In this episode, Dr. K unpacks the growing phenomenon of "femcels" and the hidden traps of modern dating. Reacting to a viewer struggling with anxious attachment and limerence, he explains why setting impossible "romcom" standards destroys real-world connection and breaks down the psychological danger of feeding your mind a toxic internet diet. What to expect in this episode: The Myth of "Happily Ever After": Why finding a "soulmate" isn't the finish line, but merely the "seed" that requires years of active cultivation to actually grow into a healthy relationship. Fantasy vs. Reality: How anxious attachment and limerence cause people to fall in love with an idealized projection rather than a flawed, real human being, making it impossible for ordinary partners to measure up. The "Diet of the Mind": Why obsessively consuming "pinkpilled" content, toxic relationship advice, or deep dives into romantic tropes acts as highly processed junk food for your brain, fundamentally altering how you perceive love. Algorithm-Driven Loneliness: Understanding the internet's intense selection bias—why people in happy relationships aren't the ones posting on venting forums, which allows the algorithm to feed you an artificially negative view of the dating pool. The Psychology of Limerence: A deep dive into how childhood dynamics—such as having withholding parents but experiencing one perfect moment of care from a distant third party—create a lifelong, doomed search for a flawless romantic savior. Translating Love: Why relationships often fail not from a lack of care, but from a "communication gap" where partners fail to understand the specific "packages" (like gifts, physical touch, or acts of service) in which the other person has been taught to give and receive affection. Why do we keep reacting in ways we don't fully understand? Why do certain situations seem to hit harder than they should? And why can we have years of insight into our patterns and still feel stuck repeating them?In this episode of Message in the Middle, Marianne sits down with Karen Rubinstein, speaker, author, and creator of The RETURN Way™, to explore the hidden fears and stories that often drive our reactions, relationships, and behaviors.Drawing from her own journey through alcoholism, recovery, trauma healing, and personal transformation, Karen shares how she discovered that most of what we call stress isn't actually about the moment we're living through. It's about the meaning our nervous system attached to experiences long ago.Together, Marianne and Karen discuss:• Why insight alone doesn't always create change• The difference between self-awareness and self-judgment• How shame keeps us stuck in familiar patterns• What survival mode can look like in high-functioning women• Why emotional intelligence is more practical than most people realize• The shift from self-improvement to self-alignment• How naming our fears begins to loosen their gripIf you've ever wondered why certain emotional triggers keep showing up, why healing feels harder than simply trying harder, or why you still struggle with patterns you thought you'd outgrown, this conversation offers both understanding and hope.Because real transformation doesn't begin with becoming someone new. It begins with understanding who you've been all along.Connect with Karen: https://www.karenrubinstein.comhttps://substack.com/@karenrubinsteinoutloudhttps://www.karenrubinstein.com/the-return-way Connect with Marianne:Website:  Message In The Middle with MarianneMessage In the Middle Facebook Group:  https://www.facebook.com/groups/422430469323847/YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/@MessageInTheMiddle/playlistsLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/marianne-demello-smith-678b9966Email:  Contact | Message In The Middle with MarianneSubscribe to Message In the Middle:Apple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeLeave Us a Review: If you enjoyed today's episode, please leave a review and share your favorite takeaway. Imagine a piece of bait dangling in the water. A passing fish sees it. What a stroke of luck to stumble upon a free, unsuspecting meal. Believing it has found prey, it strikes, convinced it has the power and is acting on its own terms. Only after the hook pierces through does the reality set in. This fish was the target rather than the predator. It got caught in a trap that took advantage of its reactive instinct. In this episode, I talk about how leaving it there can be an act of gentle rebellion. Not in terms of setting traps, but in terms of letting the bait dangle. https://youtu.be/5T44fux-rX8 “Leave it there” is our current exploration theme in The Haven. As I reflected on this idea of bait and tempting action, I realised there are two sides to it. There is the bait that is left there in the hope we bite. And there is what we can do when we engage our critical thinking and cultivate a sense of indifference to the attention and engagement economy that so desperately needs us to react. The Hook Hidden Inside Rage Bait We see this everywhere. I often think about the Jaguar advert that caused such a massive stir online. The internet absolutely erupted. Thousands of people rushed to their keyboards to make videos rejecting it, mocking it, asking where the car was, and lamenting the death of the company. It was interesting to notice how