Once upon a Time in Cinema Der Filmpodcast

Sophie Hyde is an acclaimed Adelaide-based film director, writer, and producer. Following on from her debut feature '52 Tuesdays', she has gone on to work on projects here and around the world including ‘Good Luck to You, Leo Grande' with Emma Thompson and ‘Animals' with Alia Shawkat. The film stars Olivia Colman, John Lithgow, and introduces us to the extraordinary acting abilities of Sophie's very talented child, Aud Mason-Hyde.With Sophie and Aud at the JOY studio's to discuss ‘Jimpa', we took the opportunity to cover a wide range of topics from film-making to gender identity through to Jim Hyde’s connection to JOY and the experience of being in a bath with Olivia Colman on set! ‘Jimpa’ is in Australian cinemas now so visit your local cinema listings for details and also visit the Queerest Part of Us project to celebrate, recognise and remember our stories and connection to community. Sophie Hyde's films have often explored identity, self-realisation, and the path to finding your place in this messy, mucked up world. 52 Tuesdays sees a child growing to understand the gender transition that one of her parents is going through, while Good Luck to You, Leo Grande sees Emma Thompson's 55-year-old Nancy reclaim her sexuality. In Jimpa, Sophie's finest and most mature film yet, we follow Aud Mason-Hyde's Frances, child to Olivia Colman's Hannah and Daniel Henshall's Harry. Frances is finding their place in the world as a nonbinary queer kid, eager to push out of the restrictive boundaries of Adelaide and engage with queer culture that they feel part of and as if they can grow within. A trip to Amsterdam to meet Hannah's father, Jim (John Lithgow), has Frances feeling that his proudly gay lifestyle and advocacy for gay rights would make for a suitable place for them to spend a gap year, growing, learning, and studying. In the following interview with Sophie and Aud, we talk about that kaleidoscopic nature of the film, what it's like to grow up with a parent like Sophie Hyde, and finally, what it's like to have a story captured on screen by the stunning cinematography of Matthew Chuang.the Curb is a completely independent and ad free website that lives on the support of listeners and readers just like you.

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 18, 2026 6:24

Nein? „Dead of Winter – Eisige Stille“ startet am 19. That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits

Nick looks back at Season 44 of Saturday Night Live, a year that found the show in strong form and introduced Ego Nwodim as a standout new cast member. The regular lineup was stacked with reliable heavy hitters, including Heidi Gardner, Kate McKinnon, Alex Moffat, Mikey Day, Pete Davidson, and more, giving the season a solid mix of energy and consistency. The host list was just as impressive, with turns from John Mulaney, Sandra Oh, Idris Elba, Don Cheadle, and a deep bench of memorable appearances. Highlights from episodes hosted by Emma Stone, Awkwafina, Claire Foy, Paul Rudd, Adam Sandler, Adam Driver, Emma Thompson, and James McAvoy get their due, along with context around the musical guests and what was happening behind the scenes. It's a thoughtful, entertaining walkthrough of a season that delivered laughs, strong performances, and plenty of moments worth revisiting. [Ep 157]

Director Sophie Hyde and Aud Mason Hyde talk about their film Jimpa with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™.  Jimpa premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film stars Olivia Colman and John Lithgow and is about when filmmaker Hannah (Colman) and her nonbinary teen, Frances (Aud Mason Hyde) journey to Amsterdam to reconnect with their estranged father and grandfather Jimpa (Lithgow) things unravel in unexpected ways. Frances' desire to stay with Jimpa for a full year tests Hannah's beliefs about parenting, identity and family. As tensions surface Jimpa weaves a tender, emotionally charged portrait of queer kinship, legacy and the fragile bonds between parents and children. Directed by Sophie Hyde Jumpa is a semi-autobiographical work from Hyde who stated, “Casting a version of yourself is not an easy task. It's very tricky to do and so there's a part of the story that's incredibly sort of drawing on our real lives and then there's a whole lot of fiction as well. Obviously there's Jim and there's also Aud who is my child and they're a bit older than Frances, but there's elements of the relationship between Hannah and Frances that definitely are in us.” Like Hyde Hannah's a married film artist from Adelaide, the mother of a transgender, nonbinary teenager and the daughter of a father who came out gay when she was a child. We talked to Sophie Hyde and Aud Mason Hyde about their film Jimpa at the Provincetown International Film Festival & their spin on our LGBTQ issues. This week on The Video Store Podcast I am recommending four films that sit in an interesting stretch of Arnold Schwarzenegger's career, when their action persona took a left turn into broad studio comedy. These are all wide release films that played constantly on cable and sat on the front wall of the video store for years. They did well in theaters, but they almost felt built to be rented, watched with other people in the room, and talked about afterward. None of them are obscure, but seeing them together makes the choices clearer and more deliberate.Twins from 1988 was the real pivot point. Ivan Reitman directed, pairing Arnold Schwarzenegger with Danny DeVito, which on paper felt like a gag and ended up working better than expected. It was one of the first times Schwarzenegger played openly against his screen image instead of reinforcing it. The film was also a financial gamble that paid off. Rather than taking a traditional salary, the main players took a share of the profits, which turned into one of the most lucrative deals of the era. It also helped normalize the idea that Schwarzenegger could carry a comedy without winking at the audience the whole time.Kindergarten Cop followed in 1990 and again teamed Schwarzenegger with Reitman. This one leans harder into contrast, placing a very rigid screen presence into a setting that refuses to bend to it. The child actors are doing a lot of the real work here, and the movie wisely lets them. It was shot largely in Oregon (Goonies country!), which gives it a look that stands apart from a lot of studio comedies of the period. Just his second comedy leading role and the formula is obvious, but it still had enough care put into it to feel earned rather than lazy.Junior arrived in 1994 and is probably the strangest entry in this group. It brings back Reitman, DeVito, and adds Emma Thompson, who plays it straight in a way that grounds the movie more than it probably deserves. This was one of the last times Schwarzenegger leaned fully into this specific style of high concept studio comedy. The visual effects were handled with restraint, and the film relies more on performance than spectacle, which makes it feel smaller and more controlled than its premise suggests.Jingle All the Way from 1996 closes things out and feels very much of its moment. Directed by Brian Levant, it leans into consumer anxiety, holiday chaos, and the late nineteen nineties obsession with must-have toys. Sinbad is a big part of why the movie works at all, pushing against Schwarzenegger in a way that keeps the energy up. It was not especially well reviewed at the time, but it has stuck around in a way many similar holiday comedies did not. It also marks the end of this particular run, before audience tastes and Schwarzenegger's career both shifted again.Taken together, these four movies show a very specific window when studios were comfortable reshaping a major star's image and audiences went along with it. They were reliable rentals, easy recommendations, and the kind of movies that people discovered out of order on VHS or on cable. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast!

