This episode is part 11 in a series going through the story of the Book of Mormon. In Jacob chapter 5, Jacob relays the "mystery" he just mentioned. It's something the Nephites as children of Israel should have read or heard. A prophet named Zenos wrote an allegory of Israel as an olive tree. This allegory clearly borrows from several passages of the Bible, but adds far more detail.Did you know that an ancient prophet in Israel wrote a story depicting how the church would have a lot of denominations bearing wild fruit? Did you know his story also described the origin and fate of the Book of Mormon's Lamanite and Nephite peoples?Amazing prophecy! ** #125 Alma 9: Face Off! ** :: The boring BUDDY-COP sermon without the BUDDY :: In this episode, Gigi and Patience dive into Christmas propaganda, and the eternal struggle of being a Lamanite in a Nephite world (or vice-versa because in a refreshing twist, Alma doesn't seem to see much of a difference in this chapter). Patience gets a job, then is fired for calling out someone's religious hypocrisy. And Gigi, suggests a career change as an "AI wrangler", like the kind potentially employed (but probably not) on the Church's suspiciously perfect "Light the World" campaign. The same campaign website has a silly "Kindness Randomizer," tool to suggest useless things to do over Xmas (that only make sense if you transposed the 1950s into 2024). Stuff like, making art for your dad, or sending a kind text. Gigi suggests productive ideas like "take in homeless people", or "clean your damn room." Patience suggests dad probably just wants 5 minutes alone. The duo tackle Oakes' recent devotional speech where he addressed accusations that LDS parents in Utah are excluding non-LDS peers from socialising with their spawn. Gigi suggests it's probably less intentional, and more a result of always being at church activities. But the real star of the show is Alma 9, where Alma and his "toy boy" Amulek deliver a fiery sermon full of threats, repetition, and stiff-necked insults. Gigi and Patience dissect the chapter, and Alma's obsession with being "cut off from the face of the earth", and his twist in favor towards the Lamanites. Turns out, God likes them better than the Nephites in this town, who are apparently just too blessed to function. But ultimately God seems to hate everyone he has made. Why doesn't he blame himself? The episode wraps with a wild tangent about Joseph Smith's probable adoration of itinerant preachers at tent revivals, his aversion to hard work, and his genius for turning religion into a lucrative business. Gigi and Patience fantasize about starting their own church, the "Church of the Big Fuck You," where tithes are replaced with "fuck you money." #Reasons to stay home this Sunday# - https://bookofboredom.com/reasons/ #Join the Blasphemy# - https://facebook.com/groups/BookOfBoredom #Patreon (Bonus Episodes)# - https://patreon.com/BookOfBoredom #Twitter# - https://twitter.com/BookOfBoredom #TikTok# - https://tiktok.com/@BookOfBoredomPodcast #Instagram# - https://instagram.com/BookOfBoredomPodcast #YouTube# - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMjDavWoT73Cev3IAie_XBA #Website# - https://bookofboredom.com/ A nice review on any podcast platform will help frustrate the Heavenly Father's boring plans for your future.

Samuel the Lamanite had prophecied of the signs of Jesus crucifiction and the believers watched and waited. Storms came, and earthquakes, great destruction, a mists of darkness. A voice came from heaven saying Wo unto the people.  It told the people He was Christ the Son of God that came to help us find the way to truth and happiness.  He told them I am the Light of the World.  He told them all who came to him and repented, He would receive.  He wanted all of them to turn to Him and find hope again.  He taught them that everything that had been prophesied that He would do, He had accomplished.  That He is our Savior and we can turn to Him and be saved.

Prophecies were being fulfilled—great signs and miracles among the people indicated that the Savior would soon be born. On the other hand, it was also an anxious time for believers because, in spite of all the miracles, unbelievers insisted that “the time was past” for the Savior to be born (3 Nephi 1:5). These people caused “a great uproar throughout the land” (3 Nephi 1:7) and even set a date to kill all the believers if the sign prophesied by Samuel the Lamanite—a night without darkness—did not appear.        In these difficult circumstances, the prophet Nephi “cried mightily to his God in behalf of his people” (3 Nephi 1:11). The Lord's response is inspiring to anyone who faces persecution or doubt and needs to know that light will overcome darkness: “Lift up your head and be of good cheer; … I will fulfil all that which I have caused to be spoken by the mouth of my holy prophets” (3 Nephi 1:13)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the show

The prophecies of Christ's birth from Samuel the Lamanite begin to unfold. Nephi, son of Helaman, disappears, leaving his son, also named Nephi, in charge of the sacred records. The non-believers, in their fervor to discredit the prophecies, set a deadly ultimatum for the believers. Nephi prays fervently for his people, and the sign is miraculously fulfilled, astonishing everyone as the night remains bright as day. The non-believers are struck with fear, leading to widespread conversion and peace. However, the peace is short-lived as pride, greed, and the influence of the Gadianton robbers cause turmoil once again. This episode highlights the cyclical nature of faith and wickedness among the Nephites and sets the stage for the upcoming arrival of the resurrected Christ.

