This episode is a first for Decoder Ring: a live show, recorded at the WBUR Festival in Boston, Massachusetts. Given the setting, we decided to take on a Boston-based cultural mystery: namely, the “Boston movie.” Beginning in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Hollywood has churned out a whole cycle of films drenched in Beantown's particularities, crimes, crops, class conflicts, and accents, from The Departed to The Town. Why does a city smaller than El Paso or Jacksonville loom so large in the cinematic imagination? Why does Boston have a movie subgenre all its own? What makes a Boston movie a Boston movie? With the help of three guests—film critic Ty Burr; Lisa Simmons, founder of the Roxbury International Film Festival; and Boston University linguist Danny Erker—we look closely at the history and heyday of the Boston movie: how The Friends of Eddie Coyle set the template, Good Will Hunting shoved the door wide open, and Mystic River ushered in an imperial phase. We discuss the importance of race and class to the Boston movie and the city itself, the role of homegrown movie stars like Ben Affleck and Mark Wahlberg, and, of course, the best and worst of Boston accents on film. This episode of Decoder Ring was produced by Willa Paskin and Max Freedman. Our team also includes Katie Shepherd and supervising producer Evan Chung. Merritt Jacob is Slate's Technical Director. Lee and Daniel are back in this episode to talk about not only 2005's low budget, gore-heavy horror comedy "Feast", directed by John Gulager. No, they also cover the Ben Affleck & Matt Damon-produced reality tv series "Project Greenlight", specifically season 3, which was all about the making of the film. The conversation revolves around how the film plays knowing what you get to know from what went on behind the scenes on the tv show. Is the film good? Does its edge lord sense of humour hold up today? Is "Project Greenlight" actually more compelling and entertaining than the film? Does the episode talk about monster vomit AND monster cum? The Film Buff explores the evolution of sequels, franchises, and the rise of the term "IP" in modern cinema, offering context for what makes The Accountant 2 stand out. Far from a typical action sequel, the film shines through its rich, character-driven moments, particularly the compelling dynamic between Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. Their nuanced performances elevate the narrative, creating a sequel that prioritizes emotional depth and human connection over conventional action tropes, setting a new standard for the genre.

“Armageddon” was not only the highest-grossing film of 1998, but it also earned 4 Oscar nominations. Yet that same flick was named the worst movie of the year by Roger Ebert and nominated for 7 Razzie Awards. How could a film beloved by so many also receive such harsh criticism? That's just one of the many points we drill down on in this fun episode on the 1998 blockbuster “Armageddon.” What inspired the writers to add the romantic subplot between Grace and A.J.? Which pieces of space equipment were real, and what prompted NASA to let “Armageddon” use them? What's the backstory behind Aerosmith's #1 single “I Don't Want to Miss a Thing”? And just what did Ben Affleck say on that famous DVD commentary that resurfaced–and went viral– in 2016? Thank you to Jim for his top-of-the-episode shout out! Now, as ‘Dogma' makes its triumphant return to theaters this weekend, Smith reveals the full story of how he got huge stars like Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, George Carlin and others to appear in his audacious satire of the Catholic Church, how he was able “rescue my movie about angels from the devil himself” Harvey Weinstein, how a planned sequel will change now that he has fully lost his own faith, and so much more. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay can't decide whose car to take before going out and hurting some people, as they talk about 'The Town.' Andy opens up the ep about a drunken family member who lived in Charlestown, where the movie takes place, and how they got themselves in a terrifying situation that went viral. Then the fellas kick things off by dumping on the city of Boston, the annoying inhabitants of the city, and the grating accent that makes everyone sound like retahhds. There's also deep talks about the attractiveness of Ben Affleck — who is next level yoked for his role as a sober bank thief — and Blake Lively, who captured our hearts with her trailer trash chic portrayal that did little to mask just how beautiful she actually is. Of course we have to mention Jeremy Renner's loose cannon Gem, who deservedly gets all the love. It's a damn fine movie that falls short of masterpiece territory thanks to committing too much time to a love story no one cares about, and some clunky dramatic beats such as Affleck's character relapsing and choosing to do so in an abandoned bus. Check out the ep, it'll have you more excited than seeing shirtless juiced out Affleck doing pull ups.