people thought they were being edgy by standing up to corporate culture in this way. But they performed exactly as predicted. They had bitten down on the hook, carefully prepared by the chefs in the Jaguar marketing kitchen. Reacting predictably isn’t necessarily the act of resistance we imagine it to be. It isn’t a display of strength. In fact, it’s often compliance with what the data would expect us to do. Rage bait seeks to cash in on our good faith and our sensitivity to injustice, unfairness, and ignorance. It is an energy vampire that leaves a bitter taste in our mouths, not only robbing us of time to create, contribute, and bring more beautiful things into the world, but also tainting those things with that flavour. Shifting our relationship with rage bait has a greater potential reach than the respite we might experience in the moment. The Attention Economy Wants Us to React Philosopher Byung-Chul Han writes about the shift towards an “achievement society“. We are no longer controlled primarily by an external authority telling us what we should do in order to gain favour. Instead, Han argues, that pressure has moved inwards. Power now operates through the pressure of the “endless can”. There are abundant opportunities and invitations to work without limits, hustle harder, outpace the competition, and stay ahead of the game. A never-ending, asymptotic game, where the end we think we’re closing in on remains forever just out of reach. And the person cracking the whip is inside us. The super-egoic injunction to forever do more than you’re currently doing. Online clout chasers and rage baiters are part of this ecosystem. Not necessarily as evil masterminds, but as people trapped in an endless demand for attention. Constantly pressured to exploit themselves and stay visible, whatever the cost to others and to society as a whole. The platform designers, however well-intentioned they may have been at the start, consistently end up building digital arenas based on algorithms that turn us against one another (and ourselves). Whether directly or indirectly, they stir strong emotions that can be turned into profit. Once attention becomes the currency, people begin competing for it in whatever ways work best. When Defiance Becomes Compliance There is a type of rage bait (trolling, poking the bear, questioning authority) that seems to me a very natural expression of youth. To rebel and rail against society as a way to distinguish one’s own subjectivity. But the mechanics of capitalism have a way of commodifying rebellion. It folds attempts to rebel, especially online, back into its own logic, handing over a creator revenue dashboard and dangling the carrot of potential financial reward. Defiance becomes compliance. What may have started as an act of individual autonomy in the face of authority becomes a highly predictable form of algorithmic compliance with authority. For everyone else, the temptation to react to those dangling rage bait in the waters around us can be incredibly strong. But it is also predictable, and it becomes part of the currency. It risks eroding trust, patience, and honesty. When Everything Starts Looking Like Rage Bait I’ve noticed on Threads recently how often jokes seem to get misunderstood. I saw one earlier: “They’re called Fish FINGERS, not Fish STICKS. Fish don’t have sticks!!!” It seems to be a joke poking fun at the fact that they’re called “fish fingers” in the UK and “fish sticks” elsewhere. The punchline is built on the absurdity of the speaker failing to subvert the logic of the debate. They’ve assumed they’re called fish fingers because they’re literally the fingers from fish. It’s a nice, neat joke. Obviously a joke… Apparently not obviously a joke. It wasn’t the first time I’d noticed people instinctively reaching for the label “rage bait.” Whether they missed the joke or simply assumed it was another bad faith provocation, I was struck by how quickly people interpreted it through that lens. Maybe constant exposure to online engagement bait (bad faith posts intended to make people react) has trained us to interpret everything defensively. Instead of asking, “Is this funny?” we’re asking, *”What’s this person trying to do to me?” or “What are they trying to take from me?” A joke is laughter bait. Chuckle bait. Groan bait. Not rage bait. These wider algorithmic trends may be eroding our discernment and, with it, changing how we think. Leave It There So how do we respond with gentle rebellion? We can return to the phrase that cuts both ways: There are those who leave the bait dangling in our feeds, hoping to cash in on our sensitivity and unsettle things for the sake of an algorithmic payday. Our ultimate defiance is to look directly at it, recognise what it is, and choose how to respond. Sometimes that means saying nothing, changing the subject, making something, or simply giving our attention to something we’ve already decided deserves it more. It isn’t always the most cathartic response. The pull to react can be incredibly strong in that moment, and it can feel like an instant hit of relief to do so. But once the dust settles, there’s a deeper satisfaction in knowing your attention went where you chose, not where someone else wanted to drag it. I’d love to hear your thoughts. Join us for free in The Haven Courtyard. Maybe we can cultivate rebellious indifference together.

