Killer in the Walls: The Crimes of Daniel LaPlante

Morbid

When Tina Bowen and her sister, Karen, began hearing knocking in the walls of their home in Pepperell, Massachusetts, the girls believed it was their recently deceased mother trying to reach out to them from beyond the grave. In time, however, the knocking became more intrusive and aggressive, and it was soon accompanied by objects being moved around the house and frightening messages left on the walls. After months of torment, the Bowens discovered that it wasn't a ghost haunting their home, but sixteen-year-old Daniel LaPlante, a boy Tina had briefly dated and who'd become obsessed with her. Daniel LaPlante was arrested and charged with various crimes, for which he was convicted and served a sentence in a juvenile detention center. Unfortunately, the court's decision to try LaPlante as an adult meant that he was granted bail and after just one year in detention, he was bailed out and allowed to live with his mother pending trial. It turned out that brief period of freedom was all the time LaPlante needed to find a new object of his obsession and by the time the police learned of his violent intentions, it was already too late. “How many valiant men, how many fair ladies, how many sprightly youths, … breakfasted in the morning with their kinsfolk, comrades and friends, and that same night supped with their ancestors in the other world.” Giovanni Boccaccio, The Decameron Between 1346 and 1353 a horrifying pestilence burned across Central Asia, North Africa and Europe. The infected, covered in bubos and burning with fever, died in agony, with no family left to care for them or priest to pray for their souls. In some areas 50% of the population was wiped out, leaving whole villages deserted with no one to bury the dead. Those who were lucky enough to be healthy, and have the means to do so, escaped disease riddled cities for the fresh, miasma-free air of the countryside. In the midst of this horror, Florentine Giovanni Boccaccio, wrote his seminal work, The Decameron, about 10 young people who flee the plague for a lavish, sexy Tuscan Villa vacation and to hopefully not die. This medieval masterpiece has recently been turned into a darkly hilarious Netflix series, which further explores the class and gender dynamics of the 14th century in a way that anyone who recently lived through a world-wide pandemic can relate to. Today lets explore the history and science behind the Black death; the plague pandemics that came before and after it, and find out if this horrendous disease is still a risk today. Plus we'll find out what the Decameron has to say about life, love, sex, and surviving the plague in 1348 and today. 265: He Developed Diabetes Running 50 Miles a Week - Dr. Tim Noakes

For decades, Professor Tim Noakes told the world that carbohydrate-loaded muscles were the secret to endurance performance. He built a career on it, wrote a bestselling running manual around it, and trained a generation of athletes to believe it. Then, standing at a podium, he tore the nutrition chapter out of his own book.In this conversation with Dr. Philip Ovadia, the South African physiologist traces a personal reckoning that began with an unlikely diagnosis: type 2 diabetes, arrived at while running fifty miles a week and staying lean. He walks through the science that forced him to abandon three decades of orthodoxy, the university battle and courtroom fight that followed his public reversal, and a model of carbohydrate metabolism built on two very different pools of glucose, one that barely matters and one that determines whether an athlete falters. The conversation moves from Cape Town laboratories to Mongolia to a South African courtroom, and lands on a mechanism connecting muscle glycogen, insulin, and the ability to burn fat that most people, including many physicians, were never taught.BIG IDEAHow much glycogen sits in the muscles determines whether insulin stays elevated and the body keeps burning carbohydrate instead of fat, a discovery that overturned decades of sports nutrition dogma and reframed muscle glycogen not as a performance reserve but as a dumping ground for excess blood glucose.Professor Tim Noakes Contact InfoWebsite: https://TheNoakesFoundation.orgBook: The Lore of Running (Complete Update Coming) https://amzn.to/3RUTRsVInterview with Dr. Eric Westman: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1810620/episodes/14766410Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. A cinematic classic meets a striking new musical vision in this special screening of “Frankenstein”, at Stissing Center in Pine Plains, NY starring Boris Karloff, featuring the world premiere of a chamber ensemble score by composer Michael Shapiro. Performed live by the Argus String Quartet with pianist Steven Beck—praised as “vivacious” by The New Yorker—this reimagined score brings new emotional depth to the film's iconic imagery. Shapiro's full orchestral version has already been performed by more than 80 orchestras worldwide. The evening begins with a Q&A with Boris Karloff's daughter, Sara Karloff. At the heart of the score is the mirrored relationship between Henry Frankenstein and his creation. “The monster is the doppelganger of Henry Frankenstein,” Shapiro notes, a connection reflected musically in unexpected ways. Dark, driving themes underscore the doctor's ambition, while the monster is accompanied by music that is at times gentle, haunting, and deeply sympathetic. Karloff's portrayal—imbued with a sense of soul—feels newly illuminated through this lens. Shapiro's score ebbs and flows alongside the film, heightening both its terror and its humanity—from the charged electricity of creation to the quiet, tragic innocence of the monster's brief encounters with the world.

