Crime Bit with Danelle Hallan returns with Part 2 of the Carol Roth case, moving from the original investigation to the long aftermath. A retired Chicago homicide detective, George Cybel, reopens the file, interviews those who knew Carol, and challenges how suspects were cleared. As a podcast brings new attention, the story expands to mishandled evidence, ignored tips, and DNA results that never sparked action. With a key suspect gone in 2024, focus shifts to the last man still standing. In Part 2, Danelle unpacks the suspects, the missed opportunities, and the modern tools that could finally bring closure.
In this episode of Crime Bit with Danelle Hallan, we revisit the cold case of 21-year-old Carol Roth, whose life was shaken by a late-night break-in at the Delta Zeta house in 1974 and ended the following winter after a walk home in Normal, Illinois. From the campus hangout known as The Cellar to the frantic hours when Carol was found and rushed for care, police build their theory around a key sighting and a composite sketch that will steer the case for decades. In Part 1, Danelle traces the timeline to Christmas 1975 and the first choices that left Carol's family without answers.

Send us a textWhat makes a Christmas song timeless? We set ourselves a deceptively hard challenge: pick the single most iconic holiday track from each decade, starting with the 1960s and ending in the 2010s, then fuse them into one perfect album side. Right away a pattern emerged—so many beloved songs weren't immediate smashes. They took years to climb, re-entered charts as rules changed, and found new life through radio, TV specials, movies, and, later, streaming. We start with Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), released on the day of JFK's assassination and later crowned by time, then square it against Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas, seared into memory by Rankin/Bass. In the 70s, Lennon and Ono's Happy Xmas reframed the “Christmas song” as purposeful protest while McCartney's Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time perfected the carefree synth sleigh-ride. The 80s deliver spectacle and sentiment: Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas birthed charity supergroups and Live Aid, while Wham's Last Christmas kept quietly climbing until it nearly topped the chart four decades later. The 2000s were a tougher hunt, but they showcase platform power. Faith Hill's Where Are You Christmas rides the Grinch soundtrack into perennial status as Britney's My Only Wish (This Year) evolves from TRL-era fluff to streaming favorite. Then the 2010s give us precision nostalgia: Kelly Clarkson's Underneath The Tree, crafted with Greg Kurstin to echo Phil Spector's wall of sound, stands shoulder to shoulder with Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, the modern juggernaut that finally reached No. 1 decades after release and returns every year like clockwork.By the end, we've got a front-to-back holiday playlist with a story: how classics are born, forgotten, revived, and ultimately adopted as tradition. Hit play, then tell us your decade winners, the sleepers we missed, and the holiday deep cuts you swear by. If you enjoy the show, follow, share with a friend, and leave a quick review—it helps more listeners find their new favorite December soundtrack. One idea. Six songs. Infinite possibilities...
In this special episode of Novel Spirits, the boys celebrate the holiday season with another great, humorous session of camaraderie:The votes were in for the Battle of the Genres, revealing our first, unanimous victor. And we reviewed 'The Last Christmas' by Gerry Duggan, a very Deadpool-ish take on a Zombie-filled Christmas - highlighting themes, characters, and artistic style, as always. The drinks were flowing, the boys were rolling, and all-in-all it was just a good time. Send in your music story! It's amazing how a show grows up. We started with wobbly mics and chaotic intros; now we're three and a half years in, juggling season three plans, holiday chaos, and a creator workflow that actually works most days. The conversation opens with gratitude and candor—what lasting commitment feels like when the calendar fills with family visits, three different Christmas dinners, and a sleep schedule that doesn't. We talk numbers without bragging and gear without gatekeeping, then admit the obvious: consistency is the hardest part. The heart of the episode sits behind an espresso machine. A customer drops sexist remarks at 6:30 a.m., and we unpack why speaking up matters, how teams set boundaries, and what real allyship looks like in service work. Minutes later, a smoky haze: the refrigerated display case is literally cooking the sandwiches. Cue problem-solving under pressure, a call to the manager, and a lot of quick thinking. Then the season's absurd punchline—syrup shortages, dark humor at the drive-thru, and a gut check to make sure people are actually okay. That's the theme: laugh at the chaos, but see the human first. We promise a music show and deliver: Wham's Last Christmas nudges Mariah from the holiday throne, sparking a smart chat on charts, nostalgia, and what makes a song “seasonal canon.” We widen the lens with 2025 music moments, from high-profile