Women whose pioneering work laid a foundation for future feminist thought, greater autonomy and independence shared a commitment: I may be one among many but I can draw many to me like fillings to a magnet and together we will do the work that's calling to be done. The bipartisan 2016 Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act (Lautenberg) Amendments enacted extensive changes to the 1976 Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) that many hoped would set the law on a new course, address its widely recognized challenges, and accelerate U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) actions to address public health threats. Since then, four administrations have put their mark on implementation of the amended law. The past ten years have seemed like a roller coaster of competing legal interpretations of some of the Lautenberg Amendments' most significant provisions, scientific debate and analyses, rulemakings, delays in meeting TSCA deadlines, and major milestones. To celebrate Lautenberg's ten-year anniversary, the Environmental Law Institute, the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health, and B&C convened an all-day conference: TSCA Reform -- Ten Years Later. The podcast you are about to hear is the panel discussion on new chemical review. Questions over EPA's implementation of the Lautenberg Amendments to TSCA Section 5 new chemical review rose quickly and have not abated. Spirited debate continues over how well the program is working, what challenges persist, and what changes may be needed to improve and hasten new chemical review. Environmental advocates have questioned whether the program is doing enough to ensure that new chemicals are safe. This panel discussion explores the reasons underlying the debate over the long-term impacts of decisions on new chemicals, if there is a need to "fix" the program and what that would mean, how "reasonably foreseen" future conditions of use are identified and addressed in the new chemical review process, the impacts of significant new use rules, and the role pre-manufacture review of new chemicals plays in protecting public health and effects on innovation and safer chemicals, among other key issues. Penrith were at their clinical best, taking the the Storm's defensive fragilities on the edges; the bugbear and major concern of Head Coach Craig Bellamy all season. But a spirited second half showing saw Melbourne score 14 unanswered points against the Premiership favourites, but Penrith's defence, specifically their goal line D was resolute as they managed to keep turning away Storm time and time again. The effort by Melbourne was evident, but lacking the class of the competiton's joint-leaders with missing personnel was the real difference between the two teams. Lacking the star power and polish on last play options have inevitably hurt Melbourne for most of Season 2026. Inspired by a listener email, Justin and John Heath (of EAP Society and Atomic Wax) got into a vigorous debate over whether Elvis's musical output in the years following his return from the US Army were creatively stagnant, or a different sort of ambition, with Elvis intentionally exploring new sounds and styles, finally trying to marry the country, blues and rock and roll he had already mastered with traditional pop stylings he had aspirations toward but not perfected during the 1950s. Across hit singles and albums like "Something for Everybody," "Pot Luck," and the "lost" album from the 1963 sessions, as well as soundtracks such as Blue Hawaii, Fun in Acapulco and Viva Las Vegas, the guys try to trace Elvis' creative journey, comparing Elvis' artistic flourishes, direct influences and creative engagement during the period before the slog of poor Hollywood movies hampered his investment in material. Finally, Justin prompts John to jump in a time machine and play armchair producer, suggesting some theoretical material that Elvis might have shown even greater investment, bringing himself more fully to the proceedings - and just to be fair, Justin does the same! Even though yōkai can be portrayed as ghosts, demons, or monsters, they're rarely purely good or evil. We trace the history of yōkai from ancient folklore to Studio Ghibli films and shows like Dan Da Dan. I talk with scholars Kaitlyn Ugoretz, Deborah Shamoon, and Michael Dylan Foster about why these supernatural beings have captured people's imaginations, how they became central to modern pop culture, and the role they play in Japan even in times of national emergency.