RECESS: Surviving a Zambezi Hippo Attack - Juliet Starrett's Extreme Whitewater World Championship Story

Juliet and I have told pieces of this story over the years, but we've never sat down and told the whole thing from the beginning. This episode, I'm turning the tables and interviewing Juliet, because the full arc of how she ended up getting launched twelve feet into the air by a hippo on the Zambezi River is too good to tell any other way.It starts in the late 1990s, when Juliet was a D1 rower turned wilderness river guide in California: fit, competent on Class IV water, and completely unaware that a tryout on the Kern River was about to drop her onto one of the most storied women's extreme whitewater teams in the world. We're talking Kelly Califadich, Julie Munger, Beth Rippins, Sue Norman, Brooke Winger, Rebecca Rusch: true legends of the sport. Juliet was the youngest, the least experienced, and by Rebecca's nickname for her, the MEAT in the middle of the boat. What she had was athletic horsepower, the right mindset, and no real concept yet of what she'd signed up for.Winning nationals meant an all-expenses-paid trip to the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe for the 1997 World Championships. Two weeks of daily training in the Batoka Gorge: daily flips in Class V rapids, giardia, massive crocodiles between rapids, and a hundred-degree grueling hike in and out of the canyon every single day. Followed by a race they won. Then, because they'd budgeted a full month in-country, the team tacked on a five-day canoe safari at Mana Pools, Juliet's mom Janet included. Flat water. Wildlife. A chance to decompress.Emphasis on WILDlife. What Juliet describes about the moment of the hippo attack (the sound, the air, looking down into the open mouth of a four-thousand-pound animal) is something I still think about. And what she did in the seconds after hitting the water is the reason she's here to tell it.What You'll Learn in This EpisodeWhat it actually took to make a women's extreme whitewater World Championship team in the late 1990s — and why the word "extreme" matteredHow high-volume rivers like the Zambezi differ from the Class IV whitewater most people have experienced, and why that gap is bigger than it soundsWhat two weeks of daily training in the Batoka Gorge looks like: the hike in, the carnage, the giardia, and what finally made the flipping stopWhy hippos kill more people in Africa than almost any other large animal — and what makes their attacks so difficult to surviveWhat Juliet's guide told the team in the safety talk before the canoe safari, and why the locals already knew not to be thereThe split-second decision Juliet made in the water after the attack — and why years of river guiding made the differenceWhy a lifetime of athletic competition and high-stakes environments still didn't prepare Juliet for this particular kind of fearWhat "primal terror" actually feels like, and how it's different from the adrenaline fear of running a dangerous rapidKey Highlights: (00:00) Kelly sets up the episode: an interview with Juliet about a story that shaped their life together(00:45) How they met at the Extreme Whitewater World Championships in Chile, including Kelly's infamous Class V swim(01:53) What made this sport extreme: Camel Cigarette sponsorships, helicopter carnage footage, and Class V rivers worldwide(04:28) Juliet's four World Championship venues: the Zambezi, Reventazon, Orange River, and Futaleufú(06:26) The legendary women's team: Kalafatich, Munger, Rippins, Norman, and Rebecca Rusch(09:07) Juliet's origin story: D1 rowing at Berkeley, chasing a tan, and becoming a wilderness river guide(12:01) The tryout on the Kern River and the Monday phone call that changed her life(15:08) Winning nationals means Zimbabwe: understanding high-volume rivers for the first time(21:18) Two weeks in the Batoka Gorge: daily flips, giardia, crocodiles, and finding the Nyaminyami(29:42) Winning the World Championship and the greatest French fries of Juliet's life(32:42) The Ready State Mobility Coach(32:47) The canoe safari plan: five days on the lower Zambezi at Mana Pools, with Janet, Juliet's Mom(36:31) Gary's safety talk: machetes, three guns, hippos, crocs, lions, and snakes(38:31) Days one and two on the river: crocodile wakes, hippo pods, and the Jumanji paddle bang(41:57) Hippo City or Hippo Bronx: the democratic vote that nearly cost Juliet her life(45:40) The attack: a sound like a gunshot, launched 12 feet into the air, and swimming for their lives(50:17) Stranded on a Cape Buffalo island, Tupperware canoe repair, and three silent days to the takeout(57:13) Juliet can't be beat at the "share an interesting fact" ice-breaker game(58:24) Primal fear and why Juliet will never do a canoe safari again(59:36) Reacting under extreme pressure, not freezing in the moment(1:02:33) Hippo shrine