Dr. Jay Wrigley, the physician behind Hormone Diet Doc, returns to the podcast after spending nine months building an entirely new framework for hormonal health, drawn from three decades in clinical practice and his own hundred-pound transformation. He rejoins Dr. Philip Ovadia to unpack why the standard thyroid test so often leaves patients with false reassurance, and what actually happens between the thyroid, the liver, and the cell before a hormone can do its job.The conversation moves through the hormonal shifts that accompany midlife in both men and women, why testosterone replacement is frequently reached for before the underlying metabolic picture is addressed, and the fourteen clinical patterns Wrigley built to help patients recognize what their bodies are actually signaling. Sleep emerges as a surprisingly central factor tying it all together. The two doctors close by discussing where artificial intelligence fits into the future of the doctor-patient relationship, and why clinical experience may remain irreplaceable even as AI tools become part of everyday health decisions.BIG IDEAA normal thyroid test result does not rule out a thyroid problem, and restoring hormonal balance starts with metabolic health, not with replacing hormones.Dr. Jay Wrigley Contact InfoHealth Assessment: https://assessment.drjaywrigley.com/Website: https://drjaywrigley.com/Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Nigerian policed arrested 22-year-old for converting to Christianity Nigerian police arrested a 22-year-old woman for converting to Christianity from Islam, reports International Christian Concern. Though the Federal High Court ruled in her favor, the Christian family that helped her is facing false charges of kidnapping. In 2025, “Sarah” fled from her home in Kano State after her elder siblings tried forcing her into an arranged marriage with a Muslim. While she was on the run, a Christian family took her in and shared the Gospel with her. Through the Abaras family's witness, she gave her life to Jesus Christ.  When her siblings learned of her conversion, they began working with the local Hisbah, the Islamic police force, to track her down and arrest her.  Police discovered her and detained her for four days, during which they beat her and pressured her to return home and accept the Muslim-arranged marriage. When she was released, the Abaras family helped her escape to a neighboring state with less Muslim influence. Please pray for Sarah's safety and that her Christian faith would grow stronger. According to Open Doors, Nigeria, Africa is the seventh most dangerous country worldwide for Christians. Ex-Fauci adviser pleads guilty to concealing COVID-19 origins On August 18th, Dr. Anthony Fauci's former senior adviser pleaded guilty to plotting to conceal federal records related to research on the origins of the deadly COVID-19 pandemic, reports the Associated Press. Dr. David Morens is scheduled to be sentenced on November 12 by U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Greenbelt, Maryland. Morens pleaded guilty to conspiring to defraud the U.S. government, a felony punishable by a maximum prison sentence of five years. Morens is accused of using his private email account to intentionally circumvent public records laws while employed at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The Justice Department alleges that he concealed or destroyed records of discussions related to COVID-19 research grants, including an effort to revive a controversial coronavirus grant. The indictment follows a probe by House Republicans into the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic that scrutinized Morens' email communications and accused him of intentionally concealing records. In congressional testimony, Morens denied attempting to evade federal transparency laws by using his personal email. Proverbs 12:22 says, “The Lord detests lying lips, but He delights in people who are trustworthy.” Senator Darline Graham performed poorly in Senatorial run-off debate On August 19th, NewsMaxTV hosted the South Carolina GOP Senatorial run-off debate between Senator Darline Graham, who was appointed by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster in the wake of the death of her brother Lindsey Graham, and Congressman Ralph Norman. When Greta Van Susteren asked a foreign policy question, it was clear that Senator Darline was out of her depth. Listen. VAN SUSTEREN: “Senator [Graham], are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States? If so, why?” GRAHAM: “Um. I'm sorry. Could you repeat the question?” VAN SUSTEREN: “Are Taiwan and the South China Sea national security issues for the United States. And if so, why or how?” GRAHAM: “I'm just going to be honest here. I'm not on national security. I'm not that informed on national security. (audience boos and laughs) So, but I do support the military. My brother was in the Air Force for 33 years, so I will do everything I can to support the military. My dad was in the Army. “I'm not a polished politician up here. I'm … National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise. But I do support the military.” By contrast, Congressman Ralph Norman, her opponent in the South Carolina GOP Senatorial run-off, said this. NORMAN: “Taiwan's a definite ally. We have a trading relationship with them that is beneficial to the United States – [computer] chips being one of them, and others. “So, what the, what the president is doing right is he's enabling Taiwan to defend themselves against China. But it's peace through strength that he's showing with Iran that China, Russia, others are looking at it. They don't want to deal with America, and that's why they haven't attacked Taiwan. “If they had some weak Democrat in office, like Biden or another Obama, yeah, they'd take it over. But we can't let that happen. Peace through strength is working.” J.D. Vance believes Christian lifestyle suffices over verbal evangelism And finally, in a July 15th appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Vice President J.D. Vance, who converted to Catholicism from Protestantism, explained that he does not evangelize by word. VANCE: “You know, I don't preach to people. I don't, like, walk into the White House, tell my employees, ‘You know, you need to be, you need to follow Jesus as your Lord and Savior.' I just try to live my life in a way that hopefully makes people a little curious about what, you know, what motivates me and what inspires me.” Todd Friel, a reformed pastor in Atlanta, is the host of the Wretched Network which produces radio shows, TV shows, and books. He says the notion of wretched is at the very core of the Gospel because God saves wretches like us. Friel had this response to Vice President Vance. FRIEL:  “According to 1 Peter 3, that is true: We should live in such a way that it causes unbelievers, who are persecuting us, to ask about the reason for the hope that lies within us. That is most certainly true. “However, that is not the end of our responsibility. We are also called to make the most of every opportunity, to go and make disciples. It is our lifestyle that undergirds our confession, testimony, and evangelism. But a lifestyle is not evangelism itself.” Joe Rogan agreed with Vice President Vance. ROGAN: “I think living by example is probably the best promotion of any good way to live your life …” VANCE: “I agree.” ROGAN: “… whether it's Christianity or any other religion. I think that's definitely the way to do it.” Friel replied with this analysis. FRIEL: “It is a part of it. It does undergird our testimony, but how will they hear unless somebody preaches to them? In other words, evangelism requires words! Nobody can actually find a credible source of Saint Francis of Assisi, who said, ‘Share the Gospel, and if necessary, use words.' Well, it is necessary! Otherwise, you're just being a nice person.” Indeed, in Romans 10:14-15, the Apostle Paul asks, “How then will they call on Him in Whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in Him of Whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the Good News!'” Close And that's The Worldview on this Friday, August 21st, in the year of our Lord 2026. An Endocrinologist Got Sick and Her Own Specialty Couldn't Fix Her - Dr. Cassie Smith

Dr. Cassie Smith spent a decade being failed by her own specialty. As a board-certified endocrinologist, she developed Graves' disease, then Hashimoto's, then infertility, and no colleague could give her an answer. The answer she eventually found wasn't in a prescription pad. It was in her gut.In this conversation with Dr. Philip Ovadia, Smith explains why millions of people on thyroid medication still feel exhausted, and why the problem often isn't the hormone itself but whether the body can actually use it. She walks through what happens when the gut lining is damaged, how certain bacteria hijack digestion, and how that chain reaction leaves cell receptors locked against the very medicine meant to help. Smith also addresses the scale of the problem: an estimated 50 million Americans may be hypothyroid without knowing it, missed entirely by standard lab testing. Now running a cash-based functional medicine practice that treats patients across 46 states, Smith lays out where recovery actually has to begin, and why it rarely starts with a pill.BIG IDEAThyroid medication so often fails not because the medicine is wrong, but because chronic gut inflammation locks the cellular doors hormones need to pass through.Dr. Cassie Smith Contact InfoBOOK: Fix Your Gut, Fix Your Hormones (https://amzn.to/4gCc9sV)WEBSITE: https://www.modern-endocrine.com/INSTAGRAM: @modernendocrine_WEBSITE: https://GutHormoneFix.comSend Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. CLICK HERE! To send us a message! Ask us a Question or just let us know what you think!