Dazed and Confused (dir. Richard Linklater. 1993) remains a timeless classic of American adolescence…or does it? This week Justin joins me for a deep dive into one of the most nostalgia-laden films ever created, as we investigate how a seemingly breezy 1990s high school stoner comedy actually holds deep philosophical and political weight when viewed from 2025. From Matthew McConaughey's lascivious lothario to Ben Affleck's pathetic, psychotic bully, and a million characters in between, the film displays archetypes of American youth that point to the often narrow paths of identity available to each of us. All right, all right, all right? Listen to the whole episode here Check out Chuck Klosterman's piece on the film Here's another great analysis of Dazed and Confused's take on nostalgia
The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: 3:05pm- In a hidden video interview conducted by Project Veritas, Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee David Hogg and former Biden Administration staffer Deterrian Jones revealed that Jill Biden's Chief of Staff Anthony Bernal “had an enormous amount of power.” Jones continued: “The general public wouldn't know how this man looked, but he wielded an enormous amount of power. I can't stress to you enough how much power he had at the White House.” 3:15pm- While appearing on CNN, Alex Thompson—Axios reporter and co-author of “Original Sin: President Biden's Decline, Its Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again”—revealed that Biden Administration cabinet members were not confident that Joe Biden was capable of handling a “2 am crisis,” if one were to occur. So, who was in charge? 3:40pm- During a segment on PBS, host Judy Woodruff examined whether the president—Donald Trump specifically—has the authority to unilaterally launch a nuclear strike. Why wasn't PBS expressing similar concern when, according to recent reports, a cognitively fading Joe Biden held the presidency? 3:50pm- Rich and Matt debate whether Ben Affleck has made any good movies—or if Good Will Hunting, for example, is a great film in spite of Affleck…not because of him.

In another article, Goldmacher—alongside June Kim and Christine Zhang—evaluate “how Donald Trump has remade America's political landscape.” They document that 435 counties across the country became more “Democratic” from 2012 and 2024—however, 2,678 counties became more “Republican.” Further complicating matters is the 2030 census which is expected to cause comfortably blue states to lose electoral votes as citizens move to red states. In this episode of "Normal World," Dave Landau, 1/4 Black Garrett, and Angela react to viral headlines about OnlyFans creator Anna Knight, who was hospitalized after reportedly being with 583 men in six hours. They dive into internet extremes, niche subcultures, behind-the-scenes logistics, and union jokes before torching lazy AMA performances from Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton. Crispin returns with chaotic red-carpet commentary, followed by a brutal breakdown of Jennifer Lopez's declining career, Netflix misfire, and Ben Affleck drama. They riff on Chicago baseball brawls and Delta's diversity-driven ads featuring a one-armed hiker. A conversation about Emmanuel Macron's marriage leads to a broader discussion on inappropriate teacher-student relationships and media double standards. Things escalate fast with Aaron Hernandez locker-room stories, including rumors of boundary-crossing behavior, gang affiliations, tragic violence, and college football cover-ups. They debate the scandals around Harvey Weinstein, Louis C.K., and Aziz Ansari, exploring how blurred lines between consent, pressure, and regret have shaped public opinion. When an asteroid threatens to collide with Earth, NASA honcho Dan Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) determines the only way to stop it is to drill into its surface and detonate a nuclear bomb. This leads him to renowned driller Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis), who agrees to helm the dangerous space mission provided he can bring along his own hotshot crew. Among them is the cocksure A.J. (Ben Affleck), who Harry thinks isn't good enough for his daughter (Liv Tyler), until the mission proves otherwise.
Steed's twisted brilliant mind came up with Chubstep covering the most famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his controversial personal life. The guys start with a correction about the cocktail Bee's Knees, a business and maybe crime involving the street free libraries, dancing older on acid at the beach before getting into Frank Lloyd Wright. Steed and Jrad cover his design style, way staying out of school pays off, his most expensive and worst houses, his long string of scandalous relationships, getting arrested for cheating, his son inventing Lincoln Logs, a true crime mass murder at his “Love Cottage” involving a mistress, and of course the strong connection between Frank Lloyd Wright to Ben Affleck.
We're suiting up with Ben Affleck this week, from the pocket protector to the sniper rifle.