It had been 600 years since Lehi left Jerusalem.  Many of the Nephites were not righteous anymore.  Samuel the Lamanite came to Zarahemla to preach to the people and prophecy of the signs of Jesus birth.  He said there would be a night a day and a night as bringt as noon day.  Some believed, but most did not and even tried to kill Samuel.  5 years passed and the unbelievers started to say the time had passed.  They set a date that they would kill all the believers if the sign did not come.  When Nephi, the prophet, saw how wicked the people had become he prayed all day.  God told him that very night the sign would be given.  Jesus would be born.  That very night the sun went down but it was as light as noon day.  The next day the sun rose again and they knew that was the day Jesus was born.  A new star could be seen in the sky.  When prophets speak today,  They are teaching us the things Heavenly Father wants us to know.  Even if it takes a long time for those promises to be fulfilled, If we believe, we will be safe.

Samuel the Lamanite was called to preach repentance to the Nephites who were not obeying God or following his teachings.  Some Nephites repented, most got angry and tried to hurt Samuel by shooting arrows at him or throwing rocks at him.  Samuel was not afraid, He was obeying God and that mattered most to him.  Samuel prophesied many things to the Nephites including the signs of his birth, which would happen in 5 years.  Samuel left and was never heard of around Zarahemla again.  Everything Samuel prophesied came true.  He was a prophet of God.

You might say it was as if they had built an impenetrable wall around their hearts that prevented them from receiving Samuel's message. Samuel understood the importance of the message he bore and demonstrated faith by following God's commandment “that he should return again, and prophesy” (Helaman 13:3). Like Samuel, we all encounter walls as we “prepare the way of the Lord” (Helaman 14:9) and strive to follow His prophets. And like Samuel, we too bear witness of Jesus Christ, “who surely shall come,” and invite all to “believe on his name” (Helaman 13:6; 14:13). Not everyone will listen, and some may actively oppose us. But those who believe in this message with faith in Christ find that it truly is a message of “glad tidings of great joy” (Helaman 16:14)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentSupport the show

Children will learn: The Lord gives warnings through His prophets. In the scriptures, prophets are sometimes compared to watchmen on a wall or tower who warn of danger. God invites me to repent. Samuel's warnings of the judgments of God consistently included a merciful invitation to repent. God sent signs and wonders to testify of the Savior's birth and death. In Helaman 14, Samuel explained that the Lord provided signs of the Savior's birth and death so that the people “might know of … his coming” and “believe on his name” Some of the verbiage and voices were taken from the friend magazine. He's an outsider - the only Lamanite prophet on record. His mission to the Nephites focuses on repentance and finding hope in the coming of Christ. His words will soften the hearts of a few and ignite violence in the hearts of others. As a Lamanite, he is a living witness of the power of repentance. His words are powerful, prophetic, and profoundly applicable for our day. Questions to Consider:Helaman 13:13-14 | Question: Where have you see this in your life? When have you seen the righteousness of one or a few provide protection for many?Helaman 15:8 | What “thing” is Samuel referring to in this verse? What kind of freedom is this? Freedom from what exactly?Helaman 16:1 | What did each man bring to the table? Why were both needed? Why didn't Samuel do the baptizing? Why didn't Nephi get on the wall? Where do you see this kind of tag-team work in the church today? A Lamanite prophet named Samuel appears among the Nephites around 6 BC. His mission is to call the Nephites to repentance amidst their deepening wickedness. Despite being thrown out of the city of Zarahemla, Samuel returns, climbing the city wall and delivers God's warnings and predictions. Samuel boldly prophesies of the coming of Jesus Christ and the devastating consequences for the Nephites if they do not repent. His bold declarations included the appearance of a new star, other miraculous signs in the heavens, and a period of three days of darkness at the time of Christ's death. Samuel's words were met with a mix of belief and violent rejection, leading to a miraculous escape from Zarahemla. The episode concludes with Samuel's powerful message of repentance and the eventual fulfillment of his prophecies, setting the stage for the coming of Christ and the subsequent transformation of the Nephite and Lamanite societies.