“No words can increase the glory of the immortal Washington” is the kind of line that can turn a founder into a statue. We go the other direction and treat Washington as a living source of leadership lessons, pulling from the language of his farewell to ask what still applies to American politics right now.We talk through the shift from celebration to substance: the dream of having Washington's voice recorded, the image of him laying aside office and walking back to Mount Vernon as an ordinary citizen, and the quiet power of a leader choosing restraint over control. That choice isn't just history, it's a blueprint for peaceful transitions of power and a reminder that a republic depends on culture as much as it depends on law. Then we sit with the hardest lines, the ones that sound like they were written for the age of polarization: moderating the fury of party spirit, warning against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, and guarding against the impostures of pretended patriotism. We connect those ideas to modern civic trust, media manipulation, and the habits that protect democratic institutions. We also highlight Washington's humility about error and his hope for the “benign influence of good laws under a free government,” a phrase that captures the real goal behind the American experiment. If you care about George Washington's Farewell Address, American leadership, civic virtue, and the future of the republic, this conversation is for you. Six years later, it's interesting to look back at the summer of 2020 and remember that Christopher Nolan's Tenet was intended to save the movie industry in the midst of its worst crisis ever, the COVID-19 pandemic. Nolan was locked in a battle with Warner Brothers over its desire to debut his new film on its recently launched streaming service, HBO Max. Nolan insisted it open in movie theaters. But when would that be allowed to happen? Turns out, it opened in a lot of places, including America, and ended up making $365 million worldwide, which is an incredible feat. But how would it have played in a normal summer? Would it have been the same kind of blockbuster as Inception, Interstellar, and The Odyssey? This is a very, very difficult and challenging movie, for all its popcorn picture trappings. And we are still trying to figure out what exactly is going on with it and how we feel about it. Robin Switzer has spent nearly a decade building one of the largest gatherings in metabolic health, watching thousands of people arrive chasing the same thing: a way to feel better. But somewhere between the Oura Rings, the continuous glucose monitors, and the endless lists of things to optimize, something shifted. Dr. Philip Ovadia and Jack Heald sit down with Switzer to talk about that shift, and why the community she built around the ketogenic diet has quietly become something much bigger. They cover what changed after a new administration took aim at food policy, why a DNA test she never expected to believe in turned out to be right, and why the physical experience of being in a room with people pursuing the same goal does something no podcast or YouTube video can replicate. The conversation turns to the people bringing new ideas to this year's event, from visceral fat specialists to electromagnetic frequency experts, and what all of it says about where the wellness movement is actually headed.BIG IDEAThe most reliable path back to health may not be more tracking, more data, or more devices, but the momentum that comes from being physically surrounded by people committed to the same goal.Robin Switzer Contact Infowebsite: hackyourhealth.comDiscount Code “iFixHearts”Send Dr. Ovadia a Text Message. We said The Prestige is the "most" Christopher Nolan movie, and that Inception is his most autobiographical... but it turns out we were wrong, because both apply to Interstellar. It's a movie where a character literally says, "I'm not afraid of death. I'm afraid of time." It's a movie about a man who desperately wants to return home to his children, except that he wants even more to go do some cool stuff in outer space. The movie's working title was Flora's Letter, referring to Nolan's real-life 11-year-old daughter Flora, the inspiration for the character of Murph. And it's probably Nolan's best movie. Laci and Matt spend more than three hours celebrating this masterpiece, and talk a lot about whether you should even care if the human race got resurrected via a tube of sperm on another planet hundreds of years in the future.    Watch this Interstellar podcast in full on YouTube: https://youtube.com/@1weekrental  Get more 1-Week Rental on Patreon: https://patreon.com/1weekrental  Next episode (Aug. 14, 2026): Tenet (2020)!   The Summer of Nolan is our summer 2026 miniseries covering the movie career of Christopher Nolan through nine movies on the main feed (plus additional episodes on the Patreon!), presented in chronological order, starting with Memento and going through Oppenheimer. Stories From Women Who Walk

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The other day my longtime, dear friend and storytelling galpal, Michelle, asked me if I'd like to take over an expiring domain name. Why would I be interested in that? Because the name, Storywerx, was what we called ourselves, a troupe of storytellers who came together when I offered to teach a semester of story skills. We kept on learning, growing, and  eventually performing stories together. I'd not thought about Storywerx in years although a few of us are still in touch. A little older, a little wiser but still storytellers at heart and in practice. I was trying to remember a story that a gentleman in our troupe had told during a Storywerx performance. I vaguely remembered it having something to do with the teller's past. It was a story about an orphan boy who brought a stone to life. Here's a secret: the more you get to know a storyteller and listen to the stories she is telling, the more you will get to understand her life and why that story is being told at that time. Meanwhile, leave it to Michelle to know what I was searching for. I'd like to share the story with you as we walk each other home.   