True Crime Tuesday presents: Serial City: Detroit & The Hunt For Multiple Serial Predators with Former Police Chief/ Law Enforcement Commander/ Investigative Analyst/ Author, G. H. Cliff! At the turn of the twenty-first century, Detroit investigators faced a nightmare few police divisions ever encounter: multiple serial predators operating at the same time, in the same city, often targeting vulnerable victims in overlapping neighborhoods. To the public, the crimes appeared scattered. A schoolgirl attacked on her way to class. A woman assaulted before dawn. A victim deceived, coerced, or ambushed. A body discovered. Separate incidents. Separate headlines.Inside Detroit's Major Crimes Division, a more disturbing picture began to form. As detectives compared reports, victim statements, timelines, geography, and behavior, the investigation became something far more difficult than a search for a single suspect. The city was not hunting one predator. It was hunting several! On today's TCT, Gerald Cliff, PhD. joins the show to talk about the formation of the Violent Crimes Task Force in response to a new form of crime arriving in Detroit and the surrounding area.  Also, the unique agencies that came together to form a borderless agency that pursues criminals wherever they choose to flee.  Gerry also gets into the contrast between the technology they had to bring down the five predators in this book versus the new technology on the scene now, and the benefits of moving into the future of crime fighting! EPISODE 240 Human life is rarely defined by permanence.  It is instead defined by change. You do not live in static conditions.  You live your life in dynamic conditions. A career begins and ends. Relationships form and dissolve. Health changes. Beliefs evolve. Technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) disrupt industries. You move through periods of uncertainty in the chaos of change before your life stabilizes into something new. Between every significant “before” and “after” exists an interesting space: called the “passage.” A “passage” is the ambiguous space between two change events. A “passage” is a psychological, emotional, intellectual, relational, and spiritual interval space between what was and what will become. A “passage” is often where your most important personal growth actually occurs. How can you use effective use “passages” when they occur your own life? Reacting to “passages” and change in a positive way can help you create a positive impact in your personal and professional life. Does wealth determine who your kids should be friends with? In this lively roundtable episode of Travis Makes Money, Travis Chappell is joined by producer Eric and guest co-host Brandon Birkmeyer to react to a viral parenting video claiming children shouldn't associate with kids from "broke families." The conversation quickly expands into a thoughtful discussion about parenting, limiting beliefs, character, friendship, and why financial status is a poor measure of someone's values. On this episode we talk about: Reacting to the viral claim that kids shouldn't be friends with children from lower-income families Why character, integrity, and values matter far more than financial status The difference between teaching an abundance mindset and judging people by their wealth How parents can thoughtfully guide their children's friendships without controlling them The importance of exposing kids to empathy, resilience, and diverse life experiences Top 3 Takeaways Character outweighs wealth. Financial success doesn't determine whether someone is a positive influence—values, kindness, and integrity do. Teach confidence, not elitism. Parents should instill healthy beliefs about money without encouraging children to look down on others. Guide instead of controlling. Rather than choosing friends based on income, parents should help kids recognize healthy relationships and positive influences. Notable Quotes "There's some shitty rich kids, some shitty poor kids, and some shitty middle-class kids." "If you're raising your kids with strong values, they're not going to be so easily shifted by one friend's opinions." "I'd be much more worried about my kids becoming rich douchebags than having a friend who doesn't have as much money."