Denzember continues with Culture Kitsch host Bobbi Miller joining us to discuss Kenneth Branagh's 1993 Shakespeare adaptation Much Ado About Nothing. Following his successful Henry V adaptation, Branagh returned to Shakespeare for a much airier, light-hearted affair, fashioning the classic play into an immensely pleasurable studio romantic comedy while preserving the spirit and (more importantly) the language of Much Ado..., assembling a showstopper ensemble led by Branagh, Emma Thompson, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Denzel as Don Pedro of Aragon, nearly 30 years before he would take on The Tragedy of Macbeth.  We begin with a discussion of Branagh's formal tendencies, how his maximalism works for the genre, and illuminate his underremarked upon technical prowess. Then, we discuss what Branagh's Much Ado...  preserves from Shakespeare's stage, what it omits, and how these ommissions speak to the film's position as an End of History artifact interested in reifying traditional family values centered around monogamous, heterosexual couplings. Finally, we discuss how Denzel's Don Pedro is utliized narratively and thematically in the film, and how Denzel's movie star persona and race factor into our perception of the character. The award-winning actress Emma Thompson takes questions on Sense and Sensibility in this special episode of Bookclub to mark the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen's birth. Sense and Sensibility was Jane Austen's first novel published in 1811 when she was thirty-five years old. The book follows the Dashwood sisters as they navigate their way through love and and threat of its loss. Marianne Dashwood wears her heart on her sleeve, and when she falls in love with the dashing but unsuitable John Willoughby she ignores her sister Elinor's warning that her impulsive behaviour leaves her open to gossip and innuendo. Meanwhile Elinor, always sensitive to social convention, is struggling to conceal her own romantic disappointment. Emma Thompson won an Oscar for her screen adaptation of the 1995 film, of the same name, in which she played Elinor Dashwood. The film also starred Kate Winslet as Marianne Dashwood, Hugh Grant as Edward Ferrars, Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon, and Greg Wise as John Willoughby. In the latest episode of the Need Some Introduction podcast, host Victor and co-host Sona delve into the third episode of the Apple TV series 'Pluribus,' titled 'Grenade.' They discuss Carol's struggles with isolation and control in a post-apocalyptic world where everyone except her is part of a hive mind. The episode breaks down Carol's interactions with other characters, her growing frustration, and her plans to leverage her newfound understanding of the rules governing this new world. Alongside, the hosts touch on various other series and movies, including 'One Battle After Another,' 'Edington,' and 'Poker Face.' The conversation also explores broader themes of socialism, human connection, and the disparities between the rich and the poor.   Then Victor and special guest, Lucy, who is making her first appearance on the podcast, discuss a wide array of television shows and movies. They dive into the highs and lows of 'Alien Earth,' disappointed by its promising start but unsatisfying finish before focusing on 'Down Cemetery Lane,' Mick Heron's adaptation for TV, which has captured their interest more than the latest season of 'Slow Horses.' They talk in-depth about the unique blend of British humor and drama, shedding light on cultural nuances and discussing standout characters portrayed by Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson. Finally, in recommendations, they discuss Scorsese rewatches,  shout-out  'Good Boy,' a low-budget horror movie praised for its creativity and 'Sorry, Baby,' a touching film now available on HBO Max. mailto:needssomeintroduction@gmail.com 00:00 Introduction and Podcast Overview 00:33 Movie Recommendations and Reviews 02:22 TV Show Updates and Cancellations 05:35 Upcoming Podcast Episodes and Discussions 06:22 New Shows to Watch 12:31 Harlan Coben Adaptations 19:27 Down Cemetery Road Review 25:20 Pluribus Episode Breakdown 36:06 Cloudy Skies and Missed Opportunities 38:39 Isolation and Personal Loss 41:18 Comfort Shows and Personal Reflections 42:42 A Perfect Yet Flawed World 53:20 The Grenade and Realizations 01:04:17 Speculations and Future Directions 01:10:18 Introduction and Guest Welcome 01:10:35 Discussing 'Alien: Earth' Series 01:12:21 Reviewing 'Down Cemetery Lane' 01:13:12 Comparing 'Down Cemetery Lane' and 'Slow Horses' 01:14:56 Character Analysis: Ruth Wilson and Emma Thompson 01:23:20 Visual Style and Cinematic Risks 01:28:25 Mistrust in Government and Bureaucracy 01:29:24 British Cultural Perceptions 01:30:39 Humor and Cultural References in the Show 01:36:04 Supporting Characters and Their Impact 01:37:38 Recent TV Shows and Movies Discussion 01:40:53 Low Budget Films with High Impact 01:42:15 Final Recommendations and Farewell