space stunts to the Grand Ole Opry's 100th birthday and industry reckonings that refuse to be PR-washed. No stan wars here—just a clear look at ownership, legacy, and accountability, and how those stories shape the way we listen. For a warm reset, we pop into a 90s-themed coffee shop with a working tube TV and retro posters, because third places are where culture sticks. We wrap with the perennial debate: which films are “real” Christmas movies—Gremlins, Die Hard, claymation classics, Elf—and why personal rituals matter more than rules. If you're into music culture, creator practice, and the strange comfort of holiday messiness, this one's a cozy ride with sharp edges.Enjoyed the episode? Every December, the same two songs return — playing in stores, homes, airports, and holiday parties around the world. Do They Know It's Christmas? and Last Christmas have become so deeply embedded in our global celebration of the season that it feels like they've always been there. But they haven't. In this episode, Kate takes a deep dive into the remarkable back stories behind two of the most iconic Christmas songs ever recorded, both released within days of each other in December 1984 — and both created under dramatically different circumstances. Darf man noch „Last Christmas“ hören? Und was zieht sich Matze Knop an Weihnachten an? Aber es geht nicht nur um seinen Körper, sondern auch um Barbara Schönebergers steife Hüfte. Was es damit auf sich hat und was zur Hölle ein Knopener ist, wird sich alles in dieser Folge klären. Ihr solltet also reinhören. Persönliche Empfehlung vom Weihnachtsmann!
The Spin-ter Wonderland season is upon us! Get ready for a head-to-head bracket elimination of your favorite holiday hits with our annual NAUGHTY OR NICE Competition! We've selected fourteen songs by artists we've covered on the podcast in the last year and pitted them against one another to determine who comes out on top, based on YOUR VOTES! From Frank Sinatra's crooning Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas to Lady Gaga's Christmas Tree, we've got a blend of new tunes and familiar favorites in the running this year. The Beach Boys' Little Saint Nick is also looking for redemption after underperforming a few years back. Will Fall Out Boy's Yule Shoot Your Eye Out remain our champion??James & Connor are back to talk about their holiday traditions, previous Naughty Or Nice contests (including the tragic and complicated elimination of Wham! and Last Christmas a year ago). We'll play memory games about Connor's scores and units, learn about each of these seasonal staples, and compete against each other with our own brackets to break a years-long tie. Then we'll end the episode with a new memory game that might end up with James on the naughty list after all!Thank you for another great year! Which of these holiday songs were your favorites? Would your bracket have matched the final score? Are there any artists we've covered with more deserving Christmas classics? On episode 351 we're joined by my friend Jim Lorino, the artist formerly known as Scoopski, from Philadelphia. I've known Jim since the early days of the podcast, and it's great to have him back. This time, he's here with his new band, DelCobras, a three-headed Power Pop monster that's slithering onto the Philly rock scene in 2025, the Year of the Snake apparently. DelCobras features Jim “Scoops” Lorino, Marc Schuster, and Nick Cervini — all three of whom sat down for this conversation. The band grew out of the live lineup of Scoops, and after an incredible year of shows, the trio decided to shed their old skin, and strike with a tighter, more aggressive sound. On the episode I featured their fresh take on the holiday classic “Last Christmas,” plus the non-seasonal rocker “Someday Soon” — both available wherever you stream music. In the episode, we dive into how DelCobras came together, talk all things Philly, and hear about their recent gig at a Christmas parade. It was a fun chat with plenty of local music philly brotherly love. Big thanks to Jim, Marc, and Nick for coming on, and huge thanks to all of you for listening and supporting independent artists. Change can be scary… but don't fear the cobra. Enjoy the episode! Happy Holidays, LAFSters! To celebrate the season, our hosts peel back the wrapping paper on Last Christmas (2019). Chelsea hypothesizes that this story may be A Christmas Carol for the modern age, and although this stocking may not be stuffed with uncomplicated cheer, Madison can't get enough of its Wham!-ful soundtrack. Starring Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding, and with memorable performances from Emma Thompson and Michelle Yeoh, this seasonal tale of second chances underscores the gift of community for a woman who's most definitely on Santa's naughty list. The cinematic world of love and laughter had rom-com enthusiast Madison head over heels from the time Harry met Sally. For genre skeptic Chelsea, however, it's been a grueling enemies-to-lovers plot. In Love at First Screening, Madison introduces Chelsea to all the fan-favorite love stories she's never wanted to watch. One friend's passion might be the other's displeasure, but doesn't love conquer all? Tune in every other Wednesday to find out.

