Leah Steuer, Laura Schumacher, and Olivia Riley unpack murder, memes, and multiple turtlenecks on TV's newest and weirdest network procedural (comedy?) drama, Prodigal Son.
Join Dillon and Erica for deep video game lore, egregious Olive Garden content, and why you should probably go see Birds of Prey instead.
In which Erica, Tim, Laura, and Tom try to untangle the insane performances and twists and turns of the magnificent Universal Pictures flop Dolittle.
In which Erica, Dillon, and special guest Laura react to the smash sensation Cats! Weird eroticism! A flexible Dame Judy Dench! Macavity! Which podcaster will be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer? Find out in the second episode of Filmies React! It's a Jellicle good time.
In which we join Dillon Mitchell and Erica Moulton in a discussion of the already-iconic Christmas-themed Romantic Comedy™️ Last Christmas. Come for the film analysis, stay for the color commentary with such classic lines from our commentators as “Emilia Clarke and Emma Thompson doing shots at a farmer's market, what's not to like about that?” and “the Christmas Gibbon and lesbian pudding are definitely high points in this movie.” General themes include Brexit, Post-GOT Emilia Clarke discourse, and evergreen discussions of Henry Golding's hotness.
Welcome back to Signals, a podcast produced by the staff of Playback. We chatted with U.W. Madison's own Dr. Lori Lopez about her recent keynote at the Fan Studies North America conference, held at DePaul University in Chicago between October 24th and 26th, 2019. Dr. Lopez's talk, entitled “Crazy Rich and Other Asian American Fandoms,” explored the increasing visibility of Asian-American media audiences as well as the discourses developing within and around them. We're happy to spotlight Dr. Lopez's research as well as hear a bit about her larger methodologies and experience at the conference!
What's the only meme you can actually experience through a podcast? Audio memes! From The X-Files theme to “The Sound of Silence”, Olivia Riley and Taylore Woodhouse (M.A.s, Media & Cultural Studies) take you on a lively sonic journey through some under-studied meme magic. Tune in to hear about the good, the bad, and the Batman!
Playback is proud to present our first podcast! Welcome to Signals, a podcast produced by the graduate students in Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Playback Audio features a diverse collection of reflections on media: interviews with emerging and distinguished scholars, discussions of media pedagogy, sound scholarship, audio essays, and more. Our first podcast features Matt Connolly, Ph.D. (Film), whose article “Liberating the Screen: Gay and Lesbian Protests of LGBT Cinematic Representation, 1969–1974” was recently published in the Winter 2018 issue of Cinema Journal. He's joined by Nick Benson, Ph.D. candidate (Media and Cultural Studies) for a conversation on his research, from its conception to the writing process to time management. Listen in for some awesome insights into queer media histories and pursuing the publishing process while dissertating!
