Alright, friends—we've come to the end of the 2025 run of Many Minds! Our final episode of the year is an audio essay by yours truly. This is a classic format for the show, one that we only do every so often. Today's essay is about names. It's about the question of whether animals have something like names for each other. And it's also about a deeper question: What even is a name? How do humans use names? How does the historical and ethnographic record kind of complicate our everyday understanding of what names are. I had a lot of fun putting this together, and do I hope you enjoy it. Now, the holiday season is a time when people might be shopping around for new podcasts to listen to. That makes it a great time to recommend us to your friends and family and colleagues. You can think of it has an especially thoughtful gift, one that's absolutely free, and that keeps on giving throughout the year. Speaking of gifts, as an addendum to this episode you'll find a little stocking stuffer after the credits. It's a reading of a poem that figures prominently in today's essay. Without further ado, here is my essay—'In search of names.' Enjoy! Notes: A text version of this essay will be published shortly. Notes 2:00 – The text of, 'The Naming of Cats,' by T.S. Eliot is here. See also the full collection, Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The lines about cats' taste preferences and cats having different kinds of minds comes from another poem in the collection, 'The Ad-Dressing of Cats.' 3:00 – The 2019 study finding that cats know their names, and the 2022 study showing that cats know the names of their friends. 4:00 – For an overview of research on dolphin "signature whistles," see here. 5:00 – For the 2024 study reporting name-like rumbles in elephants, see here. 6:00 – For the 2025 study reporting vocal labels for individuals in marmosets, see here. A critical response to the study is here; the authors' response to the criticism is here. 12:00 – For overviews of cross-cultural variation in names and naming practices, see here, here, here, and here. Richard Alford's 1988 study, published in book form, is here. 13:30 – The study reporting name signs in Kata Kalok is here. 15:00 – For research on expectations based on the sounds of people's names, see here and here. 16:00 – For recent work on the "face-name matching effect," see here. For the study on "nominative determinism" in the medical profession, see here. (Note that, while this latter study does report empirical data, its rigor is questionable. And, yet, at least one other study has reported similar findings.) 17:30 – For the example of over-used names in Scotland, see here. 19:30 – For discussion of names in New Guinea, see here. For examples of research on "teknonymy" see here and here. For discussion of Penan "necronyms," see here. 20:30 – For an overview of name taboos, see here. The study of gravestones in the world's oldest pet cemetery is here. Surprise! A bonus episode! We watched the recently released Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, the third film in the Benoit Blanc detective franchise written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Daniel Craig. We get right into themes explored throughout the movie - the juxtaposition of Blanc and Father Jud and their differing views on faith, the temptation of power and wealth and how it preys on humanity, the many ways in which we tell stories about ourselves and each other, and the inherent power of collective judgement and shame. We delve deep into the complicated relationship between the Catholic Church and how it views and treats women, make parallels between Blanc and Poirot's view of justice and how room time as public shaming can be utilized (or not), praise the incredible lighting and cinematography multiple times, and debate whether this could have been made with a different religion at the core. We also talk about the many twists and turns the mystery takes throughout and realize the mastermind essentially accomplished their goal. Katy was influenced by The Murder of Roger Ackroyd too much, Carrie threw her notebook into the air, Maddy was thinking about Cats, and Mack pitches an academic paper. We also talk about how both Catholics and Rian Johnson love iconography and symbolism, are definitely charmed by Josh O'Connor, think the movie really balanced the buddy comedy and life philosophy aspects well, and love Bridget Everett so much. Listen to hear more about zombies, Captain Ahab, alter servers, Man v. Animal, The Dip, and Star Wars. Morale is low today after the Dolphins get embarrassed on Monday night football against the Steelers, and now are officially eliminated from the playoffs. We touch on the struggles of the Miami Heat as they lost their 5th game in a row last night versus the Raptors. Tobin and Leroy dissect the game and evaluate the possibilities in the future for the Miami Dolphins. We take calls and hear from all the disgruntled Dolfans. We roll right into the second hour fielding more calls from Dolfans, and get into a discussion of whether or not the Dolphins organization is dysfunctional. The guys talk about possible future head coach scenarios for the Miami Dolphins. Leroy poses a question to the Dolphins fans, are you willing to be patient when they inevitably rebuild. We get into the Miami Heat's struggles as they drop to the Toronto Raptors for their 5th straight loss. Tyler Herro was a late scratch; Leory and Brittney feel like this could mean a trade soon but are shocked to find out Tobin doesn't agree. We then dip into our Mixed Bag and hear from; Aaron Rodger's ego and an annoyed Troy Aikman. We continue to break down the Dolphins getting embarrassed and eliminated on Monday versus the Steelers, we hear Tua and Jordy Brook's postgame comments. The guys make sure to praise the Cats as they took down the Lightning last night as they continue to impress. Would Giannis coming to the Heat be the immediate fix they need right now, or are their issues bigger than that? We wrap this Somber Tuesday with a little silly sauce as we discuss swimming with monkeys, and get in our last blows to Tua for his lacking display of disappointment after the game last night.

We have a busy Monday slate as the Dolphins take on the Steelers on MNF, the Heat play the Raptors, and the Cats are in action against the Lightning. Tobin was locked into Phillip River's return to football, the Colts almost got away with that one. It was an NFL Sunday full of injuries and elimination as the gang gets into the Chiefs missing out on the playoff and who they think could take the AFC. Leroy is disgusted by how Pavia reacted to not winning the Heisman, he took petty to a whole other level, and it's time to gather around the locker room as Leroy gives away his Gameballs and Gamebums, this edition ALL about the Heisman. Tobin is fired up after seeing the Dolphins practicing in the snow on Saturday, but Leroy and Brittney aren't very moved, as we discuss the NFL Playoff landscape with no true front runners. We quickly get derailed when Tobin poses a question to South Florida sports fans — Joe Burrow to the Miami Dolphins or Giannis to the Miami Heat? We kick off the final hour with sound from the Cats after their dominant win over the Dallas Stars, Philip Rivers shares how it feels to get hit again after 5 years away, we update the poll results, and wrap up the show with Alright! Oh No! as Tobin is mad at the fish, Leroy ain't buying the Phins in the snow, and Brittney has a soft spot for Philip Rivers.

We kicked off the show with some bad losses from last night, Tobin was defeated after the Avalanche beat down on the Cats and the Bucs went down after being up by 14. Leroy is somber after reports come out on who Michigan they are looking at to be their next head coach. We preview the Monday Night Football matchup between the Dolphins and Steelers.

Leroy is somber after reports come out on who Michigan they are looking at to be their next head coach. We preview the Monday Night Football matchup between the Dolphins and Steelers. We start off the second hour with a bit of silly sauce as Tobin tries to convince Leroy and Brittney of his ridiculous time zones theories. We quickly pivot as Tua told the media that he was “happy” with the Dolphins despite him not throwing the ball much, and Tobin raises the question if Tua will even be here next season. We then try to Tickle Leroy's Fancy ahead of the NFL football weekend slate. Tobin is sick of people trying to bait him with the Giannis to the Heat rumors, he swears that he is a changed man and will not resort back to his old ways of getting excited about players coming to Miami… we all call bs. He then goes on to rant about the NBA begging them GIVE THE HEAT THEIR PICK! Leroy spends the segment fighting with technology and Tobin has enough! Leroy continues to dissect and share his feelings as more news comes out about the situation with former head coach Sherrone Moore of the University of Michigan and his Alma Mater. Tobin reports that TJ Watt will more than likely not play on Monday Night Football against the Dolphins. We finish up the show with our favorite Friday Game "You're Dead to Me” big mouths and the gang turns on each other.