September 9-15 In the Book of Mormon, the Nephites always think of themselves as the good guys. In a movie, they'd ride in wearing the white hat or the gold star, signifying their goodness. Yet, the Book of Mormon demonstrates that often the Nephites are relentlessly blind to their own wickedness and it is the Lamanites who are the most faithful and true. Enter the scene into the wicked Nephite city of Zarahemla: Samuel the Lamanite. The point is clear.

President Ezra Taft Benson (1899–1994) observed that the Book of Helaman “reveals many parallels to our own day as we anticipate the Savior's second coming” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1987, 3). The book details the Nephites vacillating between righteousness and wickedness, their wars, and secret combinations by the Gadianton Robbers. It also contains the preaching and prophecies of Helaman, Nephi, and Samuel the Lamanite.  What are we to learn from this potent book? What are its themes, structure, and messages? In this episode, BYU professors Jan Martin, Joseph Spencer, Ross Baron, and Dan Belnap explore this book and these questions in an inspiring scripture conversation.

The Nephite society faces political instability following the death of Chief Judge Pahoran, leading to contentious elections and the rise of rebellion. As political factions vie for power, Kishkumen's secretive band of murderers emerges, culminating in the assassination of Pahoran and his successor. Meanwhile, Coriantumr, an apostate Nephite, leads a massive Lamanite army to a surprising victory over Zarahemla, only to be outmaneuvered by Moronihah's strategic brilliance. Amidst the chaos, Helaman's sons, Nephi and Lehi, embark on a mission to preach the gospel. Their efforts lead to astonishing conversions among the Lamanites, who surpass the Nephites in righteousness. However, the Gadianton robbers infiltrate Nephite society, driving it into deeper corruption while the Lamanites strive to eradicate the band from their midst. Despite brief periods of peace and prosperity, the Nephites' increasing wickedness and the rise of secret combinations spell impending doom. This episode highlights the stark contrast between the declining Nephite nation and the spiritually ascending Lamanites, emphasizing themes of repentance, righteousness, and the power of faith amidst adversity.

Ammoron took over as King of the Lamanites after his brother Amalikiah was killed.  Moroni wanted to save his own people (many women, children, and men) who had been captured in war by the Lamanites.  The Nephites only captured men, letting the innocent women and children go free.  When Moroni requested an exchange of prisoners but he requested an entire family for one of the Lamanite prisoners.  Ammoron would not exchange and Moroni knew Ammoron was well aware of his deceit.  Moroni came up with a plan.  They had a lamanite bring wine to the guards and when the guards were drunk they freed the Nephite prisoners.  Not one life was lost.  Moroni was inspired by God.

Send us a Text Message. From Come Follow Me:        "When compared with the Lamanite armies, Helaman's “little army” (Alma 56:33) of young men shouldn't have stood a chance. Besides being few in number, Helaman's soldiers “were all … very young,” and “they never had fought” (Alma 56:46–47). In some ways, their situation might seem familiar to those of us who sometimes feel outnumbered and overwhelmed in our latter-day battle against Satan and the forces of evil in the world.        But the army of Helaman had some advantages over the Lamanites that had nothing to do with numbers or military skill. They chose Helaman, a prophet, to lead them (see Alma 53:19); “they had been taught by their mothers, that if they did not doubt, God would deliver them” (Alma 56:47); and they had “exceeding faith in that which they had been taught.” As a result, they were protected by “the miraculous power of God” (Alma 57:26). So when facing life's battles, we can take courage. Helaman's army teaches us that “there [is] a just God, and whosoever [does] not doubt, [will] be preserved by his marvelous power” (Alma 57:26)."Support the Show:www.patreon.com/SaintsintheSouth(The thoughts, ideas, and beliefs we express on this channel do not officially represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  For additional information or official statements, please visit the website below.  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng)#biblestudy #oldtestament #religion #churchofJesusChrist #ldspodcast #christianpodcast #missionary #lds #biblestories #christ #faith #faithinchrist #scriptures #bookofmormon #doctrineandcovenants #pearlofgreatprice #temples #houseofthelord #mormon #mormonbeliefs #christiansandmormons #god #endure #ironrod #faithineveryfootstep #generalconference #prophets #followtheprophet #commandments #love #service #charity #keepstriving #keeponstriving #gospelgrowthandgoodtimes #become #newtestamentiMOM PodcastIf you need a mom friend right now, you've come to the right place. In Alma chapter 43, we are thrust back into the heart of the Nephite-Lamanite conflict after Alma's poignant instructions to his sons. Outraged by the Nephites' sheltering of Zoramite converts, the Zoramites and Lamanites plot a massive attack on Jershon. The pacifist Ammonite converts are moved to Melech, while Alma, his sons, and other missionaries rally the Nephite spirits for the impending war. The Lamanites, led by Zarahemna, face a well-prepared Nephite army under the new, young leader, Moroni. The Nephites, fortified with breastplates and shields, outmaneuver the Lamanite forces, leading to a strategic victory. Moroni's brilliant tactics and the Nephites' spiritual resolve shine through in this gripping chapter, as they defend their liberty, families, and faith against overwhelming odds. As the chapter unfolds, we witness the intensity of the conflict and the Nephites' unwavering commitment to their cause. The chapter concludes with the Nephites rejoicing in their deliverance, a testament to their faith and unity in the face of adversity.

