Planting seeds for the future one word at a time...We briefly unpack one word, tell stories, share some insight, and just reflect on how we can use and teach that word for it to be a vehicle of inspiration in the lives of those that look up to us; our students, our sons, daughters, nieces, nephews, neighbors…you name it. One person can change the entire life and mindset of a child regardless of their environment. Be that strong oak, a trusting dependable place for a child to just be a child but also learn about the enormous potential they each possess for the future.

We still need kids to want to be teachers when they grow up. That doesn't happen without engaging inspiration. Are your students stuck in a rut? Do they seem to lack the motivation to learn new things? If so, it might be time to encourage them to explore more adventurous learning opportunities. What if we created immersive experiences for students where they not only saw themselves but they saw possibilities. In this episode, we not only talk about exciting adventures but also how to infuse that learning into the classroom in ways that keep kids coming back for more. That's the goal... to have learning be so engaging kids just can get enough. What would that take from us as educators and parents? Do you remember the last time you were truly free? Not held back by anyone or anything, just living in the moment and enjoying life for what it is? For most people, this doesn't happen very often. We are constantly told what to do, how to do it, and when. This type of lifestyle can be stifling for some people, but there is a way to break free from these chains. Being a free spirit means living life authentically and with purpose. It means being true to yourself no matter what anyone else thinks. And as educators, we have the unique opportunity to show our students what this looks like. In this episode, we talk about how we can do this by being passionate about our work, living our best lives, and treating others with respect. When we model this behavior for our students, they will be more likely to do the same! Having power is one thing; using it well and for the good of others is an entirely different thing. Knowing when to wield some power could be the most powerful thing that someone can do. To responsibly be powerful, you have to consider the outcomes... Who is at the other end of the power that you wield? This means you give over that power frequently to give the practice and pathways for students to figure that out...even in the youngest of grades. If students leave your classrooms only knowing your thoughts, that doesn't prepare them for when they have to use their own. When it comes to your students in that year, you have them, how effective you are as a leader, the opportunities you create and curate for your students directly impact their ability, the trust between you, and their evolution of skills and mindsets. In this episode, we are talking about what it means to be a powerful educator that is truly aligned with the empowering of others as the end goal. When we empower all the parts of us, even those that are self-proclaimed imperfect, that effort has the power to affect how we see the world, the environments, and the relationships all around us. There is a deep level of reflection that has to take place and continue to take place to be accepting of yourself, your process, and your journey. Authenticity and imperfection go hand and hand. You will notice that our episodes this season intentionally build on each other. My hope is that every educator has the opportunity to feel safe enough to be an imperfect, growing, teacher that STILL strives for greatness and excellence. In this episode, I talk all about a sudden realization I had about the expectation of perfection placed on students when I woke up on the wrong side of the bed... Let me explain! There is a lot is leading up to someone being comfortable enough to be their authentic self and feeling safe enough in the spaces you curate for them to continue doing so day in and day out. We want kids to feel like despite challenges or anything that may come their way while they're in those spaces, you know for sure that you are showing up as you are, and so are they. It is the season to have all of who one is on display. It is a time to be all the beautiful things that one is at once. It is a time to be loud and thoughtful, and angry and loving and ratchet and academic, with fire in the belly and a desire to push the world to reimagine how they see us and others like us. -Dr. Chris Emdin, Ratchetdemic If that does not light you up or the concept of just being your authentic self, no matter what, I don't know what will truly; I was lit on fire by that quote. It just made me think that so much has changed and that today's sense of identity is not yesterday's sense of identity. Things have changed. Things are shifting. Kids are more encouraged to be empowered, which is different from what many of us experienced growing up. In this episode, we dive into the nitty-gritty of the nuances of being one's authentic self in the classroom and beyond. Students can't be confident in their abilities if they don't understand the power of their own brains and bodies. Let's start there. One of our core essential understandings is that the brain is malleable. Knowing that the brain is continually making new connections, creating new neurons, pruning away the unused, a TON in the early childhood and adolescence years, it makes me challenge the idea of learning styles. (Covers eyes and peeks through fingers...lol) This may be an unpopular opinion, but I have my reasons, hear me out. I know you may be thinking the last episode was about courage, isn't that the same thing as confidence? NOPE! While courage is more about the outward outcome and action, confidence is more about the inner work to need to get to that point. "It is confidence in our bodies, minds, and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures." -Oprah Winfrey I was listening to a panel on a virtual conference, and the panelist mentioned a definition of confidence that had a significant difference from what I thought confidence to mean. When I think about confidence, I automatically couple it with a fearless attitude. I think of a lion or lioness hunting with full confidence that they will catch their prey type of energy. The panelist mentioned a definition that had a subtle beauty that I believe highlights a gentleness that is often missing when we raise our kids. Would that child in your classroom that says they want to be a teacher when they get older still want to be a teacher after they have had you as their teacher? I once said on a panel discussion that "teaching can be just as lucrative and progressive as any other career… doctor, lawyer, businessman or woman on Wall Street." The ballroom of educators gasped then took the ride with me. We see our work at Revolve Learning as a way to lift teachers in historically marginalized communities out of the poor profession mindset and into seeing the profession of teaching as a fruitful, meaningful, and impactful career where we move the needle of social justice, empowerment, and advocacy. We still need the kids to say, "I want to be a teacher when I grow up." There is no better place for children to learn than from teachers who love what they do and see their impact on their children's lives. There is so much going on in our world. It seems as if a light bulb has turned on for many people, a reckoning of sorts. The core of this podcast is for the empowerment of people to lean in with the opportunity they have to be an agent and a catalyst for changing the lives of people for generations to come. This support has to be in every way, not just when it is convenient for us. That is going to require a large helping of courage. Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. -Anais Nin The catalyst for that movement of shrinking or expanding is the people around you and the relationships that you have with them over time. The act and ability to choose to push through fear to participate in an experience fully is a skill that we must learn how to get back. That's courage! Courage is defined as the ability to do something that frightens one. Check out all the resources at www.revolvelearning.com! Check out the blog post for this episode here! This episode takes a close look at THREE (plus a bonus…wink) things that are your job if you take on the great RESPONSIBILITY to educate children at any grade level. We are sensitive to the times we are in right now but want to be responsive and attuned to the needs of our students, which are guaranteed to return to school with a wide variety of new and potentially adverse experiences from home. With the reality of education changing before our eyes after a global pandemic, now more than ever, we need to reset our mindset to be clear about the power that is within our control. You STILL have the power to make a meaningful impact on your students by building relationships, empowering change, and impacting the environments in your classroom (virtual or in-person) and throughout the school.
