Are pet sitters and veterinarians really on the same team when it comes to caring for cats? In this episode, Dr. Ashlie Saffire, feline specialist and President of the Feline Veterinary Medical Association, joins the show to explore how deeper collaboration between pet sitters and veterinary professionals can dramatically improve cat care. She dives into common stress-related cat health issues, the importance of maintaining routines, and why understanding feline behavior is essential. They discuss practical tips for pet sitters—like using pheromones, documenting eating habits, and asking better intake questions. Dr. Saffire also encourages pet sitters to pursue certifications and reach out to local clinics to form partnerships built on trust and knowledge. Main topics: Building vet-pet sitter partnerships Understanding cat stress and anxiety Importance of routine in feline care Using pheromone therapy for calmer cats Certification and education for sitters Main takeaway: “Cats actually are a lot harder to care for than dogs… People are finally figuring that out.” Dr. Ashlie Saffire, feline vet and President of the Feline Veterinary Medical Association, joined us on Pet Sitter Confessional to talk all things cat care. As more pet parents recognize the unique needs of their cats, pet sitters have a vital role to play in supporting feline health. From routines to stress reduction to better communication with vet teams, we can make a big difference--if we take cats seriously. Let's give cats the thoughtful, professional care they truly deserve.

Deborah Wolfe describes the meeting of 2000 + Dolphins off the coast of California swimming together in a giant mega pod with several species. What can this mean? What did Paul McCartney do for dogs? A listener asks ‘what does elbows up' mean to Canadians. #elbowsup! Deb Wolfe takes Mike Meyers quiet cheer on SNL (which has become a rallying cry to Canadians) to a bizarre silly level demanding Americans give the world its dogs back and replace them with Russian and Chinese breeds. Now, that's A Bad trade! How do Canadians feel about the recent Trump/Musk actions and tariffs? A bit like a spouse getting a surprise divorce and trying to start to date other people again. Some dog breeds have higher libido than others and that's why some breeds are overrepresented in the accidental mutt population. So don't worry, Mexico isn't gonna ask for its chihuahuas back! In fact, 1 mama dog and her puppies can produce 67,000 dogs in 6 years while 1 mama cat and her kittens can produce a whopping 420,000 cats in 7 years. Neuter & Spay is the way to go! “My biggest challenge is making sure the welfare of these cats is taken care of. I'll never desert these cats. Never.” - Gloria Murli This episode is sponsored-in-part by Maddie's Fund and the Rescue Cleaners and Disinfectants. What happens when a prison island becomes a refuge for hundreds of community cats? In this powerful episode, host Stacy LeBaron sits down with Gloria Murli, retired Rikers Island captain, and Mike Phillips of Urban Cat League to explore the decades-long, compassionate mission to care for and manage the cat colonies of Rikers Island. Gloria shares how a promise to a fellow officer turned into a lifelong commitment to Rikers' feral cats, evolving into one of the nation's largest TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) initiatives inside a correctional facility. Together with Mike, they recount the logistical, emotional, and bureaucratic challenges of working within a highly secure, sprawling facility, where cats once numbered over a thousand and lived in hidden colonies across 400 acres. Now, the project is taking an inspiring next step: creating a dedicated sanctuary on Rikers Island, transforming a former softball field into a safe haven for cats. This model sanctuary will not only stabilize the cat population but also serve as a workforce development opportunity, training low-security inmates in animal care—providing skills and hope for post-incarceration employment while improving animal welfare. We discuss creative solutions for feeding, the importance of partnerships with the Humane Society of New York, and how these lessons can guide sensitive area TNR and community cat care nationwide, from airports to correctional facilities. If you've ever wondered how passion and persistence can drive systemic change for cats, this episode will inspire you to believe in what's possible—no matter how challenging the environment. Press Play Now For: The untold story of Rikers Island's hidden cat colonies. How TNR became possible inside one of America's largest prisons. Challenges of managing 27 feeding stations on a secure island. Why building trust with authorities is key to community cat projects. How the sanctuary model may revolutionize cat care in sensitive areas. Opportunities for incarcerated individuals to gain animal care skills. Creative fundraising ideas, including sponsor-a-feeding-station models. The power of long-term commitment to transform cat welfare. When a patient is going through an allergic flare, we focus on making the pet comfortable which is absolutely reasonable! However, we have to think of the prevention of future flares and frustration for that case. It is important for us to adjust our mindset once relief has been established and think of the long-term plan for that pet. Each plan can be unique depending on the case presentation, client's goals, etc. Check out this week's episode of The Derm Vet podcast where I discuss shifting to this mindset with ease including a recent cat case I had to go through a treatment adjustment.TIMESTAMPS00:00 Intro02:21 A common scenario that I see at the clinic06:43 Laying the foundation down for the pet to succeed11:16 Cat case with really bad pyoderma13:12 Considering allergy testing15:01 Outro

What does it take to start over and succeed in pet care—twice? After moving from Los Angeles to Canada, Maricella Sauceda launched Love 4 Dogs Pet Services from scratch, building it into a thriving solo operation. When betrayal and burnout led her to scale back and start fresh in a new town, she leaned on resilience, community, and clarity to move forward. From seasonal adventure hikes to enrichment walks for senior dogs, she shares how custom services and strong boundaries have helped her stay passionate and present. Her evolving journey—including a surprising recovery from a cat allergy—highlights the power of trusting your instincts and staying true to your purpose. Main Topics Starting over in a new country Rebuilding after betrayal and burnout Offering seasonal and custom services Balancing business with community work Overcoming health challenges to grow services Main Takeaway: “I can reinvent myself again… because I've done it over and over.” Starting from scratch isn't a failure—it's proof that you're adaptable, capable, and strong. Maricella Sauceda's journey in pet care is a reminder that we're not defined by setbacks, but by our willingness to keep showing up, keep serving, and keep dreaming. Whether it's moving to a new country or recovering from betrayal, she proves that resilience and reinvention go hand in hand. If you've ever had to hit reset, this episode will inspire you to trust your experience and believe in your next chapter. About our guest: Maricella Sauceda is the owner and founder of Love for Dogs Pet Services based in Aurora, Ontario, just north of Toronto. Originally from Los Angeles, she moved to Canada in 2009 with her two beloved rescue dogs, Tazz and Jazz (may they rest in peace), who were more than happy to make the cross-country journey by her side. After months of research and planning, she officially launched Love for Dogs in 2010—building the business from the ground up with determination and care. Surrounded by animals her entire life, Maricella has a natural disposition that dogs and cats instinctively gravitate toward. As an only child, pets became her closest companions, a bond that still shapes her work today. She is certified in Pet CPR and has completed continuing education in Animal Behaviour and Welfare through the University of Edinburgh, and Dog Emotion and Cognition through Duke University. Her services include weekday dog walking, seasonal forest adventure hikes, and enrichment walks for senior dogs, along with select custom services for long-time clients. Now developing Love 4 Cats after recovering from a long-standing allergy, Maricella brings her signature personal touch to feline care. Deeply involved in her local community, she volunteers with Turtle Tias, serves on her child's school council, and contributes to local town committees. Starting Love for Dogs has been one of the best decisions of her life—and her clients' pets are better for it.