The Last Frontier Top User Rated Original Movies per Streamer Last week we ran down the top streamer's price histories and at one point I (Ara), said that Amazon really didn't have many movies worth watching but since it came included with Prime shipping who cares. So this week I wanted to see what Amazon Original Movies were available and how they rated on IMDB. This did not include TV series like Reacher, Terminalist, etc. I just wanted to see if there was something I was missing. Then I expanded it to all the streamers we talked about last week and thus we created a list of the highest rated original movies from each streamer as rated by viewers on IMDB. Note the list goes from lowest to highest. Paramount+ Hunger Ward (2020) with a rating of 7.1/10. This short documentary, directed by Skye Fitzgerald, explores the Yemeni Civil War's famine through the work of two female health workers at therapeutic feeding centers for malnourished children. It premiered on Paramount+ in 2021 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Subject. Hulu Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022) with a rating of 7.2/10 based on over 34,000 user votes. Directed by Sophie Hyde and starring Emma Thompson as a widowed retiree exploring her sexuality with a young sex worker (Daryl McCormack), it's a witty and intimate comedy-drama praised for its honest take on aging, desire, and vulnerability. Peacock Psych 3: This Is Gus (2021) with a rating of 7.5/10 based on over 5,500 user votes. This comedy-mystery TV movie, directed by Steve Franks, serves as the third installment in the Psych film series and follows fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez) and his best friend Burton "Gus" Guster (Dulé Hill) as they investigate Gus's bride-to-be's past amid wedding chaos, all while Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) faces career uncertainty. It's praised for its sharp humor, heartfelt moments, and nostalgic callbacks to the original USA Network series. Netflix Marriage Story (2019) with a rating of 7.9/10 (from over 380,000 votes). Directed by Noah Baumbach, this poignant drama follows a stage director (Adam Driver) and his actress wife (Scarlett Johansson) as they navigate a grueling divorce, exploring the emotional toll on their family and creative lives. It received critical acclaim for its sharp screenplay, authentic performances, and raw depiction of marital breakdown, earning six Oscar nominations including Best Picture. Apple TV+ Wolfwalkers (2020) with a rating of 8.0/10 based on over 43,000 user ratings. This animated fantasy adventure, directed by Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart, follows a young hunter's daughter who befriends a girl from a wolf-shifting tribe in 17th-century Ireland. It stands out for its hand-drawn animation, themes of friendship and freedom, and cultural folklore elements, earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. Amazon Prime The Handmaiden (2016) with a rating of 8.1/10 from nearly 195,000 votes. Directed by Park Chan-wook and adapted from Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith, this erotic psychological thriller is set in 1930s Japanese-occupied Korea. It follows a con artist, a pickpocket disguised as a handmaiden, and a wealthy heiress in a tale of seduction, betrayal, and revenge told across three perspectives. Amazon Studios acquired U.S. distribution rights after its 2016 Cannes premiere, making it an exclusive Prime Video original. Its high rating comes from praise for its intricate plot, stunning visuals, and strong performances by Kim Min-hee, Kim Tae-ri, and Ha Jung-woo. For comparison, other top Amazon originals include Manchester by the Sea (7.8/10), Sound of Metal (7.7/10), and The Big Sick (7.5/10).

Guest-wise, Chris Hewitt is blessed with the presence of our old chum, Brett Goldstein, who talks beards, bums, and baring his soul in new romantic drama, All Of You; [18:37 - 36:33 approx] and Chris also has a lovely chat with Emma Thompson as she enters her action hero era in Dead Of Winter.