Once upon a time there lived a little orphan boy who was so lonely and so hungry that no one wanted to be near him. His mouth was always open, his teeth were always showing and his tears were always flowing down his cheeks. He was such a wild child—wild with hunger and loneliness—that the people in that village had to tie him down at the entrance to one of the skin houses so that he would not try to eat the hunters on their way to the seal hunt. That's how hungry he was. Sometimes the people of that village would leave him bits of reindeer or seal meat but nothing would satisfy his hunger. As we know it was something more than hunger that was gnawing at him: those deep needs that not even the person themselves understands. Every day the boy stretched his chain a little bit more and a little bit more until he could get near a smooth round stone that was about his size. You see, his mother and father had died one night and their bodies dragged off by bears. All that had been left behind in the skin house where they all had lived was this one large stone. In time the boy got close enough to that stone, so close he was able to wrap his arms and his legs around it and would not let go. Of course his people thought the child had become quite mad. On their way from the hunt with animal carcasses slung over their shoulders they would jeer at him. They would say look and say: Annuk has taken a stone for a wife! It's good for you to have a wife who is a stone so you cannot use your hunger to eat her. The boy was so hungry and so lonely that he finally reached the end of feeling for his life. He kept his body wrapped around that stone and the stone began to take the heat from his body. The boy began to die as the stone took the heat from his hands, from his legs, and even the heat from his face where he rested it on the stone. Just as the boy was living his last breath the hunters of that village came by on their way home from the hunt. Again they shouted to him, Boy! You are like a bird nesting with that stone like it's an egg. We should call you Bird Boy! You are good for nothing. Near death the boy shed great icy tears that rolled down his cheeks and those cold cold tears hit the hot hot stone with a hiss and a crack and the stone broke open. Inside was the most perfect little girl the boy could ever want. She said, I am here for you now. You are an orphan no more. She gave him a bow and arrows and a harpoon. The boy and the girl made their house, raised a family and if they are not yet dead they are in that land where the snow is violet and the night sky is black. They are living still. Story Prompt: Recall a time when you felt at your lowest ebb and yet a deep intuition sensed that the darkest hour is just before dawn. And with the dawn would come what you needed to find your way back home. Write that story and share it as you will because we are all walking each other home.   The Stone Child - An Inuit Story from Warming the Stone Child by Clarissa Pinkola Estes You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, subscribe & spread this episode  with a generous 5-star review & comment—it helps us all—& join us next time! Hey there, Believers! This week's episode is super important, and I hope that you'll share it with everyone you know... I'm bringing on Eric Mock, VP of Slavic Gospel Association, along with Pastor Valenytn, who lives and ministers in Ukraine. Founded in 1934, Slavic Gospel Association (SGA, www.sga.org) helps “forgotten” orphans, widows and families in Ukraine, Russia, the former Soviet countries of Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and Russian-speaking immigrants in Israel – caring for their physical needs and sharing the life-transforming Gospel. SGA supports an extensive grassroots network of local evangelical missionary pastors and churches in cities and rural villages across this vast region. For many Ukrainian children, their earliest memories are marked by war. Summer Camps sponsored by Illinois-based Slavic Gospel Association (SGA) offer them a glimpse of the childhood they were meant to have.Key facts:More than 80,000 children are expected to attend SGA-supported summer Bible camps across Ukraine and the former Soviet Union this year.Since 2022, 279,058 children and teenagers have attended the camps.Camps provide meals, games, friendships, Bible teaching and practical support for children affected by war, displacement, loss, hunger and food insecurity. At one recent camp in southern Ukraine, nearly 100 children knelt in prayer. Some parents were so moved that they joined them.Camp activities continue under the threat of air-raid alerts and missile and drone attacks.God BlessHave an experience that you'd like to share?Holler at me: thebumppodcast@gmail.comFeel led to donate to The BUMP Podcast?Check out www.buymeacoffee.com/thebumppodcastPick up my books!Army of God- https://a.co/d/0S3HttWTerror by Night- https://a.co/d/2tIy8yYMeet all your survival and EDC needs here!www.squatchsurvivalgear.comUse Promo Code BUMP26 to save 15% sitewide!
