Parts 3 and 4 of Hugh Nibley talk.

WARNING: The audio in first 5 minutes is poor. Afterwards, it becomes more audible. Nibley discusses the Opening of the Mouth Ceremony of the Egyptians. He also discusses the Book of Breathings and the Book of the Dead.
Nibley discusses the 6th century BC, the contemporaries of Lehi, and the lessons he takes from it. Previously, this century had been thought to be a dead period: one with little innovation and records that were not taken seriously. During the 20 years before this talk, that was all changed.
Nibley goes over more ancient teachings from Egyptian temples and other ancient temples. This episode contains both parts of the talk.
Nibley goes through some doctrines taught in D&C section 109, the Dedicatory Prayer of the Kirkland Temple. He teaches the basic need for the temple, and what the larger picture is.
Nibley goes over the discovery of the Nag Hammadi documents and their teachings about early Christian beliefs.
Nibley discusses the reason for such a large amount of early literature about the 40 days. He then expounds on the teachings about the Great Apostasy from different early books. He touches on the Hume Codex, The Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Phillip, the Gospel of Truth, the Gospel of the Twelve Apostles, and more.
Nibley discusses the least liked of all scriptures in the NT: Acts 1:3. He explains how many christian sects reject the physical resurrection, even though the early Christians believed the doctrine. In this first part, he explains the arguments for and against the doctrine of the 40 day ministry. He then starts to go into the actual documents that have been found in the Nag Hammadi library that talk about some of the teachings.
Nibley continues his talk from last week about the connections between Israel and the countries nearby. He goes through Greek, Iranian, Egyptian and more. He paints a worldview, not of an isolated Bible that is the only source of true knowledge, but of a view that we espouse: that God teaches all people according to their ability.
This is part 1 of a talk given at BYU. Nibley discusses new findings on the relationships between the people of Israel and the other surrounding nations, including the Canaanites, Greeks, and Persians. There were many new findings at the time including letters sent between kings, Flood stories and epic literature.
Nibley continues the same talk from Pt. 1. He discusses the teachings of the Book of Mormon prophets on the OT prophet Zenos, and the parallels with Dead Sea Scroll writings and other Zenos writings that have been found. He also discusses the royal coronation type that is common among ancient kings. There is a good Q&A at the end. It is hard to hear some the first questions, but the later ones are audible.
Nibley discusses the parallels between symbols and imagery in the Christian and Jewish Apocrypha and the Book of Mormon. He discusses the similarities in the writings of Baruch, Enoch, Ben Serak and others to those of Lehi, Nephi and Samuel the Lamanite. The council of Heaven as shown to Lehi is common in Testamentary literature. Parallels from the treasury literature. Part 2 will follow next week.
This talk was given later in his life. He first goes through the type of man that Abraham was. Then, discusses the Pearl of Great Price. He then explains how the Book of Abraham creation story can be read of as a drama, or an ancient play. This understanding of ancient practice can greatly increase ones appreciation for the writings that we have.
This talk is important in the discussion of Ancient Literature as it helps us understand the way in which others may see the world. Nibley here discusses religious and secular beliefs that have no “Play”. This sets up further discussion of how the Pearl of Great Price helps establish the play within our beliefs.
Nibley's last lecture of the Pearl of Great Price Lecture Series.
Nibley teaches about the JS Translation of Matthew 25. It details the 3 different destruction: Of Israel in 70 AD, the end of the world (wicked), and end of the earth (celestialized).
