This is this January's bonus episode of Short Stories of Hope. In this story, Aaron shares a quiet and unexpected moment centered on a woman on the edge of hunger and a small restaurant in New Jersey that becomes an unlikely turning point. What makes the moment even more surprising is the person who helps set it in motion, someone you'd expect to see under arena lights at a rock concert, not connected to an act of everyday generosity. It is a story about dignity, timing, and the small human gestures that can restore hope when it feels nearly out of reach. Bach's music turns up everywhere from cigar ads to horror films. You can probably hum bits of Bach even if you're not a classical fan. But what makes his music so popular and why is he still so influential 300 years on? To celebrate The Bach Choir's 150th Anniversary, we've made three special episodes all about Bach and his best-known compositions. This time our host and Musical Director, David Hill, is joined by BBC Radio 3's Linton Stephens to talk about six of Bach's most famous pieces. Along the way they tackle musical taboos (why can't most classical musicians improvise?), classical music wrangles (did Bach actually write the Toccata and Fugue?), and great stories (why did Bach once threaten a bassoonist with a sword?). Plus, we hear from some of our friends - including superstar organist and broadcaster Anna Lapwood - about their favourite Bach pieces.Want to see the video version of this podcast? At the Threshold is a short arts–health monologue that explores Alzheimer's through time, pause, and listening. Drawing on lived observation, personhood thinking, and the experience of apraxia, the piece focuses not on loss of memory, but on moments where action, recognition, and agreement arrive out of sequence — and sometimes return. Structured around the sound of wind moving through a room, the monologue invites the listener to stand in the space before decisions are made: where consent is not refusal, stillness is not absence, and waiting becomes a form of care. This work sits between theatre, medical humanities, and sound piece. It is an invitation to imagine the other — not as someone disappearing, but as someone navigating changing thresholds of access, timing, and recognition. Listeners are invited, at the end, to close the door if they wish.

Order NOW to get exclusive signed editions from BN.com AND the Special Edition from Target! In the winter of 1980, wealthy socialite Martha “Sunny” von Bulow was found unconscious in the bathroom of the mansion she shared with her husband, Claus, in Newport, Rhode Island. An ambulance was called and Sunny was rushed to the nearest emergency room, but paramedics and doctors were unable to revive her and Sunny would remain in a coma until her death in 2008. At first, Sunny's coma was a mystery to doctors, but soon suspicion fell on her husband, Claus, who appeared indifferent to her condition and was openly carrying on an affair with another woman. The family launched a private investigation and eventually turned up strong evidence they believed implicated Claus in the attempted murder of Sunny, but, as they soon learned, believing it and proving it were two very different things.ReferencesAssociated Press. 1985. Doug Reynolds thought he was bulletproof until his running career collapsed under mysterious weight gain and joint pain. Three weeks studying ketones changed everything—launching Low Carb USA and the Society of Metabolic Health Practitioners. What emerged wasn't just conferences but sanctuary for practitioners facing hostility from colleagues who resist dietary intervention. Margaret Atwood is a Canadian writer. She has published more than sixty books spanning novels, poetry, short stories, non-fiction, children's literature, and graphic novels, and has been called “one of the sharpest and most imaginative novelists writing in English”. She is one of only four writers to have won the Booker Prize twice: for The Blind Assassin in 2000 and for her 2019 follow-up to The Handmaid's Tale, The Testaments.Margaret was born in Ottawa in November 1939, shortly after the outbreak of World War II, the second of three children to Carl Atwood, an entomologist. During her early life, she would spend the warmer months in the remote forests of northern Quebec and Ontario where her father tracked insect infestations, and the winters in the city (first Ottawa, later Toronto). She didn't attend school for a full year until the age of twelve. Her childhood scribblings – a “novel” about an ant called Annie, a volume of rhyming poems about cats, and a play about a giant – turned into a more serious ambition to become a writer when Margaret was sixteen. After studying English at the University of Toronto, where she began publishing poems in the college magazine, her first novel, The Edible Woman, came out in 1969, following five collections of poetry. Her most famous work, The Handmaid's Tale, was published in 1985 and depicted a dystopian vision of the United States as a patriarchal and totalitarian place called Gilead. Although it was written during the Reagan era, it has become eerily relevant again in the wake of the election of Donald Trump. Margaret lost her life partner, the writer Graeme Gibson, in 2019. She lives in Toronto.DISC ONE: Anchors Aweigh - US Navy Band DISC TWO: Hearts of Stone - The Charms DISC THREE: Offenbach: Les contes d'Hoffmann, Giulietta Act: Barcarolle. When firefighters discovered the body of forty-year-old Terry King inside the charred remains of his Cantonment, Florida home in November 2001, they assumed the man had been asleep when the fire broke out and died as a result. Upon further inspection, investigators found that King hadn't died as a result of the fire, but from severe blunt force trauma to his head. And even more alarming than that was the fact that King's two boys, thirteen-year-old Derek and twelve-year-old Alex, were missing.Having occurred immediately in the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Terry King's murder could have easily been one of many tragedies lost in the fog of national trauma and grief; however, when King's killers were arrested and identified in the days that followed, the story was so shocking, and the motive so heartbreaking, that it managed to break through the wall-to-wall coverage of the attacks. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!Wrapping up 2025 with a conversation I shared with Rye, host of Codega's Codex of Curiosities! I hope 2026 is a blessing for you, God Bless! From the Show: In this episode of Codega's Codex of Curiosities, Rye the Codega sits down with Bo Kennedy, host of The BUMP Podcast, for a deep dive into one of the oldest and darkest figures in ancient lore: Lilith. But this isn't just another retelling of a myth — Bo takes us down the rabbit hole where biblical history, occult traditions, Nephilim lore, and the Sasquatch mystery collide. We explore why some researchers believe Lilith wasn't just a mythological rebel, but a real entity intertwined with the Watchers, the Nephilim, and the creation of the Elioud — and how these hybrid bloodlines may echo through modern sightings of Sasquatch and other hair-covered giants. Is Sasquatch a remnant of the Elioud? Is Lilith truly the mother of monsters? And why do ancient texts, hidden traditions, and modern encounters all point back to her? Bo and Rye unravel:Lilith's ancient origins — from early Mesopotamian demonology to Hebrew lore. The role of the Watchers and how their unions produced the Nephilim and later the Elioud. The Elioud–Sasquatch theory — why some believe Sasquatch may be a surviving branch of post-Flood hybrid giants. How Lilith connects to child-stealing legends, shapeshifters, night-demons, and modern paranormal encounters. Why patterns in cryptid sightings, ancient texts, and forbidden history might hint at a hidden lineage that started with her. This episode blends biblical mystery, cryptid lore, demonology, and high strangeness into one wild, fascinating journey. A reading of reflections and poems of Saint Symeon taken from various sources and translations including:~ The Book of Mystical Chapters: Meditations on the Soul's Ascent from the Desert Fathers and Other Early Christian Contemplatives, Translated by John Anthony McGuckin~ The Enlightened Heart: An Anthology of Sacred Poetry, by Stephen Mitchell~ The Fire rises in Me - English version by Ivan M. GrangerSaint Symeon the New Theologian (949 -1022 AD) was an Eastern Orthodox monk and poet who was one of the three saints canonized by the Eastern Orthodox Church and given the title of "Theologian." "Theologian" was not applied to Symeon in the modern academic sense of theological study; the title was intended only to recognise someone who spoke from personal experience of the vision of God. One of his principal teachings was that humans could and should experience theoria (literally "contemplation," or direct experience of God).Symeon was born into the Byzantine nobility and given a traditional education. At age fourteen, he met Symeon the Studite, a renowned monk of the Monastery of Stoudios in Constantinople, who convinced him to give his own life to prayer and asceticism under the elder Symeon's guidance. By the time he was thirty, Symeon the New Theologian became the abbot of the Monastery of Saint Mamas, a position he held for twenty-five years. He attracted many monks and clergy with his reputation for sanctity, though his teachings brought him into conflict with church authorities, who would eventually send him into exile. Symeon is recognized as the first Eastern Christian mystic to share his own mystical experiences freely. Some of his writings are included in the Philokalia, a collection of texts by early Christian mystics on contemplative prayer and hesychast teachings. Symeon wrote and spoke frequently about the importance of experiencing directly the grace of God, often talking about his own experiences of God as divine light. Another common subject in his writings was the need of putting oneself under the guidance of a spiritual father. The authority for many of his teachings derived from the traditions of the Desert Fathers, early Christian monks and ascetics. Symeon's writings include Hymns of Divine Love, Ethical Discourses, and The Catechetical Discourses.Photography: George Digalakis ~ The Sound of Silence / georgedigalakisphotography https://www.digalakisphotography.com/Music: "Let My Love Be Heard" by Jake Runestad. Send us a textThis Christmas tale isn't just a story; it's a mirror. In The Redemption of Mrs. Scrooge, you'll meet Jade, a mom quietly shaped by fear, control, and scarcity, doing her best to manage life, relationships, and expectations… until grace gently interrupts her story with unexpected generosity and hope. This modern retelling explores what happens when our patterns are exposed, not to shame us, but to free us.Performed as a dramatic reading by my mom, Paula West, this story captures the heart of the Wholehearted Enneagram:How fear shapes our coping strategies,How control can masquerade as wisdom,And how Christ lovingly rewrites our stories with truth, tenderness, and joy.As you listen, I invite you not to analyze, but to notice. What feels familiar. What stirs resistance? What invites release?Because peace isn't found in what you can control…it's found in what you're willing to lay down.RESOURCES FOR YOU: Book a High-Value Clarity Call with Amy Wicks https://www.simplywholehearted.com/callamywicks Not sure about your Enneagram Type?
