocking the secrets of human survival through food processing. In this conversation, he explains why every plant on Earth contains toxins, how our ancestors developed technologies to make food safe and nutritious, and why modern food processing has gone dangerously wrong.Learn the truth about potatoes (hint: peel them), why fermentation was humanity's greatest innovation, and how a traditional restaurant is proving that ancestral food wisdom can work in the modern world. Schindler shares jaw-dropping stories from his travels with indigenous communities, from toxic manioc processing in Brazil to ancient cheese-making techniques that will change how you think about dairy. This isn't about going paleo or living like a caveman. It's about understanding that we have 300,000-year-old bodies trying to survive in a modern food system that prioritizes profit over nutrition. The solution isn't going backward, but applying ancient wisdom to contemporary life.Whether you're struggling with health issues, curious about human evolution, or simply want to understand why your relationship with food feels broken, this conversation provides answers that textbooks miss and doctors don't teach.BIG IDEA"We have literally over millions of years out eaten our digestive tract, and we require many of those technologies in our food system in order to transform raw materials into something that can actually nourish these bodies that we have today."Contact InfoBook: Eat Like a HumanInstagram: @drbillschindlerFacebook: @drbillschindlerWebsite: www.modernstoneage.comSend Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. When Dr. Nouran Abdelkader developed vitiligo—a disfiguring autoimmune skin condition—the UK's top dermatologist told her there was no hope and no treatment. The disease would spread everywhere, he said. She'd have to live with it forever. What happened next challenges everything we think we know about autoimmune disease, nutrition, and healing. This emergency medicine doctor didn't just heal her vitiligo. She also resolved her lifelong asthma, eczema, chronic hives, ADHD symptoms, depression, panic attacks, and brain fog. Her IQ jumped from 110 to 137. Her diabetic sister reduced insulin from 70 units to 7 units daily. The solution? She eliminated everything except meat, salt, and water.Dr. Abdelkader shares her controversial journey from believing every medical guideline to questioning the entire system. She explains why she now feels guilty prescribing standard treatments, how she risks her medical license by sharing her experience, and why she believes most medical research serves profit over patients. This isn't just another diet success story. It's a practicing physician's firsthand account of how the medical establishment fails patients with chronic disease—and what actually works when conventional medicine doesn't.Her transformation raises uncomfortable questions: If meat heals while fruits and vegetables inflame, what else have we gotten wrong? Why can't doctors share successful treatments that contradict guidelines? And how many people are suffering needlessly because the system won't acknowledge inconvenient truths?BIG IDEA"We are made of meat, water, salt and trace elements—so if you eat what you are made of, you'll be fine, but if you eat something we're not made of, like vegetables or sugar, problems arise."Nouran Abdelkader - Contact InfoLinkedIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nouran-el-dali-528a26b8Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. Today, we're diving deep into an emotion that doesn't often get the love it deserves: Guilt. An emotion we tend to push away, hide from, or drown out. But what if — instead of resisting guilt — we got curious about it? What if guilt wasn't here to punish us… But to guide us? Today on I Love Me The Podcast we're exploring the true purpose of guilt, and how to use guilt to evolve into a more aligned, heart-centred being. Take a peek at the full episode show notes (and resources I refer to in the show) here: https://gettingnaked.com.au/2025/09/24/ep-71-let-guilt-teach-you-not-torture-you/ About me… My name is Tamra Mercieca and I've been studying and teaching self-love worldwide for 20+ years now. In 2011 I launched my online school Getting Naked where I offer programs to help people strip off the stories and childhood conditioning, so they can fall in love with themselves. While I go by many labels - mumma, wife, tea lover, drummer - professionally I'm known as a Self-Love Therapist, Writer and Women's Pelvic Health Guide, qualified in over a dozen physical and mental health modalities. I'm the author of two books, have been published in dozens of print and online publications, appeared on TV many times, and love to share the teachings of self-love at yoga and spirituality festivals. Personally, my journey began when I worked out how to overcome suicidal depression and anxiety (and get off my meds). I then went on to create a ten-session program where I now help others do the same. The Real Ambassadors is a poignant tale of cultural exchange, anti-racism, and jazz history. And it's a love story — between life-long husband and wife partners, Iola & Dave Brubeck and their vision for a better world. Appalled by the racist treatment of Black jazz musicians in the United States in the 1950s and 60s, the Brubecks wrote a musical based on the Jazz Ambassadors Program established by President Eisenhower and the US State Department during the Cold War. In an effort to win hearts and minds, jazz musicians were sent out around the world to represent the freedom and creativity of America through their art form. Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and most of the other Jazz Ambassadors were Black. The irony is that they were treated like royalty around the world, but could not stay in hotels or play in integrated bands in their own country.Performed live only once, at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1962, the Real Ambassadors featured Louis Armstrong, Carmen McCrae, Dave Brubeck and Lambert Hendricks and Bavan. The musical was a chance for Louis Armstrong to speak out about his deep feelings about racism and segregation in this country — feelings he rarely expressed publicly. The story features original music, rare archival recorded letters sent back and forth between the Brubecks and Louis Armstrong about the project, rehearsal recordings and interviews with Dave and Iola Brubeck. Other voices include: the Brubecks' sons, Chris and Dan Brubeck, Keith Hatschek, author of the book, "The Real Ambassadors,” Ricky Riccardi, Director of Research Collections for the Louis Armstrong House Museum, and singer/actress Yolande Bavan, the last surviving performer involved in the project. Thanks to: Keith Hatschek, Chris Brubeck, Dan Brubeck, Ricky Riccardi, Yolande Bavan, Lisa Cohen, and Wynton Marsalis.Special thanks to: The Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation and the Louis Armstrong House Museum; Michael Bellacosa and the Brubeck Collection, Wilton Library, Wilton, Connecticut; The Complete Louis Armstrong Columbia & RCA Victor Studio Sessions 1946-66 Mosaic Records 270; The Milken Family Foundation Archive Oral History Project; and The Library of Congress.Produced by The Kitchen Sisters (Nikki Silva and Davia Nelson) and Brandi Howell in collaboration with Jackson Spenner. Dr. Ravi Kamepalli made a startling realization that changed everything: bacteria aren't the enemy. As both an infectious disease specialist and wound care physician, he witnessed firsthand how traditional medicine's war on microbes was failing patients catastrophically. In this profound conversation, he unveils his revolutionary "disease triangles" framework that connects our immune system, lipid metabolism, and microbiome in ways that transform how we understand healing. The statistics he shares will shock you: diabetic foot amputations have a higher five-year mortality rate than breast cancer. While diabetes costs healthcare systems $237 billion annually compared to cancer's $80 billion, we're attacking symptoms instead of root causes. Dr. Kamepalli explains his concept of "energy toxicity" - how excess stored energy triggers inflammatory cascades that turn our own immune systems against us.Through his personal journey of losing 50 pounds and dramatically reducing his LP(a) levels, he demonstrates that supposedly "genetic" markers are actually nutritionally modifiable. His approach integrates metabolic interventions with wound care, using continuous glucose monitoring, food logging, and remote patient tracking to address the underlying metabolic dysfunction that prevents healing. This isn't just about wound care - it's about reimagining medicine itself. Dr. Kamepalli advocates for moving beyond "mass medicine mindset" toward personalized, n-of-one healthcare that empowers patients with tools, tracking, and understanding rather than simply prescribing interventions. His vision extends from revolutionizing American healthcare to building sustainable systems in rural India.BIG IDEA"We cannot kill bacteria and keep the humans alive - we need to learn how to survive together, and that survival depends on fixing our metabolic dysfunction, not declaring war on microbes."Dr. Ravi Kamepalli Contact InfoWebsite: https://nobadbugs.com/Social Media: @WoundPhysicianWebsite: ColigoMed.comSociety for Metabolic Health Practitioners SMHP.orgSend Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. When nineteen-year-old Patty Hearst was kidnapped from her apartment in February 1974, everyone assumed the heiress had been abducted for the purposes of ransom. However, in the days that followed, Hearst's kidnappers, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), made themselves known when they sent a letter demanding the Hearst family provide food to every needy family in California. For nearly two months, the SLA held Patty Hearts captive, or so it seemed to the public. But when the group's demands were met and Hearst was given the opportunity to leave, the teenager shocked the world when, rather than flee her captors, she joined their ranks in support of their cause. Hearst's decision set in motion a chain of events that resulted in several acts of explosive violence and forever changed the way we think about victims of kidnapping. Yet in all the analysis of the case over the last fifty years, one question remains unanswered, and possibly unanswerable: Was Patty Hearst a willing accomplice to the SLA or was she a brainwashed victim trying to survive a traumatic ordeal?Thank you to the Amazing Dave White (of BRING ME THE AXE PODCAST) for research and writing assistance!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1974.