Now it's up to us to parse out those stories and traditions and then decide if they are doctrine or just ideas. Today on the podcast we are going to cover a topic that will require us to do just that. Back in the early days of the Restoration there was an idea that in the last days a Lamanite prophet would arise and set certain things within Mormonism in what came to be known as the Prophecy of the Lamanite Prophet. Moroni Lopez Jessop joins me fresh off his Sunstone talk about this very subject to take a look at this story and teaching. We cover where this idea started, how it was understood by early Mormons, how it fell out of favor with the LDS Church, how it was kept alive by Mormon Fundamentalists, and what its relevance is today given the gift of hindsight.  --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support

Key moments Ministry of the Risen Lord 4:58 Significance of the Resurrection 9:08 Did the Lord in Reality Die and Rise Again 13:18 Text of speech: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ By Elder D. Todd Christofferson Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles Jesus of Nazareth is the resurrected Redeemer, and I testify of all that follows from the fact of His Resurrection. A crushing sense of defeat and despair enveloped His disciples as Jesus suffered and died on the cross and His body was placed lifeless in the tomb. Despite what the Savior had repeatedly said of His death and subsequent rising again, they had not understood. The dark afternoon of His Crucifixion, however, was soon followed by the joyous morning of His Resurrection. But that joy came only as the disciples became eyewitnesses of the Resurrection, for even the declaration of angels that He had risen was at first incomprehensible—it was something so totally unprecedented. Mary Magdalene and a few other faithful women came early to the Savior's tomb that Sunday morning, bringing spices and ointments to complete the anointing begun when the Lord's body was hastily laid in the sepulchre before the approaching Sabbath. On this morning of mornings, they were greeted by an open sepulchre, the covering stone having been rolled away, and two angels who declared: “Why seek ye the living among the dead? “He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee, “Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.”1 “Come, see the place where the Lord lay. “And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead.”2 As bidden by the angels, Mary Magdalene looked into the tomb, but it seems that all that registered in her mind was that the body of the Lord was gone. She hurried to report to the Apostles and, finding Peter and John, said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.”3 Peter and John ran to the place and verified that indeed the tomb was empty, seeing “the linen clothes lying … and the napkin, that was about his head, … wrapped together in a place by itself.”4 John apparently was the first to comprehend the magnificent message of resurrection. He writes that “he saw, and believed,” whereas the others to that point “knew not the scripture, that [Jesus] must rise again from the dead.”5 Peter and John left, but Mary remained behind, still in mourning. In the meantime the angels had returned and tenderly asked her, “Woman, why weepest thou? She saith unto them, Because they have taken away my Lord, and I know not where they have laid him.”6 At that moment the resurrected Savior, now standing behind her, spoke, “Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.”7 Elder James E. Talmage wrote: “It was Jesus to whom she spake, her beloved Lord, though she knew it not. One word from His living lips changed her agonized grief into ecstatic joy. ‘Jesus saith unto her, Mary.' The voice, the tone, the tender accent she had heard and loved in the earlier days lifted her from the despairing depths into which she had sunk. She turned, and saw the Lord. In a transport of joy she reached out her arms to embrace Him, uttering only the endearing and worshipful word, ‘Rabboni,' meaning My beloved Master.”8 And so this blessed woman became the first mortal to see and speak to the resurrected Christ. Later that same day He appeared to Peter in or near Jerusalem;9 to two disciples on the road to Emmaus;10 and in the evening to 10 of the Apostles and others, appearing suddenly in their midst, saying, “Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.”11 Then to further convince them “while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered,”12 He ate broiled fish and honeycomb before them.13 Later He instructed them, “Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”14 Beyond these confirmed witnesses in Jerusalem, we have the incomparable ministry of the risen Lord to ancient inhabitants of the Western Hemisphere. In the land Bountiful, He descended from heaven and invited the assembled throng, some 2,500, to come forward one by one until they had all gone forth, thrusting their hands into His side and feeling the prints of the nails in His hands and in His feet.15 “And when they had all gone forth and had witnessed for themselves, they did cry out with one accord, saying: “Hosanna! Blessed be the name of the Most High God! And they did fall down at the feet of Jesus, and did worship him.”16 Christ's Resurrection shows that His existence is independent and everlasting. “For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself.”17 Jesus said: “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again. “No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.”18 The Savior is not dependent on food or water or oxygen or any other substance or power or person for life. Both as Jehovah and Messiah, He is the great I Am, the self-existing God.19 He simply is and ever will be. By His Atonement and Resurrection, Jesus Christ has overcome all aspects of the Fall. Physical death will be temporary, and even spiritual death has an end, in that all come back into the presence of God, at least temporarily, to be judged. We can have ultimate trust and confidence in His power to overcome all else and grant us everlasting life. “For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”20 In the words of Elder Neal A. Maxwell: “Christ's victory over death ended the human predicament. Now there are only personal predicaments, and from these too we may be rescued by following the teachings of him who rescued us from general extinction.”21 Having satisfied the demands of justice, Christ now steps into the place of justice; or we might say He is justice, just as He is love.22 Likewise, besides being a “perfect, just God,” He is a perfect, merciful God.23 Thus, the Savior makes all things right. No injustice in mortality is permanent, even death, for He restores life again. No injury, disability, betrayal, or abuse goes uncompensated in the end because of His ultimate justice and mercy. By the same token, we are all accountable to Him for our lives, our choices, and our actions, even our thoughts. Because He redeemed us from the Fall, our lives are in reality His. He declared: “Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. “And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works.”24 Consider for a moment the significance of the Resurrection in resolving once and for all the true identity of Jesus of Nazareth and the great philosophical contests and questions of life. If Jesus was in fact literally resurrected, it necessarily follows that He is a divine being. No mere mortal has the power in himself to come to life again after dying. Because He was resurrected, Jesus cannot have been only a carpenter, a teacher, a rabbi, or a prophet. Because He was resurrected, Jesus had to have been a God, even the Only Begotten Son of the Father. Therefore, what He taught is true; God cannot lie.25 Therefore, He was the Creator of the earth, as He said.26 Therefore, heaven and hell are real, as He taught.27 Therefore, there is a world of spirits, which He visited after His death.28 Therefore, He will come again, as the angels said,29 and “reign personally upon the earth.”30 Therefore, there is a resurrection and a final judgment for all.31 Given the reality of the Resurrection of Christ, doubts about the omnipotence, omniscience, and benevolence of God the Father—who gave His Only Begotten Son for the redemption of the world—are groundless. Doubts about the meaning and purpose of life are unfounded. Jesus Christ is in fact the only name or way by which salvation can come to mankind. The grace of Christ is real, affording both forgiveness and cleansing to the repentant sinner. Faith truly is more than imagination or psychological invention. There is ultimate and universal truth, and there are objective and unchanging moral standards, as taught by Him. Given the reality of the Resurrection of Christ, repentance of any violation of His law and commandments is both possible and urgent. The Savior's miracles were real, as is His promise to His disciples that they might do the same and even greater works.32 His priesthood is necessarily a real power that “administereth the gospel and holdeth the key of the mysteries of the kingdom, even the key of the knowledge of God. Therefore, in the ordinances thereof, the power of godliness is manifest.”33 Given the reality of the Resurrection of Christ, death is not our end, and though “skin worms destroy [our bodies], yet in [our] flesh shall [we] see God.”34 President Thomas S. Monson tells of a Robert Blatchford who, 100 years ago “in his book God and My Neighbor, attacked with vigor accepted Christian beliefs, such as God, Christ, prayer, and immortality. He boldly asserted, ‘I claim to have proved everything I set out to prove so fully and decisively that no Christian, however great or able he may be, can answer my arguments or shake my case.' He surrounded himself with a wall of skepticism. Then a surprising thing happened. His wall suddenly crumbled to dust. … Slowly he began to feel his way back to the faith he had scorned and ridiculed. What had caused this profound change in his outlook? His wife [had] died. With a broken heart, he