Paul Feig #4Take a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Paul Feig EVEN MORE, on his 4th appearance on the show. In this episode, we don't cover most of what we covered in the past 3 appearances; rather, we discuss some of his super early projects, as well as his current film The Housemaid (in theaters THIS Friday). Along the way, we talk about the first film he directed, while still in film school, and how it almost didn't happen. Then we chat about the passion project that just about bankrupted his family! Obviously, I gush about some of my all-time favorite films; two of which are his, and then we talk about some of his friends and their recent successes. Finally, we get into his newest film The Housemaid. Starring Sidney Sweeney, Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone, & Elizabeth Perkins; this is Paul's first film back in theaters since Covid. His previous 3 films (The School for Good and Evil, Jackpot, & Another Simple Favor) were all released on streaming platforms. Paul shares his opening weekend habits, and his thoughts on what may very well be his darkest film to date. I absolutely love having Paul on the show and can't thank him enough for his 4th appearance. Everyone should go see this film!

MUSICApple Music released its year-end data, and 2025 was good to Kendrick Lamar. He and SZA had the top song of the year in the U.S., with "Luther". Morgan Wallen had a good year, too. We discuss the the Top 10:On the Global chart, the #1 song was "APT." by ROSE and Bruno Mars. "Luther" came in second. Even though Kendrick had a great year, he did NOT accomplish his main goal, which was to END DRAKE. He was Apple's most-streamed artist GLOBALLY in 2025. Think again. Whamageddon is the ultimate holiday survival game. The challenge? Make it till Christmas Eve without hearing Wham!'s “Last Christmas.” Sounds easy, right? Nope. This song is everywhere, from here on the radio to shops to the dentist's office. The rules are simple: if you hear the original 1984 version of the song, you're out and have to post your fail to #Whamageddon. But covers and remixes? Totally safe. The latest edition of the retail industry's leading podcast features an in-depth conversation with Jason Buechel, CEO of Whole Foods Market and Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Grocery Stores, who shares Amazon's rapidly expanding grocery ambitions. Already surpassing $100 billion in gross sales, Amazon is leaning into grocery as a strategic category driven by frequency, loyalty, Prime stickiness, and the potential to unite all household purchasing into a seamless digital and physical ecosystem.Buechel explains how Amazon is transforming grocery shopping—a category in which consumers currently visit four to five retailers a month—into a single, unified experience. With more than 1,000 same-day grocery delivery locations today scaling to 2,300 cities, store-level innovations such as Whole Foods Daily Shop formats, and the integration of perishables directly into Amazon baskets alongside electronics or apparel, the company is erasing long-standing channel barriers. He also outlines the “one grocery” operational vision: unified supply chains, technology stacks, and customer journeys across banners, while preserving the brand trust and standards that Whole Foods customers demand. The episode opens with co-hosts Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc breaking down early holiday results. This year's hottest retail storyline, however, may be the sudden emergence of agentic AI. Tools such as Amazon's Rufus and ChatGPT are now influencing search and conversion decisions, helping fuel what the hosts dub “the most agentic Christmas yet.” With traffic gains from AI agents multiplying, the shift from traditional search to intelligent assistants is poised to accelerate dramatically in 2026.The discussion then turns to Kohl's, and the decision to name interim CEO Michael Bender to the permanent position. The hosts frame this as symptomatic of a deeper issue: a retailer with declining relevance in a shrinking total addressable market. On the heels of new quarterly earnings reports they also spotlight the theme of “profitless prosperity”—brands reporting modest sales improvements but sliding EBITDA as tariffs, promotions, and supply chain pressures erode margin—the overarching message: top-line growth is not victory unless gross profit dollars follow. The episode concludes with the remarkable rise of Google's AI game, and Sears inexplicably still operating a handful of stores (though likely not for much longer).