went into the room where lay all that was mortal of her. He looked again at the face he loved so well. Coming out, he said to a friend: ‘It is she, and yet it is not she. Everything is changed. Something that was there before is taken away. She is not the same. What can be gone if it be not the soul?'”35 Did the Lord in reality die and rise again? Yes. “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it.”36 As the prophesied birth of Jesus drew near, there were those among the ancient Nephite and Lamanite peoples who believed, though most doubted. In due course, the sign of His birth arrived—a day and a night and a day without darkness—and all knew.37 Even so today, some believe in the literal Resurrection of Christ, and many doubt or disbelieve. But some know. In due course, all will see and all will know; indeed, “every knee shall bow, and every tongue confess before him.”38 Until then, I believe the many witnesses of the Savior's Resurrection whose experiences and testimonies are found in the New Testament—Peter and his companions of the Twelve and dear, pure Mary of Magdala, among others. I believe the testimonies found in the Book of Mormon—of Nephi the Apostle with the unnamed multitude in the land Bountiful, among others. And I believe the testimony of Joseph Smith and Sidney Rigdon who, after many other testimonies, proclaimed the great witness of this last dispensation “that he lives! For we saw him.”39 Under the glance of His all-seeing eye, I stand myself as a witness that Jesus of Nazareth is the resurrected Redeemer, and I testify of all that follows from the fact of His Resurrection. May you receive the conviction and comfort of that same witness, I pray in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.   Alleluia. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.     ACU Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! And behold, the time is at hand, and this night shall the sign be given. 15 And it came to pass that the words which came unto Nephi were fulfilled, according as they had been spoken; for behold, at the going down of the sun there was no darkness; and the people began to be astonished because there was no darkness when the night came. 16 And there were many, who had not believed the words of the prophets, who fell to the earth and became as if they were dead, for they knew that the great plan of destruction which they had laid for those who believed in the words of the prophets had been frustrated; for the sign which had been given was already at hand. 17 And they began to know that the Son of God must shortly appear; yea, in fine, all the people upon the face of the whole earth from the west to the east, both in the land north and in the land south, were so exceedingly astonished that they fell to the earth. 18 For they knew that the prophets had testified of these things for many years, and that the sign which had been given was already at hand; and they began to fear because of their iniquity and their unbelief. 19 And it came to pass that there was no darkness in all that night, but it was as light as though it was mid-day. And it came to pass that the sun did rise in the morning again, according to its proper order; and they knew that it was the day that the Lord should be born, because of the sign which had been given. 20 And it had come to pass, yea, all things, every whit, according to the words of the prophets. 21 And it came to pass also that a new star did appear, according to the word. 22 And it came to pass that from this time forth there began to be lyings sent forth among the people, by Satan, to harden their hearts, to the intent that they might not believe in those signs and wonders which they had seen; but notwithstanding these lyings and deceivings the more part of the people did believe, and were converted unto the Lord. Peace on earth to all people of good will.

As the only named Lamanite called to prophesy unto the Nephites, Samuel serves as a memorable figure in the Book of Mormon. Not only did he risk his life to preach repentance unto the Nephites from the wall of Zarahemla, but he also detailed vital signs of the birth and death of Jesus Christ. In this episode, Dr. Frank Judd Jr. discusses his chapter “Samuel the Lamanite and Prophecies Fulfilled,” from the Book of Mormon Academy volume Samuel the Lamanite—That Ye Might Believe. Professor Judd discusses Samuel's prophecies of the Savior and a possible connection with the Joseph Smith Translation. These signs were so crucial to our understanding of these events that the resurrected Lord commanded Nephi to include all of them in the record (see 3 Nephi 23:9—13). In studying these words, we “might have glad tidings” (Helaman 13:7) unto our souls much like Samuel intended.       Publications: ·      “Samuel the Lamanite and Prophecies Fulfilled” (in Samuel the Lamanite—That Ye Might Believe, Religious Studies Center, 2021) ·      For Professor Judd's other publications, please see his Religious Studies Center author profile here   Click here to learn more about Frank Judd Jr.
